MGS4 is really good.

I might keep the PS3. Just might.

I knew I would keep it when I saw MK2 on the store with online multiplayer...

And I want to play uncharted and Ninja Gaiden Sigma. And Resistance.. that's about it, though. Maybe Warhawk, if I get it cheap.

MGS4 is good, but not perfect. I can't imagine getting through this game with full out stealth. It is one of the best games I've played in a long time, though.

Uncharted is awesome. NGS is okay, I didn't like Resistance, and I hate Warhawk. MGS4 is the best exclusive, followed by Unchated/Ratchet and Clank Future tools of Destruction. IMO of course.

Well I'm curious, have you ever played a perfect game?

I dunno if MGS4 will stay exclusive, but all I knows is this game is fuck ing EPIC.

I finally got through act 1 and I swear, if there wasn't another bout of loading I'd still be playing even farther past my bedtime than I normally would...the game just makes you want to keep going and going...and
the weapons...holy shit...customizable, varied, awesome. I picked up a suppressor and just said fuck it, I'm just going to 86 anyone who gets in my way until the mission tells me otherwise
.

I can't say enough good things about MGS4.
I dunno if MGS4 will stay exclusive, but all I knows is this game is fuck ing EPIC.
Oh it will. Konami said exclusive in more places than ANY other game. It will sell fine anyway. It's not like of those games that badly needs to be multi-platform to make the money back.

Anyway, I'm a little angry that the PSN Card I bought no longer works (got errors yesterday) and no money was added to my wallet, so I gotta call SCEA today. I'm still one of the first to have one, so it's not like I can easily find the problem out.

Nah I'm sure there'll be a directors cut version put out on 360. Nothing I've seen so far seems like it couldn't be done on 360, graphically or storage wise. They'll just have to be smarter with compression and put the online component on another DVD.

I didn't mean it to say any other game is perfect, but the hyperbole people are spouting about the game's quality is absurd. At least in the first act, many areas are easy to get lost in and seem to be lacking the tight structure and design even MGS3's open areas had. The sniper segment early in the game has no real areas to flank the enemy, and two areas right next to each other where enemies continually respawn (way too obvious areas, where I actually saw PMC soldiers popping into existence) seemingly forcing you to rambo through instead of giving you the option for stealth.

The lack of a modern cover system also is frustrating. The silly story elements remain, and Akiba's diahrrea was funny once, and increasingly annoying the 20 times after that. The inventory system is as clunky and unintuitive as mass effect - Going to the menu everytime I need a new weapon not in my 5 presets is not a good choice. Drebin's shop system makes no sense since everytime I pick up a weapon it's just an extra menu choice to get it unlocked.. etc. etc.

I'm still really, really enjoying it, but as with any hyped product, people are glossing over the flaws because of the hype. It's gorgeous and has the best controls the series has had yet, and I've already seen some awesome scenarios that I know I'll want to play again.

I wonder what the budget for MGS4 was. I've got a hard time believing it's going to make a profit any time soon sitting on the PS3 only.

Just because they said it more doesn't make it any more true. You hear lots of people use the word these days and it's rarely true anymore. But I couldn't care less if it stays exclusive or not, I have a a PS3 to play it on and I would gladdy rebuy a directors cut(or whatever they choose it) of the game(Which I'm sure we'll see sometime soon).

What else would you have excepted from a guy named Johnny? The moment I took a look at the artbook and saw the name Johnny (Akiba), I saw diahrrea jokes coming.

I imagine that Sony will want to keep it exclusive for at least a year, it's obvious people are buying PS3's just for MGS4 and I guess shifting units is a key for Sony.

They'll want developers to see an expanding user base and hence greater profits on PS3 games.

