Here is the most up to date compiled list of all known guide deals listed and posted for this thread and similar threads. I will update this list as people post new guide deals. Everything listed in this thread “should” be the price listed or lower. These prices are typically company wide price reductions and not YMMV. But just because the prices are typically universal does not mean that they are guaranteed to be sold to you. Most stores have a destroy clause with the guide companies. So whether or not you get these guides depend on many many factors from how diligent a staff is to how reasonable or friendly one is. Good luck on any you may find and good luck on acquiring them. If anything is incorrect or missing please post so corrections can be made.

Now you can just cut, paste, print, and GO!!!

How you can help: You can keep a printed copy of this list in your jacket, wallet, purse whatever and when you go to any store that carries guides look for guides for games that have been out typically around six months or more and ask for a price check or better yet use a store scanner if they are available. If they are anything less than cover price write it down for us. Also please when you post the info here if it looks like it’s a temporary sale, please post that as well otherwise it will be assumed to a be a permanent price reduction. If you scan a guide and it comes up a different price that what the master lists suggests please list the day and store that you had the guide scanned. Also please list if you physically saw a self-scanner’s price, physically saw a cash registers price or vocally heard a price from the store’s staff. This might sound like a lot and of course we will take what we can get but this will go a long way to having the best master list as well as ferreting out different store practices and policy’s. All help is appreciated and thank you.

Trading: I spoke with the post office and found out that the cheapest form of mailing to the 48 contiguous states would be to use “media mail” It will take a little longer but it will also allow the least amount of money per transaction when trying to acquire guides for your collection. For an average guide weight of about 9 oz its $1.42 cents. All you need to do is put it in an envelope and ship it media mail. He mentioned no one should have a problem if you use the same envelope several times to cut down on costs. He also mentioned that when shipping Media mail that you cannot have any personal correspondence in the envelope. Only books and an invoice are acceptable. If trading is in you interest you do whatever is most comfortable for you and your trading party this was merely a FYI and a good way to keep it cheap.

Helpful links to check for reduced priced guides or guides in general. You will likely never find one cent guides here but various discounted guides and possibly some that you have been searching for.

Looking for assistance: I am looking for some staff from Best Buy’s, EB’s, Gamestop’s and stores of the like. When EB Games or Gamestop has a price reduction their shelves can be empty in a day or two to even as little as just a few hours. EB and Gamestop have daily price changes so all depending on the store’s staff they could be all gone almost immediately. If I could get some staff that can either post here first thing any day that they have a price reduction on guides or that might be able to text message me with such price reductions so that I might be able to inform CAG’ers ASAP. Whether or not us the end user would actually be able to get them from a particular stores staff is very much an YMMV but if there is anyone who can help this would greatly increase the chance’s of CAG’ers being able to pick up guides from these locations. If anyone is interested and able to help please e-mail me at [email protected]. Thank you all for your consideration.

Thank you all for making CAG what it is and for all your contributions.

Disclaimer: This list is intended to help all guide hunters. Please feel free to print yourself a copy and get what you can find. Please do not post this list on another site. {e-mail me please if for some reason you would want to. [email protected]} Please just link to this thread, add to this list and help it grow. Thank you

master list in post 2
I dunno the value of those issues, but a lot of the ones you listed are really good. I remember the premiere issue had Mario 2 as the cover story with a feature on the original Zelda, and Double Dragon, I think.

I might be interested in the Link's Awakening issue. Would you sell it?
It's a possibility but as of right now I'm just trying to find out what the value of this stuff is. The place where I bought this stuff from still has a bunch of other Nintendo Power issues as well, but most of those were random issues from 1990-1992 (a stack of about 30 issues).
Found a few guides at a local thrift shop. Not sure if any of them are of interest to anybody (see below). However, does anybody know what the approximate value of the Nintendo Power Premiere issue is worth (or any of the others)?? I saw values on ebay ranging from $20-$200. I'd attach a picture, but I don't know how.

