Anime and Manga Thread Vol. 1: Visions of a God
For starters? I wouldn't recommend Eva, or Nausicaa though I've only seen the anime for each. Monster however, is a sure bet. The manga is much better than the anime.
You wouldn't recommend them, but you haven't read them? Thanks for your input, now shut the fuck up. :D
InB4 "OMG D. GRAY-MAN IS CRAP, YOU KNOW NOTHING BOUT ANIMESSSS". This stuff reminds me of a shirt I had around 10 years ago. It read, "Your favorite band sucks." People would get irritated and say, "What's your favorite band then, asshole?" I'd just smile and say, "I'm mostly into the same stuff you are."
The rest of your post, followed by this, is pretty hilarious.

Are you gonna tell me Nausicaa and Eva are WAY different mangas that somehow aren't totally mediocre like the anime are?

The "your fav anime sucks" was somewhat sarcastic in case the humor was lost on peeps, hence it being followed by a welcoming to the thread. I do feel that ways about some of the stuff on his list, but exaggeration for the sake of humorous hyperbole is the going currency around these parts. Some people don't even read entire posts before replying. Let's try an experiment.

KIRIN LEMON WISHES HE WAS UTENA. HE WOULD MAKE OUT WITH DUDES, AND GO ON AND ON ABOUT REVOLUTIONS....IN JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL.

Lol, this thread is now new and exciting.

Anyway, does anyone have anything to say about the Darkstalkers manga? I'm on a DS kick (along with my CT and MR kicks) and noticed they released a manga for it last year. Just want to know if it's decent.

On the same video game/manga note, anyone read the Zelda mangas?
Are you gonna tell me Nausicaa and Eva are WAY different mangas that somehow aren't totally mediocre like the anime are?
Actually, yeah.

SOME DAYS I DO WISH I WAS UTENA. That part about making out with dudes is true, too.

This reply is full of unexpected magic.

So really...Eva manga, huh? Really...I've never heard anyone recommend it at all. Perhaps I'll actually have to look into this more instead of settling for Kazushi Sakuraba breaking an AT field on his way to the ring.

It's quite good. The artwork is amazing, and the story is more concise, with far less of the "pretentious" stuff you dislike. Obnoxious characters (Shinji) are less obnoxious, and events play out differently, to the benefit of the material.

One of my favorite parts of the NGE manga is the battle with Unit 3. It end just the way I thought it should have in the anime
I Just wish we got to see Hikari reaction to the news
. I should go pick up vol 9 soon. It took so long to come out over here I completly forgot about it.

Do you have books 10 and 11, at least?

Nope, I'll have to make a note to pick them up during rightstuf's next Viz sale. Like I said it took so long for 9 to come out I forgot there was a NGE manga until the side stories(Or whatever you call them) came out(Girlfriend of Steel and the Shinji Ikari raising Project).

I read up to like vol. 8 or 9 of the Evangelion manga. They used to have them at my local library. They did take forever to get those last couple out... I don't even remember what happened now so I'd have to read them all again. I do remember liking it as much as or even almost more than the show though. One of the few mangas I've ever read...

Bad news, I'm afraid - RightStuf doesn't even stock books 4, 8, 9, and 10. They *do* carry 11, though. Why on earth would Viz let these books go out of print?

I could check my local Borders... And if they don't have them I guess I'll just have to find some other way to read those volumes of NGE.

I'm actually going to make a post in the anime thread for once, lol.

Back in late high school and most of my early college years, I use to watch a ton of anime. Mostly Gundam Wing, Seed, Evangelion, Full Metal Alchemist, Naruto, Bleach, Death Note, and many more. But since my busy years of college (last years) and just getting off college, I haven't kept up with anime as much as I use to. Right now I'm getting back into watching anime more, watching episodes of older anime I didn't finish and such. However, I would like to know some of the newer anime out (which have been out for around 3 years or newer, that I can watch in English) I should look into watching? I definitely want to get caught up again. Even bought some anime box sets on Amazon as of late. :)

I'm a huge fan of Beck. It's about a band. Pretty awesome. Also, Eureka Seven is like my favorite show ever, but seems like you've already seen that (from your Renton avatar before, heh :p). I've been watching Kurau Phantom Memory lately and that's pretty good too...

