THE GIST:
87 TRU's are closing
Current sale at (will drop to bigger discounts):

10-30% off all consoles
20-50% off all games
20-50% off all guides
40-50% off all accessories

*All discount amounts YMMV. Check the list below for a possible update on where each store is at.
*All items bought cannot be returned or exchanged anywhere (the barcodes will be crossed out with a marker).
*Further discounts should happen every 1, 2 weeks. It seemed at first it would be a YMMV on when, but it seems all stores are dropping prices at the same time.
*Stores will probably close sometime around Feb. 27th, give or take a couple weeks. Really just depends on how much merch is still moving when that time comes.

Thanks to everyone who helped with the store/sale list!

1/7 3AM EDIT: I am going to my TRU tomorrow to shop, as I bet many of the rest of you will too. Post what deals and stores you find and hopefully we can compile something worthwhile here. ^_^

1/7 1PM EDIT: Trying to compile what stores we have confirmed are closing; also adding what seems to be the current sale. Since each store is bought by local liqudators, your discounts may be different and drop slower/faster, so YMMV on the discounts, for better or for worse.

1/8 11PM EDIT: Looks like we are looking at about two weeks for the next drop, which should be to 20% - 40%. The time of the drop and the amount is up to each liqudator, so YMMV when it comes to it. But two weeks should be about right for all the stores. Store list updated, along with return policy. Forgot to ask about exchanges though, doh. >_<

1/11 2:30PM EDIT: Changed closed store total from 72 to 87, 12 of which are being turned into Babys R Us. Closing store list also updated.

1/13 3:30AM EDIT: Updated the closed store list. Added a note below about "fixture" sale information (which probably varies per store on how they go about selling the stuff off).

1/13 11:45PM EDIT: Updated the closed store list. Added news on possible console discounts.

1/16 3PM EDIT: Looks like Reality's Fringe was right on a nation-wide clearance increase, so thanks to him for the head's up!

1/16 11PM EDIT: Complete closing store list added!

2/9 7:30PM EDIT: Updated %s

I walked into work today for my paycheck and to price adjust some games, and one of the managers took me aside, gave me some paperwork and told me our TRU (Bellingham, WA) along with 72 others are being closed, effective tomorrow. Well, at least my store tomorrow, but I assume everyone else is in the same boat. The earliest they will actually close their doors is Feburary 27th, so there will be plenty of time to take advantage of the sale.

According to the manager, everything will be clearanced for the closing sale starting tomorrow, and only a few things will not be part of that, being video game hardware. I asked about games and she said she didn't know. I don't know exactly what the clearance is going to start at, but I would say 30% (what the GT sale usually starts at) would be a good guess.

If you bought anything from a closing TRU before today and you want to return, exchange, price adjust, whatever, you can still do so. But: everything bought from here on out CANNOT be returned. If they are like my store, they take a big black marker and cross out the UPC. They do this so you cannot return it to another TRU. I didn't get the whole speech, so exchanges may be okay, but no more returns, no more price adjustments.

Also: all TRU coupons, sales, price drops, whatever are no longer valid at the closing stores, since they are not really TRUs anymore.

If not already, you should be seeing soon some sort of poster, fill-out form, whatever in your TRU about selling the fixtures, etc. This includes video game display posters, standees, the playable game set-ups, etc. At my store, it was a cardboard kisok thing with a form you filled out with your contact info and what you want, and they'll contact you with a price. Don't know what things will go for, but you may or may not be able to score some cool stuff.
well I just checked my Toys R Us in Tennessee. The TRU by Hickory Hollow Mall is closing down and is doing 10% off everything including videogames, which also sucks that its happening, because I went there today to buy Geist for 9.98 to take to Walmart to get 40 bux profit on, they had 7 copies, and I was going to buy them all for a huge profit, but guess what, with the store closing they have to use a magic marker and open the sealing on the game and blackout the entire UPC code incase people try to return them to another Toys R Us, needless to say I was pissed, but I also found another TRU closing
That sounds mildly illegal, and by that i mean they cant open the game. I dont much give a shit if you screw over wally world.
That sounds mildly illegal, and by that i mean they cant open the game. I dont much give a shit if you screw over wally world.
lol...that was funny. I honestly wasn't expecting to read that. i really thought you were gonna go off on him for attempting to buy 10 copies of the same game and return them all to Walfart