Nintendo Power Premier Issue 1988
Nintendo Power Bonus Issue- Mega Man X (Vol. 56)
Nintendo Power Strategy Guide- Ninja Gaiden II
Nintendo Power March/April 1990- Super Mario Bros. 3
Nintendo Power- Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening (Vol. 50)
Nintendo Power- Mega Man 3 (Vol. 20)
Nintendo Power- Castlevania II- Simon's Quest (Sep./Oct. 1988)
Nintendo Power- Star Tropics (Vol. 21)
Nintendo Power- Zelda II (Jan./Feb. 1989)
Game Player's Strategy Guide to Nintendo Games- Dragon Warrior II (Jan. 1991)
Ah, what it was like to be a kid and throw all of those away eventually. =P
Ah, what it was like to be a kid and throw all of those away eventually. =P
I was just trying to remember if I ordered my parents to keep all my Nintendo Power or toss them. I'm going to have to investigate next time I'm home.
I saw some zelda four swords guides at BB if anyone wants
Has this pennied out yet?

Yah, I've seen Four Swords at BB too...it's not pennied yet is it? If it is, I'm gonna be ticked I didn't grab it.

As for the premiere issue of Nintendo Power. In mint condition, it goes for around $10 shipped but if you watch Ebay you can find them cheaper. I've seen full sets go for around the cost of Media Mail shipping (costs around $100 to ship a set of NP mags). They don't seem to be rare or in high demand...average print run was in the millions and there were a lot of people that saved these.

IIRC the Four Swords guide is one of those from about a year ago that dropped to a penny for a few weeks, then went back up in price and has stayed there ever since. Go figure.
IIRC the Four Swords guide is one of those from about a year ago that dropped to a penny for a few weeks, then went back up in price and has stayed there ever since. Go figure.
It just never dropped. There was a few in that group like Sonic Heroes and LotR: Return of the King that never dropped either. Strange. I still see some at the local BB.

One of the BB stores near me had a huge stack of these mint before Christmas. I check last week and they have 2 left...very beat up. Guess a bunch of people paid full price at Christmas...probably when buying the game as a gift.

It dropped at EB, maybe that's what you're thinking of. I actually picked up a spare copy to trade a week or two back when I picked up the latest round of drops. It was at my local "EB that time forgot". :p

Anyone know if the art of world of warcraft guide ever got pennied out anywhere? I mostly see the WOW atlas, but I have seen the artbook at 1 or 2 places (mostly in hidden corners). Just wondering if anyone knows whether they went to a penny or not.

They didn't, I saw tons of them when I was guide shopping a week or so ago.... it's the next thing I'm waiting on.

anyone know the difference btwn the disgaea first run guide and the special edition guide? is one just rarer than the other? which one is better? i'm getting ready to drop a chunk of cash on one and want to make sure I don't buy the wrong one

thanks

They did a second printing because the first one was incomplete / had errors... I believe the special edition guide is the revised one.

FYI, the guide is available for free online in PDF format, as well, and is available from the publisher for $29.99 (not sure if its more expensive then what you're paying, though).

i was probably just going to buy it from doublejumpbooks for $39.99 online  ...in the end, it looks to be cheaper than what anyone on ebay/half is selling it for

i obviously don't even want to spend half of that, but i've been looking and haven't found any cheaper (checking the trade forum now)

I got the original disgaea guide from kimsh0t in one of his better trades on CAG

Go with the second edition, it's cheaper (I think), plus it added a thing or two. Supposedly there were errors in the first, but I used the first one and never noticed anything.

If you're the type who wants the hard to find things go for the first one, but for practical purposes I don't think there's any real reason not to take the revised one.

Maybe this is nooby, but how can we get these guides for .01 cent? It's not available online and most stores aren't advertising anything of the sort. Please help.
you did mean $39.99, right?
I remember it being $29.99 a long time ago... guess they raised the price.

