Here is the most up to date compiled list of all known guide deals listed and posted for this thread and similar threads. I will update this list as people post new guide deals. Everything listed in this thread “should” be the price listed or lower. These prices are typically company wide price reductions and not YMMV. But just because the prices are typically universal does not mean that they are guaranteed to be sold to you. Most stores have a destroy clause with the guide companies. So whether or not you get these guides depend on many many factors from how diligent a staff is to how reasonable or friendly one is. Good luck on any you may find and good luck on acquiring them. If anything is incorrect or missing please post so corrections can be made.

Now you can just cut, paste, print, and GO!!!

How you can help: You can keep a printed copy of this list in your jacket, wallet, purse whatever and when you go to any store that carries guides look for guides for games that have been out typically around six months or more and ask for a price check or better yet use a store scanner if they are available. If they are anything less than cover price write it down for us. Also please when you post the info here if it looks like it’s a temporary sale, please post that as well otherwise it will be assumed to a be a permanent price reduction. If you scan a guide and it comes up a different price that what the master lists suggests please list the day and store that you had the guide scanned. Also please list if you physically saw a self-scanner’s price, physically saw a cash registers price or vocally heard a price from the store’s staff. This might sound like a lot and of course we will take what we can get but this will go a long way to having the best master list as well as ferreting out different store practices and policy’s. All help is appreciated and thank you.

Trading: I spoke with the post office and found out that the cheapest form of mailing to the 48 contiguous states would be to use “media mail” It will take a little longer but it will also allow the least amount of money per transaction when trying to acquire guides for your collection. For an average guide weight of about 9 oz its $1.42 cents. All you need to do is put it in an envelope and ship it media mail. He mentioned no one should have a problem if you use the same envelope several times to cut down on costs. He also mentioned that when shipping Media mail that you cannot have any personal correspondence in the envelope. Only books and an invoice are acceptable. If trading is in you interest you do whatever is most comfortable for you and your trading party this was merely a FYI and a good way to keep it cheap.

Helpful links to check for reduced priced guides or guides in general. You will likely never find one cent guides here but various discounted guides and possibly some that you have been searching for.

Looking for assistance: I am looking for some staff from Best Buy’s, EB’s, Gamestop’s and stores of the like. When EB Games or Gamestop has a price reduction their shelves can be empty in a day or two to even as little as just a few hours. EB and Gamestop have daily price changes so all depending on the store’s staff they could be all gone almost immediately. If I could get some staff that can either post here first thing any day that they have a price reduction on guides or that might be able to text message me with such price reductions so that I might be able to inform CAG’ers ASAP. Whether or not us the end user would actually be able to get them from a particular stores staff is very much an YMMV but if there is anyone who can help this would greatly increase the chance’s of CAG’ers being able to pick up guides from these locations. If anyone is interested and able to help please e-mail me at [email protected]. Thank you all for your consideration.

Thank you all for making CAG what it is and for all your contributions.

Disclaimer: This list is intended to help all guide hunters. Please feel free to print yourself a copy and get what you can find. Please do not post this list on another site. {e-mail me please if for some reason you would want to. [email protected]} Please just link to this thread, add to this list and help it grow. Thank you

master list in post 2
Gamestop has dropped some(or perhaps all) of it's Doublejump guides to $9.99 if anyone's interested. The 3 pictured in the in-store ad display were Genji, Makai Kingdoms and Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrows but the caption just mentioned Doublejump (so if anyone finds a Disgaea, be sure to check.)

Not quite a penny but I've really been wanting the Castlevania: DoS guide for a while and so was happy to snag one today.
Genji is online, but it doesn't look like any other one is. I am not sure if my stores carry any of these, would anyone be able to pick up some of these for me? I am looking for Castlevania: DoS and Makai Kingdoms. Thanks! ^_^

Your store should... nobody really bit on these when they were $19.99, I've seen all three guides floating around at almost every Gamestop / EB I've been to. I would call and check because your local store probably has them in stock.

I think I'm still the only one who shelled out the full $20 for Dawn of Sorrows guide around here... I only paid $25 for the game too, which really stung, paying almost the same price for the damn guide.

If you can't find one before sunday, I'll pick one or both up for you and you can compensate me when I give 'em to you. I'm heading up there on sunday, so there ya go.

Thank you very much. I'm doing a check tomorrow, so we'll see what happens. ^_^

I was wondering if any of you guys would pay 20+ dollars for guides that are becoming somewhat hard to find and are out of print.

An example is Final Fantasy Anthology, which if I want it will have to pay a little over 20 dollars on Ebay.

And another guide is Lufia & The Fortress of Doom, who Prima and Brady never even made.

I bought this guide last year for 42 dollars. I know I overpaid but I just want your guys take on this.

But the guide I do want now is Anthology.

I wouldn't pay $20 or $40 dollars for information I can easily find on the internet. I only get guides because they are cheap (up to $5 maximum) and I like the pictures and I'm too lazy to surf the net.

