Ah, ok. I got concerned when i saw that everyone but Amazon was out of EO4 and SMT4, both selling for more than MSRP.

You can keep an eye on the outlet - I got my copy of SMT IV for $28.  While I'd always prefer the digital format for convenience, I'd much rather have the resale option for about the same cost.

Meh. eShop down. Meh. I was able to pay for the Acorn game earlier...and then crash. Never got to download. Ah well. Not like I don't have other things to play.

Atlus doesn't really discontinue their own games, so they just go out of stock everywhere until the next printing of discs/cards are sent out.
Etrian Odyssey I - III were out of stock (and selling for double or triple MSRP) for several years before they were reprinted earlier this year. Waiting for price drops on Atlus games is always a gamble. (Though with digital versions at least you'll never have to worry about them becoming completely unavailable.)

Guess I have to run and snag an eShop card or two tonight. Still a few titles I'm wanting to pick up before the BBY/eShop sales expire.

Amazon Outlet? Isn't that for used copies?

I actually want the physical copies for convenience. I don't like the way Nintendo ties the games to the device rather than account. Rather than finishing a game and then giving it to my wife, I have to buy her a separate copy? F that.

I just got a 3DS and love RPGs. I love RPGs, and picked up Fire Emblem Awakening already. I'm on the fence about getting Etrian Odyssy IV and/or Shin Megami Tensei IV off the eShop. I haven't played either series before (I just got the EOIV demo, now that the eShop is working), and I generally prefer to have a physical copy since that way I could possibly give the game to my wife or daughter to play without having to give them my 3DS.

But taking a look, it seems that EOIV is going for $30+ on Amazon, and everywhere else is sold out, while SMTIV is 50+. Is that just due to Christmas sales, and I should wait until they come back in stock and go on sale again? Or are they discontinued, and I should get them on the eShop while I can?
If you're in no rush for a new rpg to play, Atlus has had several eshop sales, so worst case scenario you pick them up the next time they go on sale on the eshop(which would be holiday 2014 at the latest imo).

I also don't think they're in danger of going out of stock indefinitely any time soon. New copies of devil survivor overclocked still are floating around out there. Although admittedly, the $20 for the eshop version is probably the best price you can score that game for(it's also a game I'd recommend if you're enjoying fire emblem, as it's also a srpg).

These are probably the best prices you'll see for these games, so if their cheapness and desire to play them now overrides your desire to share them with your family, dive in.

Oh, didn't realize Overclocked was an srpg, good to know. I'm not hurting for games to play, just didn't want to miss out. Thanks for the advice!

Just got a 3ds last week, started playing with it after Xmas & checking all this stuff out. The eshop being down is just wonderful timing. :whistle2:(

Anyway, I picked up a $35 card at Best Buy since it was on sale (and I was shamelessly hitting spotpass locations). Figured I'd get something from the shop like Phoenix Wright and spend the rest on Wii VC. Didn't actually read the card until I got home to see it was only good for 3ds and Wii U. Double :whistle2:(

Anyway, what are other "best" download only titles in the shop? Anything in this sale? Not like I can really browse the shop....

Yeah that is a bummer that Nintendo abandoned the Wii virtual console, but with the unified balances on 3DS and Wii U it gives me hope that Nintendo will work towards future proofing their digital content going forward. Nintendo really didn't make the full jump into online until this generation, so I'm hoping they get with the times. It's probably going to be at least another year until we see a full account based system, online website access, etc.

I'd recommend Cave Story if you haven't picked it up before. Really solid Metroid style game. There's also a ton of Atlus RPGs on sale if you're into those types of games.

Steamworld Dig for sure...and check this thread for many, many more great games.

Pushmo is considered the best by many. Id recommend crimson shroud as it's currently on sale, but only if the idea of playing a table top rpg with a narrative is intriguing to you.

Well get Phoenix Wright and then there ya go, you've used almost that whole card.

