As reported by several websites yesterday, including IGN, Japanese developer Level-5 has unveiled its first adventure, whose title translates to Professor Layton and the Mysterious Village. Better known for its successful console RPGs like Dark Cloud and Dragon Quest VIII, Level-5 will be self-publishing the new DS game in Japan.

The game reportedly follows the exploits of Professor Layton and his assistant, a young boy named Ruke, as they discover a series of unique mysteries to solve upon their arrival in Mysterious Town.

Paradise

MarioColbert had gathered some info on this one being ported to the DS by Whitebird Productions as well, this was a 2006 release for the PC by Benoît Sokal:

According to White Birds website, they are also porting Paradise to Nintendo DS. Not really much more info than that. Again, Benoît Sokal...

Paradise is a point-and-click adventure developed by Benoît Sokal (best known for the award-winning Syberia and Amerzone). Set in the heart of Africa, the story follows a young woman named Ann Smith as she crosses the continent to take a leopard back to Kilimanjaro, the place of his birth, encountering fabulous, unknown animals in the wilderness on the way. Fraught with political turmoil, the lush landscapes are beautiful and dangerous. Puzzle solutions are seamlessly embedded in the story as players interact with their environment and other characters to gain insight into clues that will help reveal Ann’s true identity and answer why she’s in this strange African land.

World Detective Monumental Heist

When Sandlot Games asked if I wanted to be in the focus group for World Detective: Monumental Heist, a new game, I knew going in that this is not the final release and that they are aware of issues within the game. With that in mind, I was still excited to dive into this nifty opportunity.

The tutorial mission (which you can skip if you wish) introduces you to Commissioner Lynch. He welcomes you to the World Detective Agency and assigns you your first case - finding out who stole the world's largest ball of twine. Luckily, he will guide you through the various areas of the screen that you'll use as you navigate the world, investigating your cases. That ball of twine is just the tip of the iceberg, by the way. The thieves are actually stealing world monuments, and you have to get them back!

In each city, there are a variety of locations you can visit. At each location, there is one witness you can interrogate at any given time. This person may give you miscellaneous commentary or a clue to your case. This clue might be a description of the suspect, something about their interests or a hint at the city they've traveling to next.

There is a little crime computer in which you enter your suspect information. You enter physical characteristics as you learn them, as well as hobbies, fears, favorite modes of transportation, or even previous criminal record. As you enter this information, you can query the crime computer. It will tell you if you've found a match or that you've entered incorrect data in one of your fields. Who knew scarabs wouldn't be considered pets? In any case, when you've gathered enough clues and successfully narrowed it down to one suspect, you will be issued an arrest warrant for the foul miscreant.

As you receive clues, you can go to the world map and choose any of the different highlighted cities as your next destination. You'll want to make sure you understand your hint before you set off. You're given a limited amount of time to investigate each case, and flying takes a lot of time. If you made the right choice, you get a message that you're on the trail. If you made the wrong choice, you'll learn that the trail is cold. At this point, your only option is to go back to the previous city and start gathering those clues again. This is when I realized that it's been a REALLY long time since I had to take geography, and for this game, that is NOT a good thing.

.....

I enjoyed the time I spent as a world detective, but I'm pretty convinced I won't progress very far in the game without solid reference materials at hand. Thank goodness for the Internet. My hope is that before the final version of World Detective is released, it will include some sort of additional hint mechanism for those of us that consider ourselves geographically impaired. I will definitely be checking out World Detective: Monumental Heist when it goes live.

Runaway: Dream of the Turtle

This one was a sequel that was somewhat recently released on the PC. Some of the screen shots below are from the PC game.

However it predecessor was a pretty good game overall in my opinion. I have this one for PC but have yet to play it through.

Here is what Adventuregamers had to say:

"Hawaii – an idyllic island paradise. It’s the spot Brian Basco and Gina Timmins have chosen to take a well-earned vacation. An impromptu daytrip to a remote and relatively uninhabited island goes awry, however – Brian forces Gina from the plane, giving her the only working parachute. Brian luckily survives the plane’s crash landing, but Gina has disappeared, setting the stage for a highly entertaining story. In Runaway: The Dream of the Turtle, players will travel the world, from Alaska and Hawaii to the depths of the sea and the sky above. Become immersed in a tongue-in-cheek story where you’ll meet a crazy cast of miscreants in order to solve a mystery too weirdly entertaining for words in this title that pays homage to all that was great about the glory days of graphical adventure games."

