Upright. Think of the airbrushing you could get someone to do on the sides.

upright because you can do multiplayer easier, right i mean they are all standing in front of the screen. but if you do the cocktail, everybody is sitting on their own side of the table right?

MAME supports screen flipping for 2 player games. The only issue would be for 2 player simultaneous games but even then you could add a third control panel along the side to handle that.... like I did!

My parents have an authentic Centipede cocktail arcade game....it's pretty darn cool. It's nice because ti does not take up too much space and you can SIT to play it. Some games you can stand there for hours and play and the comfort level in sitting is great. I played Centipede for hours at times after getting the high score.

However, upright is cool too...more authentic to arcades. They are usually large though. Depends what you are going for. I like cocktail though for space reasons.

Do a cocktail one. That way you have somewhere to set your drink while you're playing. Personally, I don't think I'd play an arcade game for long periods of time if I had to stand up the whole time. Then again, if you do go with an upright, you could just have a barstool or something too...

id say go upright. It would have more of an arcade feel. However, im partial to upright since I have back problems and if it was a cocktail I wouldnt be able to sit on a stool for extended periods of time.

i say upright - it'll be good conversation piece and there's more things you can do with the actual cabinet.

plus multiplayer with friends upright is just boss.

I say upright. If you ever decide to change the game inside, you'll have a lot more options as to what you can slap in there, imho.

I'd say a cocktail so you can use it as a breakfast table as well. To any girl, an upright screams "geeky little boy".

If you ever want to get laid again, get something thats cool, but something you want... if you get an upright, you'd find 2 women interested out of 100... but a cocktail is cute and fun.... at least 80% women would think a cocktail is interesting.

If you worry about viewing angle, you could always make a cocktail with the screen under the glass at an angle... that way it looks right at you.

It doesnt have to LOOK like a cocktail.... it can be whatever... I say go crazy.

Upright

Because it is more traditional (ie, more like what most ppl associate with arcades) and you can sit on a stool or stand, so you have 2 options

OR

Environmental

Such as the Tron on page 1......you can sit down, but it is still more like most stand up arcade machines......plus it just looks awesome....

Not Cocktail

You have to sit, no choice, plus not as traditional as most people think of arcades

upright, who cares if cocktail can double as a table. You're using it to play games dag nabbit!

EDIT: crap, just though of something: you're having coffee with a stranger with the on the cocktail table, with a cover over it and casually mention if "they would like to play a little game?" when they finally say "okay" you whip off the cloth and throw it to the ground in one sweeping motion, revealing the cabinet while there's a "swooosh" sound in the background. At that point, you say a one liner like "let's play" or something equally malicious

you would be the coolest supervillain ever...

(...although you would have to play something thats kind of crappy 2p, the kind where you have to go guy-by-guy, instead of a badass fighting game)

cocktail only seems appropriate for early games like pacman and that black and white football game with the X's and O's

Cocktail, because it could double as a coffee table. Depends what games you're putting on it though. If you're all about Centipeds and Ms. Pacman, definitely the cocktail. If you're more into the Street Fighter, then you'll want to go with the upright.

If you are a Cocktail lover then get your votes in if you want to see me drink I mean build one or it looks like the Upright Citizens Brigade will win. Just a friendly reminder that the contest will end July 4th and someone will walk away with a new DS/GBA game so get your votes and comments in now.

Go for the upright...because a cocktail could double as a coffee table. A cocktail (unless you have a dedicated gaming room) is just going to end up as another surface to pile shit onto. The only positive is that you can sit at it and you can very easily get some bar stools for the upright machine if you're absolutely hellbent on sitting to play.

Upright, all of my nostalgic gaming experiences have been with upright cabinets, man i spent hours in front of em...

i've never even played on a cocktail arcade machine myself, but I imagine bending over one for long periods of time wouldn't be too fun.

I voted for a cocktail cabnet basically because I remember playing the Ms. Pacman one and I loved just sitting there and having the controls tucked just under the top of the box and not really straining to see the screen. I also think that it's a huge positive to have it double function as a small table. I think that the upright is a little easier to build but then again who doesn't like a good challenge?

I've seen fairly compact units that are upright but shorter, so one can use a bench or chairs instead of a barstool to play. This seems like the choice that would provide optimal comfort, but if forced to pick between an upright or cocktail cabinet, I'd be all over the cocktail :)

I'd go with upright. You can pick up a stool somewhere for cheap and sit on that, plus an upright is usually associated with arcade more than a cocktail for the general population. Plus, I've never liked looking down at the screen for cocktails..

Upright! My buddy has one of Area 51 and it is crazy! It's pretty sweet getting completely trashed and playing it.