what does akiba even mean? is that suppossed to clue me into that he's going to be walking around with a brown stain on his butt?
what does akiba even mean? is that suppossed to clue me into that he's going to be walking around with a brown stain on his butt?
I think the fact that he's Johnny Sasaski should clue you in that he's gonna be walking around with the brown stain. Johnny's been in every MGS game and is constantly the source of diarrhea jokes. I think the Akiba part is supposed to be a reference to Akihabara, but I'm not sure.
I wonder what the budget for MGS4 was. I've got a hard time believing it's going to make a profit any time soon sitting on the PS3 only.
Seems like it will do pretty well, surprisingly. Sold 300k its first day in Japan, likely headed for a 450k first week or so. Which would already make it the best-selling PS3 game over there.
I wonder what the budget for MGS4 was. I've got a hard time believing it's going to make a profit any time soon sitting on the PS3 only.
I thought I heard somewhere it had to sell around 1 million copies. The game sold over 300k copies in one day in Japan, and that doesn't include any PS3 bundle containing the game (which also sold out at many retailers there). If my county (definitely not the biggest one) has around 1k preorders at just GS, I pretty much guarantee the game sold 1 million copies or more on JUST the initial date, worldwide (PS3 also has its smallest userbase in Japan. Also, MGS series has been selling the best in Europe, and that's where PS3 has its largest userbase). Most games budget, they have to sell 500k to make a profit, and bigger budget games have to sell around 1-2 million to make a profit. I'm pretty much thinking the game will sell 2.5 million overall, and as long as it does, the game is fine. This isn't like many a brand new IP which people may not care about, which needs to sell 500k and keeping it exclusive.

The main reason I don't see it ported is, LATE PORTS DON'T SELL. Despite all the added content VF5 had on 360, it did not sell as much as the PS3 version worldwide. PS3 has the smaller userbase too. Last gen, MGS2 Substance bombed very badly on Xbox (sold like 25X less on Xbox when compared to PS2). Lost Planet sold like crap on PS3 compared to 360 due to being a year late. Late ports just don't sell, and when you factor in the cost of porting (Porting MGS4 to 360 would be harder since the game uses a dual-layered Blu-ray disc at 50GB), the cost of porting isn't going to make up. If anything, Konami will release a MGS4: Sub something on PS3 in a year. Not trying to be in denial here or anything, but late ports do not sell. I guarantee Bioshock is going to sell like crap on PS3, because it's a late port (Gamers want their games NOW, and even if it comes a year later, it becomes old news. GC had a much smaller userbase than PS2, but RE4 on GC outside the PS2 version in the U.S.).

MGS4 is also an exclusive Sony would paid for (that and Final Fantasy main series). If there was ANY loss (which I doubt it), Sony would cover it (they certainly did for the Final Fantasy movie). Just look at the PSBlog, it's a game they won't shut up about and are not staying quiet over (It sometimes seems more like a Sony franchise than Konami). Plus, Kojima said himself, there's no way he's porting the game ever. And does Konami have anyone else left good enough to do a port??? Nope (Many of their development teams have downsized significantly since late last gen, which explains why their internal studios output is tiny now. Also, it explains why Silent Hill: Homecoming and Origins was outsourced).
From what people have said, the MGS2 Substance port on Xbox was terrible or something. Was Kojima involved in that?
The only issue with the port was there was a slight bit of slowdown at the very beginning and the controls may have felt weird (since it was designed for a PS controller). I certainly believe Kojima was involved since there was a big OXM interview with him at the time it was getting ported (I use to have that OXM issues too and remember that).

I do remember the game came out near the same time as Splinter Cell, which did very well on Xbox (not so good on PS2). Oh course quality of ports can hurt sales, but overall, if a port is a bit late, it just won't sell most of the time. Releasing a game simultaneously on two platforms, all versions tend to do good (or seem to sell at a ratio of comparing user bases usually).

Maybe not a good example, but the PS3 port of Overlord has all the 360 DLC and some added features I believe, but since it's late and selling at $60 (compared to the 360 version at $20), I can guarantee it will not sell and it might have been best to not bother (I see its good for those who only have one console, to bring a late port, but usually new games come along, and they get forgotten).

SPAWN MORE OVERLORDS!

you require more vespene gas~

I actually liked the demos to Overlord, but I don't think I'll ever buy.

Anyway, called Sony over the PSN Card problems, now I gotta go back to Meijer. When I get back home, I plan to play lots more MGS4.

Well, it's NOT a game for everyone, I know that, but I thought I remember you saying you'd never get it (before release). I liked Resistance, despite not being into FPS much, but I mostly just played it online at the time. It's a game that starts off very slow, but gets much better as time goes on.

Folklore rocks too.
I thought I heard somewhere it had to sell around 1 million copies.
MGS4 needs to sell more than a million. It needs a couple million in its lifetime to start to pull profit. It's ridiculous. Nothing against the game, but I don't know how it will sell a large million number of copies for a system that has barely over a 10 million fanbase around the world when halo 3's lifetime units are close to 8 million and it's on a console that has a nearing 20 million fanbase.

