Hey CAGS,

I’ve got some news I’m both excited and sad to share with you at the same time. I’ll be leaving the Digital Video Games team in Mid-March to join the marketing team for Amazon.com’s Loyalty and Rewards program, Amazon Coins. My boss and I have talked extensively about how to maintain and continue our presence here and across the other communities we’ve created in the past couple of years. To that end I’d like to introduce you to Josh, who take over monitoring, updating, and responding to this thread. Josh will be ramping up over the next couple of weeks, he  will be posting shortly to introduce himself.

Now that the “what’s going on” part of the message is out of the way I want to tell you all how much I love CAG and the posters here. This was the first community I joined when I started this job (anyone still remember that first thread?) and all of you have had a huge hand in shaping how we think about and execute Community Development and Management here at Amazon, which has in turn shaped my career these last two and a half years.

I started to write out a section calling out the regular posters and realized the list would be both overly long and incomplete at the same time. Instead I’d like to thank you all again, you all have my deep and sincere gratitude. I’ll still be around and my gaming accounts aren’t going anywhere so feel free to hit me up anytime you want to chat. I’ll probably still hang out in the thread too :).

Thanks again everyone, let me or Josh know if you have any questions!

The Indie Store has launched!
Amazon.com is launching a storefront dedicated to supporting and promoting PC/Mac/Web-based Indie Games. Our Digital Video Games team is a small group of passionate gamers and we’re all really excited to help Indie developers reach more customers quickly by providing a quick and simple process for bringing their games to market. Additionally we’ll be supporting the Indie Store with a ton of promotions, both at and after launch. Many of these promotions are designed to give the developer the opportunity to maximize their revenue. For example, Amazon is forfeiting all royalties from bundle sales and passing them along directly to the developer, we’ve also created an “Indie Spotlight” program to help customers learn more about the games and developers they love. We view the Indie developers as some of the most creative in the industry and we want to help them continue to create new and innovative experience for customers.

Why we are doing this:

  • Allow customers to discover an entirely new category of games on Amazon.com
  • Help developers reach new customers quickly. Our onboarding process is straightforward and we want to sell every Indie game available
  • We want to leverage our strengths to support and help the developers who are driving forward innovation and creativity in the games industry
General Information

Hi CAGs,
I'll be posting deals we're running on Digital Games (PC/Mac, Free to Play, Sony/Microsoft Points/Subs).

I'm also here to answer questions you might have, get you closer to the developers by hosting Q&As, setting up podcasts, live streaming gameplay etc. If I don't respond to a question you have in thread please send me a PM. These ping my email address and make it more likely that I will see your question and respond more quickly.

Cheers,
Tony

FYI. EA Games sold by Amazon will not activate on Steam.
F.A.Q.S.:

1. Does the game I'm buying from Amazon Activate on Steam/Origin/Uplay? What DRM does the game use?

There are two places to identify DRM on a digital video game detail page:

At the top of the page, below the title:

In the "Product Description" section:

2. Note on Electronic Arts Games - For the most part, EA games sold on Amazon do not activate on Steam. Most activate on Origin.

3. Note on DRM with limited activations:

Our Policy

4. Sometimes I'll do giveaways.

5. I work with developers and publishers to get fun (or at least what I think is fun) content to share with you all. Here are some examples:

a. Check out the Pax Gameplay videos here: Xcom: Enemy Unknown I played Xcom with Jake, the Creative Director for the game, a few months before the game came out Also, on this page, check out the Q&A, also a community driven event.

b. Check out the interview on this page: Borderlands 2 we did this interview at E3 with Randy Pitchford this year.

c. We've partnered with the ++GoodGames Podcast to feature many of the games we carry. They talk to the developers about the game development process, how the games are conceptualized and managed, all kinds of fun stuff. I'm working on putting together full link list and will update when I have it.

What else do we sell?

Bruticus, I think that your point is valid that it would be better for Amazon and Tony to have the publishers lined up with the deals prior to EC.  Yes,  Tony is on this site and thread and also reddit promoting Amazon digital sales - WOW what a concept.  It seems that compared the past couple of years, this EC sale has not been as well received.  There have been some good buys i.e. DLC for Deep Space 3 or Marlo Briggs, etc...  This industry is still evolving.  For instance, more players/companies now involved in digital sales and more aggressively.  Even Tony will state at times basically "That game is at a great price at this time.  If you want it now, buy it now (from another company)."

I am not implying that you are not correct in your observation or comments, but may want to consider how you could be perceived as coming across.  At the end of the day, we are gamers,  we are cheap gamers and we buy games to play and backlog.  We also love to come to sites like CAG to associate with like minded people and to discuss not only deals and games, but just BS sometimes.

Hopefully Tony can arrange some other deals prior to the end of EC.  I think the comments / suggestion of a "recap" day would go over well.  Thankfully, Amazon has sales throughout the year.  It is a great time to play games on the computer.

Tony sent me a gift for a wedding present. I  fuck you not. He didn't say anything about itt, either, so it's not like it was a thing to get people to hang out here more. Sure, selling stuff on Amazon is his job, but he goes way beyond that.

If buying all those expansions get you play a ton more of Sims 3, then EA did well during this sale for you. :D

I don't know what it is, but every time I actually wind-up buy an expansion to any Sims game - I get sucked into the damn game AGAIN for freaking hours and hours!