My girlfriend just called me and informed me that the Sarasota Florida TRU is closing. No word on the 6 in the Tampa/St. Pete area yet.
at least locally the deciding factor was babies r us.
the best store in san diego is closing because the crappy 2 stores have babies r us's close but there isnt one in the area of the good store, thus they close it and make it into a babies r us.

garbage.
I'm just guessing here, but maybe it's also cause of location.

the other 5 stores i know of in greater san diego (vista, escondido, bay park, La mesa and chula vista) are ALL highly visible from a major freeway, the Mira Mesa store being smack dab in the middle of Mira Mesa right next to a competing department store (we could say "stores," if you include the gamestop and the ebgames within walking distance). hell, vista is probably the smallest, and easily not the best kept store, but it looks like it didn't make it onto that list (though that list looks only partial) probably because of the location.

Mira Mesa to me makes the most sense, even though it is probably one of the cleaner ones. I'd guess that Vista would close too, just cause of it's proximity to the mall, and just cause the layout of the store sucks.
That sounds mildly illegal, and by that i mean they cant open the game. I dont much give a shit if you screw over wally world.
it is illegal, unless you give them permission to do so. they can tell you "well, we won't sell it to you unless we opn it for you" but you can always just buy it, and then say "no."

it's your property, and you have the choice of not buying it if it's opened. but perhaps the reason they're marking it off in the books is that it's "opened merchandise" so they have to open it for you before they even ring it up with the discount.

Good for your ass !!! At least some other gamers can get their hands on a game they want to play and not just make a profit on... Greedy Bastard !!!
Did the stores that are going to close have some post-it like forms stuck onto the shelves? Does that have anything to do with..., well, anything? Because I notice couple Toys "R" Us that I went to these couple days have them... :whistle2:| Dang, I do not want to drive 30 minutes for a Toys "R" Us... :whistle2:( :nottalking: :headache:
thats for invintory purposes

i work at the woburn ma store and if uve been in there recently it looks like the stores about to go outa buisness. nothing in the overstock. the bays are completly empty. we havent recieved a truck in a week.

I just returned from Mass and had gone to the Dorchester store. It's a shame it is closing. It was one of the nicer TRU's I have been to. I guess I will not be able to go back there next time I visit my friend. :(

Another South Carolina closing... the West Ashley (Charleston area) store on Sam Rittenberg is closing. I went by there today and saw the sign and just had to go in... absolute madness. Sad, sad madness. I've scored so many great deals there in the past couple of years. :(

DAMN IT ALL TO HELL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My Albany Oregon TRU is closing, thats the only place i ever get any decent deals thats within 50 miles.
This sucks a lot.
The one in Parsippany, NJ also has the 10% to 30% sale, all sales are final. It is definitely closing.
Confirmed. They wouldn't have hired the guy with the sign that says 'TRU closing' to stand on the corner otherwise.

Ah Mira Mesa San Diego will become a Babies R Us, that sucks as the staff at my local toysrus are really nice Im always shopping there for diapers and games.

It will be a shame to see such a good store go.

According to the staff the liquidators now own the store not toysrus so all sales are final...i.e. be careful what you buy you may not be able to return it. Also many green tagged prices are now the real price, so in some cases this means actual price increases. Good thing I got some good deals before the XXXX hit the fan!

But sadly they have confirmed that the store will be shut in the next 2 months :whistle2:(

GoodBye toysrus :whistle2:(

Now if only they would have shut down BestBuy I would be happy I never get a deal there, I had to hard sell them to match their web price of $18.99 when the store price was $19.99, the price match took 15 mins to ring up!

Oh and by the way if anyone wanted the $10 games there I saw some guy buy 20 of the 40 or so PS2 and Xbox games that were left in the bargain bin, so you'll probably have to wait until they discount all games there to get a good deal now.

