2013 Yard Sale Thread

Yesterday was beat, but did get a couple finds. Weird how games for the same system seem to show up on the same days. I've had good dreamcast days, PS1 days, SNES days... but rarely all at once.

Anyway, yesterday was Gamecube:
$1 Wind Waker (missing manual)
$3 (All disc only) 2x Double Dash, Mario Sunshine, & Luigi's Mansion
Son of a ....I never see GameCube stuff in my area. Would pay a good price for Double Dash...

To slowdive; Just be sure they're Jangos and not Mandalorians. You likely already knew that but since you said Lego wasn't your thing.

Doh! I was just going to post...They are Mandalorian Troopers. Oh Well, there are 3 of them in there (probably most of their vehicle too).

To make up for my mistake, I will post some LEGO porn. I found these Star Wars figures in 2011 for about 50 cents each.

Thanks everyone for the input!

^^ That's awesome!  90% of the time I ask about Legos, they say, "Oh we sold our collection earlier this morning."  It seems I have a lot of competition around here, but I've managed to get a couple of good scores.  The best was around 30 pounds of Lego for $50.

My next goal is to look for wooden railway Thomas the Train stuff for my son.  The season is winding down around here though so I'm going to have to wait till next year.

I'm losing track of stuff, so I am just posting as the pics are done with approximate dates. 8-24-13

This is a cool vintage set. These are brand new or new old stock (NOS) Paid $3

These are silvered glass/lusterware.

These are from the same sale. I paid $4 each (both marked $5). Both are Factory Sealed. I kinda want to open the bank, but I can sell it for decent money.

Bags of LEGO stuff $5 total (I don't know much about lego stuff, so I hope I didn't overpay. I saw at least 5 figures in the bags. Two of them are jango fett.. The one set is harry potter or something like that.

These items are from a sale that my enemies beat me to. I pulled a dick move and finally got back at them. As I approached I saw the one guy was looking through PS2 and wii games. I asked the chick running the sale how much the video games are and she said $1 each. I then grabbed all the wii games and started sorting them like a deck of cards. Looking back I could have bought them all to trade in, but I pulled the ones I wanted instead.

LOTR RISK Trilogy edition $2

These I got at a sale that had video games for $5 each. They were junk games, but I saw these two gems. (I've always wanted TNBC)

I talked them down to $1 each because the cases were dirty and the games had some minor scratches.

more to come...
I've always thought that nightmare before christmas game had a cool cover. Is it any good

So legos are valuable these days? I hear people asking about them at yard sales, but I never figured they'd be worth anything. Not that I'm going to start snatching them up, I try to shop  by a "take only what I need policy," and I'm way more interested in Nintendo anyway.

Ideally, I would buy Nintendo stuff all day, but in my area it is limited supply. I started to diversify years ago when I wasn't finding enough stuff to justify the time and other costs of going to sales. It's frustrating to put in a ton of effort and not find much. If I lived in CA or something, I would have 10X the video game stuff I have with the same amount of effort. LEGOs always go quickly around here, so I figured they are worth getting if they are cheap...But I can turn garbage to gold, so I tend to buy almost anything that is interesting and cheap.

I haven't had a chance to try TNBC yet...I have two xboxes and they are at my parents house in storage. DOH!

YES YES YES. But they can be hard to find. Especially sets.

I usually find at least one every couple weekends. I'm actually building one as I'm typing this I bought for $4. If it has everything, I should make at least $100 for it.

I found 4 or 5 big sets last year that I don't think I got around to posting yet. They are big sets. Some are the 'girl's legos' and the others are the alien? ones. They aren't vintage, but they are at least 7-10 years old.

As far as legos go, the minifigs are most sought after, right? I mean if I find a set with the instructions, but no box will lego collectors want it or does that devalue the lot to the price of the bricks? I know there are unique pieces that stand out, but can you just fill in the missing ones with matching pieces of the same color or are they numbered or something?

Minifigures are the easiest to sell, specifically licenced characters and army builder types. Sets with instructions get a premium over just the bricks and sets with the box get even more.

Sets older than 10 years have shades of gray that lego doesn't make any more. Space, castle and pirate are popular cause of nostalgia.

As with anything it comes down to condition, but lego is a good resale simply cause of its inherit compatability. It will have some value cause it's never obsolete. I have lego bricks from the 60s that work every bit as well as brand new ones.

I say all this with the disclaimer that I'm not a reseller but I do collect. I've never had much luck with yard sales cause I'm pretty anal about condition and most stuff I find was treated pretty rough.