For more slice-of-life stuff, Genshiken is good. It's about an anime/manga club, basically, haha. Also, I think you'd like Welcome to the NHK, which is about a hikikomori (basically, an introvert with agorophobia who stays in his apartment all day). A bit weird at times, but it's a great original show.

Other stuff that I've heard good things about but haven't seen: Baccano, Code Geass, Gankutsuou, Soul Eater, Gurren Lagann

Please consider purchasing Kurau Phantom Memory! It originally aired in 2004, and it was released in North America in 2007; it sort of fits your requirement, but don't let that stop you. Also, the English dub is fantastic; not only is it one of my favorite English dubs, but it is also one of my favorite shows. I highly recommend it.

I've seen some Code Geass, but not much Gurren Lagann. Gurren Lagann should be something I'd like.

I second Genshiken and Welcome to the NHK. Wasn't a fan of Eureka 7 even though I finished it. I just kept expect shit to get WAY real and it really doesn't. Gankutsuou is terrific! Highly recommended.

Same exact reason why I like it. :)

I just watched a short film by Robot called La Maison en Petits Cubes. It has gorgeous art and animation; it looks sort of like a moving painting, and it's in a Western art style rather than a Japanese art style. It's about this old man who has to keep building on top of his house in order to stay above the rising sea level. I cannot reveal more than that because it would be a damn shame to spoil a film this phenomenal. It has a touching and moving story; it's about life, living through life, and what's it's like to look back on your past. This film has no dialog, and it puts other shows or films to shame; there are a lot of subtle details that aid in completing the experience.

I urge people to watch La Maison en Petits Cubes.
Amazingly trite, maybe.
I find that BL's more western focused characters and international flavor really combat the notion of it being trite. I didn't really want to like this series since I'm no fan of gun shows/tough girl shows but it really wound up charming everyone I know.

I think this is really worth checking out and seeing if it can sink its hooks into you.

In other news D. Gray-man did some fugged up shiz last night. I like this show when stuff happens.

Yup, I watched La Maison en Petits Cubes on Crunchyroll, and since I have a subscription, I watched it in 720p. I know most of you don't have a Crunchyroll subscription, but it would behoove you to watch it in 720p.

I disagree; since I have a subscription I am able to watch shows as they air in Japan, and I am able to watch shows in 720p, as long as that show has a 720p stream, which happens to be the case most of the time. There are also plenty of shows to watch that have previously aired, and most of those are not licensed for a DVD release in North America, so a Crunchyroll subscription is the only legal avenue if I want to watch these shows without advertisements and in a high resolution.

According to wannabe porn site Sankaku Complex, 2chan has identified two kinds of otaku: Type A and Type B. Here's the breakdown of their qualifications for each catagory:

Type A

A person who simply enjoys “anime.”

Is proud of Japan’s anime.

Evaluates anime based on direction, voice acting, art, etc.

Hates shallow anime with no real content.

Story emphasis >>>>> Moe anime.

A recent example would Higashi no Eden. Fans of anime who like Lain or Ghost in the Shell would probably be this kind.

Type B

A person who simply enjoys “characters.”

Will watch an anime if it includes cute or beautiful characters.

Doesn’t care if story is awful, as long as the characters are of interest.

Evaluates anime based on which seiyuu are in it and what the characters look like.

Loves moe elements. Doesn’t like complex anime.

The otaku the media picks up on are usually this kind.

Doesn’t know that much about anime and so is often criticized by Type A otaku.

However, they make much better customers than the more discerning Type A otaku.

Recently there has been a huge increase in anime targeted at Type B otaku.

People who like K-ON!, Queen’s Blade, Strike Witches and so on would be in this class.

I loved Black Lagoon, can't wait for the OVA if they're ever going to announce details on it.
It would also behoove you not to pay for a Crunchyroll subscription.

I still have my free one for another two months, maybe i'll watch it.
Because they license things and just stream them, no DVD release.
Crunchyroll only licenses anime for streaming on their website. Other companies are still able to license the same anime for a North American DVD release. For example, Crunchyroll licensed Glass Mask for streaming in April of last year, and Sentai Filmworks licensed Glass Mask for a DVD release in October of last year. If you were implying that Crunchyroll should be releasing these shows on DVD themselves, then you are being unrealistic. I don't think their company structure or their business model would allow that. Also, they probably couldn't afford starting up a DVD branch.