There were still some gameboy games left

Anybody know if the one in Tustin, California is closing?

I would really like to pick up some XBOX 360 wireless controllers for $35.
The one in Macon, GA is closing and Im pissed! This is my fav spot for my kids christmas shopping! 478-781-7444.
Just to let you know, the one in Warner Robins is apparently not closing. Of course getting there is such a pain in the ass that it may not be worth the trip.

They are supposed to put the black mark over the plastic or on the packaging, not open up all items and put a black mark on them. Thats what i was told by my closing TRU.

Yes, the black mark will remove eaisly with goo gone or rubbing alcohol for collecting purposes.

aww, giving the hoarders ideas lol...now they'll take advantage of your advice lol

Does anybody have a cash-paid receipt for "shogun empire"? I need one to return this game, which I bought from Toysrus in Colma, CA (which is also closing). Any receipt from Gamestop, Ebgames. gamecrazy is fine.
Haha, I forgot there was one at Northgate... which is probably a bad sign. I live in Lake City and always go to the Alderwood TRU. Not because I like it or anything, but just because for the past year I completely forgot they had a TRU at Northgate.

Horrible location, the only people that see it are either going to Red Robin or got lost circling the mall.
You know what, go figure this too, but the Northgate store is the jewel of WA. No shit. I was talking to one of the managers at my work, telling him I thought that store would be getting the axe, and he said no way flat out. He said that is the training store and that shit is "perfect" there.

So, I guess it's good for something. ^_^

I am working on updating the store list right now. It appears that the next discount increase should be about two weeks away, give or take. The drops are up to whichever liquidator is in charge, so YMMV on the time and the amount. But, two weeks is about right.

Also, as in the all sales are final vein, all items bought will be marked with a black marker over the UPC. Someone said Goo Gone will take it right off, so no biggie for the collectors.

I don't know about exchanges, so if someone could help me out on that, that would be awesome since I don't work again until Friday. ^_^

the liquidation discount takes elminates the 70% green tag discount. It's such a ripoff atm.

really glad to hear today that our store was not closing, well cause then I'd be out of a job. I was surprised to see a lot of stores in our region were closing, and as I hear being changed into Babies R Us'.

went to Emeryville, CA to check out the sale there with one of my friends. all of their good $10 stuff they had before was all picked clean (Warioware Inc GBA, Fatal Frame 2, etc etc.), not much left. it was an ok sale on games, better with accessories. I was hoping to get a gig card for my PSP or a wireless 360 controller, but they didn't have either :(

i know that the TRU on the east side of madison, wi is closing. they still had Dark Cloud 2 for 9.99. i also heard the west side was closing, but no confirmation on that.

Hi, does anyone have opinions about the availibility of displays and other promo gamer goodies that are typically not for sale? Toys R Us usually has killer displays to advertise the games and those would make great decorations for our game rooms.

How about the current 3 gems of collecting that are in the stores? The GC/Xbox/PS2 standing demo set ups? Or in some places the GBSP and GBDS set ups as well? (I really expect Nintendo to take these back though). I'd so love to have one of these things, but I've seen them sell for fairly cheap prices on ebay, and it seems far cheaper to get one though an ebay dealer than a liquidation sale....

You see, my experience in the past 20 years of watching all sorts of stores around me close is that they usually have some special liquadaor company come in to sell off the fixtures. Sadly these jerks are pros at getting the very last drop out of their fixtures and they price everything at outragously high prices. My only experience with a game display via a closing store was about 5 years ago or so with the Montgomery Wards closing and their Dreamcast display. I had my eye on it for a couple weeks and then the bastard liquidation company robbed the TV and system out of the display, sold them off, and put the stand aside for their special 2 day fixtures auction. I simply did not want to wait around for whenever hours over 2 wintery days to get a half complete set up, which probably would have had a $500 starting bid on it or some crazy madness. *sigh*

On a related side note, last month I found the Xbox display in the Circuit City dumpster (this should tell you what these things are really worth), but it was devoid of the system, joypads, and TV (like duh, who would think those would be there in the dumpster as well?). It was way too heavy for me to swipe and I really don't like the Xbox all too well. But now I'm on a MAJOR craving to own an offical COMPLETE display set up of some sort, be it an old or newer system set up. LOL The petit PS2 set up at the TrU would be perfect for me, but I just know it'll end up being the Dreamcast situation all over again.

