Here is the most up to date compiled list of all known guide deals listed and posted for this thread and similar threads. I will update this list as people post new guide deals. Everything listed in this thread “should” be the price listed or lower. These prices are typically company wide price reductions and not YMMV. But just because the prices are typically universal does not mean that they are guaranteed to be sold to you. Most stores have a destroy clause with the guide companies. So whether or not you get these guides depend on many many factors from how diligent a staff is to how reasonable or friendly one is. Good luck on any you may find and good luck on acquiring them. If anything is incorrect or missing please post so corrections can be made.

Now you can just cut, paste, print, and GO!!!

How you can help: You can keep a printed copy of this list in your jacket, wallet, purse whatever and when you go to any store that carries guides look for guides for games that have been out typically around six months or more and ask for a price check or better yet use a store scanner if they are available. If they are anything less than cover price write it down for us. Also please when you post the info here if it looks like it’s a temporary sale, please post that as well otherwise it will be assumed to a be a permanent price reduction. If you scan a guide and it comes up a different price that what the master lists suggests please list the day and store that you had the guide scanned. Also please list if you physically saw a self-scanner’s price, physically saw a cash registers price or vocally heard a price from the store’s staff. This might sound like a lot and of course we will take what we can get but this will go a long way to having the best master list as well as ferreting out different store practices and policy’s. All help is appreciated and thank you.

Trading: I spoke with the post office and found out that the cheapest form of mailing to the 48 contiguous states would be to use “media mail” It will take a little longer but it will also allow the least amount of money per transaction when trying to acquire guides for your collection. For an average guide weight of about 9 oz its $1.42 cents. All you need to do is put it in an envelope and ship it media mail. He mentioned no one should have a problem if you use the same envelope several times to cut down on costs. He also mentioned that when shipping Media mail that you cannot have any personal correspondence in the envelope. Only books and an invoice are acceptable. If trading is in you interest you do whatever is most comfortable for you and your trading party this was merely a FYI and a good way to keep it cheap.

Helpful links to check for reduced priced guides or guides in general. You will likely never find one cent guides here but various discounted guides and possibly some that you have been searching for.

Looking for assistance: I am looking for some staff from Best Buy’s, EB’s, Gamestop’s and stores of the like. When EB Games or Gamestop has a price reduction their shelves can be empty in a day or two to even as little as just a few hours. EB and Gamestop have daily price changes so all depending on the store’s staff they could be all gone almost immediately. If I could get some staff that can either post here first thing any day that they have a price reduction on guides or that might be able to text message me with such price reductions so that I might be able to inform CAG’ers ASAP. Whether or not us the end user would actually be able to get them from a particular stores staff is very much an YMMV but if there is anyone who can help this would greatly increase the chance’s of CAG’ers being able to pick up guides from these locations. If anyone is interested and able to help please e-mail me at [email protected]. Thank you all for your consideration.

Thank you all for making CAG what it is and for all your contributions.

Disclaimer: This list is intended to help all guide hunters. Please feel free to print yourself a copy and get what you can find. Please do not post this list on another site. {e-mail me please if for some reason you would want to. [email protected]} Please just link to this thread, add to this list and help it grow. Thank you

master list in post 2

I was able to pick up a few guides at my local EBgames, but only after a little trouble. I went in, found the guides (AWDS and MP2 Echoes) real quick, and asked the guy there to check the price. He pointed to the price on the back and started talking on the phone (to his mom I believe). After he was done talking, I told him that these are probably on clearence and he said they were not. After asking him for about the fifth time for him to scan them, I asked to just buy them at whatever price. He scanned them and they came up as a penny. He was shocked and then acted as though I was a criminal. He started asking how I knew and then refused to sell me the guides. He then said that I could either buy each of the guides for $20 or I could leave the store. I left pissed off and did some other shopping. I came back about two hours later and the jerk was gone. I saw another guy there and picked up the guides again and had no problem. They had a lot of other guides there as well and I will try and pick them up later to give you guys.

BTW, I was really offended by how that guy acted. You think if I contact EBgames and complain that they will do something about him?

Nope, because he's not supposed to sell the guides at all, he was just following company policy, which is the exact excuse they'll give you.

The best part of all that is that two hours later, the guides were still there. I think I might stop by EB and give it a shot.
Nope, because he's not supposed to sell the guides at all, he was just following company policy, which is the exact excuse they'll give you.
Yeah, I guess you are right. The guy just really pissed me off.