But no way would I spend $40 or so dollars on an old guide.

So has Best Buy not done any penny guides yet at all? Seems weird that MK: Shaolin Monks and Ultimate Spider-Man are still full price.

I feel your pain. Exact same situation here. I have beat C: DOS 100% Souls and 100% Map, so it was worth it.

well, I only pay that much for certain guides and also like looking at the different pictures a FF guide has. That is just me though. I know I could look the information up on the net but I don't think its the same.

40 dollars is the most I would ever spend but I feel its more of a collectable and I am trying to collect rare game related stuff.

Someone else must have been on the hunt, because none of the three stores near me had DoS or Makai. They had plenty of Genji though. =P

So if anyone can score me one DoS and one Makai, please let me know. I will gladly pay you back and send you a guide from my list for your trouble. ^___^

My TRU was doing inventory and must have be cleaning out their stockroom cause I saw a lot of old looking guides. I remembered this thread and thinking that I should check it out. I was able to fing The Legend of Zelda: the Wind Waker and The Legend of Zelda Collector's Edition guides for a .01. I also picked up the last copy of Flatout for the XBOX. I only went cause I wanted to stop by a CC that was right next to it.

I was wondering if there was a forum that people show what strategy guides they have and what they are looking for because I here people talk about trading guides all the time but don't know how it actually works.
Bump for possible penny goodness at Best Buy tomorrow (or later in the week). Check out the guide section if you're in there, the usual suspects are : Rainbow six lockdown, Mortal Kombat shaolin monks, Ninja gaiden black, and of course, Halo 2. Of course they didn't drop any guides in December so it may not happen this time either.
Saw all the Halo 2 guides at the store here in bins along with some bins full of a random older PS2 game (I think it was Stuntman) -- there was a sign up that said "Stuntman AND Halo 2 guide $4.99, Today only".

Wasn't interested in either, so I didn't bother to check -- from the sign, it would seem to imply that they were giving the guides away with the game (or overriding the price to $4.99). Might or might not indicate that the guide is now pennied out. YMMV

Damn, good find! I know I won't be as lucky at my store, heh. =P

Also, again: If anyone is able to score an extra Makai Kingdom guide from GS while they are still on sale, let me know. I have an extra Castlevania Dawn of Sorrow or can pay for it. ^_^

New penny drops at GS.

Battalion Wars
Advance Wars Dual Strike
Many of the Versus Guides (most are very old so they probably don't have them)

Nintendo Power Vol. 194, 195, 196, 197, 198 (at least I think 198 was one of them)

Pick em up before it's too late.

Sweet... I don't really care about guides, but pennies are fun. And I actually have both Battalion Wars and AW: DS. I'll be around two GameStops tomorrow, so maybe I'll have some luck.

Ah man! The two Wars games I need guides for! Tomorrow I shop! Let me know if anyone scores any extras, incase I come up empty-handed. Thanks Allout!

I was just there today. Why aren't these things ever posted in the morning? A bunch of times I seem to find out after I had already been there earlier in the day.

I have never gotten up any penny guide at gamestop. The one time I found one they wont sell it to me.

Edit: Is it possible EB will also have them pennied?

Well, looks like I'll have some more things to look for when I'm there tomorrow. My two GS have always been on the ball however. I'll see what they have.

And if they have seconds, I'll pick up an extra one for wannabepunktony

If anyone could score me a Battalion Wars guide, I'd appreciate it.

All of the GS stores out here are huge dicks about penny guides.
Any way we can be more specific than "many of the versus guides"?
All that I can remember in particular on the list are the old pokemon guides, like red/yellow/blue and super mario sunshine. I don't even think the stores get the brand in anymore so if you see it, it will probably most likely be a penny.

That seems to be the consensus for most GS's. I found a Onimusha 3 CE guide out in Seattle this summer and the guy practically had an aneurysm. He actually lectured me that he would sell it to me this one time but not to expect to ever get another one again. Fine by me, idiot, I won't be back for another year.

Oh, wait, I'm not in the stupid customer/employee thread. I'll stop now.:)

There was a period of a few weeks where the local gamestops were problems, they no longer seem to be. They still pull them, but also tend to miss more lately.

Thanks buddy! I'm gonna stop by the B-Ham one tomorrow, and if I pull any extras, you got first dibs. ^_^

Yep, the ones over here scan the guides and say, "$0.01?, there is a glitch in the system" and then proceeds to adjust the price to whatever the sticker states. Too much energy involved to fight about penny guides.

Wow, I've always had EXCELLENT times finding them. Granted, my GS doesn't have many guides to begin with, but one of the employees there sorta knows me, and usually will help me look for them if there is nobody else in the store. Also, somebody else rang up a few for me once, but was saying like "oh, this can't be right", and the helpfull guy told him it was and to give it to me.

Although, last time I was there, they had NO guides whatsoever, so hopefully they just pulled them to make room for other crap for the hollidays, and they will return soon.

