Activision: "We Might Have to Stop Supporting Sony"

I dont even buy games from Activision anymore. They are pretty much like EA except worse. EA can atleast publish good games.
I haven't bought Activision games in a long time because their games haven't been worth buying. Call of Duty? A wimps game compared to Unreal.
Unreal Tournament sucks.

Activision shouldn't be complaining about prices when all they seem to put out is expensive and stale shit.

COD sucks. Infact it licks oprah's minge. COD has never had the testicular fortitude to go against Unreal Tournament in pure unadultered action. I'm glad that COD games have such a high resale value since so many people want em though. That means I can finish the campaign, resell it for near what I paid for it and go on.

And Activision complains because their CEO is a big complaining vagina with ever increasing expectations and demands.

Yeah wheres my next R6? No that wasn't a cheap shot at you this time, check out my acheesements i love that game. Real men play R6.

If you are being serious... there will probably be some flamers that come in and laugh anyway... Sorry, I'm not in the majority apparently. At least I won't die from a nad all the way across the damn map.

BTW, what's your rank on RSV2?

I think it was Elite 2 or something like that. If me and my wife hadn't beat it on co-op earlier I would have gotten a second copy for Live co-op but oh well.

I am surprised Ubisoft has made no major announcement concerning Ghost Recon or Vegas, they both sold extremely well on the PS3/360 and instead they try to innovate with unpolished turds like Hawx and End War. Boo on them.

Cool, yeah... I've been keeping my eye out for info on a new game like I do about earthquakes here. I'll be the first to post when it happens. As for some of the current games yeah, not so that great. Although, Hawx isn't all that bad.

If you want to play I'll probably be on playin.

I never even brought up Call of Duty. UT3 (at least on consoles) sucks the biggest balls you can find. Epic can fuck themselves after releasing that turd on the PS3. That game was so broken. Epic didn't have the testicular fortitude to fix the game until months and months after it was already out. Biggest waste of 60 bucks I ever spent.

I think that this is an idle threat by Activision, but no more idle than the gamers who have said they don't or won't buy Activision games as a result. I'll agree with others who have said this is probably more to push Sony to a price drop than anything else.

But I also think people are taking this too lightly. I'm reading all these, "big deal, they only make ________ that I like anyways." When the number one publisher of video games says that they might stop supporting a system, it's a big deal, despite how many games you personally like from that publisher. When publishers started dropping the gamecube, I read the same types of statements, and it ended up being a big deal.

We are all now dumber for having read this. You're free to like either game, but seriously who refers to a games "testicular fortitude."

I don't see why people are against Activision on this. They are basically saying they want the PS3 to price drop. That's a good thing. Even if PS3 is 3rd place this generation, I don't think Activision would stop developing for PS3.

mostly because its a lower end gaming company trying to come off like their support or lack of support would effect sony. i could see if ea said it or capcom or namco r squaresoft but activision ? itll be funny to see if sony does do a price drop if activiision will try and make it seem like their empty threat made it hapen.

Activision is one of the biggest publishers. I'd say much bigger than Capcom, Namco, or Squaresoft so Activision's say has a lot more weight. The console company doesn't care too much about quality, they just look at numbers (wii). Theoretically, if Activision pulls out, Sony is losing millions of potentional profit. Sony makes money off 3rd party game sales and Activision sells tons, good or bad. Someone at Sony will have to explain to their shareholder why their game division is suddenly losing several million and that could mean their job.

No PS3 owner is going to buy a 360 simply to play Activision titles, and anyone who would takes Call of Duty way too seriously.

Sparta is correct; Activision not supporting a system would be an enormous blow to the console.

Consider how much folks blame EA for the premature demise of the Dreamcast.

That all said, Activision will stop supporting one of the major three consoles the same day pigs fly.

Pretty funny how Activision say the PS3 is too expensive, then announce they're charging 55 pounds ($88) for Modern Warfare 2 in the UK.

They know too expensive when the see/announce it.

There's no doubt that it would be a major blow, but at this stage of the game I just can't see people picking up another console to play Activision games. If you were a Wii owner, or just getting your first console, I could see how this would sway your decision, if the threat ever came to fruition, but for people who currently own a PS3 already, I just don't know about them "defecting." The majority of those people constantly trash talk the 360 as if it had sex with their girlfriend. If I was wrong though, it would be amusing to see them all go out and get 360's to keep playing CoD. It may happen though, I just can't see it.

When a company that releases video games for over $100 on a regular basis multiple times a year suddenly turns around and says that your console is too expensive, you're bound to get a little miffed.

Activision is the biggest game publisher in the world, period. There's nothing wrong with that. Running around acting like you can say or do whatever you want, though, simply because of your size is what's pissing people off.

You do not want Activision to get its way. It will only end up screwing you in the end.

I agree completely. If anything, I think people are more amused than angered. It's complete hypocrisy when a publisher milks the shit out of IPs and releases games with expensive accessories but is gonna complain about the price of a console.

Seems to me this just an advance PR campaign (as someone already suggested) to build up anticipation for the redesigned PS3 with a reduced cost of entry. It is suicidal to acknowledge a replacement model with a lower price far in advance of release, since it would kill cash flow as the current product's sales grind to a halt. So more clever methods must be used to get people interested.

Big Publisher boss gets people buzzing about Big Console maker's product aspects, while giving Big Publisher opportunity to crow about strength of his product line. Everybody gets something.
Yes it does. Look at the PSP.
Buddy boy, I hate to break it to you, but piracy had little-to-no effect on their sales. Hell piracy in general has little effect on software sales.

You're starting to reek like a Sony fan boy. Might wanna do something about that.

It was an idle threat the actual motivations for which can only speculated upon. Activision is a publicly traded corporation and so long as it makes more money publishing titles for the PS3 than it would publishing exxclusively for the 360, which it does, then they couldn't ever back it up. The CEO is a fiduciary. He's just puffing.

The actual motivation is that PS3 system sales have been MUCH lower than anticipated. Every single publisher over invested in PS3 development in the last two years as a result. The impact is huge. Industry wide it's hundreds of millions of expected software sales that aren't there because the install base is so small.

Check this link for a look at some estimates of where analysts were expecting PS3 to be at the end of 2008. http://forum.pcvsconsole.com/viewthread.php?tid=16280 The PS3 was actually at 6.8MM at the end of 2008 with an 18% share of the current console generation market. It's roughly half of what the expectation was.

People are crazy if they think Kotick is implying that major releases wouldn't get released on the PS3. What he's implying is that a PS3 version would no longer be automatic going forward. Scenarios would be run showing 360 only versus 360/PS3 where it stands today. If a games sales are high enough (i.e. top tier titles like Call of Duty and Guitar Hero) it will always make sense to do a PS3 version. It's lower tier games where it would have an impact. Not that it even matters since we are getting a price cut.
