Hey CAGS,

I’ve got some news I’m both excited and sad to share with you at the same time. I’ll be leaving the Digital Video Games team in Mid-March to join the marketing team for Amazon.com’s Loyalty and Rewards program, Amazon Coins. My boss and I have talked extensively about how to maintain and continue our presence here and across the other communities we’ve created in the past couple of years. To that end I’d like to introduce you to Josh, who take over monitoring, updating, and responding to this thread. Josh will be ramping up over the next couple of weeks, he  will be posting shortly to introduce himself.

Now that the “what’s going on” part of the message is out of the way I want to tell you all how much I love CAG and the posters here. This was the first community I joined when I started this job (anyone still remember that first thread?) and all of you have had a huge hand in shaping how we think about and execute Community Development and Management here at Amazon, which has in turn shaped my career these last two and a half years.

I started to write out a section calling out the regular posters and realized the list would be both overly long and incomplete at the same time. Instead I’d like to thank you all again, you all have my deep and sincere gratitude. I’ll still be around and my gaming accounts aren’t going anywhere so feel free to hit me up anytime you want to chat. I’ll probably still hang out in the thread too :).

Thanks again everyone, let me or Josh know if you have any questions!

The Indie Store has launched!
Amazon.com is launching a storefront dedicated to supporting and promoting PC/Mac/Web-based Indie Games. Our Digital Video Games team is a small group of passionate gamers and we’re all really excited to help Indie developers reach more customers quickly by providing a quick and simple process for bringing their games to market. Additionally we’ll be supporting the Indie Store with a ton of promotions, both at and after launch. Many of these promotions are designed to give the developer the opportunity to maximize their revenue. For example, Amazon is forfeiting all royalties from bundle sales and passing them along directly to the developer, we’ve also created an “Indie Spotlight” program to help customers learn more about the games and developers they love. We view the Indie developers as some of the most creative in the industry and we want to help them continue to create new and innovative experience for customers.

Why we are doing this:

  • Allow customers to discover an entirely new category of games on Amazon.com
  • Help developers reach new customers quickly. Our onboarding process is straightforward and we want to sell every Indie game available
  • We want to leverage our strengths to support and help the developers who are driving forward innovation and creativity in the games industry
General Information

Hi CAGs,
I'll be posting deals we're running on Digital Games (PC/Mac, Free to Play, Sony/Microsoft Points/Subs).

I'm also here to answer questions you might have, get you closer to the developers by hosting Q&As, setting up podcasts, live streaming gameplay etc. If I don't respond to a question you have in thread please send me a PM. These ping my email address and make it more likely that I will see your question and respond more quickly.

Cheers,
Tony

FYI. EA Games sold by Amazon will not activate on Steam.
F.A.Q.S.:

1. Does the game I'm buying from Amazon Activate on Steam/Origin/Uplay? What DRM does the game use?

There are two places to identify DRM on a digital video game detail page:

At the top of the page, below the title:

16hm7a8.png

In the "Product Description" section:

r06ykl.jpg

2. Note on Electronic Arts Games - For the most part, EA games sold on Amazon do not activate on Steam. Most activate on Origin.

3. Note on DRM with limited activations:

Our Policy

4. Sometimes I'll do giveaways.

5. I work with developers and publishers to get fun (or at least what I think is fun) content to share with you all. Here are some examples:

a. Check out the Pax Gameplay videos here: Xcom: Enemy Unknown I played Xcom with Jake, the Creative Director for the game, a few months before the game came out Also, on this page, check out the Q&A, also a community driven event.

b. Check out the interview on this page: Borderlands 2 we did this interview at E3 with Randy Pitchford this year.

c. We've partnered with the ++GoodGames Podcast to feature many of the games we carry. They talk to the developers about the game development process, how the games are conceptualized and managed, all kinds of fun stuff. I'm working on putting together full link list and will update when I have it.

What else do we sell?

