Hey CAGS,

I’ve got some news I’m both excited and sad to share with you at the same time. I’ll be leaving the Digital Video Games team in Mid-March to join the marketing team for Amazon.com’s Loyalty and Rewards program, Amazon Coins. My boss and I have talked extensively about how to maintain and continue our presence here and across the other communities we’ve created in the past couple of years. To that end I’d like to introduce you to Josh, who take over monitoring, updating, and responding to this thread. Josh will be ramping up over the next couple of weeks, he  will be posting shortly to introduce himself.

Now that the “what’s going on” part of the message is out of the way I want to tell you all how much I love CAG and the posters here. This was the first community I joined when I started this job (anyone still remember that first thread?) and all of you have had a huge hand in shaping how we think about and execute Community Development and Management here at Amazon, which has in turn shaped my career these last two and a half years.

I started to write out a section calling out the regular posters and realized the list would be both overly long and incomplete at the same time. Instead I’d like to thank you all again, you all have my deep and sincere gratitude. I’ll still be around and my gaming accounts aren’t going anywhere so feel free to hit me up anytime you want to chat. I’ll probably still hang out in the thread too :).

Thanks again everyone, let me or Josh know if you have any questions!

The Indie Store has launched!
Amazon.com is launching a storefront dedicated to supporting and promoting PC/Mac/Web-based Indie Games. Our Digital Video Games team is a small group of passionate gamers and we’re all really excited to help Indie developers reach more customers quickly by providing a quick and simple process for bringing their games to market. Additionally we’ll be supporting the Indie Store with a ton of promotions, both at and after launch. Many of these promotions are designed to give the developer the opportunity to maximize their revenue. For example, Amazon is forfeiting all royalties from bundle sales and passing them along directly to the developer, we’ve also created an “Indie Spotlight” program to help customers learn more about the games and developers they love. We view the Indie developers as some of the most creative in the industry and we want to help them continue to create new and innovative experience for customers.

Why we are doing this:

  • Allow customers to discover an entirely new category of games on Amazon.com
  • Help developers reach new customers quickly. Our onboarding process is straightforward and we want to sell every Indie game available
  • We want to leverage our strengths to support and help the developers who are driving forward innovation and creativity in the games industry
General Information

Hi CAGs,
I'll be posting deals we're running on Digital Games (PC/Mac, Free to Play, Sony/Microsoft Points/Subs).

I'm also here to answer questions you might have, get you closer to the developers by hosting Q&As, setting up podcasts, live streaming gameplay etc. If I don't respond to a question you have in thread please send me a PM. These ping my email address and make it more likely that I will see your question and respond more quickly.

Cheers,
Tony

FYI. EA Games sold by Amazon will not activate on Steam.
F.A.Q.S.:

1. Does the game I'm buying from Amazon Activate on Steam/Origin/Uplay? What DRM does the game use?

There are two places to identify DRM on a digital video game detail page:

At the top of the page, below the title:

16hm7a8.png

In the "Product Description" section:

r06ykl.jpg

2. Note on Electronic Arts Games - For the most part, EA games sold on Amazon do not activate on Steam. Most activate on Origin.

3. Note on DRM with limited activations:

Our Policy

4. Sometimes I'll do giveaways.

5. I work with developers and publishers to get fun (or at least what I think is fun) content to share with you all. Here are some examples:

a. Check out the Pax Gameplay videos here: Xcom: Enemy Unknown I played Xcom with Jake, the Creative Director for the game, a few months before the game came out Also, on this page, check out the Q&A, also a community driven event.

b. Check out the interview on this page: Borderlands 2 we did this interview at E3 with Randy Pitchford this year.

c. We've partnered with the ++GoodGames Podcast to feature many of the games we carry. They talk to the developers about the game development process, how the games are conceptualized and managed, all kinds of fun stuff. I'm working on putting together full link list and will update when I have it.

What else do we sell?

Xbox Live Points and Subscriptions:

1600 Microsoft Live Points
4000 Microsoft Live Points
12 Month XBOX Live Subscription
3 Month XBOX Live Subscription]
12 Month + 1 XBOX Live Subscription

PSN+ Subscriptions and PSN Points:

$20 PSN Points
$50 PSN Points
12 Month PSN+ Subscription
3 Month PSN+ Subscription

We also have a Free-2-Play store supported by our GameConnect technology. Gameconnect allows you to link your Amazon.com account with free-2-play and MMO accounts so that you can buy things like in game currency, premium game time/subscriptions, in game items, etc. on Amazon.com using your Amazon.com payment options and have this content delivered directly into your game.

5. Price Matching notes: Generally we do not match international retailers (GMG, Gamersgate, etc) or physical retailers (Best Buy, Newegg.com, etc.)
To check out the Free-2-Play games we offer you can visit our storefront here: Free-2-Play Store

Come on now, I wouldn't do that to you guys. It's a DRM-free PC port of E.T. (Atari 2600). A classic in every sense of the word!

