Amazon VOD streaming now free w/ Prime

People really expected this for the freebie prime accounts? lol

Now i cant wait until my mom account is up so i can pay for prime again and be done with netflix
 
oh wow, this is awesome..another reason why I'm a happy paying Prime member!

At first I was like 'boooo' on all these companies trying to oust Netflix. But apparently Netflix has been dropping the ball in some areas. So I'm all for Amazon or Redbox stepping it up. Plus who knows, if the prices are reasonable, I wouldn't have a problem supporting multiple services.
 
Glad to see the rumors were true and the day one offerings are pretty good. Once Spartacus wraps up this weekend, my Netflix days are over.
 
To those who are saying they're going to drop Netflix and go with Amazon, I feel like you're being far too hasty. The Amazon service is extremely limited, and as far as I can see, it's 95% foreign/British/movies and shows older than 20 years. Netflix might be a little more expensive...it's like $17 more a year...but you pay for quality. If you're jumping to Amazon Prime for strictly the video on demand services, then you're going to be sorely disappointed.

Can't complain since I'm already a paying customer. I've never used a streaming service before; does it just open in WMP or something?

It'll play in a browser, and amazon also has a proprietary VOD player (PC only) which you can download and play all VOD content, but I'm not sure if it'll work for the streaming. Also curious about if this works on the Roku, I have this, as a primary prime subscriber, and I'd definitely use it on the Roku, cause there is some stuff on here that's not on netflix.
 
Only on a guest account, so I can't get it currently. Oh well, wouldn't really use it anyway since I have no way to get it on my TV (TV lacks pc inputs, laptop only has PC output) and I won't watch stuff on my laptop or desktop instead of my big screen. Netflix I do through my 360.

I'll always have Netflix anyway as I want Bluray/DVD rentals as well as streaming.

They are going to have a hard time competing with netflix unless they can get their software integrated into hardware like netflix has. Most people don't want to watch tv from a computer. Amazon hasn't even got an app on game consoles for vod stuff you purchase which is something that should have been done long ago.
 
Amazon needs to bring their streaming service to PS3 and i will sign up.
My student account expires this summer i hope they will add more movies and more streaming devices.

For people that are knocking the price of PRIME, what are you people on! Even at the current price this is a steal. This is meant for people who use AMAZON a lot, if you are not one of these people than I can understand why you think the price is bad. This is more a perk to PRIME members than anything else. I for one, order something at least once or twice a month and a ton of stuff around Christmas. The money I save for shipping alone is worth the membership of PRIME. You literally are paying $6.60 a month for 2 day shipping on anything (Release day delivery on games) and now they throw in the streaming service. I hope XBOX or PS3 picks this up so we can be able to watch it through either those consoles.
 
I would be tempted to get Prime. I had FREE prime with the MOM account over Thanksgiving and Xmas, and we had packages shipped everyday it seemed. I love the no minimum shipping...although, for $79, I doubt I would do it. I wish they offered a lifetime subscription or something...

I'm not sure how the two libraries compare, but Netflix is $95 per year (if you have it all 12 months). It seems well worth it for people who buy from Amazon a lot and also want some streaming services.

If you only order stuff once or twice a month, I have to question how much you're really saving with Prime. That's especially the case if any of those things you order are more than $25

From the sound of it, I probably order more stuff than you in a year but I'm willing to wait till I have $25 worth of stuff most of the time, and when I have to buy something right away (like a dotd) there's usually other things I need to buy anyway. I can't really think of many times besides around black friday where I truly missed having prime. I haven't had to pay a dime for shipping and I got almost everything I've wanted from Amazon. In a sense, not having prime has helped me save money. There are certain deals that are super cheap but I didn't really "need" them. With prime I would have likely bought them.
 
Also comparing Amazon VOD to Netflix is pretty stupid. They're not comparable and were not designed to be so. Compare Amazon VOD to Blockbuster or PPV, not to netflix,
 
Yeah, the selection seems pretty good. Makes me really consider getting a Prime membership, since I order a lot from Amazon, and the streaming would help cover holes in Netflix's selection.

Paying for both is still cheaper than cable, after all.

People shouldn't look at this as a comparison to Netflix, as it's something they're giving to people that spend the money on the Prime membership yearly versus the ones who get it free under Amazon Student or Amazon Mom.

