Hey all.

Just purchased a new Home Theater System, very satisfied with it at the moment. Games and moves sound incredible thus far.

My television, though, I do not have an HD cable box, I get the network channels in HD through the QAM tuner on my television, though.

I have my TV connected to the receiver with an optical cable, and I'm scrolling through what HD channels I have, and they are all in 2.1, although my reciever indicates that it is in Dolby mode, and not just Stereo, as it is with non-HD channels.

So, can you not receive 5.1 audio unless you have an HD cable box, or is there something I am missing?

Any help is appreciated. I would like to be able to watch LOST and a few other network shows in 5.1, if at all possible. If not, though.. that is fine. The 2.1 I am receiving now is a massive step up from the TV audio that I was used to.

I get 5.1 with my antenna just fine. Not all programs are in 5.1, but the majority of the big ones are. Maybe you need to mess around with your tv output settings?

Well, I think the TV settings are fine.

On FOX and CBS right now when I use 'display' on my receiver, it is receiving a 3.2/1 signal, which of course is 5.1, whereas other stations are only 2/0

I guess I just need to work with the manual a bit more, figure out what I need to do to get 5.1 out of these stations.

I did a little fiddling and I can 'force' 5.1 with the 2.0 audio signal, but of course it's not true 5.1..

Hmm.

If the show is broadcasted in 5.1 then it'll go to your reciever in 5.1 as long as its setup correctly. Otherwise anything 2.0 you should be able to set your reciever to one of the Dolby Pro-Logic II/DTS Neo modes which will simulate a 5.1 experience.

Yeah, I got some of them to work, mainly the.. big series shows.

The stuff like 'Super Nanny' and '20/20' was telling my receiver that it was a 5.1 signal, but it was giving me 2.1 audio, so I'm not sure what's up with that, but I seriously doubt shows like Super Nanny and 20/20 are actually in 5.1, so I don't think my receiver is at fault for that one.

Anyway, it seems like it's working fine. Just need to fiddle with the settings and become more familiar with the system. :)

Some shows will say 5.1 but really be in 2.0. Can you honestly expect the Simpsons to utilize 5.1 for example? I wouldn't worry about it. It's most likely on the studios end.

New episodes aired on Fox Sunday night actually are in 5.1 if I recall correctly. I know "Family Guy" is since I've heard a number of discrete uses of panning and audio placement during episodes.

If you ever watch Super Nanny in 5.1 let us know if that actually stops the show from sucking like JJ.
