3d fighters back in the days?

I don't know what do you guys thing back when VF 1 and Tekken first came out? To me they just blowed. The gameplay itself didn't have much depth to it. I never really started playing Tekken until Tekken 3 came out. As of at the time there were other great 2d fighers like Street Fighter Alpha and MK 2 out so the first generation of 3d fighting game was somewhat overlooked.

Yea I just got a Saturn and the level of depth is still there in VF. I have always been a VF fan. but never owned any of the console games until recently( mainly played in the Arcades up through 3, although I am not all that big on 3)

I had trouble getting past playing with block people. I did play VF a couple of times in the arcade, but I didn't really get on board until VF2, which I absolutely loved even though the characters were still blocky. I don't think either of the arcades near my college had tekken, but I remember spending a lot of money on Souledge when that came out towards the end of college.

I loved Tekken 2 and I never even owned the game. But I played the hell out of the demo that I had. Jun vs. Lei. I like 3D fighters a lot though, as well as the old 2D ones, Mortal Kombat especially. My favorite 3D one though is Dead or Alive on Dreamcast.

I couldn't understand the big deal about VF when it was in the arcades. I played it a few times but it never grabbed me.

I did get Tekken when it came out on the PSOne. I thought it was head and shoulders above VF.

And Battle Arena Toshinden was awesome. Too bad Takara decided to just phone in the rest of the series.

I'm a big fan of fighting games myself, I don't see how you guys call a Melee a fighting game more of a party beat-em up IMO.

it takes a lot of skill to be good at Melee. That is why I consider it a fighter. I think I put in well over 400 hours into that game. I had nearly every trophy until I lost my memory card

I got into 3D fighters with Soul Blade, which was my favorite fighter and i played it all the time, until Soul Calibur came out that is, but i also had a saturn and loved Virtua Fgither, but then again i love all fighting games, Fighting Vipers? I remember that game and i loved it, i haven't played it in ages though so for i remember it is probably horrible.

I found that series quite fun also since you can break off their armor and clothing. Fighting Vipers 2 also came out for the dreamcast btw.

I didn't get into 3D fighter until Tekken 2, and even then I never started taking them seriously until Fighters Destiny. Great game despite having genric as hell characters.
2D fighters still better than 3D fighters
i agree more than i ever have. im furious the next king of fighters is 3d. snk was 2d forever.

its not like they never have tried 3D before(Hyper 64 boards,FF: Wild Ambition), and many believe the only reason they are making a 3D game is so they can release the 2D ports onto the PS2(SCEA is to blame more than anyone)

I like more 2d fighting games than 3d, but soul calibur is definitely on the top of my list. For recent games, my order of preference goes something like...

Soul Calibur 2
Guilty Gear X2
Marvel vs. Capcom 2
Capcom vs. SNK 2
Tekken 4

I don't play Virtua Fighter only because I know no one else that does. If any of my friends would play it, I would pick it up. Fighting games are no fun without competition.

At first (or second, or third perhaps) glance, Melee is a party game. I would have agreed with you had you asked me two years ago only months after I first got it.

To get to the serious setting, you must eliminate some chaos factor - but not all, really.

A) Four player goes right out the window.
B) Get rid of stages like POkefloats, etc (anything that's random or moves too erradicly)
C) Items. Either turn them off or severely limit (no hearts, tomatoes, hammers, IE: Extremely random stuff that can completely turn the battle).

This isn't to say that you should only play on Final Destination or something - but the game really shows a different side when you take this in to consideration. That's one of hte things that's great about Melee. I can go to a tournament and competitively play a serious match - or I can fire up four player with some friends and have a fun-filled brawl. It's diverse, it's chaotic, but it can be very serious.

At first glance, outsiders might see Fox and Falco and consider them clones. It's true to a respect. Then you examine the details. Several of Falco's moves, while being the same, cause characters to react differently (his shine, down air, etc). His recovery is also weaker in addition to him being able to jump further. While they both have lasers.. Fox's can shoot faster, which a newbie would consider an advantage - but though Falco's is slow, it causes knockback which can be infinitely more useful. This means you can't play Falco and Fox the same way (you "can", but you know what I'm saying). The subtle differences actually.. make a difference. Someone who isn't good at the game and doesn't care to become good may not ever notice or understand the differences.

Smash Brothers also features the absolute absence of pre-set button combos. While there are only two "attack" buttons - they have different effects based on the directional influence of the stick (plus smash attacks), thus creating a varied amount of abilities and control with a limited, simple, and easy to use control setup.

But back to the combos. The lack of focus on pre-set combos gives freedom to the player. Button mashers don't win against a skilled Melee player. Period. It's not a feasible tactic in Smash Bros.

