Anime & Manga Thread Vol. 2: Za Warudo!!!
Also, this is sweet: Netflix is getting more anime for its instant streaming service. Here's a list from 1UP:

009-1, Afro Samurai, Aquarion, Basilisk, Black Blood Brothers, Blassreiter, Burst Angel, Claymore, D. Gray-Man, Darker Than Black, Desert Punk, Devil May Cry, Fruits Basket, Fullmetal Alchemist, Gunslinger Girl, Hell Girl, Jyu-Oh-Sei, Last Exile, Le Chevalier D'Eon, Mushi-Shi, Origin: Spirits of the Past, Ouran High School Host Club, Samurai 7, Shigurui: Death Frenzy, Soul Eater, Speed Grapher, Trinity Blood, Vandread, Vexille, Witchblade, Xenosaga and XXXholic.

That doesn't include recent additions like Ghost Hound, Clannad, Golgo 13, Blue Drop, Now and Then, Here and There, and Gurren Lagann.

I just noticed this while seeing what was new on Netflix and thought that it was about time I get back into anime again.

Anything I absolutely need to watch? Anything I should avoid like the plague?
Of the ones in that list I have seen...
Strongly recommend: Fullmetal Alchemist, Soul Eater, Ouran
If you have time, check out: Devil May Cry (no real story, but cool action scenes), Afro Samurai (again, cool action scenes), D.Gray-Man (I watched like 15 episodes, it's a good series)
Avoid: Trinity Blood, Gunslinger Girl, Desert Punk (I found some moments hilarious, but it is very crude humor. Try the first episode if you are interested)
In my backlog: Fruits Basket, Mushi-Shi, Samurai 7, Clannad, Now and Then, Hell Girl, Golgo 13, Ghost Hound, xxxHolic, maybe Claymore

oh nice.. I really wanted to see the xenosaga ones.

Some of what Netflix is adding was already there at one point; desert punk specifically. More anime = awesome to me.

Claymore is fantastic in both anime and manga form. I cannot express how much I dislike Mushishi. I have seen a lot of anime, and that show bored me to tears.

---

Bakuman debuted, as an anime, a few days ago. It's by Ohba and Obata of Death Note fame. It centers around two high school guys whom wish to become mangaka--and the prize of marriage to some girl if/when they do.

It certainly won't have the twists and turns, and intensity, of Death Note--but the flow is good, and the stories seem like they will be fun.

Star Driver is one of BONES' latest projects. I really enjoy the art style and atmosphere. But, there are certain things that temper my enjoyment, like the terms "Cybody", "Cybuddy", and "Galactic Pretty Boy."

Then again, I don't like change, and want every BONES project to be as excellent as Eureka Seven.

I agree whole-heartedly with Claymore being dope.

Euerka 7? Notsomuch.

Soul Eater is just ok as well...the ending was quite frustrating. I'd say Claymore and D. Gray-man are both better.

So far I've checked out three shows from this year's Fall season:

Panty and Stocking: I was not expecting Panty and Stocking to be a crude comedy; it's filled with innuendo, double entendres, and sick humor. I really like the art and animation styles, but the show itself was quite surprising and off-putting. Right now I'm not sure what I think of it.

Samurai Girls: Samurai Girls is this season's Omamori Himari. The art style is reminiscent of Street Fighter 4, but the show itself is absolutely awful. It's incredibly boring, cliche, and pandering. I never want to see another episode of this garbage.

Otome Yokai Zakuro:
I had low expectations for this show, since it's yet another show with cat girls. However, I was pleasantly surprised that it might actually turn out quite well. The premise is that three soldiers are sent to the "Ministry of Spirits" to team up with three spirits to promote interracial understanding. Thankfully, the soldiers and the three spirit girls' interactions are believable; it's not some stupid harem where the girls are lusting for the men. Zakuro, the main spirit girl character, is bashful towards her partner, Kei, but she mostly gives him a hard time, and Kei, the main soldier character, tries his best to act like a handsome gentleman, however it's only a mask, since he's actually deathly afraid of spirits; I really enjoyed watching them both interact. Hopefully the show continues to be good.

I don't know what you've already seen, but the shows you need to absolutely watch on Netflix that I've seen from that list are Mushi-shi, Fullmetal Alchemist, and Now and Then, Here and There.

Eureka Seven is bomb. :D I hadn't heard of Star Diver; I will have to check it out sometime, thanks.

I haven't watched any anime in over a year now, with the exception of Kurau, which I never finished. -_-" (I know, I know, Razzuel :( )

I'm new to manga and am looking for recommendations.

