agreed cant judge alex smith yet. He hasnt been in a consistent system ever since he was drafted there.

every great QB has a great system and a good O-Cordinator they are comfy with. Smith has never had that.
I will agree that it is hard to judge him because of that reason, but if you have watched him play for the past 3 seasons, you can see that he has no poise, bad accuracy, and other not so good QB features. He is a backup at best even when he goes to a new team.

um.. Alex Smith had no WRs to throw to while he was there except for Antonio Bryant.. and in that season he looked really good.. to simply say he has no poise or accuracy is inaccurate...
crap.. my players are going down like flies in fantasy..

now garcia is out this next week.. crap
garcia was your starter? yuck.

ive been trying to deal moss the last few days, nobody wants him.

Alex Smith never had a #1 WR to throw to you are correct. But he had decent options. Also he has a great RB behind him. Last year Shaun Hill (Who?) took over for Alex Smith when Smith was hurt. The Niners actually moved the ball down the field once and awhile and Hill had the same options Smith had. Shaun Hill played 3 games. His comp % was 68, he threw 5 TDs and 1 INT and had a rating of 101.3. In 7 Games with the same exact options Alex Smith had a comp % of 48, threw 2 TDs and 4 INTs, and had a rating of 57.2.

The season you said he looked really good was 2006. His completion percentage was 58.1, he threw 16 TDs & 16 INTs, and his rating was 74.8. Now if you consider that a really good year than I guess you should say Alex Smith should be a starter. To me, with Gore having the year he had in 2006, those numbers should have been a hell of a lot higher.

Like I said before, if you watch every Niner game, you can see that this kid has struggled for 3 years. There offense was horrible under Alex Smith plain and simple. Yes they had different coordinators and Smith does not have the best options in the league, but that doesn't change the fact that Smith is not accurate, he rushes passes, he has NO pocket presence, etc.

I dislike the argument about Smith not having WR's to throw to. A Good/Great QB will make everyone ( Even shitty player ) look good around them. Perfect Example is Tom Brady for all them years where Troy Brown was his #1 WR. Seriously Tom Had Shitty WR's but he made most of those players look great out there.

There is a difference.. I didn't say Alex Smith is a world beater like Tom Brady.. yes Tom Brady is good with anyone to throw to, some QBs need weapons to make them look better..especially when they are developing...

If some QB's need good weapons to make them look good then in essence they aren't that good at all....

Kitna in Detroit for example. Super Shitty QB but has semi decent numbers because his WR's are amazing.

Your not getting it though. Nobody is sayin' Alex Smith is Tom Brady.

What i'm saying is that Alex Smith is an above-average QB in this league, given the chance.....

I've said it before....he won't be a great QB.....won't be a Pro-Bowler....but the days of Top-Tier QB's is coming to an end......Brady/Manning are the only clear-cut dominant QB's in this league....you could maybe include Romo but he hasn't amounted to much in the playoffs.

Smith shows great poise in pressure situations.....it all comes down to the coaching of Mike Nolan continuously fuckin' up Smith.

Whatever happens I wish the best for him. He may never play again due to this shoulder mishap....

It all started a year ago when Smith got injured and Nolan questioned his manhood....and Smith rushed back to show he was man enough to play.....it was evident he wasn't the same.

And I'm saying that Smith is a Ryan Leaf. A total bust. Lets both just remember these posts. When Smith goes elsewhere to be a starter we shall see how he does. Your whole argument on Nolan not giving Smith a chance will be proven wrong when he goes to another team and shits up the joint. Then I guess you'll blame that coach as well huh?

I gave up on Smith last year, I'm not sad to see him on IR and I'm 99% sure he won't be back next year. I really hoped we made a play for a FA like Derek Anderson, but oh well. I'll put my eggs in martz' basket for now, but eventually we need to build the offense like we have the defense the last couple of years.

Ryan Leaf, Akili Smith, David Klinger had one thing in common...they had no grasp on the pro game.. Alex Smith showed 1 year where he looked like he understood the NFL and then Norv Turner left.. Alex Smith is not Ryan Leaf..

Ok I'll put him in more appropriate QB comparison category. Cade McNown, Tim Couch, Rick Mirer, Tommy Maddox, David Carr, Joey Harrington.

