THE GIST:
87 TRU's are closing
Current sale at (will drop to bigger discounts):

10-30% off all consoles
20-50% off all games
20-50% off all guides
40-50% off all accessories

*All discount amounts YMMV. Check the list below for a possible update on where each store is at.
*All items bought cannot be returned or exchanged anywhere (the barcodes will be crossed out with a marker).
*Further discounts should happen every 1, 2 weeks. It seemed at first it would be a YMMV on when, but it seems all stores are dropping prices at the same time.
*Stores will probably close sometime around Feb. 27th, give or take a couple weeks. Really just depends on how much merch is still moving when that time comes.

Thanks to everyone who helped with the store/sale list!

1/7 3AM EDIT: I am going to my TRU tomorrow to shop, as I bet many of the rest of you will too. Post what deals and stores you find and hopefully we can compile something worthwhile here. ^_^

1/7 1PM EDIT: Trying to compile what stores we have confirmed are closing; also adding what seems to be the current sale. Since each store is bought by local liqudators, your discounts may be different and drop slower/faster, so YMMV on the discounts, for better or for worse.

1/8 11PM EDIT: Looks like we are looking at about two weeks for the next drop, which should be to 20% - 40%. The time of the drop and the amount is up to each liqudator, so YMMV when it comes to it. But two weeks should be about right for all the stores. Store list updated, along with return policy. Forgot to ask about exchanges though, doh. >_<

1/11 2:30PM EDIT: Changed closed store total from 72 to 87, 12 of which are being turned into Babys R Us. Closing store list also updated.

1/13 3:30AM EDIT: Updated the closed store list. Added a note below about "fixture" sale information (which probably varies per store on how they go about selling the stuff off).

1/13 11:45PM EDIT: Updated the closed store list. Added news on possible console discounts.

1/16 3PM EDIT: Looks like Reality's Fringe was right on a nation-wide clearance increase, so thanks to him for the head's up!

1/16 11PM EDIT: Complete closing store list added!

2/9 7:30PM EDIT: Updated %s

I walked into work today for my paycheck and to price adjust some games, and one of the managers took me aside, gave me some paperwork and told me our TRU (Bellingham, WA) along with 72 others are being closed, effective tomorrow. Well, at least my store tomorrow, but I assume everyone else is in the same boat. The earliest they will actually close their doors is Feburary 27th, so there will be plenty of time to take advantage of the sale.

According to the manager, everything will be clearanced for the closing sale starting tomorrow, and only a few things will not be part of that, being video game hardware. I asked about games and she said she didn't know. I don't know exactly what the clearance is going to start at, but I would say 30% (what the GT sale usually starts at) would be a good guess.

If you bought anything from a closing TRU before today and you want to return, exchange, price adjust, whatever, you can still do so. But: everything bought from here on out CANNOT be returned. If they are like my store, they take a big black marker and cross out the UPC. They do this so you cannot return it to another TRU. I didn't get the whole speech, so exchanges may be okay, but no more returns, no more price adjustments.

Also: all TRU coupons, sales, price drops, whatever are no longer valid at the closing stores, since they are not really TRUs anymore.

If not already, you should be seeing soon some sort of poster, fill-out form, whatever in your TRU about selling the fixtures, etc. This includes video game display posters, standees, the playable game set-ups, etc. At my store, it was a cardboard kisok thing with a form you filled out with your contact info and what you want, and they'll contact you with a price. Don't know what things will go for, but you may or may not be able to score some cool stuff.
Are any in Alabama closing? I googled a search, and didn't come up with a list of the stores. I'm willing to bet mine (Montgomery) is one of them
Probably not the one in Montgomery - there isn't another one very close by (an hour away) - although they could really use an overhaul in that store - it looks pretty crappy!
Then they should get me more interested than 30% off if I can't bring it back.
Think of it this way...they buy the inventories for pennies on the dollar, they want the most moeny from what sells. That's why it normally stays "30-50 % OFF!" 30 being almost everything and 50 being the stuff thats either overstocked or already sold at a higher price point (Jewlery thats almost always %50 or so at places like Mervyns or Kmart). When it gets to that %70 off stage, thats normally when they are just trying to get the place cleaned out so they can move on.

I think I'll make a run by both stores while I'm out today, just in case, and know I made the effort.

Plenty of people around here to pick up anything on sale.

