Anime and Manga Thread Vol. 1: Visions of a God

Yeah, they don't even say Eureka's name quite right in the dub. You really should watch the subbed version of that show, IMO.

I started watching Beck last night (the dub, as recommended). I love it so far.

I finished watching Speed Grapher, Steamboy, and Voices of a Distant Star.

Speed Grapher was awesome. I was surprised with the premise of the show since I didn't have any expectations.
It is basically about this virus that transforms the carrier into their deepest desires. The main character ends up being able to blow things up with a shot of his camera.
Some parts of the show frustrated me, but it's not really a real complaint.
The whole show was based around conflict, but there were sometimes glimpses of happiness for Saiga and Kagura. I wanted more happy times with Saiga and Kagura, but that's not the type of show this is anyway.
At least in the end
Saiga and Kagura are together and happy.

I loved Steamboy; the animated rendition of 19th century England was really unique and fresh; plus I think they were able to seemlessly integrate computer generated graphics and hand drawn art. I really liked the animation/visuals of the movie. The action scenes were really intense too; I really liked when Ray flew around on that flying thing of his.

Voices of a Distant Star was good; it wasn't as powerful as 5 Centimeters Per Second, but the story was good in it's own right. I like the idea of space travel and the passing of time. One of the Ender's Game books had the same concept; when Ender travels from one planet to the other, many years pass by for everyone else, while Ender only loses a few hours.

Oh, and if anyone cares, I made an anime list on that My Anime List website: http://myanimelist.net/animelist/Razzuel

I just finished Beck. This is one of the best shows I've ever seen.

I feel like I was definitely the target audience... everything about it was awesome.
It was an anime show, but it didn't feel very anime-ish at all. It's just good. Damn good.

^^My friend really likes the manga. But he doesn't get out much so basically whenever I see the next volume, I pick it up for him. Anyway, I flipped through it once quickly and it seemed... odd. Also, I wasn't a fan of the art style. Anyway, all I remember is the substitute music teacher had a very short skirt. ;)

Dude, even though I just finished it, I honestly want to rewatch the whole thing right now. (I won't do that though because that just devalues it, I think). It's definitely something else. Yeah, maybe I'll read the manga too, although it might be hard to do without any actual music, heh. It must be different from the anime because it's 13 volumes and the anime is only 26 episodes, so it might be worth it.

Seriously though, it's going to be hard for me to watch anything else now though, haha. Know what I mean?

I just finished The Place Promised in Our Early days. I thought the movie was wonderful and beautiful. I love Makoto Shinkai's visual style; all the scenes in the movie are gorgeous. Even though his movies are all about love over some large boundary, I still think each movie has it's own place; they use that one concept as the base and expand on it. They are able to expand on it in interesting ways that I find enjoyable; I love the stories in his movies.

There is one thing that has been bugging me about the end of the movie:
At the end of the movie Hiroki and Sayuri are finally together again; they can now start their relationship anew. However, at the beginning of the movie we are shown Hiroki as an adult. He goes to the old warehouse where the plane was built, and reminisces about Sayuri and their promise. When he thinks of Sayuri, she is shown as a teenager. So, what happened to Sayuri?! Something obviously happened to her because she isn't with Hiroki in the end. The beginning of the movie seems to imply that she has passed away, but the movie ends with them in the cockpit of the plane, happy that they are finally together again after that long period of time.

I've watched Beck through a few times and it's still one of my favorites, as I notice things each time I watch it through. I'd love to read the manga, but it feels like Beck could be one of the few manga that's better as an anime since it's about music.

I ordered a few anime DVD's from Amazon today for their sale. I got Dead Leaves for $11 since I loved it the first time I saw it and would love to be able to share it with friends now. I also got the first two season sets of Yu Yu Hakusho for about $50 total, which is a pretty good price for me considering that it has just over 50 episodes up the best part of the show, the Dark Tournament. I'm not sure if I'd go much further beyond that, as it gets a bit insane before it lost me in its Toonami run when it became a DBZ clone, crazy hair and all.