Insecticide the Game

Preorder this for a bonus small art booklet (Thanks Strell!)

The developer, Crackpot Entertainment, is staffed with members of the dev teams behind Full Throttle, Day of the Tentacle, Grim Fandango and Curse of Monkey Island. Infested with puns, yes, but it still looks like an awesome adventure game concept and maybe the most promising cockroach adventure since Bad Mojo.

The Ankh series started on the PC, Assil's latest adventure heads to DS

Undercover: Dual Motives

Anaconda's Undercover: Dual Motives is set to be released early next year (March 2007 starting in German-speaking territories), and is a prequel to their current PC release Undercover: Operation Wintersun. The stroy of that game involves an "exciting hunt for a Nazi nuclear bomb in the Second World War". In the DS game you will take control of Dr. Johnathan Russell, who is a British Scientist, hired by the British MI6 to be sneaky sneaky, and Audrey, a Ninja Assassin secretary. The game is being developed by Austrian developer Sproing (who are also releasing Panzer Tactics DS for the same console), and will make use of the touch screen for solving a variety of puzzles as you investigate a research facility.

Myst: DS

And while we'd like to say that Myst on the DS is going to be a brand new game, instead Midway is looking to bring the game that started it all to Nintendo's handheld platform. No worries though, as the game's code has been re-written, specifically with the DS in mind. New sound clips, new touch-screen controls and a new age to explore (the Rime Age) should help ensure both fans of the series and newcomers find something to enjoy come time for the game's release this November in Europe.

Sinking Island(From White Bird - Makers of Paradise) - DS version of their new game

http://www.adventuregamers.com/newsitem.php?id=1295

Written by Benoît Sokal, Sinking Island is the first game in a planned series of adventures starring middle-aged private investigator Jack Norm. The third-person game takes place on a private tropical island that is literally sinking under the weight of the colossal art deco-styled hotel built upon it. In a classic whodunit with a twist, the hotel's billionaire owner is murdered, and there are ten suspects on the island, each with a strong motive for having done the deed. It's up to Norm to determine the true culprit. The catch? With the island sinking and the game occurring over a simulated three day period, lower level environments (and the evidence they contain) are only available until they're lost forever to the sea, so players will need to make best use of locations and time in order to succeed.

The surprising news, however, is that White Birds has also begun pre-production on a DS version of the game. Believing there to be a strong market for more mature games on the popular handheld (an opinion we certainly share), White Birds will retain the same storyline, characters, and gameplay of the PC version, and adapt the controls and presentation to the unique features of the DS. The main screen will be the lower one, while various secondary interface features such as the inventory, map, and notes will be shown on the top screen. The link above has a mock-up of the game provided by the developer.

Needless to say this is looking promising to say the least...

I'm anxious to see how Hotel Dusk turns out.

I beat PW2 (import) earlier this year, it's just as good as the first one. I'm debating getting it in its US release just to support the franchise more here.

Undercover looks incredible, but that plot synopsis is one of the most mundane ones I've heard in a while. Nuclear bombs and nazis? Both played out to the limit. Hopefully there are other aspects to the story that will keep me engaged.

Thanks for posting these, I hadn't heard of some of them. I'm really looking forward to Hotel Dusk and, of course, PW2.

Hmm... I'm already looking forward to Hotel Dusk since I picked up PW2 already, but Sinking Island sounds pretty good as well.

When I was reading the summary for Undercover, the whole thing threw me off when it said "ninja assassin secretary." I just couldn't respect a game like that anymore (unless they can prove me wrong here...).
Do you know what I'm going to buy?

All of these.
Agreed.

Really pumped about Hotel Dusk and I'd never heard about Sinking Island. I buy anything with Benoit Sokal's name on it.

I've already pre-ordered Phoenix Wright 2 and Hotel Dusk. I was aware of the Professor Layton game but not the other two. I love TV mysteries (Columbo, Perry Mason, Monk, Sherlock Holmes, Poirot) so any game that lets me play as an investigator automatically goes on my wish list.

I still haven't picked up Touch Detective. Too many other games to play.