I agree. To tell you the truth, the days of Atlus becoming hard to find and rare is not the same it was back then. The reputation that Atlus received a lot of hype for certain games were during the "Digital Devil Saga", "Growlanser", moreso with the "Nocturne" release. And with some of the PSX, early DS and late PS2 releases. But the last Atlus game that I had to pay a lot for because they were once scarce before a reprint was "Nocturne"...can't believe I paid $70 for it back then for a first print copy.

But now that Atlus is owned by Sega, despite Atlus being operated differently, they are still under Sega which wants to see a profit. And really, for anything post-2009, I don't think I have seen a release from them that has been difficult to find.

As for "Etrian Odyssey" games, it's important to note that these games are not for everyone. I would look on YouTube before buying.

From what's on sale:

Cave Story - Platforming shooter with some Metroid elements in there

SteamWorld Dig - Metroid-style digging game

VVVVVV - C64-style platformer with a Metroid-style open world map

From everything else that I own:

HarmoKnight - Rhythm Platformer Action game from the Pokemon developer

Picross e/e2/e3 - More Picross. Enough said.

Pushmo/Crashmo - Great puzzle games

There are demos on the eshop for etrian odyssey games. I'd recommend trying them rather than watching youtube videos. Part of the fun of the series is exploring and mapping out the labyrinth. That part won't really come across well by just watching gameplay videos.

The fact that many of these atlus games are part of a series pretty much ensures reprints/eshop sales on the prior titles.

Yeah EO and that P4G CE were about the only things from the last few years that ended up harder to find.

EO is like an old school dungeon crawler with an emphasis on drawing your own map. Very good if you're inclined towards such things. Millenium Girl adds a heavy dose of story and both it and IV add a lot of casual friendly features that make it easier to get into them if you so choose. Still, not for everyone like he said and there's a hefty demo for Millenium Girl whose progress you can carry over to the full game and is probably the one most newcomers should go for.

The description of EO3 scared me, it sounded like something I wouldn't enjoy.

But EO4, with its friendlier mapping and easier mode, sounded much better. I just grabbed the demo, and had a lot of fun with the tutorial dungeon.

Glad that Fire Emblem Awakening has an easier mode too. I'm loving the move towards a more casual approach to these hardcore RPGs. I'm happy to leave the stiff challenge and perma-death to those with more time on their hands.

Is Shin Megami Tensei IV worth the purchase? $30 for a DD is a bit pricy for me.

I like Fire Emblem, Tactics, XCOM. Is this anything like it. I've read reviews and they rave about it, but I'm concerned it may be too weird/dating sim/anime for me.

Anyone pick this up that's never played the series?

First game I played in the series and it is very good but as we discussed some pages back it can have very unfriendly difficult spikes. It's not like the games you mentioned, it's a dungeon crawler, so you select menu options then go run around the dungeon you need for the quest and fight stuff in turn based JRPG battles. I haven't gotten to Devil Survivor Overclocked yet but that's more of an SRPG with JRPG combat so that might float your boat a little more if you want something like the things you listed. Oh and SMT IV has a sort of Pokemon element to it but with demons and talking/bribery.

Does anyone know how exactly the eShop credit and gift card work, with regard to multiple systems? For example, if we have two 3DSs, can we only setup a Nintendo ID on one of them and thus use the same eShop account and balance for both? Or does each 3DS require a separate eShop account?

Is it possible to buy a game on one 3DS and then transfer it to another, assuming you don't want to do a system transfer but just that one game without deleting anything on the target system?

A Nintendo ID can only have one WiiU and one 3DS attached to it. You can do a total system transfer with that ID but that's about it.

Try Devil Survivor Overclocked for $20 if you want something like fire emblem. Very good strategy rpg incorporating many key elements of the SMT series. If you like that games mechanics, and are fine with turn based rpg's, definitely pick up smt iv.

The fact that you mentioned dating sim makes me think you're confusing the last couple of Persona games with SMT. Persona is milk chocolate to SMT's dark chocolate. SMT explores pretty dark themes. There is no dating sim aspect in SMT IV.