Really though, I'll have some indie deals (plus a few others) coming your way tomorrow, which I'll post in a new thread.
I can hear the frustrated squeaks and frantic scurrying of the Amazon hamsters to come up with something to replace the Bad Rats deal.

Perhaps a pricematch on Family Guy: Back to the Multiverse @ $12.49 ($2 would be better):

Steam: http://store.steampowered.com/app/214230

Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Family-Guy-Back-Multiverse-Download/dp/B00A2T1QV6

Even fans of Family Guy will only want to stab their brains out and cry themselves to sleep after playing the game.

Hmm... I'd buy that for $2.50.

Sooo, it sounds like you're encouraging a deal...but saying we'll hate the game.

ust 'cause I don't want Hell Yeah! in my library, does not mean I'm not a CAG. Just a really selective CAG. :)

Is E.T. somewhere to be found in the New Mexico desert? Not aliens, but game cartridges: millions of unsold copies of Atari 2600 title E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, whose landfill burial is one of the games industry’s enduring myths.

Last May, games firm Fuel Entertainment was granted permission to excavate within a 100-acre landfill in the Alamogordo, New Mexico desert, in an effort to prove once and for all whether the fabled burial actually happened.

Yes, please! If we don't get that crap out of the ground, then 1,000 years from now (well after we all died in the great console wars of 2064), someone will dig them up and think it's a damned time capsule. For the love of God, please let our culture be remembered for better things than...THAT. I mean, we invented a toilet that flushes without needing electricity, surely that should be worth something?

Hate to bother you Josh, but I (and probably a handful of others) bought an Amazon bundle with the Doctor Who adventure games in it awhile ago. Here are links to the games:

http://www.amazon.com/Doctor-Who-Epsiode-Daleks-Download/dp/B005KCIMQC
http://www.amazon.com/Doctor-Who-Episode-Cybermen-Download/dp/B005KCIQH2

http://www.amazon.com/Doctor-Who-Episode-Shadows-Download/dp/B005KCIVLI
http://www.amazon.com/Doctor-Who-Episode-Gunpowder-Download/dp/B008DI48NQ

And here's the game on Steam now (it's one listing that includes all 5 games):

http://store.steampowered.com/app/268830

These games have now gotten on Steam. In the past, we've been able to get Steam keys for games we've bought on Amazon if they've been Greenlit on Steam later on. Unfortunately, Amazon support gets confused very, very easily, especially when it comes to this sort of thing, so we've always had to tell Tony, he'd put his team on it, he'd make it happen.

Could you please look into this? Thanks!

I doubt you'll get Steam keys for that. The Adventure games were sold in a variety of places previously, before they even considered coming to Steam. The Groupees bundle received keys only because they were advertised as such.

And as far as I'm aware, NEVER have there been steam keys given for a game on Amazon if it was later greenlit. This has been discussed before, and I'm pretty sure the answer has always been "Too bad, sorry."

And since on Amazon they're sold separately, and the Steam version is basically just one game, you'll almost certainly not get a key. Amazon would not be able to give separate keys.

The only hope, I'd say, would be for Amazon to in the future sell the games as a bundle, which includes a steam key.

Shhh!

Seriously though, we've gotten Steam keys for things that weren't sold with Steam keys in the past. It would be ridiculous if every almost digital retailer around gave Steam keys after Greenlighting... except for Amazon. And considering the Vanguard Princess dev clearly said Amazon got Greelight keys, it's not as simple as "No, never going to happen".

Either way, it's worth asking.

Hey send good vibes, guys.

Finally got off my duff (actually I sat on it longer) and applied for some jobs today. Trying to get out of my funk and get back to doing what I do best.

Chances are slim in our market, but...you never know.

I'll buy a bunch of fun stuff and give it away here if I land either gig. One of them is IN THE GAMING INDUSTRY. OMG! :)

I'd expect Groupees, Desura, or HB or one those to offer a Non-Steam version then maybe later add Steam-keys to my account...

...not Amazon.

But, if Amazon can pull this off - AWESOME.

I'm all for buying a game and getting BOTH Non-Steam versions and Steam-versions on my account.

Did the keys for Vanguard Princess ever get added to peoples Amazon account?

People been complaining over at the Steam forums so I emailed tony and he said he would look into it ... never heard any thing since as he got this whole "I'm finally free of those annoying CAG members ... I mean new job thing".

I've been wondering about this as well. Have a feeling it got lost in the transfer of personnel.

*Edit: It sounds like some people are saying Amazon CS is refunding them so they can rebuy it (the version they sell now is as a Steam key) and some are reporting getting the key added to their account after their contact CS about, though no one reported it just being there without having to contact Amazon first.

