Hey CAGS,

I’ve got some news I’m both excited and sad to share with you at the same time. I’ll be leaving the Digital Video Games team in Mid-March to join the marketing team for Amazon.com’s Loyalty and Rewards program, Amazon Coins. My boss and I have talked extensively about how to maintain and continue our presence here and across the other communities we’ve created in the past couple of years. To that end I’d like to introduce you to Josh, who take over monitoring, updating, and responding to this thread. Josh will be ramping up over the next couple of weeks, he  will be posting shortly to introduce himself.

Now that the “what’s going on” part of the message is out of the way I want to tell you all how much I love CAG and the posters here. This was the first community I joined when I started this job (anyone still remember that first thread?) and all of you have had a huge hand in shaping how we think about and execute Community Development and Management here at Amazon, which has in turn shaped my career these last two and a half years.

I started to write out a section calling out the regular posters and realized the list would be both overly long and incomplete at the same time. Instead I’d like to thank you all again, you all have my deep and sincere gratitude. I’ll still be around and my gaming accounts aren’t going anywhere so feel free to hit me up anytime you want to chat. I’ll probably still hang out in the thread too :).

Thanks again everyone, let me or Josh know if you have any questions!

The Indie Store has launched!
Amazon.com is launching a storefront dedicated to supporting and promoting PC/Mac/Web-based Indie Games. Our Digital Video Games team is a small group of passionate gamers and we’re all really excited to help Indie developers reach more customers quickly by providing a quick and simple process for bringing their games to market. Additionally we’ll be supporting the Indie Store with a ton of promotions, both at and after launch. Many of these promotions are designed to give the developer the opportunity to maximize their revenue. For example, Amazon is forfeiting all royalties from bundle sales and passing them along directly to the developer, we’ve also created an “Indie Spotlight” program to help customers learn more about the games and developers they love. We view the Indie developers as some of the most creative in the industry and we want to help them continue to create new and innovative experience for customers.

Why we are doing this:

  • Allow customers to discover an entirely new category of games on Amazon.com
  • Help developers reach new customers quickly. Our onboarding process is straightforward and we want to sell every Indie game available
  • We want to leverage our strengths to support and help the developers who are driving forward innovation and creativity in the games industry
General Information

Hi CAGs,
I'll be posting deals we're running on Digital Games (PC/Mac, Free to Play, Sony/Microsoft Points/Subs).

I'm also here to answer questions you might have, get you closer to the developers by hosting Q&As, setting up podcasts, live streaming gameplay etc. If I don't respond to a question you have in thread please send me a PM. These ping my email address and make it more likely that I will see your question and respond more quickly.

Cheers,
Tony

FYI. EA Games sold by Amazon will not activate on Steam.
F.A.Q.S.:

1. Does the game I'm buying from Amazon Activate on Steam/Origin/Uplay? What DRM does the game use?

There are two places to identify DRM on a digital video game detail page:

At the top of the page, below the title:

16hm7a8.png

In the "Product Description" section:

2. Note on Electronic Arts Games - For the most part, EA games sold on Amazon do not activate on Steam. Most activate on Origin.

3. Note on DRM with limited activations:

Our Policy

4. Sometimes I'll do giveaways.

5. I work with developers and publishers to get fun (or at least what I think is fun) content to share with you all. Here are some examples:

a. Check out the Pax Gameplay videos here: Xcom: Enemy Unknown I played Xcom with Jake, the Creative Director for the game, a few months before the game came out Also, on this page, check out the Q&A, also a community driven event.

b. Check out the interview on this page: Borderlands 2 we did this interview at E3 with Randy Pitchford this year.

c. We've partnered with the ++GoodGames Podcast to feature many of the games we carry. They talk to the developers about the game development process, how the games are conceptualized and managed, all kinds of fun stuff. I'm working on putting together full link list and will update when I have it.

What else do we sell?

Tony any chance of a Ticket To Ride complete bundle or a DLC bundle for a good price in the near future? Maybe complete for like 4 or 5 bucks for complete or DLC bundle for 3.50ish or 4? If not in February maybe?
Second on a Ticket to Ride bundle, Ticket to Ride complete for $7-$8 pre-coupon would be great, or just a normal sale with the dlc for 99 cents each would be decent too.