I tried reading Bleach, but it reminded me too much of Yu Yu Hakusho (or whatever), and couldn't get into it.

My favorite animes are Fist of the North Star, Ninja Scroll, Vampire Hunter D, Cowboy Bebop and Golgo 13.

Monster. 20th Century Boys. Evangelion. Nausicaa.

I'm thoroughly enjoying 08th MS team right now, but does anyone have any anime recommendations suitable for a 12 year old? I want to get a series as a gift for my youngest brother (he's never watched or gotten into an actual series).

He can handle anything (that's the age I watched stuff like Bebop), but I'm not sure if my parents would get upset with content (sexual or suggestive, pretty much) such as the stuff shown in Bebop or Champloo (my first picks).

Basically, I'm looking for a good anime that is badass enough to hold the attention of a kid. And with decent English dubs of course ;). Maybe Trigun? I don't know.

Heh, if you're looking for a good dub, that rules out Trigun.

Try Fullmetal Alchemist, Escaflowne, or InuYasha.

Yeah, I tried watching 10 minutes of it and was completely bored. Why this ever made it on air, I'll never know.

The one I've been completely surprised by is Ore no Imouto ga Konnani Kawaii Wake ga Nai(My Little Sister Can't Be This Cute). Really wasn't expecting much from it, but does have potential to turn out to be a decent show. A show about a sister doing modeling while being addicted to bishōjo games seems weird, but it does have it's moments.

Finally got around to watching the Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya Season 2 set. I really wish I didn't read the manga before this. Because, expect for a few differences, it's basically an adaptation of the manga panel-for-panel. I also now see why so many people were complaining about the Endless Eight episodes. I was really disappointed with this season. But hopefully the Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya movie Bandai is supposedly going to be releasing sometime soon will make up for it.

I'd go with DBZ, was the first anime I got into as a kid around that sort of age as many others did.Yu Yu Hakusho is pretty good too its in that same sort of shonen genre. You can get both pretty cheap. The orange dbz boxsets can be found for like 20$ per a season. It's kinda sad how cheap Yu Yu Hakusho boxsets are being sold for these days,on wal-mart's website you can buy like each of them for 10$.

I haven't seen Trigun in about 7 years but I remember the dub being alright even with the black power ranger as Vash. It's crazy how many main character roles he can get.Since DBZ and Yu Yu are getting pretty old now, might want to consider Naruto or Bleach although boxsets can be a bit more costy around 30ish$.

As far as the dubs go for Naruto and Bleach.I've only seen one episode of the naruto dub which seemed terrible and about two of the Bleach dub and they seemed "ok" enough but still beat out by the Japanese voice cast.

Finale caught up with the latest Bleach Manga. Are they ending the series or is it going to keep going like One Piece?

It does look like it could be ending but with another issue coming out in 2 weeks it looks like it'll still be going on with a new arc.

I'd assume Ichigo will be using just hollow powers for this upcoming arc until somehow he gets shinigami powers again thanks to some plot device.Maybe it'll have to do with the 1st captain guy wanting to hunt down Ichigo now knowing about his hollow powers from the last arc with the Vizards as his allies.

Despite Naruto looking more "kiddy" then bleach, characters in there seem to actually die as where in Bleach they may look dead for just a bit but turn out fine and dandy by the time the arc's over all thanks to the power of band-aids.

I was thinking they may go with a different arc, but if they do it may not be Ichigo. Didnt Rukia explain that the reason why Ichigo looks younger is because he was reverted back to the moment he first received the shinigami powers. So if that is the case he wouldn't have a strong enough spirit power to even call upon hollowfication since he would have to be in shinigami mode to use it. As for the 2 week they may just do a Bleach "Special" that can take place years later showing what everyone is up too, something that Love Hina did.

I think it'll continue still, could be wrong on it though .I think if it does continue he'll get back his spirital power due to some plot device like his powers were "hibernating" or saying something about how hollow powers work differently then shinigami powers.Certainly does look like it could be ending though.A little disappointing ending for me though since Ichigo seemed to easily take out Aizen.

BERSERK

I finished watching Toradora and now I'm super depressed. I don't know why I watch these high school romances.

Although, I'm glad I picked it up. I'm happy I was able to support NISA with one of their first anime releases and the packaging is amazing.

Bleach
I was thinking the same thing too but then was Aizen that powerful to begin with? Ichigo faced off against how many captains and beat them. The only reason Aizen had the upper hand, against everyone was his Zanpakutō that had control over all senses, which was Ichigo's only advantage.

