Anime & Manga Thread Vol. 2: Za Warudo!!!

Haven't seen the two in bold. I will check it out. "Girl who leapt through time" was good too.
I was never a fan of Summer Wars, but everyone else seems to think it's the second coming. Girl who lept through time was good though. I have Wolf Children on BD sitting on my coffee table waiting to be watched. I may wait until I feel really upbeat before I watch it though as I don't really like a downer.

Also RE: 7 deadly sins, I stay away from the manga so I'm not spoiling the plot for the animu. I re-watched it recently to get myself prepped for the new season coming soon.

Without spoiling anything Wolf Children has some struggle in it. But ultimately you walk away feeling good. But I agree, you have to be in the right mood to watch a movie like that.

Love me some Summer Wars. Probably watched that movie more than a dozen times, largely because I have it downloaded on my phone. The ending was satisfying for me.

Oh wow I knew I missed a show and it was a big one when I did my top 3 there. I'd actually put Ancient Magus's Bride as #1 and then just shuffle the others down.

Holy shit, this last episode of Fate Apocrypha was absolutely nuts. This is definitely turning into a worthy series despite that one episode with Naruto Shitpooden levels of animation fail.

It remains an ok show. Very standard slice-of-life...5/10
I heard the ending was a little lame. I may just pass on it.

I did finish "Our love has always been 10 centimeters away" It was okay. Only 6 episodes so it's not too much of a commitment and it had some closure. Still, nothing amazing and kinda humdrum.

It was a little lame, but not horrible. Land of the Lustrous apparently ended, I didn't realize this because it was fucking ridiculously open-ended and not an ending. If there's never a second season, then I would poop on this show...

Always love watching Gigguk's content.

I still need to finish Ancient Magus Bride & Black Clover. But since they're both coming back next season I don't feel rushed.

"A Sister's All You Need" was pretty good. The MC is a little odd and I don't understand his obsession. Does, he want a little sister, obsessed with all little sisters even in real life, or just the idea of a little sister character? This will be something to tide me over before the winter season starts.

I just ordered my Fathom Event tickets online to go see Mary and the Witch's Flower at my local theater, exactly two weeks from today. Unfortunately, a couple friends are going along with me who don't do well with reading subtitles, so I had to order tickets for the English dub showing. If I was going by myself I would have gone to the subtitled original language showing. But, at least the dub is an actual British English dub, to properly fit the setting...

I don't think I've ever heard of that show...

How was the Ballroom anime? Can anyone give me a nice spoiler free review? I was thinking about picking that up since we're in the week of virtually nothing new.

Also any solid recommendations of new shows for the winter season?

I personally enjoyed, but I'm a bit biased towards it.

I would say Grancrest Senki is an anime you should keep an eye out for Winter 2018.

From an unbiased source, Ballroom is fantastic.

Amazon killed Anime Strike. Lmao. They folded it into Amazon Prime, which they should've done in the beginning imo. You're already paying 100 a year for Amazon and they want you to be pay 60 to watch anime. Screw the double paywall. Not sure if Amazon will license more anime though

If you can get over the long necks and some lack of dance sequences, it can turn out to be a great show.

Also, Chinatsu is the true female protagonist, not Shizuku. The anime caught up and passed the manga, which is not surprising due to the author's health.

You must have been asleep all of the last year or two, lol... It's the first movie from Studio Ponoc, basically the replacement for Studio Ghibli now that they're about done and gone. It's all mostly ex-Ghibli employees. Founded by producer Yoshiaki Nishimura and director Hiromasa Yonebayashi, who did When Marnie was there and Arrietty. The new movie is an anime adaptation of "The Little Broomstick" by Mary Stewart.