The guide isn't worth $40 by any means, or even $30, espically with the free PDF. I'm pretty disappointed DoubleJump would overcharge on their own guide for no reason at all, other then they know its in demand.
Still looking for Psychonauts and Phantom Brave. Can anyone help? I have most of the recent BB/GS/EB guides and old TRU guides for trade.
I've got Psychonauts. If you want email me your list or CML for wants.
Maybe this is nooby, but how can we get these guides for .01 cent? It's not available online and most stores aren't advertising anything of the sort. Please help.
It works like this: We watch this thread religiously and when a store drops guides to .01 (Best Buy, TRU, EB and GS are the main targets) we all run to our locals and try to scoop some up. Then many of us trade them with each other (to get the ones we wanted but couldn't find).

They are an unadvertised deal and most often the clerks are clueless about them. Sometimes the management may block attempts to buy them. Many stores are dumping them very quickly.

Your chances of getting any particular guide aren't that good and they decline day by day after the price drops.

But, if during the next drop you could get a couple of a really desirable guide you may be able to trade for ones that were dropped in the past.

Anyone here encounter stores that try to get you to preorder stuff to get the guides for a penny? I got two preorders that I don't want (not at retail anyway) due to that recently. I reluctantly agreed (one went into the whole you're getting a good deal for these guilt trip) since, unfortunately, the people at those stores both recognized me from previous trips and I figured it's better to pay 5 bucks, get the guides and keep good relations with the store than to refuse to get a preorder (neither said I had to and I think I could have pushed for getting the guides without it) and come off like a jerk making them less likely to give me guides in the future and unlikely to ever check the back for preorder bonuses or pennied guides, things both had done previously.
It works like this: We watch this thread religiously and when a store drops guides to .01 (Best Buy, TRU, EB and GS are the main targets) we all run to our locals and try to scoop some up. Then many of us trade them with each other (to get the ones we wanted but couldn't find).

It's also good to keep a mental list of stores that:

A. Don't clear out their guides (or very rarely do)
B. Always miss a decent amount of guides
C. Will let you take guides once they're pulled (only good for a couple days after the drop)

I was lucky with one eb though. One of them never cleared out their guides but recently (like most eb's it seemed) put all the non recent guides in back. Luckily they did that for only a week and then put them all back out.

While is a good list for EB / Gamestop stores, it is virtually impossible for Best Buy stores, since your chances of getting penny guides boil down to who is working the dept the day the price changes go into effect, the manager on duty, and many other factors.

Best Buy seems to go on a case by case basis for guides. The previous drop, the local Best Buy had every guide tagged at .01 on the shelf, and even made shelf labels for their guides. This time around, they had gotten rid of all the guides before the store even opened and told me they "corporate tells us we aren't allowed to sell them".

Likewise, two stores that NEVER pulled penny guides decided that this recent drop was the time to do it. Hell, after they pulled them, I still bought penny guides from the two drops before it, since they only pulled the recent one.

Another store decided to mark all their guides at .01 and sell them. So much for corporate telling them they couldn't sell them, huh?

It's very random when it comes to Best Buy.

Not always true. I tend to only go to two best buys for penny guides, one I've never found a guide at and one I always do. Seriously, one of them leaves the stuff for weeks. I think they only remove them when they run out of space since they'll be tons of pennied out guides left out for weeks after the drop, like 8 of the same one sometimes.

I don't usually bother much with best buys penny guides unless I'm near one because A. I can usually get what I want at the one I mentioned and B. The other are too hit or miss to be worth it. My mother works near one and she'll often check for me when they are pennied. I don't go there much but she has good luck usually, they often even mark them for a penny. Basically 1 always has guides, 1 almost always does, 1 never does, and the 4 others around here are entirely random.
how often do they do a big drop like this past 1/31?
Once a year :whistle2:(

An especially big drop is not that often. There are pretty much monthly drops overall.

I agree with most of the other comments above.