Ome last tip if you're unfamiliar with lego: learn to recognize the difference between lego and other brands. Most people use "lego" as an all-encompassing term but many collectors can be pretty zealous about hating clone brands.

I've only started picking up Legos recently, but what I'll usually do is sort them by color and see if any sets can be assembled for my own use. In terms of reselling the bulk excess, I tend to leave a fair amount of meat on the bone; with legos if you have some manuals, minifigs, and partially assembled stuff it makes selling by the pound much easier.

I'm a fan, then again The Nightmare Before Christmas is my favorite movie. The game has a style similar to God of War but set in the NmBC universe, with some songs and rhythm games thrown in.

Here is last Saturday's loot:

If you can believe it, I'm working on something even bigger than my last two scores. I'm honestly going to be really disappointed if I don't get it. This lot I'm trying to get has so many games I'm dying to own. I'd hate for to go to all my competition who are only interested in reselling. I'd fucking hate it.

Is it that "my kid used to collect games" lot on craigslist?

Yea, you think it's fake? lol.

Honestly it would be a huge weight off my shoulders if it were. There are just obnoxious resellers around here. One of them essentially owes me money. They give no shit for the hobby. I hate the idea of someone's collection going to them.

Oh man, that's an excellent haul. WarioLand, Conker, and the Fire Emblems are all on my "To Get" list. (Especially Fire Emblem stuff. I never really got into them before Awakening, but now that I've played that I'm hungry for the rest.)

I'm wondering if it is. If its not and I somehow magically end up getting it, I'm going to ask for his son's contact info. Something tells me if it's not fake then the kid doesn't know his stuff is being sold off.

Nice! I was hoping a couple of people would follow up with me, but they haven't yet. The one guy has something awesome, so I may stop by his house and knock on the door to see if he found it yet. He probably looked it up on ebay or something though.

I got a follow up.

Emailed a canceled YS from last weekend about a GC.

GameCube w/ 1 controller, all hookups and the following games:

  1. Pokémon Chanel
  2. Pokémon XD Gale of Darkness
  3. Disney Cars
  4. Lego Star Wars 2
  5. Mario Superstar Baseball
  6. NASCAR Thunder 2003
  7. Super Smash Bros. Melee
  8. WWE Crash Hour
  9. Godzilla Destroy All Monsters
  10. NASCAR 2005
  11. Starsky and Hutch
  12. Serious Sam Next Encounter
  13. Star Fox Adventures
  14. Jeremy McGrath Super Cross
  15. Naruto Clash of Ninja

Guy wants $50 for the lot, I'm gonna pass.  I already have any games from that list that I would want and I'm used to picking up that stuff up for much cheaper.

To me, the only stuff in that lot worth owning is Pokémon XD and Star Fox.  Maybe I'm out of touch with current pricing; I offered a guy $20 for his NES and 15 games a few weeks ago simply because I already have an abundance of NES games and didn't want to mess with more of the same stuff I usually find.  Guess I should have asked what games were in the lot first because he turned me down flat.

I would have passed on the GC lot for $50 too. But I am a cheapass like you ;). I think $30 or $35 would be what I would spend on it. The NES lot, though I would pay more for. I tend to go $1 per game and $10 for the system on average. But yeah, a list would be the way to go...I think I passed on a Wayne's World because I didn't know it was rare a couple of years ago.

I probably would have paid $65 for that lot.

10-5-13 ish:

This was an interesting sale. The guy had DVDs for $1 each or 5 for $4. They had 3 kids, so I figured they would have video games laying around. I asked about games and they brought these out. I left a madden 08 on PS3 and a NERF game on wii that I already had. He extended the same offer as the DVDs on the games. After they brought out the games about 4 people walked up and started grabbing the DVDs like they were free. I pulled the ones I thought had value and that I wanted. I know little mermaid was worth money in the past, but they just re-released it this week. DOH!

I ended up buying 40 items for $32. (oh and the Disney codes and club Nintendo codes are in the cases and haven't been redeemed) BONUS!

more to come...

Damn, wish I could find Super Mario Bros Wii for that cheap.  People treat that game like gold around here, never seen it in a yard sale.  Even at resale stores it's over $25.  Not bad on the classic Disney stuff too.

