THE GIST:
87 TRU's are closing
Current sale at (will drop to bigger discounts):

10-30% off all consoles
20-50% off all games
20-50% off all guides
40-50% off all accessories

*All discount amounts YMMV. Check the list below for a possible update on where each store is at.
*All items bought cannot be returned or exchanged anywhere (the barcodes will be crossed out with a marker).
*Further discounts should happen every 1, 2 weeks. It seemed at first it would be a YMMV on when, but it seems all stores are dropping prices at the same time.
*Stores will probably close sometime around Feb. 27th, give or take a couple weeks. Really just depends on how much merch is still moving when that time comes.

Thanks to everyone who helped with the store/sale list!

***

1/7 3AM EDIT: I am going to my TRU tomorrow to shop, as I bet many of the rest of you will too. Post what deals and stores you find and hopefully we can compile something worthwhile here. ^_^

1/7 1PM EDIT: Trying to compile what stores we have confirmed are closing; also adding what seems to be the current sale. Since each store is bought by local liqudators, your discounts may be different and drop slower/faster, so YMMV on the discounts, for better or for worse.

1/8 11PM EDIT: Looks like we are looking at about two weeks for the next drop, which should be to 20% - 40%. The time of the drop and the amount is up to each liqudator, so YMMV when it comes to it. But two weeks should be about right for all the stores. Store list updated, along with return policy. Forgot to ask about exchanges though, doh. >_<

1/11 2:30PM EDIT: Changed closed store total from 72 to 87, 12 of which are being turned into Babys R Us. Closing store list also updated.

1/13 3:30AM EDIT: Updated the closed store list. Added a note below about "fixture" sale information (which probably varies per store on how they go about selling the stuff off).

1/13 11:45PM EDIT: Updated the closed store list. Added news on possible console discounts.

1/16 3PM EDIT: Looks like Reality's Fringe was right on a nation-wide clearance increase, so thanks to him for the head's up!

1/16 11PM EDIT: Complete closing store list added!

2/9 7:30PM EDIT: Updated %s

I walked into work today for my paycheck and to price adjust some games, and one of the managers took me aside, gave me some paperwork and told me our TRU (Bellingham, WA) along with 72 others are being closed, effective tomorrow. Well, at least my store tomorrow, but I assume everyone else is in the same boat. The earliest they will actually close their doors is Feburary 27th, so there will be plenty of time to take advantage of the sale.

According to the manager, everything will be clearanced for the closing sale starting tomorrow, and only a few things will not be part of that, being video game hardware. I asked about games and she said she didn't know. I don't know exactly what the clearance is going to start at, but I would say 30% (what the GT sale usually starts at) would be a good guess.

If you bought anything from a closing TRU before today and you want to return, exchange, price adjust, whatever, you can still do so. But: everything bought from here on out CANNOT be returned. If they are like my store, they take a big black marker and cross out the UPC. They do this so you cannot return it to another TRU. I didn't get the whole speech, so exchanges may be okay, but no more returns, no more price adjustments.

Also: all TRU coupons, sales, price drops, whatever are no longer valid at the closing stores, since they are not really TRUs anymore.

If not already, you should be seeing soon some sort of poster, fill-out form, whatever in your TRU about selling the fixtures, etc. This includes video game display posters, standees, the playable game set-ups, etc. At my store, it was a cardboard kisok thing with a form you filled out with your contact info and what you want, and they'll contact you with a price. Don't know what things will go for, but you may or may not be able to score some cool stuff.
I'm surprised to see no SoCal TRU closing reported so far.
Mira Mesa TRU being changed into Babies R' Us
I just called the store to answer my own question ;)

They can't accept returns anymore, even for items bought before the closing announcement. However, they do accept exchange if the item was purchased within the 30 days and with receipt. The exchange has to be for the same or higher value item since they are not allowed to give any money back.

Also, they don't do price adjustment no more, even for items bought last week.
Are they legally allowed to do this? I mean, the items were bought under specific terms. They can't just break those terms, can they?

Also, is it confirmed that all the $10 games are now $9? (after the 10% discount).

