Aw don't tell me Metal Slug 7 is a disappointment. I already passed on Bangai-o Spirits because it didn't turn out as awesome as it was supposed to. :/

Finally got to try the Pure Demo. It's pretty fun. I'd pick it up for sure when it drops to like $20 or less. :p
But Dragon Quest IV is a lot better than I thought, I'm really enjoying it.
:applause::applause::applause::applause::applause::applause::applause::applause:

Yeah, me too. I mean, I've played the NES version several times like 8-10 years ago so I kinda knew what to expect, but all the cool new upgrades they've added have really made me appreciate it even more. It has reminded me why I've always considered this to be one of my top 10 favorite RPGs of all time. I'm still just in Chapter 2 tho, so I'm hoping that I keep being surprised as I continue to play.

I'm really hoping they'll announce a US release date for DQ V sometime soon, but I'm not betting on hearing anything till next year. I've heard that DQ V is considered the best in the series by Japanese fans so I'm really looking forward to playing it almost as much as I have been anticipating DQ IV.
I'd give that to Sly Cooper.
I'd disagree with you heavily there because out of the 4 Sony Computer Entertainment published platforming series last gen, Sly was my least favorite. I still enjoyed it no doubt, but I liked Ratchet & Clank the best, followed by Jak (all of them), and Ape Escape (catching monkeys' is TOO much fun).
Playing through Quest for Booty.

The Ratchet and Clank series is so awesome. Best 3D platforming games to date IMO.
This. The R&C series is so awesome.

I don't get it. I played R&C Future, and I remember like 3 or 4 platforming sections. The whole rest of the game was a 3rd person shooter. That does not make it a platformer.

I think DQVI is the one they like the best. Glad to see people enjoying a game I loved at 10 years old.
There's plenty of platforming in R&C games. I don't consider it all that much a shooter since I probably use guns less than wrench/lightning whip. Overall, I mean you're hoping and climbing many platforms, it's just that it combines other genres and makes it more than a simple platformer (most seem to think a platformer is a game you control a plumber or some cute furry creature with zero violence, but that's not all there has to be for a game to still be a platformer).
I don't get it. I played R&C Future, and I remember like 3 or 4 platforming sections. The whole rest of the game was a 3rd person shooter. That does not make it a platformer.
It's not really a platformer. It's an action game with platforming blended in.

TMK, being a "platformer" has nothing to do with the characters, it has to do with the dominant gameplay. When most of the game has nothing to do with traversing obstacles, climbing around, hopping from point to point, then it can't be a platformer. At this point, Uncharted was more of a platformer than R&CF. That, of course, doesn't make it bad in anyway. It's just a misnomer to call it a platformer. Was the original game less action-based? Maybe that's how it got a bit skewed into that category.

I wish we could get a real platformer sometime... one that doesn't have kiddie shit all over the place, and that doesn't have combat. It'd be so cool.

I still don't see what the big deal is with Ratchet and Clank, though... I tried the PS3 game and it's solid, but other than the weapons, it never really did anything that cool. It was basically a game of "hey, run around shoot stuff look at our Pixar-style movies, neat huh?", but there wasn't any defining mechanic or anything...

That's completely true, but it just worked so well.

So I'm going to all region choir today, even though I have a cold. I don't have my own license or vehicle yet, so I have to ride the bus up, which means I have to ride it back and I can't go to the gamestop that is 3 blocks away and get yakuza and kof. Balls.

I'd rather bash people's faces into walls.

Thanks, Yakuza 2!

It's a damn fine entry in the Meat 'n Potatoes genre.

That's the genre for games that A) Don't suck and B) Ain't fo bitches.

There's little better feeling than to get hassled by some punk on the streets and make him run off crying because you just beat him in the head with a street sign.

Exactly how I feel. But by your definition, there has never been a "real platformer."

Well Uncharted and Tomb Raider Anniversary were close. They had combat, but (at least in TR Anniversary's case), it definitely was kept to a minimum.

uncharted is like all shooting and auto-platforming. I loved it until I realized I wasn't playing Dude Raider, but instead Dudes of War.