There still are a lot of questions left unaswered like how did Ichigo and Uryū father become "friends"? What is Aizen history? How did he get it in his head to be the who he was?

I think they will end it for now but like a lot of these newer anime will restart the series with a new hero or they will just reboot the series with the same characters but with alternative stories.

Haven't posted here in awhile, my anime-watching has been really slacking off lately. Once FMA: Brotherhood Part 3 is released, I'm probably going to start watching that, looking forward to that.

Just got Xam'd Part 1 in the mail, and it's indeed 1080p. I'll probably start in the next few weeks, I've been waiting on this one for awhile.

As for the Fall lineup, it looks like a lot of garbage  :)roll:). Bakuman & Star Driver definitely looks interesting, but it looks like a lot of cat girls/harem/anime stereotypes based on what Crunchyroll picked up (which incidentally is neither of those). Very interesting to read what people think of the new shows, especially the ones Crunchyroll picked up, so post impressions if you have any, it'll help everyone (read: me) decide what's worth watching and what isn't.

And lastly, if there's one anime remake I can get behind, it's Berserk. fuck. Yes.

I already talked about Panty and Stocking, Samurai Girls, and Otome Yokai Zakuro, so you can go back a page or two and read about those.

As for some of the other Fall shows that I've recently seen, here's what I thought:

The World God Only Knows: I had no idea what this was about before I started watching the first episode, so it was kind of surprising to learn that it's about a high school student who's the king of conquering girls in visual novels, and one day he accepts a contract that forces him to conquer real girls. He uses visual novel logic to win over the real girls, which provides for some pretty funny moments. Also, the show looks spectacular; not only is it vibrant, but it's beautifully animated. I'm interested in seeing how this show progresses.

Fortune Arterial: Fortune Arterial sounded liked typical, harem-based trash after I read its synopsis, however, the show seems to be alright. The characters are tolerable so far, and there seems to be a horror element woven into the story some how. Also, Fortune Arterial didn't have anything obnoxious or pandering in its first episode, so I think there's a chance it won't degrade into garbage, as long as the story is solid.

Oreimo: Oreimo seems to have the potential to be really good. It's about some guy, Kyou, and his sister, Kirino, who's secretly an otaku that's heavily invested in anime and visual novels. Kyou was the best part about the show; he's pretty funny, and he reminds me of Tomoya from Clannad. There were plenty of other jokes, like those between him and his sister, once he discovers her secret, but I didn't get a big laugh out of those. I'll continue watching it as long as ANN still streams it.

Squid Girl: Squid Girl is one of my favorite shows of the Fall. It's squiddly awesome; and one of the reasons I like it so damn squiddly much is because of its writing — it incorporates "squid" everywhere in the show, such as using squid as a verb, and the comedic situations are just brilliant. However, Squid Girl's writing is not the only reason it's an awesome gag comedy; the characters, animation, and pretty much everything else are top-notch, and the show hits all the right spots.

It looks good.I wouldn't say great or anything but "good" since it holds my attention and can be fun to watch :p.I've only seen maybe 6 episodes though and likely out of order but I like what I've seen. The only sort of problem I have, if you would call it a problem is that they never seem to leave the school grounds since they're always defending it so it in a way feels a bit repetitive killing monster of the week.Whats the deal with those dog ghost spirits though. Are they meant to be gay lol because the dub version sure makes them seem that way.

Edit:Edited to add a quote be more clear cut about what show I'm talking about

I suggest you look into Ghost Hunt, When They Cry, Shiki, Boogiepop Phantom, Ghost Hound, and Hell Girl. Ghost Hunt is my favorite out of all of those, and it's one of my favorite shows, period. When They Cry is fantastic and especially disturbing, Shiki is an awesome show about vampires that's currently airing (you can watch it on Funimation's website), and Boogiepop Phantom is something that's positively weird. I haven't seen much of Ghost Hound and Hell Girl yet, but I hear great things about them.

Also, you could probably consider Perfect Blue and Magnetic Rose as horror, and both of those are amazing.

I've read all but the most recent chapters of TWGOK, and it is awesome. It's one of those manga where you read a chapter and then immediately need to read the next few chapters. The comedy based on the main character's obsession with visual novels is hilarious and should appeal to a lot of otaku. He's not just kinda obsessed, he bases his view of reality on the idealized world of games, and this conflicts constantly with the real world. I think TWGOK is a fresh take on the high school romantic comedy genre.