You are going to need both... Or the alternative is to hang yourself upside down and shake aggressively. Either way, we will know what these BW are up to in no time!
Ok well i only have the bathroom mirror, no handheld one. How does this hanging myself upside down work? Do i need help from somebody to hold me upside down? or do i just tie my feet to the ceiling?

This is a full grown butt worm. They haven't told you that this is what will happen. Get rid of them while you still can!
I'm a little bit frightened now. Maybe i should have gone to see a Dr. a couple years ago when my mother suggested it. I just thought that everybody had them.

You could always break the mirror in half, I heard it brings good luck for 7-10 years or something. But the best solution is probably tie your feet to a ceiling fan, as it will allow you to hang upside down while doing most of the shaking for you. Plus you score an awesome carousel ride.

Ok I'm down to do the ceiling fan thing. What should i be looking for, or what should happen? A little confused on that part.

Ok I have kind of an embarrassing confession to make. I dont really have butt worms. I was just trying to fit in with the cool kids.

I believe what he was trying to say was that the buttworms have grown so large that he no longer has buttworms, but the buttworms have a Snibborg.

I've just spent the past couple of days wondering what the heck they've put in your water over there across the pond.  You're all nuts. :D

Wow, it's like you can see into my mind. are you psychicish?
I have a confession to make of my own, I've been watching you watch the forums, thus creating a natural bond between us.

What if I told you I was on your side of the pond :D.

Anyways just wanted to say hi and hopefully I will be posting more.
Hi, welcome to CAG! Always nice to see new faces, with avatars ;)

Judging by how quickly you jumped into a conversation about creepy crawlies up your poop hole, I'm gonna say you'll fit in fine around here...

...I will let you be the judge of whether that's a good thing.

It was only two hours? The longest of my life in that case, please no one ever inflict that movie upon me again.
Thanks, will look into it!

Just to throw my foreign film recommendation into the mix: Eagle vs. Shark. It's a really quirky indie comedy from New Zealand/Middle Earth, which I found highly unique and entertaining. And it co-stars Jemaine Clement of Flight of the Conchords ^_^

Also Pan's Labyrinth was quite good, though likely more widely known. If you haven't seen it though definitely hurry up and do so, it's one of my favorite films of the previous decade!

Yes! Excellent movie! :D

Highly recommend Pan's Labyrinth.

If we're talking foreign flicks, some that I really liked include:

-> Oldboy (version directed by Chan-wook Park)

[I like that whole Vengeance series from Chan-Wook Park, but it's that film in particular I really liked]

-> The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo + The Girl Who Played With Fire + The Girl Who Kicked The Hornets' Nest (Swedish versions)

-> City of God

-> Swimming Pool

-> Talk To Her (Habla Con Ella)

-> The Skin I Live In

-> Let The Right One In (Swedish version)

-> Hero (starring Jet Li)

-> Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon

-> The Memory of a Killer

That was a really good recommendation, Departures was a really sad but very sentimental movie, I watched it a few years ago. If you like foreign films I can recommend a few.

  • Crying Out Love in the Center of the World
  • A Litre of Tears
  • Cape No. 7
  • Amélie
  • The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas

Crying Out Love in the Center of the World and A Litre of Tears were adapted from japanese TV series which I find are much better.
I haven't seen the movie version but the TV Drama version of Crying out Love, in the Centre of the World is powerful. I'd strongly recommend it. One Liter of Tears (J-Drama) has been in my backlog for quite a while.

I'd add that you liked Ayase Haruka and Yamada Takayuki in Crying Out Love, I'd also strongly recommend Byakuyako (Journey Under a Midnight Sun) .

There's a huge list of J-Dramas I can recommend depending on your tastes.

For anime-fans I'd recommend: Gokusen, Hana Kimi*, Hana Yori Dango**.