Ok, but who has enough money to swing around? If predictions about VOD services become a standard, then all these movie studios enforcing a 28 day waiting period will suddenly want to see their stuff on VOD from day one. And believe me, they just won't hand it over, the highest bidder b/t Netflix, Redbox, Amazon, BB will have new releases day one on VOD.

I think from a price perspective, Amazon VOD wins. Every day they have a 99cent movie for rental that is pretty recent (like within 2 months of being released) Head over to Vudu..'oh, I can rent Once Upon a Time in America for today only for $4.99..' who wins there?

and also, ssjmichael, I think you need to get Prime! let go of the anxiety of having to get to $25 ;) I was really skeptical about dropping that much for the annual fee, but I've never looked back. Especially for us DVD/Game collectors, its a saving grace when you something is Prime eligible and only $10. But maybe a curse too b/c I spend/buy more that way!
 
correct me if I'm wrong, but this offer doesn't include everything in Amazon's VOD library right? I saw the offer say 5,000 Movies and TV shows. Is there a list of what's included?

Okay I've looked through most of the free movies and overall I have to say I'm pretty disappointed about the selection. Most of the examples I looked at are also available in the Netflix instant collection. I don't think that's a coincidence. I didn't see much of anything that was recent either and the TV show offerings are also lacking

If you already have prime then this is just a bonus and it doesn't matter, but I'm looking at it from the perspective of it being an offer to get me to subscribe to Prime and it definitely isn't enticing enough. My hope was that it would have had shows that Netflix was missing like say Dexter season 3 and 4. I'm on s2 of Dex and I'll likely have to buy the DVD sets of those. If Amazon included stuff like that then it would be a no-brainer to sign up for Prime.
 
I noticed some British TV shows that used to be on Netflix streaming but expired, that Amazon has.
Chef, Good Neighbours, Keeping Up Appearances, Yes Prime Minister.
 
Nice free addition for paying members. If it worked on PS3 or 360 like Netflix does it would be much cooler.

Do you not get disc rentals with netflix (i.e. streaming only plan).

I just rented the discs of the later Dexter seasons. I actually kind of prefer it that way as it breaks it up since I have the one disc at a time plan and doesn't end up being as much of a time sink.

Vs. buying the set and having it all on streaming where it's easy to blow a whole weekend watching a season--which puts me way behind on work etc.

I'm also on the 1-disc plan, but I just go through shows at a pretty slow rate. I usually watch like 1 episode of dexter a week depending on how I feel or how busy I am. Getting the disc would mean I'd have to watch about 4 episodes in a short period, or delay the rest of my queue. I usually return movies the next day after I get them.

I actually already bought season 3 used at gohastings for $11. That's not too bad and I can always resell it afterwards. That way I can watch it at my own pace (which I admit is slow) and still use my queue for movies.
 
Do NOT equate Amazon's NEW Instant Streaming with their current Video On Demand service -- like what I've read in previous posts.

You'll only be disappointed. How about even changing the thread title -- that is a bit misleading. Just a thought.

That makes sense.

I tend to watch all 4 episodes on a disc in one or two nights for a show I'm really into like Dexter.

I'm not a heavy renter though, I get through 1 or 2 discs a week max, and often have a disc for 2-3 weeks if I get busy with work and other hobbies. So I also don't mind delaying my queue if it takes me a while to finish a tv series.
 
Has anyone tried watching these through Xbox 360? I may be confusing their VOD which can be accessed by Xbox 360 and this new "instant streaming" option? Thanks for the info.
 
Not going to complain since I already pay for Prime.. I can't count how many times I was at the store like... $6 for batteries! I can get these for $4 on Amazon and went home or used my phone to order them 2nd day shipping :) My UPS guy must want to kill me. He brings like 3-4 amazon boxes a day.
 
You guys might also want to check your promotional balances for Amazon's VOD. Somehow I managed to rack up $25 in movie credits and I got another $5 when I registered my Panasonic TV. I'll definitely be trying it out. (Edit: It seems that promotional credit for buying video games also mix in with digital movies)

This feature is just another thing to love about Prime. I have a free Student Membership so I don't get the movies, but it's something cool to look forward to when my student membership expires and I have to start paying for it again.

Yeah, only issue I have with Netflix is a keep getting very long waits on new releases on blu ray. That combined with the 28 day wait to rent from some studios means 6+ weeks to get a new release sometimes.

But I don't mind much as if it was something I was dying to see I would have caught it in the theater. But that is one thing that irritates some people.