I'm not about to argue with them since (1) they will be losing their job soon, (2) I only have 2-3 games that I may return, and if I decide to return them, I'll just go to another non-closing store and return them there (hopefully they won't give me grief since I bought them before the store closure announcement).

I'm waiting for more discount in a week or two and do my exchanges in that store for left-over games that I want. As I mentioned early, they can still do exchanges (the original prices that I paid initially, for some other liquidated games).

Games that were $9.98 do have an extra 10% off.

Went to the Phoenix store today... it was a ghost town. Dirty, vacant, and many ugly people.

It's strange that San Francisco doesn't even have any big chain stores anymore. K-mart, Montgomary Ward, Good Guys closed down in Serramonte and now Toys R Us. We never have Walmart to speak of so the only one that's left is Target and Best Buy. That's just sad.

Since the liquidators have purchased the remaining inventory, the items bought before do not belong to them. But I can't see how you would have any problem returning them at another TRU, since they were not bought from the liquidators.

I was reading the LA Times Business section at my night job and it said, "Toys R Us Inc. said Monday that it would shutter 87 locations in the coming months as part of its reorganization after being taken private last year, but will spare 12 of them by converting the locations into Babies R Us stores."

I also found a link to the article online HERE.
A couple posts back, I just picked up an XBOX 360 controller for $15 off = 30% off. So it's not true at the Vallejo TRU.
did it ring up as 30% off. I ask my cousin to grab one for me. she went today and she said its just 10%.

I assume she read the sign or so. but I'll ask her again.

I am sure it won't be a problem, but when your TRUs' up the discount, post here or send me a PM so I can update the list with the discount amount. Thanks! ^_^
Must..... take .... higher.... percentage.... off.... games..... uh... ugh...

is TRU still hiring?
Maybe a store that's not closing, but if you just want a discount on the closing stores games, you won't get one by getting a job at any TRU. Our employee discounts are no longer good at closing stores. =P

Only seem to be a few CAGs from Mississippi here, but the TRU in west Jackson, MS is also closing (on Highway 80 across from Metrocenter, if you're familiar with the area). The TRU in north Jackson appears to be staying open.

It doesn't explicitly say 30% off but the computer automatically took $15 off the controller for a total before tax of $34.99.

Yesterday (1-10-06) I went back since I decided I wanted a wired controller also in case I ever want to use one with my computer. It rang up $39.99 - $12 = $27.99, which is also 30% off. So, either your cousin is mistaken or your TRU is lame.

Like I said, there was absolutely no signage indicating 30% off the accessories. No signs at all in the R-Zone for that matter. All toys and whatnot are marked but not the game stuff. Just have your cousin buy it and if it doesn't ring up 30% off she can just walk away from the sale. No big deal.

alright thanks. She assumed it would be marked 30% off. I'll get her to pick me up one tomorrow.

aren't xbox live subscriptions considered accessories. though I haven't seen my toysrus down here in san jose carry them. I'll have her look and if it rings up 30% off grab it too.

I'll be keeping an eye out for Woodbury, MN. Any Minnesotans wanna team up and do a network? We can swap turns for recon and picking up games for one another, that way we all don't have to continually walk in every weekend. PM me if interested.

Add to the closing list

Niagara Falls, NY

I work at the Amherst (Buffalo) NY location, we arent closing. In fact we have about 4 Toys R us within 30 mins of each other (kind of big area) and only 1 is actually closing. - the one that doesnt even have an Rzone and no one shops at.

Will probably check it out. I ve got my best game deals while working in the Rzone. PSP games for 9.99, where else have you seen that?
Did you hear about that fugitive that hid out in that old Circuit City and got caught a little over a year ago? (Link) He stole stuff from that TRU (which is connected to the CC) and even robbed it. No wonder it's closing, heh.

(I know there was a thread about it here, but I'm not having any luck finding it)
Oh yeah, I completely forgot about that :)

The guy was living there for a while wasn't he or something?
I was wondering when they group who bought the chain would do the first round of closings. Toys R Us has been run into the ground for years. First the we can't figure out a remodel that works, then kids r us mess, and finally hiring the CEO from FAO Schawtz before they went Chapter 11. The store I worked at went through at least a dozen remodles in the last 15 years.

