Aegis Wing - FREE XBLA GAME

This is great news. XBLA definitely needs more shmups. I'm surprised that not a lot of Japanese devs have jumped on XBLA to releases old school shmups -- it's the perfect platform for it.

Fun little game. Short and not very deep, but a great value ;).

I was able to snag the 24th spot on the Leaderboard after just a couple hours playing. You can "beat" the game pretty easily. That Ace achievement is going to be pretty tough though. I finished with about 167,000 and you need 185,000 for that. I don't think the number 1 guy had quite that much even.

I haven't tried the multiplayer yet, but that looks interesting. Now that I'm a "pro" I'm up for some multiplayer action (have yet to try anything online yet). But for now, bed!

I was surprised at how quickly this downloaded, I thought the server would be awful with Halo 3, but I jumped in the shower and it was done when I got out.

Only played to the first boss thing before I had to go to work, It does feel like Gradius, but your ship has a shield, that protects against bullets, but not so much being rammed by an enemy ship. I have a feeling the locking ships together thing is a big part of it, and single player seems to be pretty mediocre without it. (I didn't play the multiplayer yet).

My only other complaint is that the special weapons seem to be really common. I could barely use up mine before I found another.

But, for free, thumbs up.

I'm excited to download this when I get home from work tonight. I love shooters, so this could have been a purchase. Just wondering though, is this the only game being released on today (5-16-07)? Wasn't sure with all the bomberman talk if that was out today, but the topic seems to have died (and I have to imagine it would be buzzing if it was released today).

Solitaire is out today I believe.

Pretty cool game. Feels like this game I made in high school programming class, but a lot more technical with 3D backgrounds and more intricate enemy patterns. The music's cool, too.

It's pretty decent.

I don't like how everything looks the same, and how everything gets lost amongst everything else.

Hey, you get what you pay for.

On that note, it a decent shump for what it's worth. I've only unlocked one achievement so fa, but I am rusty when it comes to shumps.
I enjoyed it and I like the fact that it is easier than most others that I've played because I've actually managed to beat this game.
BINGO! I feel the same way. There's no way no how never in my lifetime I was going to ever beat any normal shmup. This one I beat in about 1 hour. The first time I had to continue several times. Then last night before I went to bed I played through the whole thing without having to continue (to get a high score - came up just short of the "Ace" level). I can actually try the "insane" mode now and see if I can snag that achievement, which is something I'd never even dream of in any other shmup.

Although I have to admit, the bosses are pretty easy once you figure out their patterns, which can usually be done on the first try (if you have an extra life or two).

I tried for the "no shooting" achievement last night but that clearly doesn't work on the first level (because it never ends unless you shoot the last boss). It might work on the second level though...

Later today I can try the multiplayer with my son. I've definitely gotten my money's worth out of this ;).

I actually didn't find it that easy on solo, but then I jumped into a multiplayer game with two other guys and we ended up beating the game. You should definitely check out the multiplayer io, teaming up with other ships is the way to go!

4 player is fun as hell. Even more so when everyone is screaming and stuff. Played for nearly 2 hours with the same group of people, never got boring.
Got like 80 achievement points really quickly. The others wont be as easy...
Yeah, I don't get the "Untouchable" vs "Immortal" achievements. I did Untouchable (not taking damage on a level) yet I did not get Immortal (not dying on a level). It seems like you should get Immortal automatically when getting Untouchable.

The tough ones will be "Ace" and whatever the one is called where you destroy every enemy - but maybe the latter is easier in multiplayer (if it counts there).

I played 3 player local multiplayer tonight for about 2 hours with my bf and my brother.. it was really fun!!
forming the ships together is really awesome!

2 more achievements to go :)

The only real hard achievement seems to be killing every enemy on stage :\ and prolly beating it on insane.

Real fun game but my wife was using so many continues I didn't finish the last stage. lmao.
with 4 players beating every enemy is reeaaallly easy.
Agrees, I did it on 3 players and we got it really easy.
Also, if you want to get the Diplomat achievement.. in multiplayer.. join ships..and just don't shoot.. LOL let the others shoot and you'll get it at the end of each level.

I just gotta beat legend and score 185,000 points. HOW do you score that much ?!

How are you people getting the "Immortal" one? I played through a level without getting hit once (and, obviously, without dying) and got the "Untouchable" but not "Immortal".

I figured the one where you get every enemy would be easier in multiplayer. It is damn hard single-player though.

Well I tried the single player, and it was very hard, and I didn't have much fun. I then went on XBOX Live with it, and boy is it a difference. One of the best XBLA games I have played in a while, and it was FREE. Anyone doubting the game you must play it online with 3 or 4 other people.

I'm not sure what happened in the multiplayer game I played, but it was only two levels and we beat the game. Maybe we started mid-level ala the unlockable thing? I dunno. Got a couple of the achievements, but ya, the 4 combined ships were pretty invincible. People kept shouting "Get off of me" though when I linked to them. Weak.

