Here is the most up to date compiled list of all known guide deals listed and posted for this thread and similar threads. I will update this list as people post new guide deals. Everything listed in this thread “should” be the price listed or lower. These prices are typically company wide price reductions and not YMMV. But just because the prices are typically universal does not mean that they are guaranteed to be sold to you. Most stores have a destroy clause with the guide companies. So whether or not you get these guides depend on many many factors from how diligent a staff is to how reasonable or friendly one is. Good luck on any you may find and good luck on acquiring them. If anything is incorrect or missing please post so corrections can be made.


Now you can just cut, paste, print, and GO!!!



How you can help: You can keep a printed copy of this list in your jacket, wallet, purse whatever and when you go to any store that carries guides look for guides for games that have been out typically around six months or more and ask for a price check or better yet use a store scanner if they are available. If they are anything less than cover price write it down for us. Also please when you post the info here if it looks like it’s a temporary sale, please post that as well otherwise it will be assumed to a be a permanent price reduction. If you scan a guide and it comes up a different price that what the master lists suggests please list the day and store that you had the guide scanned. Also please list if you physically saw a self-scanner’s price, physically saw a cash registers price or vocally heard a price from the store’s staff. This might sound like a lot and of course we will take what we can get but this will go a long way to having the best master list as well as ferreting out different store practices and policy’s. All help is appreciated and thank you.




Trading: I spoke with the post office and found out that the cheapest form of mailing to the 48 contiguous states would be to use “media mail” It will take a little longer but it will also allow the least amount of money per transaction when trying to acquire guides for your collection. For an average guide weight of about 9 oz its $1.42 cents. All you need to do is put it in an envelope and ship it media mail. He mentioned no one should have a problem if you use the same envelope several times to cut down on costs. He also mentioned that when shipping Media mail that you cannot have any personal correspondence in the envelope. Only books and an invoice are acceptable. If trading is in you interest you do whatever is most comfortable for you and your trading party this was merely a FYI and a good way to keep it cheap.

Looking for assistance: I am looking for some staff from Best Buy’s, EB’s, Gamestop’s and stores of the like. When EB Games or Gamestop has a price reduction their shelves can be empty in a day or two to even as little as just a few hours. EB and Gamestop have daily price changes so all depending on the store’s staff they could be all gone almost immediately. If I could get some staff that can either post here first thing any day that they have a price reduction on guides or that might be able to text message me with such price reductions so that I might be able to inform CAG’ers ASAP. Whether or not us the end user would actually be able to get them from a particular stores staff is very much an YMMV but if there is anyone who can help this would greatly increase the chance’s of CAG’ers being able to pick up guides from these locations. If you guys see it, I recommend picking up the Half-Life 2 book. I actually paid full price for it. It has a lot of neat stuff that they had to cut out. On paga 177, it has a map of Gordon's travels in an early version of the game. It looks like the there was alot more traveling. There are also a few pages of the script at different stages.

I checked the Maplecrest GS and none of these were to be seen.

Unfortunately, the lackeys behind the counter wouldn't let me have ANY of them, despite the fact that I was ready to buy three games along with them. Should have raised hell about it, but I just told them to cancel the whole transaction and walked out.

Just another reason to hate Gamestop.

While it's ok for GS / EB to refuse to sell them (they are just doing their job, after all), I believe that if they are too lazy / miss any penny guides and they are on the floor for sale, they need to honor that and just go ahead and sell them.

One of the places I got a guide from did exactly that, said he missed one, it's his mistake, and that I can just go ahead and take it for free.
 
did the Halo 2 guide pennied out somewhere? they are selling for about $3 new on half.com and $2 on amazon.com
 
i just ran out to Gamestop 10 mins before they closed - and they had a pile on the front desk, but they wouldnt give me any. What a waste
 
My local EB have tons of penny guides but they refuse to sell it cuz they'll get FIRE if they sell it to me. Atleast they give me Genji & Makai Kingdom for FREE (they told me these guides getting hard to find and let me have it instead Dump them all in the trash).