The biggest mistake the have made is not to keep with the times. Kids want Cell phones, Dvd's, digitial cameras, ipods, and electronics. There electronics section is squeezed into RZone which they never have figured out how to handle.

Wal Mart didn't screw TRU, they did it to themselves. Walmart might have driven prices lower and had a better position to deal with Vendors, but TRU has been screwed since the early 90's.
I absolutely agree with you 100,000 percent. I was an R-Zone World Leader when I worked for TRU about five years ago. It was the single worst company that I have ever worked for in my entire life. There were almost no hours alloted for the proper amount of staff to get work done. I think I had two people working for me in the R-Zone and I'm pretty sure neither of them were full time. They wanted to compete head to head with EB Games, Walmart, and all the other major game retailer but didn't want to give me the staff.

It wasn't just our department, everything was understaffed. We never had cashiers, so I would be running my entire R-Zone by my self, and still have to run a register most of the day because we didn't have anyone else. It was like this all over the company from what I heard from other stores. They wanted to run a big box store, but didn't want to shell out the money to staff it.

We had terrible customer satisfaction because there wasn't anyone to help them, and then the check outs were slow because we had so few people manning them. Nobody who worked there was happy with their job, the pay was crap, the hours sucked, they always were pulling us in for some stupid meetings that just seemed to waste time and serve little true purpose.

It was a horrible, horrible, horrible place to work.

To this day, I almost never even go inside a TRU if I can help it, because it just brings back such bad memories.

The store I was at said if it was bought before the 6th they could take it back but if it was bought after no returns, no exchanges. If it's broken you have to call the manufacturer.
That sucks, I was about to drop by to see if I could pick up a wireless controller or maybe a memory card.
The controllers and memory cards are still 30% off... things like dance mats and the drum sets are only 10% off.

From what I have seen id that TRU is shit because they hire, no offense to you, assholic dumbfucks. All the people I ever see in there are doing shit, playing with the toys. There was either only 3 people working in the whole store, or there were 20 people "working" there, but only three were really doing anythnig.

No, you are dead on about the type of people that are typically hired by TRU. I took the job because I had moved to a new area, and needed something quick. I worked there for about six months, and then quit. It was terrible. Because you offer crap wages, erratic hours, little benefits, and all that jazz, you don't get good people working for you. The few decent people we had were overworked and would get burned out by it. It was poorly managed from all angles, and it was too easy to see through all the higher up corporate BS that came down the pipeline.

I had fond memories of TRU as a kid, but all those were destroyed by that awful time period of my life.

They're closing Merced CA?? That's so damned sad... I'm guessing the economy there has been shot to hell since Castle AFB closed a few years ago. Living in Merced/Atwater growing up is definitely a contrast to living in Alabama

Didn't know the one on Dale Mabry in Tampa was closing... I'm really not surprised though. They just built an EXTREMELY nice shopping center right next to it, and that TRU is very run down. They barely have products on the shelves, the employees are mostly rude, I knew it was coming.

I mean, I know one instance I was looking for Suikoden IV. Go to the TRU here, don't have it, guy checks computer, Dale Mabry has it. He calls, asks them to put it aside, he says it will be there when I get there. Awesome help, I leave pretty happy.

I get there, the girl in R-Zone goes "SUIKO WHAT? I DON' KNO WHATCHOO TALKIN BOUT". We went back and forth through this for about, 5 minutes, until I said "someone JUST CALLED HERE 20 minutes ago, you told him it would be on hold". She tells me she put it at the service desk, I go there, wait in line, it's not there, go back, it took a manager to find the game and the girl says "OH, I FORGOT WHERE I PUT IT"

I only stepped foot in there one more time, during the 2 for 30 select DS games sale. Ask her (it's the same girl, surpringsly) for bust a move DS, she says what's out there is out there, I tell her "maybe it's in the back, it's pretty new", since other CAGS reported their TRU didn't put it out yet.

She tells me "NO GAMES IN THA BAK OKKKKKK"... no sooner does she tell me this, when another employee comes out, turns to an elderly lady, and says "Sorry ma'am, I searched through all the games in the back, we don't have it yet but come back later in the week". I turn to the original cashier and say "So, no games in the back huh?" and just walk away.