I work at an apple orchard during the fall so I am weeks behind on posting, and honestly probably forgot a lot of it (reason #1 for why I should always take pics)

A few weeks ago I went to a town wide yard sale and my first stop that advertised games wasn't set up yet but two houses down they were setting up so I stopped there. After helping them carry stuff out to set up I got:
2 DS Lites - $5 each
12 DS Games - 2x Mario Kart, Pokemon Pearl, rest were pretty common - $1 each
Pokemon Sapphire & LeafGreen - $0.50 each
4 360 Games - Kinect Sports, Disneyland Kinect, Sonic Kinect, Plants vs. Zombies - $2 each
4 iPhones- original, 3G, 3GS, 4G all working original and 3GS have bad batteries they were all $5 each
Giant storage bin of Fisher Price figures - $5
2 Giant Storage Bins of Legos w/ ~25 minifigs - $10 each

After loading all that up I went back to the first house who were set up now, walking up to the house I found a Xbox 360 Pro in its original box in a Free Pile so I grabbed that and then started looking. Ended up with:
Cosmo Black 3DS in original box - $40 - said they bought it the day it came out but never bought any 3DS games so it was only ever used for the free download games
DSi XL - $20
DS Lite - $5
Gamecube w/ 2 regular controllers and 2 Wavebirds with Receivers - $25
Silver PS2 Slim - $10
GBA SP - $2
Berry GBC - $2

Then there were the games, which I can't even remember because there were so many. There was a zip-lock bag I filled just of Pokemon Games (Blue, Red, Yellow, Gold, Silver, Crystal, LeafGreen, FireRed, Sapphire, Ruby, Pearl, Platinum, Diamond, Black, White, HeartGold, SoulSilver, Black 2 but no White 2 because she said she got bored of Pokemon after Black 2) DS games included AFAIK every Mario, Sonic game they made for the system and tons of other stuff.

Then got a bunch of Wii, 360, GC and PS2 games. Said they weren't selling the Wii itself because their parents still play bowling. Highlights were New Super Mario, Mario Party 8, Smash Bros. Brawl, Melee, Pokemon XD, Luigi's Mansion, Super Mario Sunshine, Dark Cloud 2. Overall it was a MASSIVE amount of games for $100 which probably worked out to between $1 and $1.50 each. Still plenty left behind too.

Then the real kicker was I got everything packed up and checked the 360, the warranty seal was intact and it still had everything, 60GB HD, Wireless Controller, cables even the Lego Indiana Jones/Kung Fu Panda bundle. Get home and ends up the disc tray is stuck, some quick work with a couple tweezers new drive belt and its working great again!

Haven't really had time to yard sale this season but I haven't found nothing except overpriced junk. I did find an N64 with Quake 2 and two other racing games for 3 bucks.

This is the second one I found. I found one last year too that I traded in to GS for $32 after bonuses and later regretted trading. I thought it would drop, but it seems to have held its price longer than any other wii release. I'm keeping this one! :)

That's a good deal on those star wars dvd's. I've been trying to pick up more movies and music at yard sales.
They had the other 3 movies, but I couldn't pull the trigger. I hope these are the original release and not the ones with the scenes added.

*waves hand* These aren't the DVDs you're looking for.

These are the DVD release with the original included:

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

There will be two discs, one with the updated version and a second with the "Original Theatrical" version. Of course Mr. Lucas picked the shittiest print for this release, I believe, out of spite.

BTW, the cover art is a re-make of original movie posters using publicity photos and stills from the movie. The original art can be seen on the back cover.

I live in CA and you find much, much, much more video game stuff than I do. Just what you've posted so far this year is more than I've seen at yard sales in my whole life and I've been doing this for a long time. I think the last time I found a yard sale with games was over a year ago and it was just a few common NES games. I did recently have some luck on the local B/S/T Facebook group, though (which I posted several pages back)...that's almost like a yard sale.

The yard/garage sales are winding down in my area to a trickle, but a really nice day got a lot of people to put on impromptu sales.  I hit about 15 or so and all were busts.  Saw some nice games at one sale but they were all over $30 each and a note written on each one saying you could get over $50 each on eBay.  I walked away.  I did pick up a Mattel Hockey handheld from a free box.

Last stop and I did find some good stuff all for $30:

Black Gamecube with a Gameboy Player  (no boot disk) and an Indigo controller

2 DK Bongos

GBA

M&M Adventures (cart only)

GC

Donkey Konga (disc only)

Donkey Konga 2

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3

Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell

Resident Evil Zero

Super Monkey Ball

Sonic Adventure 2 Battle

Luigi's Mansion

Eternal Darkness

Except for Donkey Konga, all have manuals and are black labels.

No cash on me today= no yard sales :(
I just had this discussion with a yard saling friend of mine: I would recommend never leaving your house with less than $300 cash. Always better to have the money and not need it than find tons of stuff and not have the money to buy. I have stumbled on yard sales every day of the week, in places you would never expect and those have been some of my best finds (yard sale on a Tuesday night on a dead end street with no signs or ads? You're likely the first person to show up leading to a motivated seller.)