But the fact that these are going onto the DS format is awesome. I'd much rather play these kinds of games with some kind of clicker, whether it be a mouse or a stylus, than on a gamepad. And the fact that they're portable is really attractive to me too.

How in the world in the DS pushing graphics like Undercover? I can't help but wonder if the animation is really choppy or something because those still shots look gorgeous!

I'm gonna buy them all as well to show support for more of these types of games. Sam and Max got me hooked and I keep hoping for a DS port of it or my other favorite adventure game, the genesis version of scooby doo.

I'll pick up any adventure game that isn't a total stinkbomb. It would be great if Her Interactive would do the Nancy Drew games on the DS... the one on the GBA was pretty fun, if a little awkward at times and plagued by a crummy save system.

The resurrection of adventure games is one of the things I like best about the DS.

I'll be getting Phoenix Wright 2 and Hotel Dusk for sure. Professor Layton sounds interesting, so I'll keep an eye on it. Sinking Island also sounds pretty neat, but it reminds me of getting trapped on the shore in Lost in Blue- not fun.

Add to the DS list: Myst DS and that Secret Files: Tugunska. Snake2715: props on the best thread possible.:applause:

GBA version of Broken Sword: Shadow of the Templars is also quite playable (despite the fact that the controls are quite dumbed down to make the title portable).

With Revolution Software (Broken Sword, Beneath a Steel Sky) looking to get into Nintendo DS development, I am keeping fingers crossed for some more portable adventures.

Hello yet again, adventure lovers, I bring great news.

ANKH IS HEADING TO NDS.
(screenshot inside - not sure if it's 100% legit)

The DS version uses the Stylus as a mouse pointer, and the game boasts varied locations, provocative mysteries, an exciting history, plentiful black humour and a promise of an unforgettable adventure experience.

A stylus as a mouse pointer? Who could have thought? :]

Check it out - seems that adventure game companies are aware that I have a DS now and they are working very hard on making me go broke.

Nice news. I wasn't aware this thread existed, but thanks to snake for making it, and to the Powers that be that let me see it, and anyone else responsible for this moment in my life.

Anxiously awaiting Myst and Tunguska and Professor Layton. Ankh looks like it could be cool.

I expressed the same concern about the screenshot with the "100% legit" comment. This one along with Tunguska seem to be the most literal adaptations of classic point-and-click gameplay adapted to the slylus. I thought of that immediately upon first seeing the NDS, but that's because I'm a god damn dork.

Oh and how could I forget? Insecticide is coming for DS as well. I don't know about "adventure" or not, or how proper it is, but it looks... DELICIOUS.

I don't know the exact quote, but it made me laugh my ass off for minutes:

Yeah, They could almost play off that in a way. Like another detective (this game0 was out there working on the same case...

Doesn't that ball of twine really exist? I thought it was in MN or something.

Thanks for the update. And where do I sign up for everyone of these?

I had a conversation with a clerk in a store last evening. He asked what my favorite DS game so far was. With around 40 DS games so far, and only a handful which I didn't care for at all, I just sorta choked, and told him I couldn't think of one off the top of my head like that. He started talking about Hotel Dusk and asked about "another one sorta like it," I figured he was talking about Cings Trace Memory and "Oh yeah! that was good too."

I left the store and realized that most of the adventure games I've played on the DS were highly enjoyable games which I'd play through again without hesitation.

Oh man, I hadn't seen those screenies of Nancy Drew before... that looks AWFUL. Could it be any less spooky or mysterious? Maybe if they added some puppies or hearts...

 • pointing
 • clicking
 • touching the screen with a stylus is okay, too.

Sinking Island Official Website | Screenshots

This is a new title from White Birds Productions - famous for the somewhat acclaimed Syberia dulogy. This title is also written by Benoît Sokal, and I hope he lets you actually interact with the world in ways that don't involve redundant dialog or mind-insulting "puzzles." (yeah, I don't like Syberia games). The title appears to be finished for the PC, and its DS port is coming, to the best of my info.

Runaway: The Dream of the Turtle Official Website | Screenshots

Yep, Runaway 2 is coming for the DS - and the Official Website hosts the official trailer - which is really something among the lines of MAKING OF RUNAWAY DS, complete with Developer's complaints about 4 MB of RAM for the DSsdf..