If anyone finds copies of the DS Advance Wars and Batallion Wars guides, I would gladly trade or pay for them.

I'm not going to be able to hit the local Gamestop for a few days, so I may miss out on this.

Thanks.

No luck at the first GameStop. I have one more scheduled visit tonight, then will have to think about checking out others. Too bad there aren't pennied at EB, last time I looked for pennies there (Killer 7 and Tales) the guy went in the back to get it for me, knowing it was a penny.

I got saw all (AW Ds, nintendo power, etc)at a GS but something happened i never thought would, the clerk there said

"its company policy that we have to rip the covers off the strategy guides and throw them to the trash, we cant sell them"

So he actually rip all of them and threw them to the trash, hows that?

They send the covers back to the publisher to be reimbursed. That's how books work. Also why places like Borders, B&N, etc will rarely if ever have penny guides out, because its a process they deal with all the time.

Amazing . . . first GS . . . AdvanceWars and Battalion Wars on shelf . . . clerk (a woman who seemed fairly new) let me have them as they rang up 1 cent.

Second GS . . . no guides in sight but then I see them behind the counter and ask if I can have one . . . one clerk gave me the "must be shredded" story in a nerdy voice. But then said it was up to the clerk who I had asked (I was super nice). So I got 2 of each.

Send me a PM with tradelist . . . but not much I'm looking for.

I wonder if in cases where they say they need to tear the covers and throw it away, if we can maybe convince them to tear off the cover, and give us the guide. Really, the cover isn't important, though it is obviously nice to have it with it. A coverless guide is better than no guide at all, yes?

I got one Advance Wars, one Battalion wars, and 5 Counterstrike. The first one I went to was no good, they'd already pulled them probably, but the second one I found and pulled right away. I walked around a bit, chatting with the guy, he knew me so it was all good. Then I brought it up to the register and he scanned both of them; he was acting weird so I knew that he saw the $.01 thing and got worried. He looked through the other guides and I asked if anything was up. he had said that something weird had happened and I accidently said "They came up a penny right?" Anyway, long story short, he extorted me to reserve 2 games before he'd sell them too me. He had said that he wasn't allowed to sell them, but after I reserved the games, he gave me the 5 counterstrikes as well. So yeah, if anyone wants an extra counterstrike, pm me.

I found a stray Battallion Wars at my GS, but the guy wouldn't sell it to me. He said this one was missed, which most mean they had more guides pulled yesterday.

Too bad it's pouring, or I would go back tonight and pull a Pooky. XD

I did exacly that, i told him i would "take out the trash" and he said"only this time", so i got like 5 for free, with no collector value obviously.

I wasn't as subtle.
Me : "Where's the trash at"
Clerk : "Outside in the dumpster"
Me goes out and sees 5 dumpsters
Me goes back inside
Me : "What dumpster in particular?"
Clerk : "The cardboard only dumpster next to the big one"
Me goes to pillage.

That's classic. Strike two at GameStop, ah well. I will continue to be in possession of a sole penny guide (yay Killer 7).

You can add Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones to the list of pennied out guides at GS. Of course my GS tells me they threw this out along with the others yesterday :(

XD

Pooky = the man.

That is great. I would have also done that tonight, but their backdoor was open and a truck was unloading at another door. I'm not going to dive when the dumpster is a foot from GS' door. I need to go out there after hours.

why would anyone dig in the dumpster for guides... if you got some other guides you can just trade in your old guide + 4 bucks for one you want at mcvans..

I actually laughed out loud at that. That is awesome. I'll have to try it some time :)

It's cardboard/paper only, so its not really nasty dumpster diving anyways.

 You need to change your user title to dumpster diver. As long as you don't touch anything wet or sticky it's all good.

It helped that it was a cardboard only dumpster, and most of the guides were in a box for me. I probably got about 50 guides and other random EB goodies, so was worth the dive.

One other that was just pennied out at GS is Baten Kaitos (or was this an old one they just got around to pulling?)

Didn't get one though because the clerk was in the process of ripping the covers off a stack of guides and trashing them (just BK/BW and AW that I saw) when I walked in the door. Such a waste.

Did manage to snag 2 each of Battalion Wars and Advance Wars at another store so have 1 each up for trade - any extra Fire Emblems? BW is near-mint but AW has a bunch of spine cracks that happen when a guide is bent while still on the rack/stand (actually I'd trade for a mint AW too if available.)

I went in to an EB tonight and was looking through the guides. While having him check a couple prices, I noticed a stack of price stickers on the counter - all for guides at $.01.

All $.01 at EB, all the Nintendo Player's Guide:
Advance Wars: Dual Strike
Battalion Wars
Metroid Prime 2: Echoes
Pokemon Emerald Version
Star Fox Assault

If anyone scored an extra Advance Wars: Dual Strike, Batillion Wars, or Fire Emblem, check my list and let me know if you want to trade.
