Hey CAGS,

I’ve got some news I’m both excited and sad to share with you at the same time. I’ll be leaving the Digital Video Games team in Mid-March to join the marketing team for Amazon.com’s Loyalty and Rewards program, Amazon Coins. My boss and I have talked extensively about how to maintain and continue our presence here and across the other communities we’ve created in the past couple of years. To that end I’d like to introduce you to Josh, who take over monitoring, updating, and responding to this thread. Josh will be ramping up over the next couple of weeks, he  will be posting shortly to introduce himself.

Now that the “what’s going on” part of the message is out of the way I want to tell you all how much I love CAG and the posters here. This was the first community I joined when I started this job (anyone still remember that first thread?) and all of you have had a huge hand in shaping how we think about and execute Community Development and Management here at Amazon, which has in turn shaped my career these last two and a half years.

I started to write out a section calling out the regular posters and realized the list would be both overly long and incomplete at the same time. Instead I’d like to thank you all again, you all have my deep and sincere gratitude. I’ll still be around and my gaming accounts aren’t going anywhere so feel free to hit me up anytime you want to chat. I’ll probably still hang out in the thread too :).

Thanks again everyone, let me or Josh know if you have any questions!

The Indie Store has launched!
Amazon.com is launching a storefront dedicated to supporting and promoting PC/Mac/Web-based Indie Games. Our Digital Video Games team is a small group of passionate gamers and we’re all really excited to help Indie developers reach more customers quickly by providing a quick and simple process for bringing their games to market. Additionally we’ll be supporting the Indie Store with a ton of promotions, both at and after launch. Many of these promotions are designed to give the developer the opportunity to maximize their revenue. For example, Amazon is forfeiting all royalties from bundle sales and passing them along directly to the developer, we’ve also created an “Indie Spotlight” program to help customers learn more about the games and developers they love. We view the Indie developers as some of the most creative in the industry and we want to help them continue to create new and innovative experience for customers.

Why we are doing this:

  • Allow customers to discover an entirely new category of games on Amazon.com
  • Help developers reach new customers quickly. Our onboarding process is straightforward and we want to sell every Indie game available
  • We want to leverage our strengths to support and help the developers who are driving forward innovation and creativity in the games industry
General Information

Hi CAGs,
I'll be posting deals we're running on Digital Games (PC/Mac, Free to Play, Sony/Microsoft Points/Subs).

I'm also here to answer questions you might have, get you closer to the developers by hosting Q&As, setting up podcasts, live streaming gameplay etc. If I don't respond to a question you have in thread please send me a PM. These ping my email address and make it more likely that I will see your question and respond more quickly.

Cheers,
Tony

FYI. EA Games sold by Amazon will not activate on Steam.
F.A.Q.S.:

1. Does the game I'm buying from Amazon Activate on Steam/Origin/Uplay? What DRM does the game use?

There are two places to identify DRM on a digital video game detail page:

At the top of the page, below the title:

16hm7a8.png

In the "Product Description" section:

2. Note on Electronic Arts Games - For the most part, EA games sold on Amazon do not activate on Steam. Most activate on Origin.

3. Note on DRM with limited activations:

Our Policy

4. Sometimes I'll do giveaways.

5. I work with developers and publishers to get fun (or at least what I think is fun) content to share with you all. Here are some examples:

a. Check out the Pax Gameplay videos here: Xcom: Enemy Unknown I played Xcom with Jake, the Creative Director for the game, a few months before the game came out Also, on this page, check out the Q&A, also a community driven event.

b. Check out the interview on this page: Borderlands 2 we did this interview at E3 with Randy Pitchford this year.

c. We've partnered with the ++GoodGames Podcast to feature many of the games we carry. They talk to the developers about the game development process, how the games are conceptualized and managed, all kinds of fun stuff. I'm working on putting together full link list and will update when I have it.

What else do we sell?

Xbox Live Points and Subscriptions:

1600 Microsoft Live Points
4000 Microsoft Live Points
12 Month XBOX Live Subscription
3 Month XBOX Live Subscription]
12 Month + 1 XBOX Live Subscription

PSN+ Subscriptions and PSN Points:

$20 PSN Points
$50 PSN Points
12 Month PSN+ Subscription
3 Month PSN+ Subscription

We also have a Free-2-Play store supported by our GameConnect technology. Gameconnect allows you to link your Amazon.com account with free-2-play and MMO accounts so that you can buy things like in game currency, premium game time/subscriptions, in game items, etc. on Amazon.com using your Amazon.com payment options and have this content delivered directly into your game.

5. Price Matching notes: Generally we do not match international retailers (GMG, Gamersgate, etc) or physical retailers (Best Buy, Newegg.com, etc.)
To check out the Free-2-Play games we offer you can visit our storefront here: Free-2-Play Store

I believe he was talking about Shawn White Skateboarding, not snowboarding. From what I've heard it's much worse than the snowboarding one.
Actually both. The pack comes with both games for $4.99. The consensus is that snowboarding is alright but skateboarding is plain awful. I shall see when I buy them.

Great review!

So what is the end-game like? Is there a strong story progression through the game and a feeling of an actual ending you can reach, or is it just a standard open world and you wander around and do things until you get too bored to continue?
The "first act" as the story has been called isn't yet complete. A new location, Tokyo, will be added at some point (for free I believe), where the current act will be concluded. It looks fucking amazing, from what's been shown.

I'm a little disturbed you want pics of someone doing that. ;)

To paraphrase a great man, "Who's the weirder? The weirdo or the guy who stalks him in the panty aisle?"
But isn't the one who stalks the stalker who stalks the panty sniffer the ultimate weirdo? lmao

and sadly that wouldn't be the worst pics posted on here ;)

Welcome back.  Grab a beer, put your feet up and and stay awhile.