Xbox Live Points and Subscriptions:

1600 Microsoft Live Points
4000 Microsoft Live Points
12 Month XBOX Live Subscription
3 Month XBOX Live Subscription]
12 Month + 1 XBOX Live Subscription

PSN+ Subscriptions and PSN Points:

$20 PSN Points
$50 PSN Points
12 Month PSN+ Subscription
3 Month PSN+ Subscription

We also have a Free-2-Play store supported by our GameConnect technology. Gameconnect allows you to link your Amazon.com account with free-2-play and MMO accounts so that you can buy things like in game currency, premium game time/subscriptions, in game items, etc. on Amazon.com using your Amazon.com payment options and have this content delivered directly into your game.

5. Price Matching notes: Generally we do not match international retailers (GMG, Gamersgate, etc) or physical retailers (Best Buy, Newegg.com, etc.)
To check out the Free-2-Play games we offer you can visit our storefront here: Free-2-Play Store

Tony,

Please update the OP with an explanation of Online Game Code vs Instant Access. This is coming up as a question every page or so on the thread, it seems like. :(
Not to besmirch the asker (because I've done it myself), but there's also a search thread function right at the top of the page. Though, it would be handy to get an updated FAQ in the OP.

I would think you would want that info on the product pages on Amazon.  That's where I looked for the answer and didn't see it.

Edit - I do see on the instant access where it does show this:

Send your purchase instantly to your Origin account. How Account Linking Works

But to me that reads as more of an optional feature and not a mandatory requirement.

I do agree that it could be clearer. For example, on the instant access page for C&C, it says this at the bottom of the games list:

EA Origin account required for activation and installation

TO ACCESS ONLINE FEATURES, YOU MUST REGISTER ONLINE WITH THE ENCLOSED SERIAL CODE. ONLY ONE REGISTRATION AVAILABLE PER GAME. INTERNET CONNECTION REQUIRED. END USER LICENSE AGREEMENT REQUIRED TO PLAY. EULA, EA ONLINE TERMS & CONDITIONS AND FEATURE UPDATES
This certainly implies you'll get a serial code, but you don't. The Instant Access thing feels like more of a bandaid application for whatever problem was being caused, rather than one that was fully thought out and applied to the site. That's what a lot of the digital aspect of the store is, though, and that's been discussed previously.

LOL hey guys,

Here's the new concept we're testing out. I'm going to sit here today and compile your wishlists. You can help me do this easier by posting in the following manner:

1. Name of the game or list of games you want in a bundle

2. Links to them on Amazon if you have time to grab them

3. The price you'd be excited about seeing, note things like $5 AAA titles that came out a week prior will be cataloged but there if you suggest something that is absurd even by CAG standards just understand it will probably never happen lol.

I'm going to take all of these suggestions and put them in a separate tab on our excel based promotional tracker. I shall be naming this tab "The People's Tab".

Cheers,

Tony

Tony,

Wake them damn hamsters up and tell them to get working on some coding for conditional products. Like "instant access" games not showing up unless you are logged in on your amazon account and your origin and amazon accounts are already linked.

Hamster need work or they get fat and lazy and then some cat comes along and they are to fat to get away. So really I'm just looking out for your hamsters.

Alright it's been taken by user

plft.

Just to be clear this giveaway is over. The game I am giving away later will be given away in a different manner. No more pms. It's gone.

I gave away Guilty Gear Isuka. There is no more Guilty Gear Isuka.

Thanks, sorry I don't keep up with this thread on a daily basis. So I'm guessing the download version is what I want to buy then? And I can just give my daughter the Origin Key after I buy it?
What? You can't keep up with the pages of posts about peoples' DRM-laden grandmas and sweater dogs? Welcome to CAG, jthieme. People may criticize you for asking a legitimate question (if you aren't in bed with this thread on a daily basis), but please don't let it bother you. Origin "Instant Access" is kind of an odd thing for a retail site like Amazon which has DVG products that utilize all the various forms of DRM.