TRU has really drove itself into the ground.

^^^I know that lady! She was there almost every time I went there. I'm sorry to see the Dale Mabry TRU close down though. I got more deals from that store than any other. They very rarely changed the shelf prices even during the green tag sale, so a lot of games were still available since a lot of customers and employees didn't know they were marked down.

My sister says that the Brea, CA TRU might also be closing. I can't be sure since I haven't been there yet, but its likey as that place is practically dead.

It's being reported on the local news that the Dewitt, NY (near Syracuse) store is closing. As far as I know, the Clay (also near Syracuse) store is NOT closing.

i bought a psp earlier this week, so i went by my local (closing) tru to pick up some much needed accesories. i got the logitech playgear case (the one that looks like its bulletproof) for $13.99 and a 1gb memory stick pro duo for $69.96. anyone who has priced these 1gb cards knows that $70 in-store is a pretty kick ass deal. thanks, op.

Are you talking about the short Hispanic woman with glasses? She argued with me for several minutes when I asked her to price-check some games on the first day of the clearance last month, insisting that they were NOT on clearance and that I was wasting her time.

Needless to say, she was wrong, and could have saved all of that time by just doing the damn price-check.

One gets the impression that this is the case with all retail chains- has anyone here ever worked for a retail company where this wasn't the case? Eckerd, EB, GameStop...I can't recall a retail job I've worked at as a manager or sales associate that I have a nice thing to say about.
They barely have products on the shelves, the employees are mostly rude, I knew it was coming.
It might just be me, but I don't remember a store on Dale Mabry that couldn't be described in this fashion. The Wal-Mart there was a disaster. Of course, it's been a few years now...

It is pretty common for a lot of retail outlets to treat their employees like crap, but for some it is more true than others. TRU was, in my experience, at the bottom of the barrel when it came to how it treated not only the employees but most of the customers as well. A lot of those stores exist only to make most of their profit around the holidays, so they don't care about the rest of the year. They only focus on the money they rake in over the holiday season, and everything else is almost like it is a hassle for them to deal with.

Shit - I live in a college town; every single retail store is run that way, heh. =P

I am just curious, any idea what will happen to managers of stores that are closing? Are they being laid off too or transferred somewhere else like to a babies r us?

Adding to the Rzone fire - I know my games pretty well but other than me there is ONE other person that knows anything. In fact, our Rzone world leader is a complete idiot. She knows nothing about games, always asks us for info.

However, the hours are decent now that its off season, and there is nothing to do, no one shops after Xmas and we can just play games all day. Its really not taht bad. Closing at 9pm meh. I get great deals on markd down stuff too, Got a DS for 65 bux, controllers for 1 dollar. PSP mem cards accidently marked to 3 bux, bought 10 of em.

Yea, that's her.

Good to see I'm not the only one who has horror stories of that R-Zone employee from hell.
One gets the impression that this is the case with all retail chains- has anyone here ever worked for a retail company where this wasn't the case? Eckerd, EB, GameStop...I can't recall a retail job I've worked at as a manager or sales associate that I have a nice thing to say about.

It might just be me, but I don't remember a store on Dale Mabry that couldn't be described in this fashion. The Wal-Mart there was a disaster. Of course, it's been a few years now...
I've never worked retail, but supposedly Costco has good benefits and treats its employees well. I knew something was up when I'd see the same people working there year-after-year - low turnover, which is a good sign of decent workplace satisfaciton.

That's why I never ask for a "price-check". I just take the stuff to the counter and if I don't like the price it rings up as I just tell them I don't want it.

sadden to hear the TRU closest to me is now closing. One of the nice benefits of my new condo was that its near two TRUs. No its just down to one TRU. At least I discovered a TRU a few metro stops down from where I work we gives me the ability to go shop during my lunch breaks and immediately after work. I guess that should lessen the blow.

I haven't actually gone down to my local TRU yet, as I figured it wouldn't be closing since it also has a Babies R Us section. Though I just happened to glance in the direction of the store today and there was a big closing sign. So I guess you can add the Federal Way, WA TRU to the list as well... A pity, it was a pretty decent place.
