i must say, i think i'll definitely be getting into used dvds from now on. along with broken flowers, i bought the OOP E.T. 2-disc at my local FYE this week. i was quite surprised at the quality of the discs. broken flowers was in excellent condition, and the E.T. discs were pristine. looked like they would've been right out of a sealed dvd. there were no scratches AT ALL. and you're right, just changing the dvd case makes it "feel" brand-new.
i think partially my hesitation to go with dvds comes from the way i've seen friends/family members treat their dvds, where packaging's torn up and discs are scratched. and some of the dvds from my blockbuster queue arrive the same way. so it was a nice surprise to see these in such good quality. box sets might be a different story though, because i'm prettty anal about having a nice, crisp, non-bent box.
the missing inserts is probably the only downside, but then dvd inserts are pretty rare now anyways, and they're usually not booklets, just one-page with a chapter list and an advertisement on the other, so it's not a huge loss.
Would you guys shut up about broken flowers (I couldn't find one cheap

)? Just kidding.
I like used DVD's since I can find good deals on them. I guess maybe thanks to the new format war? Also the PS3 can upscale the images for me so they look very nice on my TV.
I hate torn packaging too, but as long as the front is alright then I'm good to go. And usually the disc you can worked on. I know Movie Trading Co. has a GREAT scratch... "smoother(?)" machine I go and use. Takes a few minutes but it looks amazing and plays well afterwards. Also on cases, I know people who buy those thin ones and print off their own covers. Might be something you look into.
I don't think there is much resell value with DVD's so if you find them cheap and realitively good shape I say go for it.