I've read the first two volumes of the Honey and Clover manga. I thought it was cute, but nothing really seemed to happen.

In other news, Viz is starting a Shonen Sunday imprint for their manga now. So, things like Inu-Yasha is going to show the Shonen Sunday seal from now on. I hope this means they'll license some older works from the magazine, mostly Ushio and Tora.
Yeah, that's sorta how I felt when I watched Black Lagoon.
Strangely, sorta how i felt after watching Elfen Lied. It was so good =/

Also, i've decided that Beck is next. I watched the first episode just to get a feel for the show, and after your praise (and how i blindly trusted you on Suzuka and it worked out), i'm going for it.

It also helps that i've been getting into music the past few days, but you'll know more about that soon ;).

Everytime I see someone mention Elfen Lied, I know how Kirin feels everytime I mention anything I like (bar the RoD OVA and maybe..... ummm.. no that's it).

Heh.

But at least we can agree on this one - Elfen Lied is remarkably terrible. I'm always shocked when somebody says they liked it. How is that even possible? Is it the violence? The boobies? The vapid female characters? It's just SO bad!

(Ditto for Suzuka on this, too. I can *sort* of see why people are drawn to Black Lagoon, despite its many, many flaws.)

I hate you.

Just kidding, haha. I can kind of see why people would hate Suzuka. I think it only really appeals to a certain age group/demographic. Oh yeah, and Suzuka can be pretty annoying sometimes (both the character and the situations that happen). I think that's kind of the point, though. I still love it.

Also, Dead Leaves sounds like an awesome name for a movie, heh. I might have to check that out.

About damn time, the preliminary Otakon schedule is up. I'm seeing a lot more this time around panel wise I want to go to, the Naruto panel should be pretty funny since the manga is sucking so much right now. Kinda disappointed though at some of these same movies and shows as last year still be played in the video room.

Elfen Lied had a great story to me, it all fit so well, and i really liked the characters a lot. It made me feel happy, scared, and fucking freaked out
little boys being chopped up into pieces....
, and it all came together nicely (as a whole i mean, the ending was awful).

I can definitely see why people don't like Suzuka, but i liked it. There were times when i think it was a little too drawn out, and if you didn't like the characters then it probably sucked since that's all the show had going for it.

I can also see why you don't like like Black Lagoon (as in your reasons are actually decent), but it basically took the best parts of anime's and made something great out of it. Also, the first arc of the second season was epic.

See, that's the thing. It's the type of show I *should* like, but it does everything all wrong. The characters are beyond obnoxious, the situations are contrived... everything's been done before, and far, far better. I wanted to like it, but it kept finding new ways to frustrate the crap out of me.

Dark_Sage's Fabulous Animu Review:
Shoujo Kakumei Utena
Episode 1

Okay, five minutes in, you'll get the gist. Utena is a chick flick for lesbians. An "anything guys can do, girls can do better" circle jerk (schlick?) of epic proportions constrained only by a shoe-string budget. For an anime in the 80s, this would be a fantastic achievement, but for something made in '97, you'd think they could do a bit better. It wouldn't be a stretch to say that arming me with a video camera and the manga would make for a better-animated show.

You think it's a stretch to say I could do better than this?

The character designs are uninspired and drab. Basically all you'll get out of them is that everyone is anorexic. It's not quite to the Clamp "these are stick people" level, but it's getting close. The only interesting looking character is a villain named Zoisite.

And why is he a villain? Well, it's basically because he treats girls like shit. Unlike in real life where girls are attracted to douches like that, in Utenaland that's totally not cool. So Utena, or whatever the hell the pink-haired girl's name is, goes off to challenge Sir Zoisite to a duel! Kettou da! Spoilers: Pinky wins by slashing him with a broken wooden sword while his fancy-ass sword of heaven or w/e it is can do nothing against her magical schoolboy outfit.