* The Japanese production of Hana Kimi is excellent but diverges from the manga. I'd strongly recommend the Taiwanese version as well, which sticks to the manga.

** I've been meaning to see the Korean version as well (Boys over Flowers). I'd also recommend pretty much anything with Masumoto Jun, Bambino & Kimi wa Petto (You are my pet) come to mind.

Oh and thanks, Cape #7 wasn't on my radar.

Yes, we are. But what about that time I caught you naked with a bowl of jello?

Have you seen the remake of Oldboy? I haven't seen the swedish version but I thought the US version of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo was a well-made adaptation. I am quite a fan of David Fincher's films such as Fight Club, Se7en, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Zodiac etc.

I am surprised that you like chinese history film like Hero, then you should definitely watch Red Cliff, it is based on real history events from Three Kingdoms period.

I haven't seen Oldboy remake (from Spike Lee), nope.

I did like The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo US version on a technical level, but NOWHERE as much as the original Swedish version.

Seven, Benjamin Button, and Zodiac were all really good, at the very least.

Ain't seen Red Cliff - but I absolutely LOVED Hero.

House of Flying Daggers was pretty good, as well - but for me, it just wasn't Hero. Hero was outstanding.

EDIT:

Interesting - so, John Woo is involved w/ Red Cliff. And, there's a TWO part version of this, which is 2 hours a piece.

About Tony Leung - he was in 2046, another foreign flick I really liked.

EDIT 2:

For other foreign martial-arts flicks, I did like Once Upon A Time in China series and Drunken Master series.

Again - didn't like those as much as Hero, though.

Spanking is your thing - I don't wanna be any part of that.

Speaking of Swedish films... I'd recommend The Seventh Seal (1957).  The progenitor of the the whole playing a game with Death... lampooned in many newer movies/shows.  (Notably Bill and Ted #2).

Ingmar_Bergman-The_Seventh_Seal-01.jpg

I'd also be remiss without mentioning something obscure.  I'd recommend IS ~Otoko Demo Onna Demo Nai Sei~ as it is completely different and quite moving.

I recommend Das Boot.

It's about a boot who has lost his family in a tragic accident and now has no feet to keep warm anymore. It's a gruesome tale of loneliness and depression. But with a happy ending!

Oh yeah, and there's also some Germans in it.

I have been searching the OST for Sekai no Chūshin de, Ai o Sakebu, but could not find it anywhere. This is the part that stirred up my emotion everytime.

Thanks for recommending Byakuyako, will check that one out. I have seen Gokusen, Hana Kimi, Hana Yori Dango but Gokusen and Hana Yori Dango are not my cup of tea, Hana Kimi was funny though. Hana Yori Dango has 3 adaptions from the manga, the first one was the Taiwanese version, followed by Japanese version then Korean version.

Fine, I'll hybridize... Densha Otoko (Train Man).
I think we have a lot of CAO here. :grouphug:

Red Cliff was about 4 hours long, it is like the chinese version of The Lord of the Rings. I assumed you like the fighting scenes in Hero, you should check out Ip Man 1 and 2 (starring Donnie Yen) or The Grandmaster (starring Tony Leung), those are biographical martial arts films of Ip Man, the man who taught Bruce Lee martial arts.

You're two hours better for not seeing it... terrible predictable movie.
Predictable? Yes. Terrible? Not really. More like mediocre. It was a better Dances With Wolves than Dances With Wolves.

I did like The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo US version on a technical level, but NOWHERE as much as the original Swedish version.
Seven, Benjamin Button, and Zodiac were all really good, at the very least.
Yeah, what he said on the Stieg Larsson. The Swedish originals are excellent. The US remake, while a good movie, is not as good.

I really liked it, inspired me to read the 2nd and third books, and I don't really read books. Yeah I skipped the first book, deal with it.
What I love about those books, and I guess also the movies, is that they make research seem so exciting. Speaking as someone who has spent time researching, they are a bit of a vicarious thrill.

I noted the various foreign movie recommendations, and I'll toss out two of my own:

Europa, Europa (1990)

and assuming Canada counts as foreign, The Sweet Hereafter (1997)