Just a heads up for the other two Sims 3 junkies who read this thread:  Looks like the EC credits apply to other Expansion Packs that are not included in the Master List.  I checked Pets, Generations, University Life, Seasons, Supernatural, and Ambitions.  Credit worked on each of them, bringing their respective prices into the $7-$10 range.

I don't know what his secret is, but there have been a number of times when I've hovered over someone's screen name, it shows their latest activity as looking at Detruire's profile. They could have just posted a comment, but they're still looking at Detruire's profile.

He must have some sexy pheromones.

EDIT: It shows I'm doing it, too, right now. I've been snared, and I didn't even know it!

Look out, he's snatchin' all your people up.

Tony,

Any chance you can bump Saints Row IV to the EC list (like within the next 2 days)? This game actually deserves to be on the 2013 Editor's Choice list (unlike, say, Mass Effect 2 which came out years ago), as it actually came out in 2013! I'm not even asking for a better price above and beyond the Steam price match of 19.99 for the weekend, I just want to use a coupon on it.  Please?  I'll be your BFF. Bonus points if you could add the season pass as well, say for around 7.49-8.49 before coupon.  Thanks in advance, I'll be refreshing the EC Amazon page anxiously awaiting the addition.

As for my Wishlist, I would really like to see the Sonic Everywhere pack back at 14.99 and be able to use an EC coupon to bring it down to 9.99. Would definitely bite on that.  Besides that and Saints Row IV, the only other thing I'm looking for is a combo of Enemy Unknown/Enemy Within for 19.99 before coupon.  I already have the older Xcom games, and I see you removed the bundle of just these two from the Holiday sale.  Thanks for listening!

I don't see the point of having codes and instant access both at the same time under separate listings for the same game. It's redundant and confusing to many people, and it's not just here I see that question asked a lot, it gets asked repeatedly at Reddit too. I'm sure there's people who browse Amazon but don't regularly post on forums that are confused about it as well.

That should tell them that they either need to clarify their description, consolidate the listings so it asks people clearly to make a choice which they want or just pick one.

The instant access is nice and all but I'm not really seeing the need for it personally especially since, unlike Steam, you can redeem Origin keys outside of client via their web site.

I would mention that it's already on sale at $15 and free shipping currently at the Microsoft store but the last time I did that I got told that Bill Gates is the devil and that Tony works hard for the money, so hard for it honey.

Lol he is a thief not the devil and SR IV is also $15.98 on Gametap. They also stole my money when they first started up their subscription based gaming service when I had to talk to 237 different people over 3 months to get them to let me cancel.

Edit: I also have fear of boxes... The ones that smile are ok!

He's got a long way to go to catch up with my number of profile views.

Well looks like me buying any other EC games just went right out the window now that Deadly Premonition is a part of the Indie Gala. I'm still gonna be coming back way later to do that giveaway in this thread.

Also according to Joystiq a possible explanation for why SquareEnix thought Tomb Raider reboot and Hitman Absolution sales were so terrible when they were actually really good. Was it because they expected those games to make up the losses of this failed experiment?

Is the Command and Conquer collection $9.99 until the end of the month or does it end at an earlier date?  That one isn't listed in the OP and I'm still on the fence about it.  Will pick it up at the end of the month if I still have enough coupons (still holding out for additions to the EC list) assuming it won't end before the 31st.

It's already over.

Gamestop still has it at 4.99, though.

Game hoarding has taken on a whole new and dangerous level... DLC Hoarding. I wish Origin combined all the DLC under the base game so my addiction wasn't so in-my-face.

It has hit $8 many times... those of us who haven't picked it up yet are likely waiting for $5 or GOTY.

(I'm waiting for GOTY.)
True. $5 is my pricepoint too. 2014 is my year of DLC or GOTY. I got a little tired in 2013 of buying base games and not playing them, only to buy their DLCs later in the year and still not playing them and then seeing GOTY/bundles offered later for less than what I paid for just the base game... le sigh.