BTW, I will try and get you a AWDS guide. If I happen to find one and they sell it to me, I will PM you.
ananag112 - which EB was this? I live close to you.
The Garden State Plaza one. The downstairs EBgames. I think the top EBgames has a few guides left as well.
I went in to an EB tonight and was looking through the guides. While having him check a couple prices, I noticed a stack of price stickers on the counter - all for guides at $.01.

All $.01 at EB, all the Nintendo Player's Guide:
Advance Wars: Dual Strike
Battalion Wars
Metroid Prime 2: Echoes
Pokemon Emerald Version
Star Fox Assault
Anyone know if there is anything else dropping at EB, such as Fire Emblem: SS? ^___^
Yeah, I guess you are right. The guy just really pissed me off.

Yea, I know what it's like for that to happen... something similar happened to me.

Thanks a ton, I really appreciate it.
The Garden State Plaza one. The downstairs EBgames. I think the top EBgames has a few guides left as well.
Funny. I go to that EB all the time and I've had problems downstairs as well. Not just with guides but with trade-ins as well (trading in multiples). The one upstairs has always been great about that, however. That mall is also too damn packed.
Anyone know if there is anything else dropping at EB, such as Fire Emblem: SS? ^___^
it is 1 cent. However I tried minish cap and Baten Katios are at full price.

My EB tossed the guides last week. =\ If anyone has any extras from the EB/GS lists, let me know. Unlike other times, are few of these guides are ones I would actually pay more than a penny for in real life, heh. ;P

does anybody know when EB would toss their guides?? Do they toss some every week, every few weeks???

Anybody really know??

I think it entirely depends on the EB. Of the few I visited over the last few days (some EB, some GS):

One EB had already removed the guides from the inventory system, but purposefully left the guides on the shelf for the first person to ask. I took them home with me - wasn't charged for them.
One EB had tossed them the day the prices dropped. They were in the garbage in the back under some not so dry stuff, and I didn't ask the employee to try to salvage them. Said if I saw any penny guides, I could take them.
One EB only had a couple guides, all of which were new and full price.
One EB was rude, and when I asked for the price, after some mutterings between employees, told me they were all 14.99, and then promptly hid them all behind the counter after I said I didn't want them for that price.
One EB rang up each guide for a penny and I paid $.06.
One EB was shocked they had dropped and just told me I could take them without ringing them up in the system.
One GS tossed them the day they dropped.
One GS had nothing.
saw a Battalation Wars guide but didnt bother with it - no GBA here, and the store it was in always gives me a hassle.
That's a GC game ;)
Anyone have an extra Advance Wars: Dual Strike? I'll do $5 or $6 shipped on it.

Same with Fire Emblem: Sacred Stones.
Your PM box is full. I have an extra Advance Wars DS guide. Send me a PM.

I know there are a ton of CAG's here in the Tampa Bay area... anyone around here had any luck? I'm batting like 0 for 20 so far. The EB where my friend works already pulled them unfortunately, same with the local GS. Another CAG around Brandon checked a ton of EB / GS's for me, with no luck either.

My gf is in Port Richey right now, checking there, not sure how much luck she'll have though.

is Fire emblem being pennied out somewhere? i saw it at my GS but didn't bother to get it.. but if it's pennied.. then i'll be there :)

This sucks, my girlfriend found two copies of Advance Wars: Dual Strike, and the fucking cashier at EB manually raised the price back up to $14.99, that he was "instructed to do this if it ever came up".

You fucker, you had THREE DAYS to pull all these fucking guides, that is just extremely lazy. He didn't even tell her they were .01 cent, he just quickly raised the price up before she saw, but since she knew she said something.

I really really hate when EB / GS drop penny guides, because they act like the damn gestapo when it comes to them. If you miss a guide, a customer buys it, you should just honor your damn mistake, espically three days after the fact.

Not penny guides, but found some guides at Goodwill today:

All Brady guides

Kingdom Hearts (no poster)
Resident Evil (the GC rerelease) w poster intact
FF X (w poster intact)
FF X-2 (no poster)
FF Origins
Xenosaga
Wind Waker (w poster intact)

Nice haul . . . most are very cool Signature Series guides. .59 each

Also picked up a few old gaming mags (Gamepro 2001, Game Informer 1996, Lamepro 1994) which are so cool to look at

Genji is now officially a penny at gamestop.