Movie Tickets for US Theaters on January 18th only; 7:00 pm English Dubbed, 8:00 pm English subtitled:

There are now both Japanese standard BD and a Limited Edition UHD/BD combo release for Mary and the Witch's Flower available for pre-order, and they do include English subtitles. I pre-ordered the UHD/BD combo set last week from Amazon Japan, It releases on March 20th. The box is designed to look just like the book Mary is holding in the movie trailer:

No, anime is just not my only hobby, so I don't keep up with it much. I'm also not an avid Ghibli fan, not because I've watched all the movies and disliked them, but because I've barely seen one and just don't care enough to see the rest. I picked up Nausicca of the Wind or whatever it's called only because Patrick Stewart lent his voice to it and it seemed cool to have him voice act in an anime.

I've been asleep too. I haven't heard of it but I like Ghibli stuff and this looks charming. It really does look like Ghibli even down to the company logo.

Just grabbed a 32" curved Samsung QLED monitor for my home PC from Amazon since they had it at a stupidly low price. Mysterious "Prime Exclusive" that you couldn't actually find listed anywhere on the site. I might actually start watching a few of the higher quality anime shows to see if there's a big difference. It's pretty much what I've been waiting for in terms of monitor tech. I remember the quality boost when I went from CRT to LCD back in 2007 and my anime quality jumped dramatically.

Late starting for this season, but hopefully there is some good stuff. I need to finish the original Overlord and Dagashi Kashi S2 will be my silly snack explanation anime. I'll give some impressions as I watch them.

Thoughts:

Killing Bites: Fairly enjoyable first episode. Love it when they go in-depth about the animal. Totally comes out of nowhere and it makes me laugh.

Violet Everdeen: Goddam. Dat animation.

Beatless: RIP Ms. Marie. I have no idea what is going on in the first episode. It's like Chobits but with Killer Robots

Watched The Girl Who Leapt Through Time. Meh.  It's not a bad movie, but it's not something I would watch again or related to.

Also started watching Black Clover.  Now this was really bad. Felt like I was watching a mash-up of Naruto, One Piece, and Blue Exorcist (and apparently borrows from other shonen series). They say "Wizard King" ad nauseum and the main character is constantly hitting on a nun.

I want to continue watching Toonami, but it seems like their lineup isn't all that great for new content.

Haven't seen killing bites because the description turned me off. Sounded like a show for furries. Agree w/ you on Violet and Beatless. It is totally Chobits but with killer robots lol

Yeah that's pretty much how I feel about both of those. I am still watching Black Clover because it's entertaining enough. Oh and for GirlswithGuns, I decided to get a ticket for Mary and the Witch's Flower next week. The trailer looked great, so let's see if it holds up.

i would like Black Clover a whole lot more if the voice direction in the anime didnt require having Asta be screamin whenever he talks.

The Girl Who Leapt Through Time was actually my first exposure to a non-Ghibli anime; my two daughters showed it to me shortly after showing me my first two Studio Ghibli Films, Spirited Away and Castle In the Sky, back in 2010. It was basically my gateway into anime collecting as well, being the first anime I ever bought, and on Blu-ray, in 2011. Since then I've probably seen it a dozen times, and I still like to show it to any friends who I am trying to get into anime. I own five different copies of it - the Limited Edition DVD Box, The original Bandai Blu-ray from 2011, The Hosada Collection Blu-ray, and both the Korean Fullslip and Lenticular Limited Edition Blu-ray sets. My only complaint about the movie is they overdid that first time jump sequence, it was way too long so I always fast forward through it. But other than that, I love the movie.

I just saw Million Yen Women on Netflix. It was pretty amazing and I highly recommend it...it's not anime, but it's kind of up our alley :)

One of the shows I was the most excited for this season was Overlord II. Unfortunately the first two episodes were pretty boring. I'll stick with it but I have to admit, I'm a little disappointed. I got my fill of lizard-man lore from Restaurant from another World.

LOL...at least they weren't talking about how amazing food was and how they had a tournament to decide what idiot lizardfart was going to get food for everyone. Ridiculous show that one. Glad I dropped it. I agree though, first couple episodes are disappointing. I can't believe our 12 episode season is going to be this in-depth war with lizard people. Irritated. Then we have to wait like, 3 more years for another 12 episodes? Feels like torture.

