Yeah, never played that either.

I'm noticing I have played a lot of mainstream, AAA games over the years. I need to start branching out, and I think I started with P4G.
Yeah people on this sub have been talking up Shadow Wars since it came out. I thought it looked like a shitty launch title cash-in myself, but got it for $7 sometime last year (I think) and was pleasantly surprised. Beyond the main SP storyline there are a ton of challenge maps, so if you just can't get enough strategy gaming, there is a LOT of game to be had for the price. Like Frisky said, it's basically Advance Wars, just not as polished. Easy to recommend.

Wish I had seen the CAG reviews of Rayman Origins 3DS before I jumped on it. It looks like ass.
I actually played the Vita version to 100% and it's the only game I have ever gotten a platinum on(the only game I ever tried to anyways). Right after that, the 3DS version was released and I tried the demo, and couldn't believe how poor it looked. I know the 3DS isn't going to show as well as the Vita, but it is very bad looks wise.

Over at the 3DS forums on Gamefaqs, they swear the gameplay is still intact, and if the 3DS is the only way to play this game, you should go for it. I say if this is your only way to play this "Better than Mario 2D platformer", buy another way to play it. LOL

2D Mario has really been on the decline over the years, and like most games "N" once did better than everyone else, Rayman Origins is another example of how the industry has left them behind, and just making the same stale game over and over doesn't get the job done anymore.

Gamestop was selling Shadow Wars for $2.99 used not long ago. Managed to pick up a copy. Didn't get to play it much since my son hogs the 3DS all the time, but was impressed with the first few stages I played. Love turn-based strategy games.

I did the exact same thing, Platinum'd the Vita version and then tried the 3DS demo. Yuck. A resolution hit alone wouldn't be a deal breaker even if it doesn't look as pretty, but the Circle Pad for me just isn't precise enough, especially when the game runs so choppy. It's a mess, and it's clear why the port was delayed by almost year.

It's available on Vita, PS3, 360, PC, Wii, AND most of the Origins levels are included in Rayman Legends (Vita, PS3, 360, PS4, XBO, Wii U).

Most people are going to own one of those other platforms. Do the right thing. Avoid the 3DS version at all costs.

I can't decide if I should get Shantae and the Pirate's Curse now for the Wii U, or wait for a similar sale on the 3DS version.

Portability & 3D seem to make more sense; anybody that's played them have an opinion?

I've only played the 3DS version, but the Wii U port was not originally planned when they were making the game assets, so I'm not sure how well the sprites transfer to the big screen.

Nintendo's press release says Shantae 3DS and Switch Force 2 will be on sale on the 26th. Does it say anywhere how much they'll be?

Reminder that there's only 1 week left to redeem Club Nintendo game codes which expire July 31.  This also includes the Mewtwo DLC which has to be redeemed through the game itself.  I'll try to throw out another reminder next week as well.

Here are the new deals for today:

Just curious, whatever happened to the Miku theme that was supposed to be coming out? Also, finally going to get Shantae so that's cool. I missed it the last time it was on sale.

Mighty Switch Force 2 isn't really much better or worse than MSF1. Using a fire hose is just a bit more satisfying than a gun but beyond that it's the same exact crap. I think it was cheaper in the last big Wayforward sale too but, this ain't Steam, kiddos. Only Atlus is your sales friend here.

I don't think much of it but I won't begrudge you dopes jumping on the bait.

Shantae though. Yeah it's pretty but it goes nowhere and does nothing. It IS better than Xeodrifter now that I played that hunk of crap but it doesn't quite reach good. Note that Pirate's Curse is on PC and WiiU as well for those who have diversified gaming portfolios.

There's no point in Nintendo adopting cross buy if they're going to half-ass it, which they always do. Cross buy is stupid in its current state without a unified account structure, which is also necessary to transfer save files and sync progress.

EDIT: I also don't think much of singing of Nintendo's decline. They have looked weak at all times ever since the N64 but they managed to stay in the game. That's what they do and how they work. But they have created nothing but extremely polished and clever games recently. Splatoon was an incredibly full-throated support of a new IP. Captain Toad was a great ride. 3DW was decently polished, and I will maintain that no NSMB game is bad. NSMBU by itself is excellent and NSLU even more so. If you include Dong Freeze, one of the best damn platformers since the SNES era, then they are not too far behind the curve.

They're not at the top of the game, not even just comparing against their former selves, but Nintendo STILL has the magic touch. Even their weak games stand ahead of the competition. I mean, hell, Capcom tried to do the same thing Nintendo did with working with western studios. Nintendo gave us Metroid Prime, Dong Freeze, and Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon, who all shine over Capcom's efforts, DmC (And I LIKED DmC, still do.), LP3, Strider, DR2. None of these are especially bad but Nintendo still stands head and shoulders over them.

EDIT2: I don't need to tell you this but SoR2's 3D is so good it makes me think impure thoughts about my 3DS.

Well I just traded 4 snack packets of Frosted Flakes to Miyamoto for 10 eShop games of my choosing so you guys might want to stock up on Box Tops for Schools and whatnot so you can afford the Mighty Switch Force games.

I like Mighty Switch Force and Shantae. What puzzle platformers and Metroidvania games do you think are better then? I'm looking for suggestions on what to play. Preferably ones available for 3DS or Vita since I mostly only play portable nowadays. I like the GBA Metroids, Limbo, Stick it to the Man and on Android Leo's Fortune. I didn't like Guacamelee, Fez, Thomas was Alone, or Boxboy.

