Here is the most up to date compiled list of all known guide deals listed and posted for this thread and similar threads. I will update this list as people post new guide deals. Everything listed in this thread “should” be the price listed or lower. These prices are typically company wide price reductions and not YMMV. But just because the prices are typically universal does not mean that they are guaranteed to be sold to you. Most stores have a destroy clause with the guide companies. So whether or not you get these guides depend on many many factors from how diligent a staff is to how reasonable or friendly one is. Good luck on any you may find and good luck on acquiring them. If anything is incorrect or missing please post so corrections can be made.


Now you can just cut, paste, print, and GO!!!



How you can help: You can keep a printed copy of this list in your jacket, wallet, purse whatever and when you go to any store that carries guides look for guides for games that have been out typically around six months or more and ask for a price check or better yet use a store scanner if they are available. If they are anything less than cover price write it down for us. Also please when you post the info here if it looks like it’s a temporary sale, please post that as well otherwise it will be assumed to a be a permanent price reduction. If you scan a guide and it comes up a different price that what the master lists suggests please list the day and store that you had the guide scanned. Also please list if you physically saw a self-scanner’s price, physically saw a cash registers price or vocally heard a price from the store’s staff. This might sound like a lot and of course we will take what we can get but this will go a long way to having the best master list as well as ferreting out different store practices and policy’s. All help is appreciated and thank you.




Trading: I spoke with the post office and found out that the cheapest form of mailing to the 48 contiguous states would be to use “media mail” It will take a little longer but it will also allow the least amount of money per transaction when trying to acquire guides for your collection. For an average guide weight of about 9 oz its $1.42 cents. All you need to do is put it in an envelope and ship it media mail. He mentioned no one should have a problem if you use the same envelope several times to cut down on costs. He also mentioned that when shipping Media mail that you cannot have any personal correspondence in the envelope. Only books and an invoice are acceptable. If trading is in you interest you do whatever is most comfortable for you and your trading party this was merely a FYI and a good way to keep it cheap.

Looking for assistance: I am looking for some staff from Best Buy’s, EB’s, Gamestop’s and stores of the like. When EB Games or Gamestop has a price reduction their shelves can be empty in a day or two to even as little as just a few hours. EB and Gamestop have daily price changes so all depending on the store’s staff they could be all gone almost immediately. If I could get some staff that can either post here first thing any day that they have a price reduction on guides or that might be able to text message me with such price reductions so that I might be able to inform CAG’ers ASAP. Whether or not us the end user would actually be able to get them from a particular stores staff is very much an YMMV but if there is anyone who can help this would greatly increase the chance’s of CAG’ers being able to pick up guides from these locations. Its off the website, but I don't remember it being pennied out, but its possible nobody knew (much like Sims 2: University until I found it).
 
I was in BB today and decided to price check Dragon Quest VIII again, hoping for a Presiden't Day drop...but no go. :whistle2:( Ah well, I'll keep trying...

Its still online... here is the online list for Best Buy, once a guide disappears from this list it is usually prime for a penny drop.

i saw a brothers in arms earned in blood guide at one of my local ebgames. i didnt know if it was pennied. decided not to get it. called a lil bit later on asked if they had the guide in stock they said they had none. but i remember seeing two on them of the shelf when i left does that mean they are a penny

it could just be an employee too lazy to check.

Edit: the guide is still on the web site so it is likely a no.

shoulda tried it. I sold my extra copy of baten kaitos for 11 and my 2 extra mp2's for 15 each. Would have been some nice cash to buy some games with, and worth the aggrevation/embarrassment.

I wish I took a picture of this thing I saw at my Best Buys.

The sign was right next to the Guide rack, and it said "Guides ring up for .01 sell for 7.00".

I'm pretty sure they will eventually get into trouble for not selling the guides for the price it rings up.

That's bad for them. Sure, we understand it, but it looks bad to anyone who is unfamiliar with the penny guide thing.
 
I wrote ebgames.com a while ago about being denied penny guides and a DM finally called me today.
He said what the employee should have done was ripped the cover off and given it to me.
He said it was their fault it was still on the floor and that would've been the appropriate response. He also said that selling guides for a penny was grounds for termination there.
So i guess if i try to find guides at my EB(and i guess gamestop too) ill just tell them the DM told me it was ok, but ill only get coverless guides...