Ah, come on, Salem isn't that far. I went to that Albany store once and it has an Rzone the size of a closet. I'm not surprised that one's going down :D. But I imagine it probably was a good source of clearance games, so I feel for ya.

Now the Tyson's Corner, VA store closing is a big blow to me - I got some good deals there during the Buy 2 Get 1 GT glitch, as well as some straightup hard to find green tag items. But I only get out there once every 2 months or so.

I'm kind of surprised they aren't closing one of either the Gaithersburg or Rockville stores in MD though. I'd hate to see those go as well, but they seem close to each other and both are disorganized as hell.

I'd say they will be available, but who knows what the price will be and/or if they have not been already claimed. I ran up against this asking about it at work yesterday. You may get lucky, you may not, but it nevers hurts to ask your TRU and get your name on something. ^_^

I drove by the West side one yesterday on my way to cub, no signs outside or anything...

Maybe I'll drive over today and go in.

Is it worth a trip over to the East side or not? Hmmm...

Damn, going to my TRU in Mira Mesa first thing in the morning once they open in like...5 hours. I'm hoping to get some Xbox 360 accessories and Xbox Live, I have to subscribe to more months in like 11 days, shit.

That store was a HUGE part of my childhood, it's a hard thing to see the place go. I remember when my dad bought me THPS for PSX when it came out at the same exact TRU. I played the HELL out of that game.

The Niagara Falls, NY store has not been added to the list yet, sorry if i am bothering with the second post about this but i did confirm it was closing by going there.

Sad to see you go Parsippany, NJ TRU. I got some really good deals there. Kind of strapped for cash right now but maybe I'll head over next week. That's such a shame as that was the one closest to my house.

We had two in Lansing and early 2005 the Toys R US did this same deal...

I kind of held out for as long as I could and just as games hit 40% off or more they started going quick. I am pretty sure a reseller probably picked up a lot at that price.. I was there at noon and back at 6 to pick a few up and most games were gone...

Now its a Babies R US...

Most fun ever...

About 15 years ago, Lionel's Playworld (another toy chain...similiar to Toys R Us) went out of business.

In the end game, they had a deal where you could come in and fill up a shopping cart for $10.....I went down and loaded up a bunch of Atari 2600/5200/7800 games, including what turned out to be pretty rare ones (one game...can't remember the name...was some sort of 7800 Tank game from some oddball company...I got about 10 copies in my basket, and sold them over the years for $100 or so each).

For years after that, I would stumble across games in pawn shops/thrift stores that came form this sale (where other people did what I did apparently).

Ahh...good times.....

i was some what pissed off that my toys r us was closing. i work in the fairfield, ca toys r us. i was like, i did all that hard work just to lose my job in two months.

Anyone know if all Cincinnati stores are closing? We have 5 stores here and they wouldn't answer me when I called and asked. The stores are in Kenwood, Tri-county, Eastgate, Northgate, and the West Side.

I remember Lionel's, I think the one in my home town actually turned into a Toys R Us when they went out of business. Wish I would've know about that fill a shopping cart for $10 deal, that was sweet!

Any word of Canadian TRUs closing? The one up in the Quebec City (Place Laurier - technically Sainte Foy) is ATROCIOUS. It is somewhat of an "Anchor" there but the inside reminds me of old TG&Y stores (very unclean and cluttered). I would rather them revamp the store over close it, of course :)
Hmm...which Indianapolis store is closing? There are 4 in Indy. 38th street?
That's what another CAG is reporting.

I'm headed in that area in an hour or so, I'll post what I find. It's not surprising, though, should this TRU be closing. That area's not doing too well at the moment. The CC down the road closed down and the mall a block down doesn't seem to be doing too well compared to other areas.

There are 4? I can only think of 3.
Castleton
West 38th Street
