Summer just got even hotter! The 2nd Annual Summer of Arcade burns up Xbox LIVE® Arcade

Xbox LIVE Arcade is turning up the heat! ‘Splode, race, and cowabunga your way through five weeks of this year’s hottest blockbusters in the second annual Summer of Arcade program.

Last year’s Summer of Arcade saw unprecedented success, with games on-par with retail blockbusters, including award-winning “Braid.” Now we’re burning it up again with five more scorching smash hits beginning Wednesday, July 22, 2009.

Xbox LIVE Arcade has raised the bar, delivering the biggest and best selection of downloadable games on any console. So grab a popsicle and turn up the air-conditioning because these games will keep you sizzling all summer long.

“MARVEL vs. CAPCOM 2” (Backbone Entertainment/Capcom): One of the most popular fighting games of all time, “MARVEL vs. CAPCOM 2,” arrives on Xbox LIVE Arcade. Choose from 56 legendary characters from Marvel Comics and Capcom history, including Ryu and Wolverine. With online multiplayer over Xbox LIVE and enhanced HD graphics, you decide who is the dream team in the ultimate tag-team fighting experience.

“Shadow Complex” (Chair Entertainment and Epic Games/Microsoft): The next evolution in downloadable games, “Shadow Complex” marries the quality and depth of a full retail title, the stunning visuals of Epic Games’ industry-leading Unreal Engine 3, and a classic side-scroller. “Set in the world of Orson Scott Card’s best-selling novel, “Empire,” Shadow Complex introduces a compelling universe in which you collect items and power-ups, and evolve your character into a force of destruction.”

Splosion Man™ (Twisted Pixel Games/Microsoft): Fools they were, to tread where knowledge should stay forbidden. For what emerged was not a man - it was a Splosion Man. "And all who saw him were sploded, for he was the fire and they were but meat." Able to splode himself at will, the Splosion Man launches his way through levels, an uncontainable force. From Twisted Pixel Games, developer of the award winning The Maw™, Splosion Man will keep you on your toes as you play through more than 50 single-player levels and 50 multiplayer levels.

“Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles™: Turtles in Time Re-shelled” (Ubisoft Singapore®/Ubisoft®): Cowabunga!
MvC2, TMNTiT, & most likely Shadow Complex for me
Same here, looks like I am going to need a 4000 point card.

Last Summer: Bionic Commando, Braid, and Castle Crashers

This Summer: TMNT, Marvel vs Capcom 2, and Shadow Complex

I love XBLA

Thanks to amazons 20cent cards I'll be able to pick a few of these up. MvC2 is a must but I'm on the fence with TMNT, it's gotta have extra crap in it or me to buy a game I already own.
Splosion Man™'s description really reminds me of 8 or 16-bit generic 3rd party game covers.
The meat chunks really remind me of Alien Hominid...and the art style is very Behemoth-esque, from a certain point of view.

Color me skeptical for now

Hmm.
MvC2 will be on the PS3.
I think TMNT is coming out on Wii, and the controller would probably be better for that. If not, than PS3.

I guess I'll try Splosion Man.

Wow, kind of disappointing.

It's not announced for sure that it will be $20 yet though, so it could still be $15-$30 for all we know.
Guess we'll find out in a few weeks...if it's anything short of an amazing, must play/have XBLA title that cost $20+, I will pass.
"Shadow Complex likely won't be less than $20" DOH!!

game looks cool, but I highly doubt I will pick it up for 20$

MvC2 at 15$ I mite have to buy tho.
That's a shame as I wanted to get Shadow Complex. I refuse to spend more than $10 for a game with DRM. If they were to release the game on disk, I'd easily pay full retail price.

Or maybe I can get some point cards on the cheap....

I would gladly play 20$+ for Shadow Complex. I do not see why not, it has a cool premise. it looks great and I can see myself having a blast playingit.

The good thing is that they are saying that this game will be rather long. There we go, instant buy.

MvC2 on the other hand, I will not be buying. I will not spend 15$ on a shoddy port of a fighting game.

Splosion Man is genna be great based off what i've been following on it. But yeah, Complex and TMNT are where it's at.

MvC2 for me as well, but I'm getting it on PS3.
Trials HD - 1200 pts...wow, fuck you, I'll just get it online through my sources at that price.
Seriously. I think I paid, what, 99 cents for it on steam? fuck $15.

Pretty sure I'm getting Splosion, MvsC2, and shadow complex. Depending on trial I might get Trials HD (it has some good word of mouth going for it).

They really should have priced TMNT at 800 points. And maybe they should have just upgraded the arcade graphics, made it 4 player co-op, and released it at 400 points. Games like the original TMNT, worms, UNO, and sonic 2&3 have shown you can make/port a fairly basic game and still rack up high sales.

Wow, I'm surprised that so many of those are 1200 points. Especially TMNT. 1200 is an absolute deal breaker. They must have thought that if they updated the graphics they could get away with pricing it the same as Castle Crashers. Looks like I'll be holding on to my points for other stuff.

For all of the hype that these featured "Summer of Arcade 2" games are getting I'm finding that I care more about the stuff that has been coming out lately or in the near future that they aren't hyping as much.

