Welp, there we go
So essentially Friday rush hour in the eastern time zone. I would like to know the stats for that day on number of accidents caused by people trying to buy an Amiibo from their smartphone.

Well 4pm CST is when I get off work, guess I'll have to stay at my desk for a little while after. As long as I'm in the car by 4:20, I'm good ;)

The rush hour thing is probably by design.
If by design, you mean it's meant to fuck them up, then yeah I agree.

Oh well, not like I was expecting to get one anyways.... I still bet this will sell out in a flash. My location on the little map isn't gonna change that anyways.

are we assuming that it will be easy to just click the buy button at 2pm and check out and be done with it by 2:02? or is this gonna be an 5f cluster eff for 30 minutes of confusion only to walk away at 2:32 empty handed? lol

Just saw the 2D Mario Maker 30th Anniversary Amiibo and I absolutely need these! I hope I can obtain them without much hassle, I love and hate Nintendo so much for these damn things. They are so cool, but also pointless and the ones I want are almost always incredibly hard to find at retail price.

They should be up for at least 15-20min if not longer, but you never know.

Wonder what the odds are the U.S. will get the Super Mario Maker limited edition with the amiibo? I'm going to hold off on preordering it because many speculate it will most likely be released here & I want the amiibo since it does unlock stuff in the game from what I've read.

It could be the first time an Amiibo actually does something useful in a game! I'll probably pick up a regular Mario to get the unlocks though, I'll definitely keep any 8-bit Mario's I obtain sealed.

Yay, Just got back from Vacation in FL, Now that I am back, checked for more info on Animal Crossing Amiibo Festival. Gamestop finally lists it at 60$ with the 2x amiibos and cards. Cant preorder on Amazon, Gamestop OR Bestbuy now. Meaning, my reservation risk at BB when it launched... makes me happy to have it now. =D

Now... Im reading the 24th for another amiibo eh?

1. What makes you think regular Mario will work? I could see it going either way. Here's hoping it does.

2. If by "useful" you mean "unlocks Day 1 Disc Locked Content", then yes, it's very useful :wall:

This is a serious question I have for you. In your opinion what type of content should amiibo add to a game to make them worth the money/useful without it being day 1 disc locked content?

Do you even know how amiibo work in Super Mario Maker? The way they are implementing it is just fine. It's purely cosmetic.

Something that interacts with a game, maybe something that actually saves/loads and is more influential than "tap here to unlock"? SSB is the only example I've seen that does it even halfway right. I don't care about skins in MK8 so much since they were patched in and are just extra skins but locking us out of content in Splatoon and now Mario Maker is a dirty move. Literally the ONLY difference between this and the Day 1 DLC everybody pretends to hate so much is that with amiibo you have to go to the trouble to track down a figure you may or may not ever find.

If it were me I'd have unlocked the content for everybody and just sold the amiibo's as figures that don't impact the game at all, but then again I always did have a semblance of business ethics and cared about my customers, and that always did piss off some people.

For the skins it is "ok". I'd still argue they should be available for everyone to use but personally I can live without them. For the mega mushroom power-up and the additional filters, fuck no, there's nothing ok about locking that behind the amiibo paywall.

And since when is an extra power-up "purely cosmetic"?

So your idea is basically not have amiibo do anything in game at all and just be figures?

As far your idea as something that saves/loads, any ideas as to what that could be?

If Nintendo can't think of a use for them aside from disc locked content, then yes, just let them be figures. There's nothing wrong with that, and it still beats the junk that comes in most CE's these days. I mean honestly, does tapping an amiibo once in Hyrule Warriors to unlock the Spinner or once in Splatoon to unlock extra missions really increase your enjoyment anymore than if it were just unlocked from the get-go?

SSB is the closest I can think of. I can't think of a legitimate reason for a game like Mario Maker to need it's own unique amiibo, but then again why does every game have to have them to begin with? It looks cool, and including it in a CE is great, I just don't like that they are punishing people who don't purchase it (or, more realistically, can't find the damn thing).

I guess the question is why does it have to unlock anything at all as opposed to just being a cool little CE statuette?

Well I mean it is nice that one amiibo can unlock multiple things across games. Smash amiibo could have just been for smash but instead they release games that make use of them.

As far as mario maker goes I wouldn't be shocked if any mario unlocks the power up.

It depends on the situation and the use. It sucks for Codename Steam because who can even find a Fire Emblem amiibo? I don't care about the skins that much so those don't bother me, but I am not everybody and skins are a big deal and add replayability for some people so it sucks for them.

Here's hoping the standard Mario unlocks everything, at least then the Mega mushroom will be much more widely available. I don't want to see it's use limited in the user-generated levels I DL simply because nobody can access it.

Im not sure why you think the mario marker amiibo will be rare. None of the mario amiibo have been rare outside of gold mario and they were made to be like that

They aren't selling this amiibo outside the CE edition are they? And isn't it supposed to be much bigger than the ones in the SSB line?

It's Nintendo, who knows what they will do, but I wouldn't be surprised if it became impossible to find a day or two after release just like Splatoon's amiibo. Then again 8-bit Mario has a much wider appeal so maybe it will be everywhere? I can't even begin to guess either way lol.

Im pretty sure they are. They have shown both in individual packaging.

It's really funny when Nintendo fanatics pretend that all the "DLC" for amiibo isn't just shoehorned into the games. As if there's meaningful content that justifies the price, the interactivity experience, and separating it from the purchase of the game.