You cannot rely on a store to be consistent with drops. Sometimes my TRU puts the guides out on a table marked .01 . . . last time they put them in a cart to scrap them (I was able to "liberate" a pile with a friendly checkout). Many times my BB just leaves them alone or puts a .01 tag on the rack slot. This last time they had them on a cart (the afternoon of the drop) and I liberated as many as I could carry in 2 trips. Then next day the cart was gone.

I think everyone will agree that the key is speed. And then secondly, for me, trades.

The 2 guides I wanted most (Psychonauts and Conker) were unavailable at my EB (which had the guides in back and they gave me a pile because I'm a regular . . . I gave them a box of candy at Xmas :)) but I got those 2 by trade. A $2 guide (after postage) is still pretty cool.

I still say put the date that the list was updated in the title of the thread so we don't have to open the thread every day to see if it's been updated or not.

Yeah, that would be nice, so when scrolling through the VG Deals forum, I can say "Wow, theres some new pennied out guides". I probably would've ended up with Makai Kingdom, had I seen an update to the title, which is easy to do, when updating the OP.

But like shrike suggested a few pages back, we need a new thread, and floormat is really the only one who should start it.

I've been away from the whole "Penny guide scene" for a while now, but I'm hoping to get back into it. Maybe we can have one thread for discussion of guides and possible drops and another for posting only drops? That way, seeing a new post in the thread with only notifications of drops would be an indication of a new drop. It's probably not a good idea since it is coming from me and I usually don't have good ideas, but I figured it would be something I'd suggest.

Thats a good idea, and a bit better than mine (having seperate threads for each store, would be way too tedious). But I am sure somehow, it would end up with discussions in the guide deal thread, instead of the actual discussion thread. Unless of course a mod would ensure a cleaned up deals thread.

I dont think it is that difficult to check everytime there is a new post here. I think the current method is working.

Yep... works fine for me, if I don't check it for a few days, and check it to see that people are frantically looking for something at a store, I just go back a few pages to find the source.

sorry all working a lot at the moment and prepering for my wifes b-day. I'll restart the thread as soon as i can and consider the other suggestions. Thanks again all for all your help.

Just went to TRU today to just poke around, and decided it was time to clean out their stock of Tekken 5 guides. I passed on them before since i had like 5 copies at the time - but i got rid of them all, so brought the 4 copies up to the register to buy. The guy scanned them and said he wasn't allowed to sell them. I told him id never had a problem buying there before, and mentioned the description of some other cashier that has sold them to me before(i think it was a manager too), so he said he could do it this one time. Then he asked where i got them from because he is supposed to pull them. I shouldv'e laughed and told him they were pennied out like 3 months ago, but i decided not to ;p

Found some pennied out PC guides at Best Buy today:
Star Wars Galaxies The Total Experience
Star Wars Galaxies Jump to Lightspeed
Rome Total War Spartan
Stronghold 2
Myst 4 Revalations
Medal of Honor Pacific Assault
I checked Half Life 2 Raising the Bar but no luck. Still $29.99.

Uh-oh, time for the annual Morrowind check

The master list dosen't seem to be correct... I just scored Tekken Tag Tournament from CC for .01, went to check the master list for other old guides, and only saw about 4 guides, and TTT wasn't on there.

The local CC has SMA 4, SSX 3, and lots of other old guides... anyone know if these are pennied as well?

I know if you try going to a gamestop or ebgames and try buying a pennied out item they will refuse the sale

Thats why you dumpster dive

Depends on your GS or EB. Mine will sell/give them to me (then again, I bought alot of stuff from them in the past too). :applause:

CC hasn't pennied out guides in 2 years, maybe longer. Considering how old that guide is it's probably just been hanging around in a store that's not kept up at all.

I checked SSX 3 w/in the last 2 months and it was $8 or $9 still.
have you actually went dumpster diving and found guides?
Yes, yes he has.

Luckily at least one EB employee gives me guides so I haven't had to even consider that yet.