When GamersGate gives Steam keys for Greenlit games, it's a little sad that Amazon doesn't. Really there's no written Amazon rule saying "We don't give Steam keys for Greenlit games." so that should be pretty high up on the list of things for Josh to look into if he wants to build Amazon's indie market, which Tony was majorly promoting.

If Amazon wants to be taken seriously in the indie department, they need to offer Greenlit keys, period.

There's plenty of places for cheap Indie games and bundles already, I look at Amazon more as a source of the best deals on AAA games and AAA bundles.

Regardless how you perceive Amazon as a digital games retailer, they created an indie store and you saw how much Tony was pushing it (if you were around then). That's still a facet of their business, and a new one that needs promoting and growth. Giving Greenlight keys would be the first step in that direction.

Does anyone else remember this song from *back in the day* circa 2006?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Rt_3_bQVJU

I couldn't stop listening to the song... Music Video is the Epic Journey to find those lost ET Cartridges.

The difference is that they did not exist, nor were they talked about existing, on Steam, when they were originally sold on Amazon.

Other websites practically primarily deal with Steam keys, and prominently promise Steam keys if/when greenlit. But it's unreasonable to expect that to retroactively apply to all purchases across all stores.

That's not to say that any NEW copies won't be sold with Steam keys, but when you purchased it, you got exactly what you were promised.

I admit I may be a bit biased about it because of stuff I deal with in real-life. :)

But I don't know, as much as I'd love all my games on Steam, if I want it on Steam bad enough, I'll buy it on Steam eventually.

If you bought a game before Steam existed, and now the game is on Steam, you wouldn't expect to them get a steam key for it. (I'm sure exceptions exist, but exceptions are not the rule)

Unfortunately, it's just something we have to deal with, while we wait for the shift in technology. I used to complain when I bought a movie and it didn't come with an iTunes Digital Copy. Now, I only buy movies digitally directly through iTunes.

Pretty soon, all games will only be sold digitally (pretty much already there).

Eh, that may or may not be true, but Amazon has clearly given Steam versions of something if a Steam version has been sold at a later time on their site. That's a fact, and the fact that they do that sets a precedent. Both Tony has done it, and customer support has done it. If they can't add the Steam key to your account for some reason, they'll refund you and you can buy the Steam version yourself. As Motoki said above, they're doing that with Vanguard Princess right now.

Granted if they end up not getting keys and selling the new Doctor Who game, we're up a creek. But otherwise, there's no reason to say we can't get Steam keys for our purchase.

If you aren't buying physical copies you should take a looksie here. Instead of paying full price from the itunes store you can snag new bluray (hdx) copies for around $2-$5. Get 3-4 movies for the price of 1!

apparently I suck at hidden object games, I can't find myself. :D

I'm kind of thinking of taking one for the team and getting Night of the Rabbit for $6, after which it will surely be in a bundle next week.

Speaking of Night of the Rabbit, while searching for it on Amazon, I came across a review by this odd creature about the boxed retail version, which you have to import from the UK where box retail for any PC game outside of Blizzard stuff is still a thing.

Are you a member of Steam's club? If not join today for intrusive crapware/malware!

Also, where the hell does he live that he's getting a 9 hour download for an adventure game, a time vortex leading to 1995?
he forgot to use yellow comic sans apparently.

Tony, if you still there roaming this thread I would like to say some words for you.

"One thing is never appreciated until the time you lose." => I think it resumes the feeling of the poeple here.

And... I want you to see where I live.

Have you ever thought of a career in diaper changing? Several of us Cags hired cumsuckmyfaceoff for that position, but so far he's been a no call - no show.

Jesus fucking Christ people why does this have to be the Spanish Inquisition? He said he would look into it. Let him fucking look into it. If he says no then he says no but he's an adult so stop trying to white knight or nitpick please.

A question was asked if something can be done. The answer was 'I'll check into it and get back to you'. Why don't we just wait and see instead of arguing it death?

Christ, can we go back to bullshit posts like 'I wish X was in a bundle?'

I can't even believe I'm asking for that.

Sometimes I really hate the internet.

how do you know that josh is spanish?

A question was asked if something can be done.
No, a blatant lie was told, in order to set false expectations, just so a request could be made that seems innocent enough, but in reality was asked in a completely deceitful manner. Calling a spade a spade is not nit-picking.

Complete lies.

My avatar is a self-portrait of sorts, which pretty much screams "I'm an orangutan." You do the math.

P.S. Still looking into the Steam key issue. Full honesty here, I might not have an answer until I'm back from GDC (Monday), but I'll get an answer one way or the other.

Lot of feelings flying around in this thread. Lot of what-have-ya's and even some angry words. Let's exhale, then light that fatty and inhale, deeply, cause I know some of you like it DEEP.

Deep... that's a strange word, isn't it? Just look at it for a moment:   d  e  e  p

Now say it and only it, back to back to back. It kind of loses all sense and meaning. What the hell is up with that? Oh God! Oh, God...