Getting TMNT,MVC2, and Shadow Complex. Although I could live without Shadow Complex. I mostly want MVC2, and TMNT. The fact there a week back to back is the best thing ever for me.

For the link lazy:

  • July 22: TMNT: Turtles in Time Re-shelled 1200
    microsoftpointslogosmall.gif
    ($15)
  • July 29: Marvel vs. Capcom 2 1200
    microsoftpointslogosmall.gif
    ($15)
  • August 5: 'Splosion Man 800
    microsoftpointslogosmall.gif
    ($10)
  • August 12: Trials HD 1200
    microsoftpointslogosmall.gif
    ($15)
  • August 19: Shadow Complex 1200
    microsoftpointslogosmall.gif
    ($15)

After 400 points these games lose their impulse buy factor for me (N+ was an impulse buy this week). I don't expect any games that actually had some work put into them to cost 400, but after 800 points it's almost a guaranteed no sale for me. I got burned on Castle Crashers and won't make that mistake again.

I'm suprised TMNT is so high... but also suprised Shadow Complex is so LOW! The game looks much better developed and concieved than the Penny Arcade games, or Watchmen. Heck, it's only 5 dollars more than Symphony of the Night was on XBLA, but it's a brand new game, and not a rehash. This means between them both... they balance out what I expected to pay. LoL.

Turtles, though... It's the Arcade game with new graphics. If they added some of the SNES stuff back in, or include the original game with online play, alongside the remake, I could see it being 1200. But as a straight port, and missing features that a game under the same name had, I think this is pushing it. Add the fact it's 4 player (guarenteeing groups of friends will buy it, and not just 1 or 2 friends), and I really think they could have put it to 800.

I'm sure the license has a lot to do with it. And Castle Crashers was SO much more packed with content, from what we know at this point. YOU GUYS BETTER GIVE ME UNLOCKABLES FOR THAT PRICE! LoL. Playing as Shredder, Rocksteady, Bebop, Krang, Casey Jones, and Usagi Yojimbo, would actually be worth it... (It's a 3D engine, it's not like this would be hard to do.)

We knew MVC2 would be that price, no suprise there. Trials HD... not for me, but it looks high quality. I've heard some claim it was their fav game, PERIOD, at E3. Isn't it heavily re-made for XBLA? I got the impression that it was.

Now on to Explosion Man! I'm so glad to see Twisted Pixel can provide such solid looking games, for a cheap price. The announcement that the game has some form of 4 player co-op, makes me wonder if Ex-Man here could outdo Turtles...

$70 total, for 5 very different games (meaning very few people would actually want ALL of them). SC looks like something I'd have paid 50 dollars for not too long ago, and I know I woulda paid $50 for MvC2 if this was an original Xbox or PS2 release. Hold off on a retail game this summer, along with there being no sales tax, and that pretty much means you can get them all for a small price difference, if you wanted. Considering I'm more hype for some of these, than many retail releases, and the overall price doesn't seem so unreasonable.

I just wonder what's coming out before then. Where's Military Madness? Bubble Bobble Neo? Diner Dash? The recently announced Bust A Move?

Burned with Castle Crashers, one of the best side-scrolling beat 'em ups ever? I can't feel sorry for you, dude.

Turtles is priced a bit too high. Could it have any new modes? Still, I'm getting TMNT, Marvel VS. Capcom 2, and Shadow Complex. You can still get 4000 points cards for $30 if you know where to look, which takes the sting off of those higher prices.

I don't think this is so bad, either. If the prices above are right, you can get all five games for 5600 points. I've gotten the 4000 msp for $30 a couple of times, so I don't think that deal is so rare. Assuming you can buy them at that price, though, makes all five games
($30 / 4000msp) * 5600 msp = $42

That's $8.40 per game, if all of them are equal, which I think is very reasonable.

Yeah, it's a good point that we're CAGs. With the amont of credit-building and deal-exploitage on this site, no arcade game should ever be seen as full price to a strong amount of us. By the time you get XBLArcade games, with points you already got for cheap due to other deals, or even from games you traded in that you got for cheap in the first place, how much are these games REALLY costing you? XD

Full prices are just for the average consumer! We all do a LOT better than those guys!

42 Dollars for 5 very different games now sounds like insane awesome. And you get to play them while communities are still live, rather than waiting for price drops, and trying to force friends/online acquaintances to join you! ^_^

You mean one of the worst online experiences that also deleted saved characters and didn't have a patch out (which I've heard didn't even fix the problems completely) until I'd already given up on it? The single player was good (until my save got deleted) but a single player beat em up isn't worth 1200 points to me.

Taking the $30 or cheaper 4000 points cards into account makes these deals better but I'm still only tempted to pick up Shadow Complex out of the five.

I bought it when it first came out. Beat it by myself, and now I've been playing it online some. I know it had those issues at first, but it seems fine now.

Castle Crashers also has local four-player, and like Jman said, the patch did fix save files being deleted. It's a shame that yours was erased, but you've also had more than enough time to get over it.