From another board (TFW2005.com):

"Kind of a mixed blessing since when I left the company the list was at 207+ stores, but yesterday 73 stores had meetings where they were told there stores will be closing as of March 8th. Liquidation signs went up at those stores today. I only know a few specific stores as no one I know has access to the full list (Maybe Junior can access it?) But confirmed closings (where I knew people or where I've seen people from those stores post about it) are:

Phoenix AZ
Fairfield CA
Emeryville CA
Valejo CA
Mira Mesa CA
Woodbury MN
Duluth MN"

I'm pissed. Vallejo and Fairfield are my prime TRUs. Don't ask which one that is in Phoenix. My guess would be the one on Camelback or at Metro. Hopefully Camelback, that one scares me. Oh, well. At least I'll be able to snag some good deals before they disappear. Now I'll have to drive all the way to San Rafael or Santa Rosa for any good TRU deals. Which probably won't happen since that's too far to drive unless the deal is REALLY good. Man, I drive by that Vallejo TRU everyday on my way to and from work. It was so convenient. So easy....literally 5 minutes from my job (a big hole in the ground, you've seen it).

I can't believe they're all closing on my birthday. I know someone in power did this to mess with my mind :(
To be honest the only 2 I know of around here are the springfield and Holyoke ones. I agree the springfield one does suck, and the main reason I go to the Holyoke one is because it is like 5 mins away from school (HCC).
Yeah the mall is like right across the high way from HCC. I was gonig to go to HCC, but changed my mind, I go to STCC and haven't been shoot...yet! :)

Honestly, there are 2 TRU within all of Western MA, yet other places have like 40 within 5 minutes of each other. Close some of those. Plus why does Babies are us have to be so huge? I mean really, buy another lot of just split the one they have in half.

The Holyoke one is closing and I know most the new staff, the old staff is gone. Irwin will be gone to and Tamkia is at Springfield which won't be closing.
I am really suprised that the one in Raleigh is going to close considering it is in such a sweet spot near a high traffic mall.
i have NEVER got any good green tag deals from that TRU...or any kind of deals for that matter...have you?

yea, it's in a great location...but i never get any good deals from it! :bomb:

Any New hampshire stores closings?

Though I'm still a little pissed with medford. I didn't go there very often (enough to count, but not a lot), its just that my mom works right near it. She'd often stop in there and pick stuff up when a sale started.

Though any toys r us stores still using the ticket system in MA, NH, CT, ME, VT or RI (ie. new england)? I really want to see one. That was a sad day when they stopped doing that.
I am really suprised that the one in Raleigh is going to close considering it is in such a sweet spot near a high traffic mall.
I'm really surprised by this too. I thought it would be the one in Durham, if any were going to close in the Triangle.

I just called and *neither* of the Grand Rapids MI stores are closing.

Frankly, I think the employees just have not been informed yet, because these two stores are virtually next-door to each other, and it doesn't make much sense to have two stores serving the same area.

This has been a long time coming. In fact, it should not be a surprise. Some of my good friends from Law School work for *******(risk of non-disclosure), which is a consulting conglomerate....and they helped with the takeover of TRU. Anyhow, it seems as if Wal-mart and Target are the preferred Toy buying stores, as is fairly clearly evident by the decrepit apperances of many TRUs. Anyhow, the primary reason for taking over TRU and TRU's value stems from its ideal B&M properties. TRU was intelligent enough to outright purchase their buildings and land, and in the majority of cases, they bought ideal commercial property at the footsteps of a shopping mall or a heavily trafficked commercial area. The stores will be shut down, and the land will be sold for commercial reasons....which unfortunately holds more value than TRU's daily business.

I wish the Springfield one would close, they suck, plus there is a Walmart down the street, which sucks even more.

The Holyoke Mall one is the only one to get real toys. That Target there is a shit one with hardly anything.

I'm so pissed.

Effectively, they are pulling a K-Mart in order to not go completely bankrupt.

Checked with the Phoenix TRU, they said they're not having a clearance sale yet. Not sure when it'll happen either.

ADD - Camelback is the only store in AZ that's closing according to some of the info I got from the other stores, including Metro.

Hope all goes well for those losing their jobs.

Reminds me when TRU first came to Columbia, SC. There was a Lionel Playworld just around the corner. LP ended up closing very shortly after that. Competition is a bitch. Sucks that I would have to travel further to go to TRU now.