I would be shocked if the game showed up on the 360 a year from now. The game fills up a blu-ray disc, requires installs, and just lookit them graphics. I've never seen anything on the 360 that comes close. Hell, even Crysis doesn't look as polished.
Any GGTers have DirecTV? Any experiences?
I had it before and loved it. But that was when they still had the Tivo made DVR and before they started leasing their equipment rather than giving it away or selling it for free....

I'd still probably take them over Comcast if I had the option in my current place though, just because I hate Comcast so much.....but maybe not as I need the cable internet since Fios isn't available and when we tried DSL it was slow as balls here due to shitty wiring in the condo building.

DirecTV sells their equipment still, at least that's the impression I get from their site.

I wonder if there's anyway to share recorded shows on a DVR with another receiver-only unit...

Just really trying to figure out how to best handle the game setup in our new place, if two TVs is really a wise use of money, etc, etc.

From when I remember having direct TV, I hated it. Always went out during storms, sometimes it would randomly just quit which would result in us calling them and constantly having to get it fixed and it was just a miserable experience. But to note, I had it when satelite TV had just started to get big, which could have been the result of a lot of my problems.

I say, if you have dishnetwork available in your are, I HIGHLY recommend them. Awesome customer service and super reliable, I've never had a problem with dish network.

I've had both DirectTV and DishNetwork and agree that DishNetwork is better...you can get a better starting year package, you don't get charged on returns (damages due to spills etc), dvr is just as good as tivo (maybe even easier to use), and you get color-coated remotes! :)

Played MGS4 all night last night and I have to say, the graphics are fucking ridiculous. There were parts where I couldn't believe I was actually playing because it looked so good.

I especially love how seamless the transition is between movie bits and the gameplay. You'll be watching a cinematic and then your life bar appears and it's like "whoa, time 2 go fight!"

I played it at my friends, which is why I said I hated it. I don't just say I hate games without playing them first.... Yes Folklore rocks, but Jer doesn't like JRPG's which is why I didn't include it on his list.

It still sucks, and it still does that.

Lulz I'm still on MGS4 first act Liquid something. I just met Drebin how much further do I have to go! I'm in no way in hell rushing through this game. I am making myself stop, because I know there is nothing like experiencing the game for the first time.

Yes, yes, yes to all the impressions--graphics=amazing, immersion=amazing. I can't wait to play it again tonight!
Dark:
You still got a ways to go to finish the act

Alright thanks man for letting me know, I'll probably put in some game time with it tonight. I'm glad I got this weekend off, I'm definitely going to have some game play time with NGII, and MGS4.

My brother picked this up today. Along with Orange Box and a 1 year warranty it came out to $1390.xx IIRC.

At Bestbuy I got my Dad the 3:10 to Yuma Blu-ray for Father's Day.

Then at CVS later I got him this Father's Day card. -->

Oh yeah and I canceled my MGS4 LE which was $10 and ended up getting Sega Genesis Collection (PS2) for use on my PS3.

Woo Okami Complete Works, the US version is shipping from amazon right now! GO! I got mine coming soon!

I like some JRPGs, but they have to be really, really good, and not feature 12 year old girls and 12 year old boys that look like girls and be filled with cliches.

I want to try that remote play feature sometime. Can you do something like put a PS1 game in the PS3 and play it via Wi-Fi on your PSP somewhere? That sounds amazing.
On a 40" screen? I don't think that's really a worthwhile upgrade there. I was always told that 1080 really wasn't a decent investment until you broke into the 50s.
It's worth it if you have an Xbox 360 and/or PS3.

No, 37" or higher is where you'll really start to notice a difference. It won't be as drastic as the difference between 720 and 1080 on a 50" or higher set, but it'll definitely be noticeable.
It's worth it if you have an Xbox 360 and/or PS3.
That doesn't really change my questioning of it. I've got stuff that can output at 1080p, no problem, it's that at 40" the screen's not really big enough for someone to notice the difference in detail that the resolution brings. I suppose viewing distance is an issue too.

Besides, most games this gen run natively at 720p anyway. It's really the BluRay argument that is the most forceful one.