Persona 4 = the only reason I bought a Vita.  Sold after playing with 120 hours on the clock.

Fire Emblem = the only reason I bought a 3DS.  Still on the first run after 50 hours and can't stop until I see all the supports.  Plan to keep it after finishing, unlike the Vita.  I think it is the much better system, but it just doesn't have the game pulls that the 3DS has.

Honestly if I hadn't sold the Vita I doubt I'd have stopped playing P4G at all and I was hoping the other SMT games on the 3DS would have some of the same addiction, but like FE the story and characters make the game for me.

Chibi Robo Photo Finder $9.99 on eShop 1/9!

Chibi Robo: Park Patrol is one of my favorite DS games (I even bought the Canadian version on eBay so it wouldn't have the "only at Wal-mart" BS on the front cover)

Ordered another eShop card at Best Buy tonight.  20% off ends tomorrow...

hmm I need more recommendations. haha. I bought

Attack of Friday Monsters
Liberation Maiden

thinking of
Crimson Shroud
Acron
Mutant Mudds
Mighty Switch Force 1 and 2

but if I have some on them on WiiU and Vita is it still worth it?

It's not a normal Chibi-Robo game.  It's like a Chibi-Robo side game.  You use Chibi-Robo to find real world items of certain shapes in order to fill in a museum.  Don't go into it thinking it's like the GameCube or DS games.  You're forewarned. :p

Yeah, that's what I gathered from watching the game trailer. Still, looks very happy and has Chibi-Robo. Gotta buy.

So glad the east coast is back online with the eShop. Downloaded every demo that I was interested in. (Btw, not all demos show up under the demo category. To find them all, type demo in the search box.)

Downloaded my Super Acorn Turbo that failed to download yesterday. I've gotten Crimson Shroud, Attack of the Friday Monsters, Starship Damrey, Witch and Hero, Phoenix Wright, and Crazy Construction. Really happy about this influx of sales and the discounted cards at Best Buy. It wouldn't surprise me if I bought another one today.

In anticipation for a new Chibi-Robo game, I just picked up Patrol Park brand new for $10 off of eBay. Now to find me another copy of the original on GameCube...

I was gonna mention this, especially for utopianmachine, anyone who doesn't have Chibi Robo Park Patrol for the DS should definitely pick up a copy from eBay/Half.com/Amazon/Gamestop. You can get it between $5-$10 used/new from any of those places. I'd recommend that before buying the new eShop camera game. The stupid Wal-mart exclusivity all but killed it in sales and widespread popularity.

When it comes down to it, I consider CR:pP my favorite DS game.

It's a great game, no doubt about it. Definitely worth the time to hunt down a copy. I did find it funny, however, that it was a Wal-Mart exclusive when I first bought it - it even had that hideous "Wal-Mart Exclusive" flower logo on the boxart. But its what is on the inside that counts and the game is definitely great. Just wish Nintendo would re-release the GameCube game and even Giftopia in HD. Hell, bring over Captain Rainbow while they are at it...

...a pipe dream, I know.

Hey guys, I was wondering if you can help me out. I just got one of those nintendo eshop cards, I am interested in the Shin Megami games but I never played them before and haven't really played that many rpgs. I was wondering if anyone can give me any recommendations, which one I should buy? Explain the differences to me between the 3 on sale.

Battery's dying, buy SMT IV! Bye!

Thanks! I just found this out myself today when I thought some demos had been removed :)

Well, my personal desire would be for you to buy everything Atlus has on sale. :)

Aside from that: Devil Survivor Overclocked is a strategy RPG with some visual novel mixed in. SMT IV is, as others have said, a bit of a "dungeon-crawler;" however, the dungeons aren't randomly-generated or anything. I don't think of it as a dungeon-crawler, myself; it's more of a standard JRPG with Monster Hunter quest systems mixed in. And finally, the last (the name of which escapes me) is a remake of a Sega Saturn RPG. I think they're all great. Read some reviews, watch some videos, or just buy them all, and buy the Etrian Odyssey games, too. :)