I like the part in Ratchet and Clank Future where it fucks up on your TV and either forces 480p mode blurriness or 1080p mode with glitchy graphics on the bottom 5% of the screen. Thanks for being friendly to people using computer monitors, Sony.

They really need to enable a 1680(or whatever)x1050 mode on both consoles, but at least 360 has more VGA friendly resolutions available.

Funny that the only thing I'm really keeping my PS3 for is the downloadable games and the PS2 Backwards Compatibility. I could sell all my disc games right now and feel just about the same about the system. All I've got left is Warhawk, Ridge Racer 6, Motorstorm, and Ninja Gaiden Sigma. I'm getting rid of Ridge Racer 6 today and Motorstorm when Pacific Rift gets cheap. Plus I've got Ninja Gaiden on original Xbox, minus the screen tearing and awful rachel mode..

Guess I tuned out what I hated about that game as much as possible. I mean, make no mistake, I didn't like Uncharted, but the good parts of that game were legit (which yes, means not the combat.)

That's a bad thing?

Ratchet and Clank definitely isn't a pure platformer. It's a platformer-shooter hybrid and does both damn well. That's probably why I like it so much, and was slightly overwhelmed with Mario Galaxy. I'm just not big into sheer platformers anymore. They tend to be too "kiddy" (for lack of a better word) in design and I just like shooting stuff.

I've pretty much accepted that all I like anymore are shooters, with an occasional Bioware (or similar) RPG, or action/fighthing game mixed in. Oh, and the occasional puzzler on the DS. So my tastes have changed dramatically from past generations when I mainly played platformers, JRPGs and some sports games and had little interest in shooters.

Some XBL demo thoughts:

Mercs 2 - Really fun. Like, I never played the original Mercs, so I didn't know what to expect. But damn, what I got was just fun all over the place. Minus a few points for the fact that trees explode like I nuked them when I nudge them with a car.

Fracture - Oh, wow. They're really releasing this during the Holidays? That's just....wow. It's pretty much assier Gears of War with a really boring gimmick. (First, raise the ground. Now...here comes the twist...LOWER THE GROUND!1!1!) No.

Pirates VS Ninjas Dodgeball - Who the fuck is responsible for this.
That's a bad thing?
I loved Uncharted, but there was just too much shooting. I thought the shooting mechanics worked fine, but that doesn't mean they should turn each gunfight into an endurance battle.

I think even fewer, but tougher enemies would've been better if they were worried about it being too easy. The mechanics worked just fine and I thought were a lot of fun (except for a few times later in the game when I was trying to go for cover at one spot, and he kept sticking to another spot... right in the line of fire. :p)

Yeah I am. I've never enjoyed a dragon quest game before but I'm hooked on this one for some reason.

I think JRPGs should only be on portables from now until forever. They don't work anywhere else.

Only question is should the translation be this bad? I'm on the second chapter and I can hardly make out what people are saying most of the time. It's really bad.

So I'll be playing Battle Fantasia and SCIV today, so hit me up on XBL if you want to play either.
If you want to play Madden, hit me up, I'm always game.

Oh, and no I'm not getting the NBA games gunm. Football games and Hockey games for me (speaking of which, I need NHL 09).

It really does. I'm sick of all these games where they give you a concept like blowing shit up, but forget to design a game around it or polish it at all.

It did feel like it was lacking polish, but considering you can destroy almost anything in the game, it's understandable why there are glitches/stuff.

Still, that game is tons of fun online.
You have it? Make sure to add me up on XBL so we can play!
Not at the moment unfortunately. Soon though, soon.
That's a bad thing?
yep. It presents itself as a game that'll be about a treasure hunter/explorer/adventurer. Instead, you get One-Man Army game #3082897982™: Tropical Region Edition. They couldn't even keep out the aliens. Small miracle that Nathan didn't randomly shave his head at that point and don heavy futuristic body armor.

He explored the best way to kill a man and zombie, he adventured into the mysterious ways of love, he hunted for bewbs and gold, etc. Good enough for me.