In other news, if you find a Taiko Drum (drum only, not the game+controller), it too has dropped to a penny.

Enjoy!

Listen all Cheap Ass Bastards,
You will not be able to pull the stupid Guide for a Penny trick at any EB Games-GameStop store anymore because the only guides that will be on the floor are going to be the top 9-10 guides everything else will be in the back room.

Not necessarily... the one time I've gotten a penny guide it went like this (at EB):

"Hi, do you have the Killer 7 or Tales of Symphonia guides?"
"Let me check" :goes into the back room:
:emerges: I've got a Killer 7, and I think you're going to be pleasantly surprised."
"Oh yeah?"
"Don't bother with the penny, have a nice day."

All depends on the employee.

That is not an employee, that is a retard causing his company loss of money, and does not even tell the customer anything about trade-ins or try to sell a discount card or a pre-order, something to justify his pay check.

Actually, I'd call that a model EB Games employee who knows that a satisfied customer is usually a good customer.

EB web site is showing Genji guide for $14.99, so I am gussing the price are not the same at EB and gamestop.

Edit: Gamestop website has genji guide for $9.99

Have we determined that EB & GS are pennying out the same guides now? Because I'd love to get my hands on a Genji guide, but the GS's around here are always a no-go for me.

I don't think the Genji guide is a penny since it was just reduced to $9.99 like last week. I'd like to be wrong though :)

Let me guess...you work for EB or GameStop, you're probably an assistant manager or 3rd key (or you REALLY want to be) and you REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, REALLY love your job and believe that it's much more important than it actually is. CAG's will always be on the lookout for .01 guides, not just because we're smart enough not to pay full price, but also because the guide publishers are screwing customers by charging $17-20 per guide. If they would sell them for reasonable prices the increased quantity they would sell would result in increased profits. Don't believe me? Look at the bradygames.com sale thread and look at how many guides they sold just to CAG's alone. Personally, at this point I'm not giving merit to anything you post anymore.

But since they just throw the guides away after they turn a penny, and I am sure there is something involving the distrubtor here too, they are losing money how?

If I am not mistaken, they get credited the amount that they paid for the guide provided they do not sell the guide any longer. That is why they mark it to a penny or just give it to you.

I went to 3 eb's today and got 10 guides, and in the 5 gamestops I was in I got 4 guides (including street fighter anniversary and xenosaga 2 limited). Seriously though, if you don't like this then what are you doing on this site anyway?

Well, of course they lose money because bastards like you wait to get it free and won't buy it, because stupid employees will give it free so the cycle will prevent thousands of people from buying the guide when it's out because they know they will get it free when it's a penny.

Bastards like you cause good customers to pay more for their guides because your whole penny routine increases the prices because you never spend the money on the guides.

And to the guy from the earlier post, I am not an Assistant or a 3rd Key I am a Store Manager, and the trend of having more then 9-10 guides on the floor will be stopped in the next 2 months.

I just bought the Shining Force Neo guide, from my local EB no less, for full price a week ago. So there goes that theory.

I'm sure glad you're not the manager of my EB tho, because with an attitude like that you'd lose more than just strategy guide sales from me.

Why am I having such a hard time believing that a, OMG Store Manager, can be classified as a "RICHASSGAMER"?

I mean you guys make high 30's to mid 40's at best. To me that qualifies as barely surviving.

However if you grew up in a trailer park, as I suspect you did given your measure of rich, I suppose you're doing very well indeed.

This site chews up and spits out complainers like you. It's not our fault we're able to take advantage of inventory glitches like this. If lazy asses like you and your worthless DM's wanted to put a stop to it so badly you'd crack down on it and eliminate our ability to take advantage of it.

Just like a worthless Store Manager you blame the consumer for buying cheap instead of full price. Hello, Brainiac? The name of this site is cheapassgamer.com, not PLEASERAPEUSONHIGHPRICESGAMER.COM.

SEEEEEEE YAAAAAAH!

I believe its a little late to start your campaign for CAG villian of the year. Are you getting started early on next year?

I can confirm the Genji guide is a penny at GS, though my GS already threw them out yesterday. Can anyone confirm if they are a penny at EB?