Ah, yes. The absolutely terrible characters. You've got the girl who wants to be a guy for... I dunno, some childhood memory of a guy being cool? Then there's the other girl who's basically the school's baton. Mind you, these are the leading ladies. There are the other stock villains, who are villains for none other than that they are part of the student council. Yes, the student council.

I'm sorry. The show's terribad. Don't watch it. Kirin, you must've been smoking some pretty heavy stuff to call this show anything close to good.

Final Rating: 1.5 Sages out of 5

Son, you just unleashed a shitstorm. Utena is still fantastic - but your review sure did suck. It's amazing how off-base you were about so many aspects of the show. I suppose I can understand your criticism about the animation (it improves), but the visual style of the show is remarkable, and the characters have depth beyond most anime out there. Congratulations on judging Utena by its first episode, which is nowhere near representative of its true nature, though. Here's some awesome stuff you won't be seeing later:

Ok... episode 2 may have been slightly better. But if they reuse the whole "walking up stairs" thing again as their time waster, I'm going to be quite pissed.

Sorry, the "Zettai Unmei Mokushiroku" segment is there for the majority. Repetition is often the nature of the shoujo beast, especially in the 90's. The song is great, but yeah, the animation is a bit dull. Thankfully, they *really* spice it up for the final third of the series:

Episode 7 is really where Utena starts bearing its true fangs. Episode 9, as well. It likes to get most of the lighter moments out of the way early, so it can deliver plenty of twists and surprises later on.

Only one I've seen off of that list so far is Princess Tutu which is great. Great music, the story is a little slow in the beginning but gets better as it goes on. It's one of my favorites and probably somewhere on my top 10 list for anime.

Those are the ones i've heard of that were good. Everyone here will probably recommend Princess Tutu, and without watching it, i'd probably guess it's the best one there, but i've heard good thing about Shana too, and Xam'd certainly looked interesting.

I was just going to ask about Darker than Black... saw the "trailer" if you will.... any good? looks like something I might dig.

Awesome! Maybe through are combined brain power, we will be able to figure out what exactly happens during the ending.

Wait, what do you mean in high definition? The Place Promised in Our Early Days was only released on DVD in North America; unless you are talking about the Japanese Blu-ray, but that doesn't have any English subtitles.

I was searching for an answer on other websites like IMDB and Anime News Network, but either no one knows the answer or no one is even talking about that part of the ending.

Just watched Cowboy Bebop the movie. I was kinda disappointed. I felt like I was about to fall asleep for most of the first half of it. It got better (and the fight scenes were awesome), but overall it was a letdown for me compared to the series. Anime movies never seem to be as good as the shows they were based off... Maybe I didn't like it as much because I just watched Beck, I dunno, heh.

Also, thanks Razzuel for showing me this song "Duvet" by Boa (UK) (opening to Lain)

The band is actually pretty good all around. They have a few others good songs too, although that is their best IMO. The singer is Paul Rogers' daughter (the singer from Bad Company).

I couldn't get enough of that song when I watched Lain; Duvet is fucking brilliant!

Black Lagoon is worth watching just for the lollercaust of janglish present.

Even though I don't like most of the stuff Kirin is into, I remember finding Utena addicting after awhile. Then it ended and I made a :\ face and said, "That's it?" As I've mentioned a ton of anime left me feeling that way. Hell I just watched the movie "The Strangers". It left me feeling the same way. So did Fable 2 for that matter.

Everytime a writer doesn't write an ending God spends 20 minutes explaining the technique he is going to use to give a kitten 10,000 years of pain.

Darker Than Black pulled me in instantly. It's gritty, dark, mysterious and has all the makings of a decent thriller. The characters are interesting and have real motivations and interests and kept me engaged throughout what I've seen thus far.

Unfortunately, the storytelling and plot meanders everywhere except where you want it to go. Wasted potential.