Yep. Exactly. It's just another gimmick like PS move, 3D, Kinnect, VR, or anything else. I'm mostly with rcerboss on the DLC thing. Which reminds me of an excellent editorial I read on Kotaku awhile back:

The amiibo problem: http://kotaku.com/the-amiibo-problem-1702811182

"Nintendo is famous for making Mario and Zelda games, and for making them great. But to understand the full spirit of Nintendo, follow the plastic. It’s fundamental to their history. Notice, back in the early 1980s, the longtime toy-maker reviving the video game industry after a gaming crash by selling a console bundled with a plastic robot and an extra controller shaped like a gun. Examine the bric-a-brac in the trunk of a true Nintendo collector: the two-way speaker that was bundled with an Animal Crossing, the microphone packed with a Mario Party, the conga drums designed to control a bevy of Donkey Kongs. Consider the Game Boy Camera and the Game Boy Printer. Spot the controller shaped like a bathroom scale and the plastic pretzel of a steering wheel bundled with a Mario Kart."

Put me firmly in the "let's not sit here and pretend these are anything but plastic video game figures" crowd.

"Press a $13 Mario Amiibo to any of seven different Nintendo games and something will happen in each of those games. That same thingwon’t happen if you don’t own the right Amiibo. If you want an excellent special item in a new Zelda game, you’ll have to buy a plastic Link figure. You can’t pay for a code to unlock it. You need the toy. It wasn’t enough that you bought the game. What will be the next thing Nintendo prevent you from playing if you don’t buy—or find—an Amiibo next?"

There was an IGN video a few weeks back where they asked this specific question, and while the Nintendo representative kind of danced around it by addressing that Yarn Yoshi amiibo would work the same way as any Yoshi amiibo in other games, it somewhat confirmed that any Mario will work. Somewhat. Still up for debate I guess, but I kind of think any Mario will work.

For the skins it is "ok". I'd still argue they should be available for everyone to use but personally I can live without them.
They are available to everyone. Using amiibo will unlock them automatically, but you can unlock them through playing the game normally.

For the record: I also agree that these are cheap DLC unlocks but, you know what? I'm happy to pay for them, because it's a physical DLC unlock I will always have. If/when the memory in my system becomes unreadable, I will always have something to unlock it (and even if my reader/chip stops working, I'll always have the figure). Can we say the same for all the DLC on other systems people buy down the road? Hell no.
But again, I'd much rather a lot of the content that is unlocked just be part of the original price. I miss the days when a newly released game was always a full game. Since we can't have it that way anymore, I'm okay with this form of DLC.

Ugh missed AC amiibo fest from bb. Says coming soon aka "sold out". What're the odds that they won't carry the game + amiibo at all if you didn't preorder, bc I don't think they are selling the game by itself anyways so it would have to be the bundle?

You try pre-ordering in store?

Ill be missing out on Friday. I'll be at work, and most likely won't be able to time my breaks out so that I can get in on it.

You can just grab your ass with a wide eye and tell your boss that you have to go. Start sprinting and he or she should understand.

Out of curiosity, is this a game you actually want or are you just after the bundled amiibo?

As much as I love Animal Crossing, what we've seen so far of this game looks unbelievably boring. Like Mario Party without any minigames, just moving around the board with random consequences. I wouldn't mind getting my hands on those AC amiibo though.

I have been trying to find Olimar at any Amazon place overseas that will ship here. I found one for 12.60 Euro but the shipping is 14.42 Euro. So, for $30.69 total it can be mine. Deicisons, decisions, decisions.

Bowser Jr. and Dr. Mario are already on their way here. This is the only one I need for now. I need to throw my extra Ganon, Palutena, Fox and Shulk up on eBay to get something back.

Im sure most of the people buying Amiibo are buying them first as a figure and anything else 2nd.

I don't think a figure is a gimmick really.
Pretty much. Nintendo has great characters and these things are just "cheap" enough that you can buy them without too much hesitation and when you have a few of them together they look fantastic - really goes back to SSBM. It's toys for adults and I for one am perfectly okay with it. Given how rare some of them are I think Nintendo is going about things well in regards to how much content Amiibo unlock.

Man. I saw the 2pm at first and was a tad relieved as I wouldn't be at a funeral during that time... but then I saw it said PST which means 5pm EST... service starts at 4pm. Looks like I'll have to ask around to find someone who isn't getting one for themselves already! Obviously the funeral is much more important Though if I see a family member frantically mashing their phone screen and swearing under their breath at 5:01, I can oust them as a closet amiibo-hunter! :)

Im saying it will be up for at least an hour if not longer
Nah. The entire amiibo population of NA all trying to access the ENTIRE stock of one retailer exclusive amiibo at the same time, on a Friday evening... last time anything even close happened like that was Ness @GS and we all remember how that went! I give Amazon a bit more leeway and credit, but even with the Lucina/Robin hunting their site was hammered and they were last to put it up (meaning the vast majority of amiibros who had already secured one didn't bother trying for another). This is not going to go well, though I'd like to remain optimistic.

Amazon servers are way head of gamestop lol. Gamestop site locks up when they put one game on sale for $10.

Its limit one per. They will have a ton more Palutena then they did Lucina and Robin and even Wario, Pac-man Charizard.

Its going to go fine. You guys are just freaking out over nothing.

Actually now that I think about it, even with the system lock up people were able to order Ness for some time the day they went up. Only Lucina and Robin sold out fast.
