When someone says "rpg" my mind goes to turned based/grid based combat rpgs (usually jrpgs) . If he finds that boring, then rpgs aren't for him. Shadow Wars is easy to understand and eases you into the genre, like I said it was my first strategy rpg. I had only played turned based before that game. Also, Dragon quest is a classic and ix is the most modern and newbie friendly of the bunch. I still stand by my recommendations. Denpamen is an rpg of sorts, but I found it very easy, almost too easy. I felt that it somewhat played itself, without leaving you much choice in commands. Probably good for an absolute beginner, but if he's played golden sun, he can play DQ.
See, I've been playing RPG's my whole life and I can't stand grid-based(though turn based is fine by me). I still want to try Fire Emblem Awakening, so we'll see how I like that.

I know you said no already to Pokemon, but unless you have a really good reason for not wanting to play Pokemon I think you should start there.

Aside from that your best bet is probably to go back through the regular DS library. Maybe Chrono Trigger?
The world of Pokemon holds no interest to me.

Did you unlock the special stages? Those really inject some challenge into it. I loved 3D Land. I wouldn't call it the best 3DS game, but it's still damned good and easily the best 3DS platformer.
Yeah, I unlocked and played everything up until special world 8-2 before I lost the cartridge last year. The game was my first true hyped game on the 3DS and made me despise playing on it for quite a few months afterwards. I don't think I've played more of a game trying to extract enjoyment out of it just because I love its line (3D Marios).

Thanks for the reply. I think next time I get happen to get another nintendo eshop card I will probably end up getting that game.
I think you'll really like Friday Monsters! It's just so charming! If you have no interest in Japan of the 70s (I think it's the 70s), it might be kind of boring for you. It reminds me a little of the Sesame Street neighborhood, in the city yet somehow very rural feeling, lots of kind people. I with there was a whole game like Friday Monsters, maybe with more gameplay. Friday Monsters really is more like a visual novel.

Can anyone recommend a RPG for someone who generally doesn't play or care for RPG's? After finishing Find Mii, I found I wanted to give a real one a shot.
The respones to this question, for me, just highlight how few JRPGs there actually are on the 3DS, underscored by how many there are in Japan. The fact we have to dip into the DS library for recommendations is depressing and telling. But, since we are, I would suggest any of the Dragon Quests, particularly Dragon Quest V. What an awesome game. And you'll do just fine with it if you're familiar with Golden Sun.

As for the 3DS, you might enjoy Etrian Odyssey Untold. Try what demos there are on the eShop and see what you think of them. But one you'll want to buy as soon as it launches (please, so we can have the sequel and more RPGs) is called Bravely Default. There will be a demo in January, I believe, and the game itself comes out Feb 7, I think? That's the game you really want, and in the future when anyone asks for any RPG recommendation at all, that is going to be the go-to game, for beginners, for nostalgic people, for advanced players, for anyone.

Nobody has made this suggestion from what I can tell, but the Mario & Luigi games would probably be a good time for newbies since their battle system is simple and intuitive and the story is a bit more light-hearted and humorous than most games out there. There's a demo on the eShop for the newest game, Dream Team, that should give you an idea of what to expect.

Great call! Totally forgot about that. Mario and Luigi: Dream Team is probably the best suggestion out of everything currently available for the 3DS. Great writing.

It may just be a start, but it's really nice entering that $50 eShop card that I got on my 3DS, buying a couple of games, and going into the eShop on my Wii U and seeing the remaining balance there without any hassle needed to make it work. Now they just need to get the rest of that stuff to be platform agnostic.

This.

I knew there was a game I was forgetting about.

How exactly does the eshop work? The nintendo website is really lacking in information.

If I buy one of these games, I'm assuming it gets downloaded to the SD card. Will I be able to transfer the SD card to another 3DS and play the games?

Is there some sort of account system where my purchases are linked to so that I can redownload them (in case I lose/break the SD card, 3DS, or w/e)?

Purchases are locked to the 3DS itself unless you do a system transfer to a new 3DS. They're also tied to your account, but that doesn't go beyond the system it's purchased on. You are free to redownload the games onto that 3DS as much as you want, but if you're afraid of issues, you can at least back-up the contents of the SD card onto your PC for safe keeping.

Though if it's lost, stolen or breaks you still have to get with Nintendo and hope they'll do a remote transfer of the licenses for you.

So I'm sitting here at Starbucks listening to my mom repeat back jibberish she heard on Fox News, and they have "google Starbucks" wifi. Where the hell are my fucking streetpasses? Least i deserve for sitting here in this wretched din of screaming caffeine addicts and howling children.

Yeah, I go to Starbucks just for 3DS downloads too. I can't seem to get the eshop to work on my 3DS otherwise. I always come home from there reeking of coffee. I hate Starbucks.

And this is why Nintendo really needs to get it together with their account system.  After spending some time waffling I've been very close to buying a 2DS lately as I keep hearing about how comfortable it is to use and finding myself not playing my 3DS XL as much as I would like because it's not particularly comfortable to hold.  Then it hits me that oh wait, all the digital stuff I won't be able to play on it and I won't be able to easily transfer back and forth even.  Sure I've still got 25+ physical games but it's an inconvenience at minimum and reason enough to lean back towards not buying one.