I completed 5 dungeons on Etrian Mystery Dungeon and gave up. The game started out fun, but the idiotic AIs kept getting themselves killed before I could help them. Luckily it trades in for the same price I paid, so no harm there. I guess I'll just wait until the new Pokemon Mystery Dungeon comes out.

Tl;dr Don't recommend Etrian Mystery Dungeon

Yep, which is why I went through 95% of the game with a dancer, and had parties only for FOEs and bosses.

It's funny you mention that.. I was looking at the new Etrian out next week and I remember not bothering to complete Dungeon.  At all.  I just didn't care after a few of the dives.

For me, controlling the AI was part of the fun of the game. Once you understood their quirks, you could play them pretty decently and keep them out of trouble.

It is a game of herding cats though. I don't recommend it because it's just not a balanced game at all. It's clearly not a Shiren game but Shiren left all his toys lying around and none of them serve any purpose because spacing is not even remotely as important in EMD as it was in Shiren. And then late game enemies just take way too much damage to the point where a monster house isn't "Oh shit Im gonna die" it's "Oh shit the level is now gonna take 30 minutes longer."

Guacamelee... oh, well then.

Just off the top of my head, Gunpoint. Crush3D. The Rabi Laby games to include Witch's Cat(These are an acquired taste.). Wario Land 2 and 3. Yumi's Odd Odyssey.

Metroidvanias are a genre I don't have a lot in my head. Shovel Knight doesn't count but it is still superlative. Guacamelee is my go-to but you vetoed that. Shadow Complex and Rochard maybe? Proper Metroids, of course (But not Castlevania Metroids because they all ruin themselves with that stat system.).

The Vita doesn't have anything to match this because the Vita has no games at all. The closest I could get to that genre on the Vita is Counterspy which is more of a light stealth, sometimes time crisis cover/light-gun shooter without a light-gun thing with a roguelike bent.

To me, Shantae is just boring. It's pretty but there's just nothing interesting about the platforming or the combat. SatPC is still easily the best of that lot by miles and almost playable. They all certainly aren't as aggressive and soulless a waste of time as Xeodrifter. I just continue to be triggered when I remember they ask $20 for SatPC when SK is six times the game SatPC is for $15.

Has anybody played "Phantom Thief Stina and 30 Jewels?" I've been interested in it since I heard about it a year ago, but I've been waiting (in vain) for a sale.

Someone must have messed up last week, it will probably go up with the game in September. Though maybe it will be included with the digital version like in Japan? Argh I can't wait.
I completely understand how you feel. Yeah, I kinda thought it was weird they would even put a theme out with over a month to go but it'd be cool. I know the delay for this game has been crazy. I was so ready when they first announced it. At least I know it'll be worth it. Well I think it will be. I really hope this does well in the west on Nintendo. The more Miku the better. Lol.

It didn't stay on my 3DS for very long, that's for sure. You walk into a giant team freeze tag cluster fuck and walk back and forth across it to get codes and enter codes while avoiding the tag chief. That's pretty much it. I never unlocked cute cop animu girl mode because there was no way I was finishing cute thief animu girl mode.

Bandai Namco posted on Twitter that the Dragon Ball Z: Extreme Butoden demo will be available to download on 8/6 at 9:00AM PT

If you just got EOU2 they're doing limited time free DLC again:

Permanently Free

  • Yggdrasil Veteran: While there will be new portraits for each class in EO2U, the classic portraits from the original Etrian Odyssey will return as FreeLC for veterans that want to give their party a retro look.
Free Until Aug. 10

  • Highlander’s Return: The Protagonist’s class from EOU makes a triumphant return in EO2U! This class focuses on sacrificing portions of their health to obliterate enemies and buff party members. Highlander Grimoire stones and the class is available in Story mode as well! (99 cents/CA$1.49 after Aug. 10.)
  • Hidden Hot Springs!: There’s rumors of a secret hot spring inside the snow-covered 3rd Stratum! Can you find the hot springs and dig them up? As an added bonus, completing the quest in Story Mode will unlock special portraits for Arianna and Chloe! ($2.49/CA$3.49 after Aug. 10.)

I never played the first Etrian Odyssey. Probably gonna grab the first off the eshop. However, one of the many YouTube vids I watched on the second said they didn't produce a lot of copies and could become harder to find. Any truth to that statement?

Are you talking about EO1 or EOU1?

No idea about print run on EOU2 and it's really hard to judge with Atlus games these days. I can't think of anything recent, off the top of my head, that's been exceedingly hard to find. Even most of their special edition first run copies that have the extras seem to be relatively easy to find months down the road. EO has gone from super niche and hard to find to one of their more known series so I don't think it will be too hard. Plus Atlus constantly runs eShop discounts so you can always grab it that way down the road.

Are you talking about EO1 or EOU1?
EOU I'm sure, don't think the DS games are available digitally.

gamestops around here got 1 copy

I still say EO4 is a far better starting point but EOU1 is a solid game. EO4 is still mechanically the best RPG I've ever played. But even the weaker Etrian is head and shoulders above most.

While playing Persona 4 reminds me why I dropped RPGs. I love it but the RPG parts are such trash.

I would certainly appreciate you folks warning me of EO2U time release DLC packages as they come. I preordered it straight into the backlog.

Having $15 in Nintendo money when nothing I want is on sale feels like having a retirement fund in a currency that doesn't exist anymore.