I don't like the game. Single player is boring and cheap; it's hard to keep your eye on incoming enemy projecties when low-resolution 3d models are running around the background, and it's way, way, way over reliant on sub weapons since the primary gun is all but useless.

Multiplayer was chaotic, and I had no idea what was going on. Plus, the whole linking thing is useful, if Xbox Live users weren't their typical team-work-hating selves. 50% of the time I linked with someone, they'd crash into something on purpose to kill me. I never actually witnessed all four ships linked; I'd always get to three and one guy would again, refuse to work together.

Not bad for free, and maybe it'll be more fun in local multiplayer, but I can't see myself playing it but maybe one or two more times for some achievements.

Its not bad, especially for free. Its pretty fun in multiplayer. It is a bit short, I couldnt see myself actually buying it for $10 though.

As for the 185k, I've met some guys who were close, around the 160~170k mark. I cant remember exactly, but the big points are obviously the larger ships, and killing a boss will get you 20k by itself. Also, you dont lose points when you die, but when you need to "get more credits" when you need your partner to pick your broken ship up.

If you want to get "Immortal" achievement, you have to do it in Multiplayer (4 players do not get killed in one stage)

I really enjoyed this game. I got all of the achievements but one, (the 185,000) on a couple of playthroughs. Really easy and fun if you get a cooperative group of people to play with.

Yeah, I played with my son and got it no problem (just 2 players works). I got him most of the other achievements too just by having him link with me. My experience of playing it myself the night before made the multiplayer *extremely* easy. The only thing he got that I didn't was the "10,000 while linked score" - I guess I'll have to play as him and him as me and I can get it that way ;).

It felt kind of cheap to have the achievements be so easy in multiplayer when I got a lot of them in single player before . The 100,000 and take no damage ones are tougher single player. I couldn't do the no shooting one, though I came close and it, of course, is a breeze multiplayer! Try that single player where you aren't shooting any ships down and have to dodge all the resulting incoming fire (I figured it was like the "Pacifist" achievement in Geometry Wars). Problem is, I think every level has a boss that you have to get through so it won't even work.

As for the 185,000, I'd think you might have to do that in single player (so you aren't sharing points). I got through to the end and got 167,000 or so (was ranked 24th there for a while). It would just be a matter of doing that and taking down more ships along the way, but I think it will be pretty hard.

I haven't tried insane mode yet, but considering that it lets you use continues I can't see that being impossible.

That's how I felt about single-player. I guess I'll be trying multiplayer on June 11 (after h3 beta).

UGH this 185,000 is a fuckin' whore!
I just beat the game (normal) and got 168,000 (Io is on my friends list, and I just beat his score. im the number 1 on my friends list right now! bwhahaha!)

Do you get more points for playing on Insane?

You barely beat it

I'll have to play it again tonight and outdo that ;).

Edit - HA, it took me a few tries, but I beat it (182,xxx). But DAMN, I came up just 2500 points or so short of the Ace achievement . I'll have to try again tomorrow. A little tip - make sure you pick up every powerup even if it is one of
the less useful ones as they seem to provide points (except during the boss battles which is good as you could milk those for unlimited points if so).

As for insane mode, I'm sure you get more points as there are more enemies you have to kill just to survive. But the lack of extra lives would make getting to the end of that without a continue *very* difficult. On the other hand, you might be able to rack up enough points in multiplayer in that mode. It seemed my son and I got quite a few points out of the first 4 levels before we died - more than I got in single player normal mode, I think, at that point.

Got it done Friday night. This is the first game I've managed to snag all the achievements on (I think it was farily easy on this game even compared to other XBLA games). I got 187,XXX - good enough for 185th as of late Friday night.

But man, the top scores are truly insane - 266,000 or so!! Of course, they were done in "insane" mode - you can't get nearly that many points in normal I think.

Like I said before, just shoot everything you can. I died on the last level 3 times before I was able to finish (had to start all over of course) because I kept taking risks trying to shoot as much as I could. Grab EVERY powerup (fire off all your homing missiles if you have to beforehand). Try to hit the mines with the laser whenever you have it (for points you can't otherwise get). That's about it - not TOO difficult if I can do it ;).

I got a game over on the 2nd to last level playing a 4-player co-op game. The god damn guy driving the 4 player ship rammed us into a few too many rocks. Idiot.

The last level I absolutely kicked the game's ass. Everyone else was out of continues or whatever, and I was at full 4 lives. Dodging the final enemies beams and shots left and right (as one enthusiastic ally put it "Blue's got shakes" whatever that means). Years of Gradius paying off I says.

Either way, whooped the final boss with all my lives left, but unfortunately the previous level destroyed my score.

Managed to get all the achivements except the high score one. Read the best method was to do 2 players offline on insane mode, have the other attached and do all the work. Almost got the high score that way... then I died :\ Damn insane mode!