Oh well, its all good ;)

I picked up the Tekken 5 guide and the HL2: Raising the Bar hardcover book, a 35$ book for a penny.

And yeah, my EB store doesn't sell the pennied out guides to any customers either, just us employees are allowed to grab them.
 
I left my house about an hour before todays drop was posted. I saw a bunch of those guides, but luckily there isn't much I really want there. I'd like the star wars guides, jade empire or the LOTR one, but it's no biggie.

A rather suprising find today was a pennied out paper mario the thousand year door at gamestop. It's one I've visited many times and I know it hasn't been there for a long time. Must have been found in the back room somewhere. I'm still looking for a sigma star (5 gamestops today even checked their back rooms and they didn't have them). Got most of the current drops (excluding todays). The only real desirable one I don't have for trade is makai kingdom. Paper mario thousand year door guide is also available for trade for sigma star.
 
Went to EB at my local mall. The employees were really friendly and gave me Genji, Silent Hill 4, Advance Wars: Dual Strike, Baten Kaitos, Star Fox: Assault, and Metroid Prime 2. Silent Hill guide for trade, if anyone wants it.

I feel crazy even offering that for a penny guide, that's a ton of profit for someone... but I'd really like the book, and I would pay that much in gas anyways driving all over creation trying to find it.
 
Has anyone been able to confirm any of these recent GS drops at EB (besides the HL2 artbook)? I checked some on Friday (Sigma Star Saga, Urban Reign) and they were still full price at EB.

I went to a gamestop today, and grabbed like 10-15 guides. They all rang up for $.01. Then the sale's clerk was like i have to enter these into my computer for $.01. Then he said he has to destroy them or something, then the other sale's clerk was like "Basiclly we have to rip the cover off. I was like wtf, and just left. Has anyone else had any problems? Or are they supposed to enter the guides into the computer and due whatever. This was my first time getting guides. I hope someone can help me out, thanks

At one EB - the cashier zero'd them out in their inventory before giving them to me.
 
one eb will only give me guides after ripping out the cover. I dont have a problem with that since it is only 1 cent.
 
There are a lot of other recent pennied out GS guides that have not been listed. I can confirm this because the GS I went to today had them stacked up by the garbage and would only let me have 2 of them before tossing the rest (I took Quake 4 and Oddworld:Stranger's Wrath). I can remember seeing these:

Conker: Live And Reloaded
Dynasty Warriors 5
Mercenaries (maybe this was mentioned)
about 5-6 others that I can't remember offhand

Does anyone have the full complete list? As you can imagine I was thrilled that they threw these out :(

I don't use most of my guides, I tend to collect them like sports cards. I want certain ones cause I have the game, like the game, series, or I like the way they look. I'd take them under those conditions, but mainly because if I return another time they may be more lenient.

Yeah, they seem to have pulled a bunch of guides from the site that were in stock earlier in the week. In addition to the ones you listed I no longer see Shadow of the Colossus and the two Pokemon Emerald guides. In fact, I believe the number of listed guides dropped from 47 to 30, though I could be wrong (going off memory). Maybe this Monday they'll be pennied out?

That would be amazing, since I know of a Best Buy that is so behind the times I can still get penny guides from the last TWO drops there.

Wow, after shipping it's almost $8 per book on the regular guides. Was interested in one or two guides but not for $7.25 per book, that shipping charge is painful.
 
I plan on checking EB tomorrow on my lunch break. I feel pretty confident I can at least get the HL art book (and will try to get extras, for anyone looking to trade for it) and I'll check some of the other GS drops as well. Here's hoping!
 
I'm almost certain the Halo 2 guide has been pennied out somewhere...look at ebay, there are a bunch of sellers with multiple copies of the guide, listing them for 3 and 4 dollars each. Its gotta be Best Buy, right?