So I keep $100 each in 5, 10 and 20 dollar bills in a wallet duct taped under my passenger side seat to make sure I always have it but it is not on me so I am not tempted to spend it. The different denominations are because people don't always have change. Then when I spend some I go to the bank ASAP and replenish and tape it back up.

Also makes great for a rainy day fund - we had a power outage two years ago from a pre-Halloween Ice Storm that lasted the better part of two weeks. A few days into the outage and all the ATMs in the area were out of cash so thank God I keep some in my car and some in my safe or I would have had no cash to live off of.

tomorrow will be the last half decent day for sales around here, not expecting much though.  NOBODY around here puts GC games up which is what I'm after most :(

Heck, for the GC lot on the last page, I would have easily paid $50 for that.  If you already have a copy of Melee you could easily sell the other for $25+ making everything else worthwhile.

Got beat to some games because I thought I had a new/untapped sources for stuff and I went there first...turns out one of my competitors who owns a store has access to the same place, but I did find a little bit of stuff. I have a lead on some more stuff, but they rarely pay off.

Things are slowing down drastically the last two weeks.

Did okay, but nothing compared to last month.

Mostly today I got DVDs. I ended up getting about 20 DVD seasons and 10 single dvds for an average of 1.50 each. There were a few good old tv mini-series I will sell that turned out to be worth like 15 or 20 dollars each. Also a few decent DVDs like a new My Cousin Vinny, Follow the Bird, etc.

Free Gameboy Mary Kate and Ashley game :/

A total of 3x 360 Guitar Hero controllers for $2.50 each

Diablo 2, the Sims, and Sim Theme Park all in the boxes for $2.50 each

Pokemon Monopoly for $2

Wii fit Plus with Wii Fit for $2

Sealed Kim Possible Magnetic statue/figure for $2

Sealed My Little Pony keychain for $1

Free Standing Mirror for the gf $5

10 McDonalds glasses from the late 70's for $2

Saw a lot of sales advertising video games today, but very few had decent prices. The first one I stopped at had a ton of systems and games - Genesis, PS2, original Xbox, Dreamcast, all with a few good games - but they wanted $80 for each and wouldn't sell a few games separately. That was disappointing.

I did get some other stuff though:

-A PS1 with all hookups and a third-party controller for $10. I overpaid a little but it was still cheaper than one off Ebay.

-Three 360 games: Fable II, Timeshift, and Prey for $10 total. All are complete. Fable II even has the 48-hour Gold pass unredeemed.

-WALL-E for $1.

-Sealed copy of Clive Barker's Jericho for PS3 for $1.

Edit: Went to test Timeshift and found Halo 3 in the case instead. Ah well.

Another slow week. The only game stuff all came from one yard sale;

Parasite Eve Black Label w/ Guide (both in great condition); $3

Silent Hill Black Label w/ Guide (same); $3

Aaaand that's it.

Out of curiosity, what store does he own? I see the People Play Games owner out every once in awhile.

Today was mostly books and movies. Didn't find any gaming related items except for a controller extension cable for the gamecube but it was so dirty I was afraid to touch it. I grabbed a bunch of thrillers and Tom Clancy hardback books they were only .25 each. Also I found two movies. They were superstar and Creep show for  $1 ea. I also found a vacum cleaner for $3.

It's bugging me that it seems to be becoming hard to find dvd's and cd's. So sick of finding a million VHS tapes.

but dont you live in the mountains or something? I always thought you were in the middle of nowhere (which to me is like an hour from best buy) ;)

I bought something that I have never dealt with before this weekend. I'm hoping the yard sale thread 'think tank' can help me out. Pics to come...

10-12-13 NEED HELP!

I know some things, but there many things I do not know...I bought this at a sale and I need help identifying it. I've been calling it a motor bike, but I am not sure if that is even correct. The guy is like me and doesn't know much about cars. From looking it over I can tell the brakes work, the throttle functions, fuel line looks ok, no melted wires, and the chain looks like it is ok.  I'm sure the battery is dead and it is missing the electric start cord. It is a 3 prong outlet about the size of a coaxial cable. I think it is electric start only. It runs on mixed fuel (oil/gas) like a snowblower. Any info would be appreciated.

Oh, I paid $5 for it. :bouncy:

Yesterday was a bust, and I found a sale selling a NES with Zapper for $25. If it was clean enough, it would've been an okay deal, but it was rather dirty.

Today, I bought four NES games for $10 total. Renegade, The Mafat Conspiracy, Wrecking Crew, and the Guardian Legend.