The screenshots are from the PC version - those are the only ones available at this time. Exciting, though. I know Strell is a fan of the first one in a major way.

Insecticide Official Website | Brand Spanking New Trailer | Screens

It seems that LucasArts' axe did not kill their "imaginatively awesome" division. Instead, it separated its many-headed beast of awesome into lesser demons. Dave Grossman rocks Telltale, Tim Schafer rocks Double Fine Style, Ron Gilbert's doing his own thang (and Penny Arcade's Adventures), Bill Tiller is doing that Vampyre Story awesomeness, and last but not least we have
Mike Levine doing this film noir with bugs (or whatever).

You get to fight AND solve puzzles, yet all in all, it's an adventure from adventure loving motherpeople. Best of all - JANUARY 2008 is a release date that makes me happy.
Nice list, hopefully we'll see similar games be released on the Wii in the near future.
Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law
Agatha Christie: And Then There Were None
Zack & Wiki Quest for Barbaros' Trasure (tomorrow, W00T!)

That reminds me. I need to finish Runaway 2.

I wonder how they are going to get all the voice onto that tiny of a cart. I guess it's possible.

Also, there are....decidedly non-family friendly overtones in the game. Not terrible, but definitely somewhere between PG-13 to a low, low R. I guess Nintendo must be cool with that.

I mean, in Japan they've got that pedololi game I suppose.

I need to go pick up the two Touch Detective games, and then figure out when Myst DS comes out.

On a related note, Runaway 1 was pretty good for what it was. Since the genre has become inundated with "freaky otherworldly pre-rendered graphics" clones, seeing Runaway taking it in a different direction was very refreshing. I'd suggest people to pick it up (either 1 or 2) if they are a fan of cartoony adventure games.

Voices can be a little irritating though.

Has anyone tried the CSI game yet? Was wondering if it's any good. Supposedly it's a direct port of the PC version, just with no speech and less graphical resolution.

Vegan,

For the DS huh? I vaguely remember seeing something on it. thanks to MarioColbert i will be updating this thread very very soon. Not right now as the last day of the month I have busy at work.
Has anyone tried the CSI game yet? Was wondering if it's any good. Supposedly it's a direct port of the PC version, just with no speech and less graphical resolution.
It doesn't come out until November 19th (according to gamestop.com and ign.com). My wife and I found the Xbox version (which includes this game and its prequel) to be moderately enjoyable for a sub-$10 (used) game, but I don't imagine that a port of half of a three year old game (or all of a 3 1/2 year old game, if you want to go back to the original PC version of Dark Motives) would be worth picking up for $30, especially with the loss of the voice talent, which is one of the major draws for a game like this. If you have an Xbox available to you, find a cheap used copy of that version (or get the original PC games, if you prefer). Otherwise, wait until you can get this really cheap -- it is way too short to pay full price.*

* - Based on the fact/assumption that it is a direct port. I have not played the DS version.

Bumping this for two reasons:

1) Professor Layton comes out on February 10, which pretty much means it will most certainly become this year's Hotel Dusk, being brutally overshadowed by Smash Bros. Make yourselves diligent, brothers, and look forward to it, as the art looks positively charming. Review scores seem to hover around an 8, which is quite good considering modern critics don't understand/hate adventure games of this type. This is primarily because they are stupid. Very, very stupid.

2) If you pre-ordered Insecticide, you can get a small artbook. I went ahead and did that and GS actually shipped the book early. Hard to call it a book - it's about 16 pages, softback, very thin. So I wouldn't say you HAVE to do it, but if you want to support the game, it's not a bad thing to get. I happen to love artbooks, so I'll take what I can get.

Additionally, if you pre-order, you can get a "bug blaster" code to redeem on their site. Unfortunately it's telling me that my code is invalid, so I've e-mailed them in hopes that I will get that taken care of.

You want to keep an eye on Insecticide almost purely because of the pedigree developers working on it, which includes a lot of the Lucasarts people from the Day of the Tentacle era. And since that is my favorite adventure game of all time, I'll gladly look forward to whatever it is those wonderful persons will create.

Well, that's assuming SSBB won't be
delayed to March
. If it is, then Professor Layton's could be a warm shoulder for us to cry on.
