Ok... let me break it down for everyone.
EB has had these used PC games for years, at this point. IIRC, they stopped taking in used PC games sometime last year, so these games have rotted on the shelf, taking up valuable shelf space. Some EB's I went to had whole sections devoted to nothing but used PC games, now they are using that section for product that actually sells.
EB already clearanced these games out.... MANY of these PC games were anywhere from 99 cents - $9.99, with a large majority of them being 99 cents - $2.99. Go dig up my old thread to see just how many PC games were on clearance at some amazing (imo) prices.
Nobody still bought the games then... at this point, EB has already taken a loss on the games since they've sat there since the dawn of time, and they would continue to sit there even longer, taking up extremely valuable shelf space. Yea, it sucks they are just throwing them away, but it's honestly a waste of manpower to ring up 50 one cent items, and it would create havoc if they just place a giant "free" sign on the games, as the average customer is too stupid to be able to handle something like that.
I wish there was a better way, but honestly, for EB, they've tried EVERYTHING in their power to get rid of this shit... I even remember when they did 70% off all used PC games at one point, and that barely made a dent in the stores around here.
EB has already wrote all these games off as a loss, so yea, they are losing absolutely nothing by just throwing them all away... they aren't going to make their money back as it is.
The reality is that if they would spend 5 minutes doing some sort of imaginative marketing, they would have come up with a better idea. This is just plain laziness on their part. One good option would have been to give out one free game to anyone who purchased a new PC game. They could either do a marketing promo and let people choose a game, or just keep them behind the counter and give them out at random with each order. Even doing the latter, they would create enough customer good will and confidence that it would be worth much more than selling them even at 50% off. It's not all about dollars and cents in the business world. The reason that GameStop doesn't care in doing anything like this is because they have no competition. Why spend time doing creative marketing when people are going to go to the only dedicated game store in town anyway.