Almost bought vvvvv and cave story but then saw that they were included as part of humble bundle 4.  I knew their names seemed familiar.  So anyone else who also bought the humble bundles, you may already have them.

Yeah, I tried playing Cave Story on the PC and while I could see the appeal of the game trying to play it on a keyboard just didn't work for me. Been work buying it again on 3DS for me just because the controls feel so much more natural.

Or you know... you could just use a controller on the PC.

Most people that don't play games too often on their PC don't have them, and some prefer using mouse & keyboard for most PC games. Re-buying a game on sale(that was already relatively cheap to begin with) is cheaper/easier than going out and purchasing a controller.

Went a little crazy and bought all of these.

It was a pain having to set up a Nintendo Network ID from scratch and then link my Club Nintendo ID, which I had forgotten.

All this just to be able to buy stuff on the eShop, even after I bought Ace Attorney: Dual Destines when it was released. That reminds me I have to buy the DLC one of these days.

Try AT&T locations. Most of the time I don't even have to go in. Even when they are closed I can just stand outside of one and get StreetPasses and Nintendo Zone with no problem.

Any suggestions before the sale ends tomorrow? Already have Crimson Shroud and Attack of the Friday Monsters. Must be an exclusive to the 3ds.

For those of you thinking about buying VVVVVV, the PC version is $0.49 for the next six hours on Steam.  It will run on just about any computer and, unlike a lot of platformers, it seems to work perfectly with just a keyboard (test out the demo to see what I mean).

EDIT: I do have one question though for people who have already played the 3DS version.  On the PC, the movement feels a little "slippery."  Am I correct in assuming that this is just part of the game's design and that it's the same way on the 3DS?

I haven't had much luck with those. I don't know if they don't have their Nintendo Zones set up or what. It's stupid. Even the local Best Buy doesn't. I wish Nintendo would make them set their crap up. The only reliable places I've found are Barnes and Noble, McDonald's, and Starbucks (but apparently not the new one).

Google "HomePass". Trust me.

I grabbed:

-Liberation Maiden - it triggered a Macross/Robotech response in me :robot: .

Besides, I missed out on Metal Wolf Chaos... ain't passing this one up.

-SteamWorld Dig - got the impression it had a Metroidvania vibe to it. I find out soon enough

-Attack of the Friday Monsters - chill game to relax to.

-Starship Damrey - been a long time since I've had a Myst-rage episode...

Saw vid gameplay of the rest and well, no thank you.

Now, I just gotta make time to switch everything over from my launch 3ds to my Zelda XL (still haven't cracked it open).

BTW, Thanks FriskyTanuki for keeping this going :applause:

Is Project X Zone worth it? I played the demo and it was cool, but seems like it may get repetitive.
I liked the demo too and so far the actual game is fun. I mean for $15 if I get a 5 or so hours out of it I'll honestly be happy. If you're a fan of a lot of the characters that goes a long way to making up for it being a little repetitive because they make funny remarks about each other sometimes and it's just funny to see the premise come together in a "real world" situation.

Hey question, perhaps a dumb one, but am I able to redeem those US digital game codes people are selling on the forum on my 3DS XL purchased in Canada and all information already set for the Canadian eShop? I remember reading the notice after the firmware update that states all funds tied to a specific eShop are lost if you change region or something so I'm not too sure how this all ties in together. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Wow...so apparently "through 1/1" doesn't actually mean that. I'm new to the eShop and 3DS, but with every other system I have when a certain day is advertised for a sale...it includes that whole day. Is this common practice for the eShop? Is it safe to assume that the deals that go "through 1/2" are going to up and vanish before 1/2 is over?

Seems like an odd way to advertise something...

You realize you can just plug in a controller, right? I played through Cave Story with my DS3. Though I still think its worth owning this masterpiece in portable form :bouncy: .

Nah, Sony updates whenever the fuck it feels like it, lol (typically 3-6PM EST). Don't Steam sales turnover at 1PM EST? And I'm not sure if this is related, but Nintendo's base of operations are like 12 hours ahead of us.

They don't say "through 1/1", but just that it ends on 1/1. They've been updating at that same time since the Wii Shop launched, which is just over seven years now. It's right at the top of the OP, so it's not hard to find at all.

Well, according to what they say on the eShop on my 3DS right now, I just bought Steamworld and Mutant Mudds, and they both say clearly on the ad "through 1/2" (so I know for a fact the ones I missed said through 1/1 because I planned on buying them tonight...which is 1/1). No big deal though. Now I know how the eShop sales work.

Ya, and eShop sales end at about 12 EST the day the sale ends. It's borderline false advertising in my opinion. But Nintendo will be Nintendo.

If you didn't know, you didn't know...so I'm not suggesting you guys shouldn't feel frustrated. It would be nice if everyone standardized a 12AM PST turnover, but that just isn't the case. Companies are based in different time zones, close at different hours. There are number of factors so the best you can do...is a) not wait until the last minute and b) gain a general of sense of how each storefront operates. Because if you're going to claim Nintendo is "false advertising", the same should be said of everyone.