I've been slacking on watching my anime collection recently, and been mainly watching stuff on Anime Network on Demand. I need to get back into the swing of things once I'm done with FF13.
Also, you could probably consider Perfect Blue and Magnetic Rose as horror, and both of those are amazing.
Magnetic Rose was pretty good.Feels a little weird labeling certain anime as horror for me but I think if you had to give it a label it could fit into "horror".Stink Bomb also in Memories with Magnetic Rose was also pretty fun to watch and had a real nice rhythm to it although non horror related.

As amazing as the packaging is, I hope they quit doing it- those long boxes really don't fit right on my DVD shelves, and I'd really hate to start passing on future releases becuase I don't have anywhere to put the box. (I've got 1 disc left of Toradora to go still.)

Or! They release so much that you're able to buy new shelves just for NISA releases.
Although, I don't think I know anything about the newer series they're releasing so I don't really have any plans on picking them up.

Caught up on Yankee-kun to Megane-chan (109 chapters, ongoing). For those who haven't heard of it, it's a high school life series where most of the characters are delinquents (yankee) trying to find their place in normal school life. Tons of humor, a few ass-kickings (although the main focus of this series is not about fighting... this is not Kenichi or some other classic shounen action series), and clever story and character development. Not as good as The World God Only Knows, but still an enjoyable read.

Also picked up the first two seasons of Inuyasha... I know, why? I saw that they were replaying the series on Adult Swim and felt like checking it out again. I found the cheap English dub only versions ($25 total for first two seasons) so I figured what the hell, I'll put them on when there is nothing else on tv. These sets don't even have English sub, so hearing impaired have to pay 3x for the better version with Jap/Eng dub and Eng sub.

Two episodes left in El Cazador de la Bruja, looking forward to the ending.

Rewatching Gundam Wing for the first time in around 10 years.Jee I really don't remember it being this bad growing up with all the stuff that well just looks gay like the five heroes all posing in the intro that its no wonder you hear about all these yaoi like stuff for this series.Relena has to be the stupidest character ever made. After watching some of the original Gundam I thought it would be somewhat comparable on how good it was and despite the Wing having around 25 years on the original this seems more out of date but hopefully it will get better as it goes along.

Is Claymore any good? Not really into anime, but not opposed either, just looking for a good show and it's on netflix instant.

Finished El Cazador de la Bruja and enjoyed it. Good story (nothing terribly original, but still good), fun character interaction, good English dub, and the music fit well with the setting. Had a bit of a Trigun feeling to it... Trigun mixed wih another anime I can't place. I'm glad they wrapped things up in the second to last episode and then devoted the entire final episode to what happens to the characters in the future; most series just wrap up the main conflict and then end abruptly. Will probably start My Bride is a Mermaid next.

Started reading Kimi no Iru Machi (from the Suzuka dev). So far so good.

it's pretty great. go enjoy.

I feel like I just completed a major milestone; I finally finished watching Katekyo Hitman Reborn. I really loved the show. I can't really talk specifics, since it's 203 episodes long — I wouldn't want to spoil any of it.

It's certainly not flawless. There are too many recap episodes (although, in relation to the total size of the show, it's negligible); too many episodes have recaps of the previous episode(s); and some parts of the story are stretched thinner than I would have liked.

However, the good parts of the show completely outweigh its flaws. The show has a wide cast of characters, and I enjoyed them all. I want to pick favorites like Mukuro, Hibari, Flan, Squalo, or...I'd probably just end up naming all the characters, haha. Anyway, some of the best qualities of Reborn are its endearment and its moments of sheer craziness; there are a lot of moments with feelings of accomplishment, perseverance, and the power of friendship that bring a smile to my face (and the music totally helps in that regard); and there are moments when the show is so awesome and crazy that I can't help but be surprised and smile — some of the fights and situations are just spectacular. Also, I love how there were no loose ends, and that every little part of the show had a purpose; everything just fit together nicely, such as the ending being completely satisfying. I noticed that the manga is still ongoing, so I'd like to see more, but this was the perfect place to stop, and I think it's good that they're taking a break.

Now there's this huge hole where Reborn used to be. It's kind of surreal that it's over now. I'll try and fill that void by playing the Reborn games, such as Reborn Battle Arena 2 for PSP which I just bought, or by buying Reborn merchandise like calendars and soundtracks, but it'll never be the same as it once was — this was truly a unique experience.

Is there anyone that's seen the anime and read the manga? I'm interested in knowing if the manga is worth reading even after watching the show, though I'm not happy to see that volume 17 of the manga is seemingly in limbo now.

You know, liking something flawed is not a bad thing, in fact sometimes what you like about the show is often the flaws in the show (not commenting on your review, just throwing a random thought out there)