Wow. That's actually illegal. Unsold books have their covers removed and returned and are reported to the distributor as "unsold and destroyed". The store disposing of them in any other way besides destruction is considered theft. Not that I don't think it sucks that they trash perfeclty good books, just that I'm astonished someone in authority told you that. I guess it's possible that EB has a differerent relationship with their publisher than every other book seller, but that seems unlikely.

Is it illegal to give them away? Essentially they are considered "bootleg" books once the cover is ripped off, so selling it is definitely illegal, as the publisher has already paid for it. I assume its probably borderline if not illegal, I just don't know the law in that area.

It probably depends on your jurisdiction, I'm only familiar with my state, but I'll bet there's something similar everywhere. Mass market paperbacks are sold with the condition that unsold copies can be sold back to the publisher. The publisher, however, has no interest in further paying to ship these unsold books around so they have the store cut off the cover as proof of the number of copies and destroy the rest. The store is then refunded the wholesale price of a book for each cover returned. Since those books no longer belong to the store (remember the manufacturer buys them back) the store cannot dispose of them in any other way than instructed by the publisher. The publisher also uses the Certificate of Destruction signed by the store for a tax write off on the destroyed merchandise.
It sounds stupid (and it was painful to watch all those boxes of books go into the compactor) but there are sound business reasons for it.

I'm new to these penny guides, so just a quick question and comment... I just called EB, and the guy said you have to get pretty lucky to get a penny guide. He said that they rip the cover off, and hold it until the day is over, then dispose of it. But does BB rip the covers off and dispose of them same day as well? If they do, I won't even bother with this, because it is more hit or miss than my local pawn/thrift stores.

At BB, if i find it on the shelves i can get it.

I would say that it's not illegal but I'm sure it breaks the terms of their contract with the publisher. One would think the publisher would have some sort of penalty clause in the contract and they would attempt collect a fine of some sort.

Well no, it goes beyond that. It would be a violation of the contract to, say, sell their books at a 25% discount when you agreed to a maximum of 10%. When the publisher buys back the unsold books from you, they own them. If you do anything with them at that point, it's theft. You're appropriating physical property that doesn't belong to you. Contract disputes are civil matters about things that wouldn't be illegal outside the context of the contract.
 
On a lighter note I got quite a few guides from Gamecrazy today, so if anyone is interested, please CML. New additions include baten Kaitos, Dark Alliance 2, Advnt Rising, .hack 2, and quite a few others).

only at EB because I didn't see anyone say it was pennied out at Best Buy unless I am mistaken.

I have trouble:hot: with the Gamestops in Fair City Mall (next to old country buffet) and Skyline (in falls church) the one in the mall rings everything up right but wont sell, or give them to me, the manager indian/pakistani guys fault

at skyline they dont scan barcode, they just type the price, is it legal for them to do that? manager had to call someone about the upc codes ringing up as a penny, end results, none from these 2

is there anyway we can get them to sale them?we need to band together for this, because there is a shitload of pennied guides at those gamestops. any CAGs in virginia have any luck with them? ill go with you

btw when do they take out the trash at night? lol

I got them at a GameStop which I usually have had no luck. I wasn't even going there it was connected to a Barnes and Nobles and thought I would check to see if they had guides from the last drop and sure enough they did. They had duplicates but I didn't want to press my luck. I'm sure after I left they probably went thru the guides and pulled them. I'll check in a few days to see.
 
Was out shopping today, went to a Gamestop where a friend works... I never asked him about penny guides before, I didn't want to seem like a leech, but tonight I decided to try my luck. "Penny guides? Yeah, we've got boxes full in the back of the leftover ones". I had an excellent haul today... I didn't grab many doubles because I didn't want to be greedy (alot of the good ones only had 1 anyways).

I found quite a bit at my local Gamecrazy. I'm good friends with most of the staff there because it's my main place for prebooks & new game purchases so I wound up grabbing some multiples for trading purposes.