The more I play Melee, the less I believe in standard/traditional fighters - be they 2D or 3D in perspective. The more I believe they're battered and broken.

Melee has a surprising amount of depth and speed - you just have to look.

I loved Soul Blade and SF EX+A, liked Toshinden and Tobal, sort of tolerated DoA. I only got into Tekken with T3. As for VF and Melee, I never got into them period.

i dont really like fighters....i like wrestling games a lot though....but only when they're really good....that means one out of every 50 made a year....wwf war zone for ps1 and def jam vendetta....thats my shit

Again, word.

I'm the only one among my friends that notices a difference between dr. mario and mario.

weird to hear you call those good wrestling games...ill admit back in the day, warzone ruled, but it has no appeal at all today. def jam just sucked, it was the raping of one of the best wrestling engines ever made.

the best wrestling games are wwf no mercy, wcw world tour, wrestlmania the arcade game, powermove pro wrestling, giant gram 2000, fire pro d, and the smackdown series has been amazing the past 2 years

edit: i forgot saturday night slam masters, and the 2 wwf arcade games from the late 80's. and im sure a few others

HOLLA ATCHA BOI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was the mexican (forget his name, he had the crossface). Area 51 looked cool but had no good moves.

i dont know that djv sucked completely...but it definitely could've been a lot better....it did keep me playing from start to finish until i got every extra in the game (which wasn't a lot...but still)....but djv2 is gonna be a lot better i assure you

also...one of the main reasons these are my fav fighting games....no1 has yet to beat me in either one of 'em

i have here comes the pain....just haven't had a chance to play it yet

power move pro wrestling was pretty damn good though....i did forget about that one

check the avatar for back up. Wrestlemania the Arcade game is the best wrestling game of all time IMO. The Smackdown series is also fun unless your friend is always bitchin about you blocking his moves( he is overly repetitive).

No Mercy was also an amazing game. I remember having to unlock all the characters in that continuous battle mode, and finally getting to play as Shawn Michaels. The engine may not look very good today, but the gameplay is still very tight. Then again I loved all the early AKI games as well (the NWO / WCW ones, I stayed up several nights when I rented those).

I guess I must go out and purchase the Saturn Version of WWF: Wrestlemania the Arcade game now. Talking about it and my avatar staring me in the face make me feel the need to purchase another version of this classic game(yes I said classic, I love it that much)

i had a few problems with def jam. one was the ridicululous animations the characters did while just standing still! they were alywas animated no matter what. it totally threw the timing of things off for me. another was the over the top moves, i mean sure they're cool, but i'd rather have a realistic wrestling game

i do know that ea said "DJV is not a rasslin games, its a fighting game" but the only reason they said that was because they knew fans of the engine would be iffy about it, they just wanted to cover their own ass after making a slightly above average wrestling title

haha i own the saturn and the ps1 versions

i saw street fighter the movie at the exchange today for saturn for 2.50 and was considering picking it up but i cant remember if i have it or not, which sucked

I enjoyed the original DOA quite a bit, but fell in love with VF and Fighting Vipers on first site. Though both feel quite dated when I return to them now.

if you do swing by there anytime soon I would love to play it. I remember seeing that game in magazines and never getting to play it

I can pay through paypal

doa-rocked, best of the series
vf 1-3 just played too slow for me
fighting vipers - AMAZING! of of my first saturn games

I would just love to be able to play as Van Damme though. It has to be the funniest thing ever

VF2 is pretty fast when I play it. I only started playing it today and have probably put in at least an hour and a half.

the worst part about vf2 i feel is when u jump, you float way too much, i cant even fathom how many time i floated over my opponent and out of the ring.

i like VF kids tho, big heads make EVERYTHING better

the jumping is crazy, but it does not bother me too much. I was suprised at how well the game looked. For something almost 10 years old the graphics are pretty good

I don't think DOA was the best of the series, DOA 3 is pretty good... it is pretty deep for a fighter that not many people like, i persoanlly like it a lot.

i only played doa 3 a few rounds, but it played worse than 2, which was worse than 1...but 2 was decent.

its kinda sad cuz back when doa first came out i was so excited about it, at the time i loved 3d fighters, tekken 2 was THE reason i bought a ps1, and when bloody roar, tekken 3 and doa all came out, it was amazing! too bad doa couldnt have kept getting better

main reason I bought an N64 was for KI Gold. I played that game to death. I know it ain't the greatest, but I have always loved the KI series

imo the best n64 fighting game is fighter's destiny. at adds a whole level of depth that i never even knew could exist! too bad it got terrible reviews and sold nothing, because me and my bro could play it for hours, even today

DOA3 is just as deep as most of the other 3D fighters out there... but not a lot of people like it, as was obviously just proven.

Killer Instinct i always liked as well, not may people like KI either.
