Ummm, Not really. I think it was mostly because Jordan was a once and a million player. Watching him was watching history. Even then you knew that he was the THE PLAYER that everyone else from now on will get compared too.Jordan at his prime was twice as good as Kobe at his and 3x better than LBJ (we dont know if he is at his prime yet though)
I know this is cliche but there was something about Jordan that simply was different. Just like Ali. Did anyone get tired of watching Ali beat the hell out of everyone 99% of his career? Nope..because you knew this guy was one in a million.
Also, the game was so different back then. Jordan earned his 45 points because he was getting body checked to the ground every time he went to the hole. Watching the superstars back then battle for 4 qrt was much more entertaining then watching superstars now free throw their way to 45 points.
I dont really know what to tell you man, you pose a good question. I wish they would go back to the best of 3 first round so I didnt have to waste 4 nights of garbage play when the 8th seed gets killed by the Lakers or Magic or Cavs.
To answer your question. Idunno
I agree with you in that I prefer the way the game was played back then. But you could tune out once the finals started because the Bulls were going to win. Sure, Jordan might do something, but really, did the other team ever have a chance? Jordan hit a game winner? Great, all he did was keep the series from going to seven, which the Bulls would have won.
Besides, for my money, I'd rather watch a highlight reel of Magic Johnson passes than one of Jordan jumpshots.
*ahem* Rockets repeated as champs during that era. Jordan was retired during the first, and was knocked out of the playoffs by the Magic during the second.
And yes, it got old watching the Bulls. Unlike most, I wasn't mesmerized by Jordan. Great player, but the sycophantic coverage of the NBA centered around Jordan was boring.
Exactly. The only opening for any other team was Jordan leaving. Once Jordan had a full year back with the Bulls, three straight again. Yawn.
And I think the media fawning over Jordan was as bad as what Lebron's getting now. The difference is that there is a massive amount of new media from which we can now be over-saturated. I honestly didn't like Jordan much because everyone said he was so awesome. Same thing's happening now with Lebron. I don't want to watch Cavs games because 90% of the broadcast will be dickriding.