Sometimes my mind-state going in is, "I'll play this for a few hours."

YEP - always happens; very accurate.

Sometimes, it's like, "Eh, I'll play this and kick it around for maybe a half-hour to an hour."

WRONG - that turns into freaking 3-6 hours.
TBH, I'm a little scared of starting to play Sims 3 again. I usually end up just building this child-producing, lesbian army (closely resembling a few ex girlfriends) who consistantly abandon their children and take over the town... I'm just not sure I want to go there again.

Don't lie... Is that the plot to a bad horror-porno crossover film?

I see that SimCity: Cities of Tomorrow will be going on sale tomorrow.

Do the prices change sometime at night today/midnight or is it during the day time tomorrow?

Was it by chance unlimited EC coupons?

On one hand Bruticis is right about this sale being poorly planned, but on the other hand Tony is very nice and gave me a free game.

Will you love me forever if I give you a free game?

If you say yes, this:

Nope.

Eh. I'm not sure why things are different this year, but he did address why it couldn't be planned much ahead of time--all the pubs were focused on xmas sales and refused to talk about the EC stuff. Plus I'm sure he was pretty swamped with xmas as well--I know he was crazy busy in here and on reddit as well.

Even if you ignore that Tony is a pretty awesome guy, the fact is that it is his job to sell this stuff. It's in his best interest to come up with deals that will make us go gaga and buy the crap out of stuff. Sure, we as a group are bitching about not getting fantastic games for close to free, but it's literally his job and he's undoubtably more motivated and more annoyed about the lack of ability to provide an epic success for us and his publishers. EC is his baby, remember--it's his idea. If it doesn't do well then that's his failure at his job. For us it's just a cheap bit of entertainment. I don't think anybody can reasonably argue that he's not doing everything he can. So yeah, I think it's bullshit to complain about the deals. He's more invested in the success of this than we are.

ya gud point but i think he's not trying hard enuff

The sale is fairly weak versus previous sales. I don't think Tony was "shady" or any of that dumb shit (and if you bought stuff just for coupons and now you're mad, that's your own dumb fault). I assume he figured since the same sale worked great the previous two years it would work as well this year and was a little blindsided by the lack of publisher response. No body calls it "poorly planned" when it works

if you bought stuff just for coupons and now you're mad, that's your own dumb fault
I'm not Mooby. I didn't buy a crap load of 50 cent DLC just to get a coupon for a sale that's yet to appear. Sorry to slut shame you, Mooby, but it had to be done. I tried to warn you!

and if you bought stuff just for coupons and now you're mad, that's your own dumb fault
Lol, I feel bad for the guys who bought pizza dude over and over in preparation for the sale. I bought one of the bit trip games as well as the teleglitch dlc, just in case i didn't have enough coupons. Those are two things I kind of wanted anyway, though.

Wow .. just wow.. you wanna show the world how it's done heh.. I'm pretty sure Tony did everything he could to bring this sale up to par with the previous years which had great results. Please enlighten us on how he could have expected the different reps to just not take part this year?
I've always been a fan of kidnapping children... It seems to have good results on TV shows.

Hey guys. still looking for someone to donate me a coupon or two. But I guess in the meantime...

...I thought that was how you win

Cause Tony is such a nice guy.
Well, not just "nice guy", but if you go and read through this thread, and look at /r/GameDeals on reddit, you see he's hustling. He's directly answering lots of questions. Most companies don't have a person that gets their "hands dirty" to that degree, so even though the sale really is falling short of the expectations people had -some unrealistic, some not... just by looking at a list of the sales from last year, http://www.reddit.com/r/GameDeals/comments/15tfb3/amazon_editors_choice_january_sale_update_for_jan/

you can really see that there just was the same level of stuff there.

Now, a lot of it probably was because of how aggressively the holiday season was chased, and the fact that last year there wasn't a store attached to just about every bundle site, but it's not unreasonable to expect that what happened last year is really going to dictate what people are looking for.

I'm underwhelmed- I did buy several games at the very end of the holiday sale just for the credits- expecting that we might see bundles like last year... that really hasn't come up.

I'm not completely down on it- I'm very happy to have gotten Brothers at the best price it's been available, and the Ace Patrol bundles was more than worth the dollar I spent on it, but it's just that the holiday deals are so fresh in people's minds... making things that actually are still "deals" seem like "not deals", because you could have bought them for that exact same price all last month, without the benefit of a credit.

I hope it doesn't get too ugly... because it really seems like a lot of the things that people were even marginally excited about ended yesterday or end tonight. (Even some of the games on the banner for the sale!)

There's still ten days, of course- and to turn it around for a lot of people, I'm sure one or two good bundles, and 2-3 known games for free or almost free after the credit would quickly turn around how people view the sale.

I know it's not going to happen, but my biggest hope is still the Sega 48-game Arcade pack on Steam. But I'm pretty sure it's been mentioned that getting the keys for that just didn't happen and it's not going to.

Oh and other little Gem of this sale was Final Exam... something that was barely on my radar before, but a nicely done brawler with improvable stats and skill-trees.
Somehow I missed it. Looks fun. Maybe it'll go 7.99 again.

Nice! I was away watching Sherlock s3e2, so I missed this. If you're still trying for a coupon let me know via PM. I've got...11 left. And only one definite EC coupon left to use, though hopefully things will change there.
