The first episode of Grimm is now available for free worldwide. If you are in the US or Canada you can download it with GameTap player here or if you want the standalone version you can download it here.

If you have a machine that can run a theUnreal 3 Engine, have 30 spare minutes, games and want to marvel out how a game with hanging kids and burning teachers can get a T rating, you should check out Grimm.

Here's the site for more info.

I just beat it.

Its really entertaining ( I don't like Mcgee's games). very cool. Its like katamari meets a 3-d platformer.

Its only about 45 minutes long. Its got a few secrets here and there and you get scored based on your time, so its got some replayable value to it.

The story is bizarre and crude (but not over the top like most of Mcgee's game). Its got a very cool art design and while the music and sound effects are repetitive, they fit the style very well.

I want more puzzles, more action. But we shall see later in the chapters. The camera is good.

For some reason this thing has some decently high system requirements.

I don't know about paying money for this (maybe when its like 20-30 bucks for the whole series), but its definitely worth downloading for free (even if you like, or don't like Mcgee's work).

I only made it through the first level. Man, McGee has really lost it (not in a good way). I wish we could have something as sinister and twisted such as Alice rather than a toilet humor and crude platformer such as this. Really disappointed.

Also is anyone else having trouble with the sound (specifically Grimm's voice) one second the volue will be fine, than all of a sudden it lowers to the point that you can't even hear him?

This game does not tell you how to buttstomp.

It's really retarded. You buttstomp by pressing Jump twice.

Played through this twice now (second time was a speed run). It feels like a mix between Katamari and Battle Painters. It's definitely worth giving a chance since it's free.

Also, every Thursday a new episode will be released and will be free for the first 24 hours. So if you enjoy this, don't forget to play the rest of the episodes while they are free.

I get "Error: This game requires at least Shader Model 2.0" when trying to run it. Anything I can download or enable to fix this or can I just not play it? This is why I hate PC games for making high quality graphics a requirement and not an option. Valve games on the other hand rock cause they don't do this.

Shader 2.0 is most likely not supported by your video card. Most newer cards support it, but it just depends on what card you have.

You can't just download something to fix it though.
It's free forever, and every episode after that (released weekly) will be free for the first 24 hours
Seriously? Like a 24 hour period to just DL the game or a 24 hour period to play it? Also link!!!!

Loved episode 1, Make it smelly!!!! lol. Love grimms lines.
how long is it?
It's about 30 minutes watching both puppet theaters but there are leaderboard speed runs as low as 10 minutes on the site now.

Newer? Most cards from at least the past 5 years support Shader Model 2.0. My sub-$100 card from 3 years ago was 3.0c

2.0 is by no means a high requirement. You'd probably have to be rocking onboard video to not have it.

I'm not sure on the exact details, but I was given a press package to review and it came with the first 3 episodes, and a press sheet on the details.

Once the 24 hours are up, you can play it via GameTap (have to be GOLD) or you can buy it from Gametap.com
I get "Error: This game requires at least Shader Model 2.0" when trying to run it.
Crap. I'm getting the same thing. I've got a GeForce 4 Ti 4200, so no Shader Model 2.0. That sucks, I really wanted to try it out.

Too bad I won't be upgrading anytime soon.

is this still DLing slowly for people? Because I just DLed it with Download Accelerator Plus and it took like 45 seconds. Somebody before mentioned like 25 KB/s. I was going at 1500+ KB/s

Anyway, I'll definitely try this. Probably tomorrow.

Apparently the guys at Destructoid are lambasting this because it's the same crap over and over.

Anything in Episode 1 is basically the rest in the remaining 20+ episodes. It's repetitive tripe.

I'm inclined to agree.

You know if its free, I might enjoy it a bit anyway.

review.

He really doesn't like the dark humor, and I understand why he is worried about it just being to bizarre just to be bizarre I mean it is McGee. I have read some of the real Grimm brothers fairy tales and let me say some of the stuff in the game is nothing compared to the violence of the books

I think McGee made Grimm be angry (represents the actual Grimms) and he's is going around in modern fairy tail reality, based on how our culture interprets them, and the Grimm character is just trying to change them back to the way they were in the original stories.

I wanted to bump this thread because the next episode "little red riding hood" is available free today only. it has also been announced that the third episode "the fisherman and his wife" will be out in one week free for 24 hours.

Correct, Shader 2.0 is supported by even 'old' cards. To not be able to support that, you're either running crappy onboard video, or you've got a video card that's 5+ old.

On Topic: It was alright, I guess. American McGee just doesn't have "it" anymore.

Off Topic: Hey fatbot, is it true that you get payed by gametap to post about their games on forums?

No, I do work for them but this is my personal account that I had well before I ever worked for them. All my accounts are personal, and because of that they often have my personal opinions on it.

I just posted the McGee thing because its free and will be free on release day until it ends in March 09. I just figured it was worth mentioning. I get nothing special for it nor was anyone asking me to do it.

No, this is my personal account with my personal opinions which is why I don't start everything with "speaking as a GameTap employee". I started it well before I worked for them and will likely have it well after I work for them. I just firgured since Grimm is free on release day all year people might want to know. I also posted on other free games released around Christmas but most of my threads and posts are about my ever growing console needs.

wow,.. you really just took me back. That was the card I had in the machine I built circa 2001.... it was a great card until the fan gave up and it burnt itself out overnight... (happened after years). went out that day and bought a 5600 or something that was comparable in performance for like 50 bucks

I got the Ti 4200 for $65 + tax/shipping after it'd been on the market for a while...it was getting to the point that the games I wanted to play wouldn't play on the v550. So now I'm back to that point again, except now I need a whole new computer, not just a GPU upgrade. Sigh. I've been using this computer for 9-10 years. I've been wanting to get a new one for a long time, but, you know...bills, family, etc. I see no possible upgrades in the next few years... :(

Better start looking for another job, now that Turner is selling GameTap.

If it's a McGee game, I'll love it, hands down. Kinda like my unconditional love for Suda 51's games.

I actually forgot this was free... now, I need to update GameTap first, but I'll download it as soon as I can. Thanks, OP.

EDIT: Downloading now, about one minute left.
EDIT 2: Just finished playing through it. Pretty fun, I've gotta say. It's like Katamari for sadists. Controls are a bit clunky at times, mostly when trying to move by an object; I even occasionally got stuck on air and couldn't move forward until I let go of all keys, then started moving again. Loved the voices, the characters, the way Grimm explained the story at the end... Overall, I'm impressed.

Now I just hope that they're released in retail packs, 'cause I don't really want to pay for GameTap Gold just for these episodes...