Pretty much a straight up continuation of Season 1. No recap. Just straight to the point. And is a continuation of Ain's goal to form a new country.

The Lizardman Arc is a significant character arc for Cocytus.

Should pretty much just look into the Light Novels if you are unsatisfied. I'm personally not mad. In fact, I'm enjoying it. Just following the continuity of the LNs. Looking forward to Sebas's Arc.

Lizardman Arc should end by Ep 4 or 5, depending on how fast the Traveler Lizard fights the Chief. If the tribes are united by Ep 3 and there is some fighting, it should end by 4. If there is no fighting at all, Ep. 5 is the safest bet.

If we are going by the OP of S2, things are going to go

Lizardman Arc: 1 - 4

Sebas Arc 5 - 8

Darkness and others Arc 9 - 12

complete speculation though. Looks like they are skipping the Workers Arc. If they do a Season 3, I do look forward to it since a ton of stuff does go down in the Novels.

At least it ain't like the freaking UQ Holder anime. Cramming 132 chapters into 12 episodes and they cut a ton of characters. (Should've been 24 Episodes at least imo. )

UQ Holder was really odd. I was like....this wrapped up really quickly and sped through what felt like real story. I feel like it would normally have been more drawn out and many more episodes.

Glad to know we aren't going to have 12 episodes dedicated to lizardmen. It's not that I'm wholly disappointed, I enjoy it, but I felt like more got accomplished in terms of world-building and story in the first season, but you're right, judging it too early.

Oh forgot to say, got my new PC monitor and I think in some cases it's a definite improvement, in others I'm like "I can see pixels now..." haha. Going to have to change my default on crunchyroll to 1080p now.

most of the initial world building occurred in Season 1. Season 2 is more likely going to be about Character Building with some World Building.

Caught up with March Lion. The last few episodes have been excellent. We finally see Hina's bully problem getting dealt with. Her new teacher is bad ass. Finally I was like "Yes, someone with a heart takes charge." And fuck bullies but more importantly fuck asshole parents who enable their kids shitty behavior.

This is an good lesson for any parents watching. Never write up a bully as just a kid being a kid. As a parent I dread the possibility of my daughter ever getting bullied. And you better believe if I ever find out she's being a bully I will shut that shit down right away. But I don't think I need to worry about that.

Also the ED theme for March Lion is my favorite song this season so far.

Yeah that show has really picked up, it's been a lot more fun to watch. I saw Mary and the Witch's Flower tonight. It was ok. First half was fun and I liked it, but then the second half felt rushed. The villains weren't "real" villains. Honestly, the Disney movies I watched growing up were better. Not sure if this is how all Ghibli movies are, but a total kids show without the oomph of the good kid movies. I'm sure GwG will love it since he loves Ghibli, but I wouldn't see this again or buy it.

I mean Mary and the Witch's Flower isn't a Ghibli movie, it's a knock off Ghibli movie done by a number of the former staff :p I haven't seen it yet, but basically anyone I know who has seen it has said it has the look of a Ghibli movie but not the heart.

in general though the villain of a ghibli movie is some form of humanity and technology lol.

but if you haven't seen others you should check some out such as spirited away and howl's moving castle.

No, like you, I thought it was just ok. As I had feared, it's definitely just a kid's movie, and it felt like I was watching a Disney movie rather than a Ghibli movie. The action scenes at the witch's school were just way too trippy and villains too cartoony for me. If I had to compare it to a Ghibli movie, it would be most like Ponyo entertainment-wise, but I rank Ponyo dead last at #23 out of 23 on my Studio Ghibli Favorites list. So yeah, I was hoping for something at least at an Arrietty level from Yonebayashi that adults could still enjoy, but that just didn't happen.

The next-door neighbor couple went along with me to see the movie, so next time they come over to watch anime, I'm going to show them Princess Mononoke, so they can compare a good Ghibli fantasy for adults to what they saw last night.

Out of curiosity, what would be your top 5 Ghibli movies and why (short version)? I may try to watch one.