If you don't care for Crunchyroll because you don't like streaming anime, then I can understand that sentiment, but if you simply dislike them for not releasing their anime on DVD, then you are being unfair and unrealistic.

However, I agree with you that their unlicensed-for-DVD anime needs to get licensed for a DVD release. Somebody needs to license Erin The Beast Player for a DVD release sometime this year!

One example's not enough. :nottalking:
No, I wasn't implying that Crunchyroll should release DVDs. I just couldn't think of an example where a series streamed and then got released on DVD (of course, there are plenty of the oppposite). But, since you say there is one, I'll believe you.
Or I just think that, at least, Crunchyroll's streaming a series hurts its chances at a DVD release. Because a company might think that it has been streaming already for months so that would hurt sales.

Plus I just don't like the idea of paying to stream stuff. It would be a bit different if I could stream it to my TV easily similar to Netflix.

Well, shows like Tower of Druaga, Blassreiter, Linebarrels of Iron and Strike Witches all still got licensed by Funimation after streaming on Crunchyroll first.

Of course, Funi streams stuff on their website too, not quite as new, but its dubbed and free... and its easy to hook a laptop up to an HDTV, heh.

i don't really feel like i'm a type A or B anime fan. i have some elements of type A but i don't need every show to have pretentious WHAT IS A MAN?!? crap constantly strung through out it. sometimes i just want cool powers, badass heroes, devious villians, and fun times.

For many years my favorite anime was Fushigi Yuugi. It's the only really expensive box set that I own. I've watched lots of dudes break down crying while watching it, believe it or not. It also totally got me action with a J-girl. I think it's a good blend of story and action with one of the most devious and well-written villains ever. It could use some better art and design elements to be sure and it probably hasn't aged well, but it'll always be a good memory for me.

Indecisive Rattle just brought up some more examples.

Anyway, you bring up an interesting point. It is quite possible that a show's chance for a DVD release could become compromised by being licensed for streaming first. Unfortunately, we will never know the truth behind this. Also, don't forget the converse perspective; a particular show may never have a chance for a DVD release, but it could be licensed for streaming since that option would be much more cost-effective.

You are exactly right. I didn't even realize that Tower of Druaga, Blassreiter, Linebarrels of Iron, and Strike Witches were licensed for streaming on Crunchyroll before Funimation licensed them for a DVD release. However, Strike Witches is the only show from that list that Crunchyroll no longer offers. I don't know the reasons behind its removal, but it may be similar to how Crunchyroll streams Fairy Tail—Crunchyroll is contractually obligated to remove an episode of Fairy Tail after 30 days from its air date.

The counter-perspective doesn't matter to me because if I'm going to bother watching something on my computer, I'm just going to download the fansubs.

What is crunchyroll? I only know of it from the constant name drops that Razzuel makes, so I don't know if it's official like Hulu or if they just download fansubs and charge for others to watch it over the internet from their site.

They used to do the latter, but not anymore. That's sort of why I'm against them, actually - they built their site and started making money off the work of other people.

Thanks.

I knew a Naruto fansite that featured a premium membership that let you directly download the fansubbed episodes of various anime that other people made along and it blew my mind that people were willing to pay that guy for the work others did.

Finished up Chobits today. I'm kind of split on this one. I enjoyed some parts, disliked others, and was bored at some points, too. The main character freaked out over every little thing:
Like the episode where he, Chii, Shinbo and Sumomo went into an online game and he would freak out just because Chii ended up in another server. Seriously? It's just a game, guy. RELAX.
and would go into a bout of whining and moaning, something that definitely lessens the enjoyment of the show.

I apologize if this isn't the right thread, but I'm actually looking for some anime recommendations. I've been into anime for a few years now, but there just seems to be so much good stuff out there that it gets a bit overwhelming sometimes.

Some series that I've liked:
Cowboy Bebop
Trigun
Hellsing
X
Samurai Champloo
Death Note
Wolf's Rain
Blood+

Any quality shows (or movies) that you guys have in mind would be awesome.
Type A is contradictory. Someone who simply enjoys "anime" should be able to find the merits in any series and appreciate it.