Though we did score a Colecovision and 10 games for $100 when LP was closing out. So long ago. Damn I feel old.
You guys think Mario Strikers will be on sale?
If video games are 10% off, then ALL video games will be 10% off.

For all the bay area CAG's I just came from the emeryville Ca store, (which is closing) and talked with one of the managers. H says that the TUR stores in San francisco and Daily City
are closing. Also all accessories are 30% off. I picked up :

Memory Expansion pak 1.98
Star Wars Sith/Jedi Controllers: 2.99

Plus the 30%
Total $3.43
Games are only 10% I'll wait for now.

I read in another thread that someone had 2 local toys r us's close earlier this year. They said the games dropped to 30% off and stayed that way until the store closed. Not sure if it will be the same, though disappointing if it is.

The Camelback store is the only 'old school' style store in town anyway. The other half dozen are at least contemporary (non-ticket) style.

I checked with the 2 in Scottsdale and 2 in Mesa just now, and the only one who even knew about any closings was the one at Superstition Springs. Maybe they're next?

You wouldn't happen to have found out if the one in Newark is closing, did you?

I can confirm that the Bannister/Hillcrest store in KC, MO is closing.

Rumor has it that the TRU on Barry Road up by Metro North is closing too, but I can't confirm that this weekend.
Or anywhere in Ohio for that matter? Like say around Akron?
Springfield OH store is closing and I'm pissed. It was my little treasure trove when it came to deals. Not to mention they have this bitchin' mario statue that's like 4 or so feet tall, but some employee already has dibs on it. Goodbye TRU, I'll miss you

For anyone concerned or if it hasn't been in the topic:

Games are 10% off lowest price
Game Accessories are 30% off lowest price
Guides are 20% off lowest price.

I'm going to wait till they hit 30%-70% and go nuts. One last hurrah!
Honestly I think ToysRUs' real downfall was due to the fact that corporate had no idea how to run the company properly. Before the corporation was sold the decisions that were made for TRU were horrendous. You should have seen some of the retarded things that employees had to deal with. Also the management at the store level was really really bad for the most part. This comes from personal experience.

But Walmart definitely is a business killer
I have no doubt that the "executives" cut loose when the co. was sold were rewarded handsomely for their incompetence. The upper reaches of corporate America is one of the few places where incompetence is not only tolerated, but can also make you very wealthy. TRU has needed an enema for years, and they need to wake up to the realities of the marketplace. Partnering with Amazon was a fairly good move, given their disastrous effort when first trying to go .com; but instead of making the most of the Amazon partnership, they basically just use them as a fulfillment house. Lame.

I say a half-dozen average CAGs could do a better job of running that company than what they have now. I can't tell you how many "business consultants" I've run into whose solution to every problem is to close stores and fire (good) workers, keeping the same shitty management and practices in place that screwed the company in the first place.

One closed around me last year, I can tell you great deals to be had. They started with clerance at 20% then two weeks later 30% then 40% and about 3 weeks before they closed 50% off. They had all games and accessories at those rates. Everything in the store was 20-50% off, the only thing that was not was video games consoles and what few tv's they have. I didn't get much from my store closing. However lots of great deals.
Hello help1
I called Levittown
Nasty looking store, but sad to see it go as it was the closest one to me and I worked there for five years from late '97 to mid '03
yeah, levittown sorta makes me sad (thats where i went as a kid). Now days i only stopped there after a looking at frys or gamestop (used to be funcoland!) or the movie thearter... BTW, dont go to the haircutters next to there, they suck

The one here in Victoria, TX is closing as well. Nothing stood out to me, I got pretty much what I wanted during the recent clearance. Still very sad to see.

Albany, OR store is closing.

We had a year long fight to remove an evil Director and get them fired (that we finally got to happen in October) and they repay us by closing the store. Lame....

Thanks for everyone for the help on what stores have been closing. I will update the list accordingly when I get a chance or a mod can do it (they do that, right?).

Is it safe to say that we are currently at 10% off all games, 30% off all accessories at the moment?
Which one is that?
Honestly, I can't remember which one. I know my store manager said it's actually a fairly high-traffic store too. All I know is it's being converted and management is getting the axe.

EDIT: Looking at the store locator list, I want to say Bethel Park, but I'm still not 100%... I'll try to confirm later.