You, as a Steelers fan, know Tommy Maddox and what he was all about. ;)

There have been good QB's who need talent around them to succeed, and there are some who can make chicken salad out of chicken shit. I don't think Smith is an exceptional quarterback but he could be average to above average in the right situation. There are a lot of awful, awful starting QB's out there. Nolan is a horrible coach, too.

Troy Brown was a damn good WR in his day, too. Not the flashiest player but he had awesome hands and was extremely smart, smart enough to be a competent corner when needed. For years he was one of the very best returners in the league as well. He's no Marvin Harrison, Randy Moss, or Chad Johnson, not an elite receiver but one of the most underrated players in the league.

I'm just going to assume you don't watch the 49ers.....Smith will most likely never play again in this league due to Nolan forcing Smith back .

As a head coach after losing an OC.....shouldn't you get an OC familiar to your system?

Last year the 49ers were 2-1 and going to face the Seahawks....Rocky Bernard seperated Smith's shoulder pretty badly...he NEEDED surgery....but because Nolan basically called Smith "a wuss"....Smith was forced back in too soon which fucked up his shoulder even more.

I'm not saying all the blame shouldn't be on Smith....he has no pocket presence and by no means has the best accuracy. But, he has starting QB qualities and can be an above-average QB in this league.

He's only really played one FULL season....coddamn. His rookie year you can throw out due to bein' a rookie on a shit team....his 2nd season went 16-16 and 3rd season missed practically the whole season.
http://www.nfl.com/players/shaunhill/gamelogs?id=HIL586565&season=2007

I don't see anything here that proves that Shaun Hill was that great. TB was in shut down mode for the playoffs. Cincy's Defense is garbage and he did horrible against Minnesota. 5 tds 1ints 2 fumbles, but he didn't play against the same teams Alex Smith did..
Alex Smith also played a couple sub par teams. I never said Shaun Hill was great I was just showing you what he did, with the EXACT same offense as Alex Smith.

I know you watch every Niner game like me, so what did you ever see in Smith. I really cannot think back and pick one game where I was like wow this guy can be good. Like you said he has no pocket presence and bad accuracy, so why do you think he can be good? He had one decent year and that's when Gore had a ridiculous year. Any QB should have a decent year with the numbers Gore was putting up that year.

Not the biggest news, but certainly an interesting look at how the Colts seem to handle player off-field problems as they have cut starting DT Ed Johnson. Again, he's not a big-name talent, but considering he's the starting DT on an already thin (both depth wise and weight-wise) middle of the D-line it's eye-opening, especially here.

Keep in mind also that he was the only defensive lineman last season to start all 16 games and one of the bigger linemen the Colts have. After being run over by Forte last week and looking back at how having a lighter line got the team trounced by the Jags two years ago, amassing something like 500 yards of rushing (seemingly), it'll be interesting to see if the Colts bring in someone of note (or at least of heft).

They really do seem to need a big glob up front taking on blockers to keep the O-line off the linebackers. They were just getting blown open for running lanes last week. And going back to a few years ago, they seemed to make the biggest strides defensively when they brought in Booger McFarland.

don't forget Quincy Carter ;)

suggestions for jeff garcia in fantasy football this week?

drop for a week and pick up someone like pennington or keep him on roster (hes not playing this week so he wont get me points)

How do you guys think the vikings defense will pan out.

We have our FF league draft tonight. (yeah we always have it in week one for some reason)

I'd hold on to Garcia for 1 more week.. reports are coming out TB that he is on the outs with Chucky.. so he might be traded here or dumped here soon...
I'd hold on to Garcia for 1 more week.. reports are coming out TB that he is on the outs with Chucky.. so he might be traded here or dumped here soon...
Yea he's just not going to produce any points this week..

where are they thinking of trading him.. is tb nuts?

I'm going to start Desean J. this week. I just have a hunch. However, I'm split between Jones Drew or Braylon Edwards. Both did bad last week and I don't want to fall 0-2 in a $20 league.
Vikings defense will rock it.
We were missing our key FA addition Madieu Williams against the Packers last week.
They just need to make sure the offense doesn't show up one dimensional like last week either ;)
don't forget Quincy Carter ;)
O Yea. Carter blew. He looked better then most of Dallas's QB's did since Aikman but thats not saying much :D

The one game that totally sold me was the game I attended in Dec 06....when the 49ers played the Seahawks....the weather was horrible....actually later that week one of the worst storms hit WA......the 1st half he absolutely blew ass.....but Norv let Smith do his thing in the 2nd half and pulled it off. One specific play was where he avoids a sack....scrambles to his left and hits Frank Gore for the GW......