And if you disappear go on vacation during the better-be-f'ing-awesome Halloween/BF/Holiday sales there gonna be a mutiny up in this joint.

;)

Ok, I just re-read the past 12 pages that I missed. I got to ALOT of multi quotes so I'm going to try and group the questions (lots of repeats) into buckets:

1. Apologies to those who feel we've lost our Steam and you couldn't find anything to buy.

2. Apologies to those who missed out on a deal they really wanted and posted a request to have it added back into the sale (anyone else see the irony?). We will have a recap day at the end that will contain many of the deals that performed well during the sale. Stay tuned.

3. Someone asked about key supply, we should be good, we ordered lots.

4. I wasn't on vacation, I was at PAX + Rome II and FFXIV launched last week, consuming most of my life.

5. Sorry about the on-site navigation regarding filtering by Steam keys, we built technology to support this kind of filter, apparently it had a couple bugs. I have been informed it was fixed on Saturday.

I think this answers/addresses everything, let me know if you have further questions.

Edit: I've been writing too many emails lately lol, that sounded like something I'd send my boss.

For levity, here's what Paddington looks like after he's scratched his neck and needs a cone:

On a more serious note, is there a reason why my amex points cant be used on digital goods but can be used everywhere else on amazon?  Is it something that amex doesnt allow?

I wish. Another item on the "it's on the roadmap" list. I email/call/visit that team to check in on it often but I have no solid date as to when you'll be able to use your points on our products. I was hoping it would have been a few months ago to be honest :(.

Cheers,
Tony

I'm going to hold him hostage deep in the woods until Amazon gets this taken care of....

Hey Tony welcome back!  Thanks for the mini-Q&A :)  A couple of us (myself included) also asked earlier if there was anything in the works for sales on Ubisoft games (Steam and non-Steam), such as Far Cry 3, Blood Dragon and Assassin's Creed 3.

Thanks!

Ah, negative. Additionally Ubi reached out recently and let us know that the days of Steam keys on Amazon are over :(.

Makes sense, if Ubi wants to try and actually push UPlay onto PC gamers.

So, does that mean we might FINALLY see a AC3 Deluxe version that is UPlay Only?

Why do you guys not have AC3 Deluxe in a UPlay Only version?

Think about it - pushing Steam keys to Amazon DVG probably cuts into their (UbiSoft's) profits. I'd guess Valve gets a cut of every Steam-version sale.

Ubi would probably make more per game on a UPlay Version Only sale - since they own UPlay.

That'd cut Valve out of a sale.

EDIT:

Plus, they're probably trying to push gamers AWAY from Steam and push them onto UPlay.

Trying to make that move is probably WAY too late, Ubi.

They're still WAY behind what Origin is doing.

Personally, I'm more interested in seeing some older titles being Uplay enabled. Such as all the Tom Clancy titles or the older AC's. EA/Origin can do it...come on Ubi/Uplay, get with it.

Oh, yes - I could get down with that.

And hopefully, they'd let me activate my SC: Chaos Theory retail key onto UPlay. I'd love to get a version of that WITHOUT that God-awful StarForce.

EDIT:

That'd be a good way to get PC gamers to actually want to get onto UPlay and actually use UPlay - let them activate their old games over UPlay.

Even if they net more per game, how many fewer units will they sell?

You fools. Steam will be dead by year's end. Mark my words.

On a serious note, maybe big players like EA and Ubi making their games Origin/Uplay exclusive will force Steam to force Valve to release a new game. Maybe even Half Life 3. Wait, that wasn't serious at all.

Is it Steam? Is it Steamworks? Is it a Steam key? Does it come with a Steam key? Does it activate on Steam?

Yeah, that's a pretty good question.

Probably gonna depend on the game.

In the grand schemes of things - they look like they are trying to be more like Steam and Origin. I mean, we can now finally activate some UPlay keys over UPlay now.

The way they are going to get more of their foot in the door - force their big-titles (like AC series, Far Cry series) to use UPlay: kind of like how EA forced Origin onto ME3 and Battlefield 3.

Steam got the Steam-ball rolling by forcing Steam onto every copy of HL2 PC namely. It was just the beginning then - and now look at what Steam become. Of course, I don't think any service has a chance to take Steam down, anytime soon. Steam came at the right time w/ the right games - and constantly improved their service.

Valve owns the PC distribution market by a ridiculous margin. They probably don't even have to release another game ever again, if they don't want to - and they'd still rake in the $ w/ the tons of publishers and dev's lined-up to make their game use Steamworks.

Yeah, EA would need to multiply its Origin team and get crackin' ASAP if they want to approximate Steam's features one day, but maybe EA counters with a different blueprint and its own perks.

It would require way too many gold doubloons to compete on this grimy platform doe  but using coins to make it rain on strippers hurts them so EA really should get rid of 'em somehow (the coins).

And most of these services like Origin and UPlay are still LIGHT years behind what Steam has ALREADY done before, nevermind what Steam's currently doing.

Those guys came WAY LATE to the party.

I'm still waiting for Amazon Points we build-up on our CC's (Credit Cards) can be used on digital downloads, too.

I think I asked that back when you first joined CAG, as well. :whistle2:x

better late than never right?

Oh wait...no I'd just like everything on Steam :bouncy:
Yeah, it's okay if they are late to the party!

Especially if they are going to be competitive price-wise w/ Steam and at least have an "okay" service.

The more competition & the more price-cuts/sales = BETTER for the consumer.