It's when Smith is given the chance to run HIS offense.....the spread....kid doesn't make mistakes.....here's last years game vs the Cardinals....Week 1...basically the exact same team as last week's game vs the Cardinals. Smith has poise.....here's the video:

i picked up baskett. fred taylor did nothing for me though last week either

Might i suggest listening to the Fantasy Focus Football Podcast from ESPN.. it's good to listen to and it's funny...

I wouldn't go with any Jacksonville RBs since 3/5 of the OL is injured.

Guys here are my RB for the week. Willi Parker, Brandon Jacobs, Matt Forte or MJD.

MJD is sitting because as DJSteel said their o line is dead right now. But do you think I should start Forte over Jacobs or (not likely) Parker? Forte is hot right now but I think teams will game plan for him. He is vsing Carolina which is not that good stopping the run.

I am just not sure he will have a better game then either one of those 2.

I hate large FF leagues. My one league is 17 teams with so many fucking offensive positions that if anybody on my team goes down that I'm basically picking amongst table scraps like 3rd string RBs, undrafted rookie WRs, and other players that maybe gain 20 yards a game and maybe 1 touchdown all year. That just makes the whole free agent part of the game completely not fun.

Have I ever told anybody here how much I hate that insult to Tight Ends Shiancoe? He dropped a terrific TD pass from Jackson.
Kleinsasser is a million times better, and he always has been.

The Vikings were making this game so much more difficult for themselves with their playcalling early on. They seem to be getting a clue though.

I wish I was watching it. Im in Buffalo (its on where I live) so I'm "watching" it on NFL.com. I was just listening the to the redzone broadcast, and I know how well Jackson can throw a pass (this isn't a joke) and I know how great Shiancoe is at dropping it.
I do recall yelling at the monitor "STOP PASSING" or "STOP RUNNING".
At least Peterson is slaughtering the Colts "run defense".

Do they still have Flying Saucer? That dude is awesome at FB or TE.
At least Peterson is slaughtering the Colts "run defense".
I never really could understand how they think having 250 pound DTs is gonna cut it. They seem to forget how they had a run-stopping, block engulfing blob in McFarland in their Super Bowl run. It's really quite frustrating to watch. If only this game turned out like the Madden league game, I wouldn't be on pins and needles watching every play.

You guys dont know how good it feels to watch the Colts struggle.

I wish they will do what Miami couldnt last here and go 0-16. AD is killing them hands down.

By the way this has to be one of the worst FF games I have ever had. I have 1 TD for all my players (granted some havent played yet) and 1 INT. This along with none of my RB running for over 50 yards yet.

Bleh.

Apparently Al Davis is going to fire Lane Kiffin tomorrow. :bomb: I wish that crusty old fuck would hurry up and die, the Raiders will never be respectable while he's the owner as he never gives coaches long enough to get things turned around.

Yeah my fantasy football day has gotten off to a horrible start. I have 4 players in that Colts - Vikes game between my two teams: Peterson, Berrian, Harrison, and Wayne. All but Peterson have done nothing for me.

Watching the Chiefs - Raiders game is boring. While I enjoy watching the Raiders struggle it isn't any fun when the other team sucks ass too.

What's the story on the Raiders wide receivers? Lelie can't make it on the 49ers yet he is the starting receiver for the Raiders.
Carolina is killing me. They are going to end up having 10 false start penalites at home by the end of the game.
My God can there be a worse game to be stuck watching besides the Chiefs - Raiders? Both teams should be demoted to division I-AA college ball and the fans should get their tickets refunded plus 100% for the 3 hours of their lives they've lost watching this cluster fuck.

I need advice from Lions fans. How the fuck do you put up with shitty games like this? It feels like the Colts are stuck in the preseason.

Lots of poor football this morning. I think 2 teams scored more than 10 pts before half, and that's not just good defense

They have to put up with it, if they turn the game off and go outside, they're in Detroit.

You probably need some sort of drinking game.
