"October 19, 2007 - Quoting an unnamed Singaporean Toshiba official and the marketing director of an Australian retailer, an Aussie electronics web site lit the gaming internets afire with Xbox speculation today.

The site, SmartHouse, reported that a new Xbox model (they don't call it an Xbox 360) with a built-in HD-DVD drive and other goodies will debut either in late 2008 or at the 2009 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

According to the SmartHouse report, the new Xbox will include the following features:

The article also claims Toshiba and Microsoft have explored the idea of including a dual HD TV tuner, electronic program guide capability and a newly-standardized mp3 player docking port.

If the article is accurate, the two companies have also kicked around the idea of creating an "open standard chassis system that allows an Xbox to be slotted into a HD TV screen over 40-inch. The open standard bays will allow hard drives to be upgraded and expanded similar to the way that users can upgrade the hard drive on a PC."

The article also mentions the possibility that Toshiba itself may market a version of the purported unit under its own brand name."

? If this is true I wonder how much its going to cost.

IF its true, its a bad idea. 2009? That will be when we will all be knee deep in NEXTBOX and PS4 talk again.

Seriously, Halo 3 JUST came out. This should be the DAWN of the 360's reign, not the start of the "golden years".

No more talk about "next gen" systems until THIS GEN stops being reffered to as "next gen".

That's what the original XBox owners said. :)

It's funny... laugh.

Well, 2009 isn't quite PS4-rumor-land, but it's only one or two years earlier than that. I doubt that these rumors are true. If they are, is M$ stupid?

Nah. PS4 and Wii2 aren't till like 2010 (the talk starts in 2010). Comes out in 2011 or 2012.

I remember having my Xbox for years and thoroughly enjoying it... maybe the time has just flown faster these days.

well if its shown at 2008... 2009 should be the XBox 3, no?
Maybe the third box will have the hd-dvd player built into it.

Should be sweet.

Shit, for that additional functionality (HD DVD, HD Tuner, and HD DVR) I'd buy another 360 in a heartbeat. However I might just buy a PS3 if they can get that stuff working (PS3's DVR coming out only in Europe is BS).

You know, by that time they might not have to raise the price for this additional functionality...

They'll never build in a HD DVD player. HD DVD Is losing the HD War, It'd be suicide.

Why must sony and microsoft keep making more sku's,i wish both companies would have one frinkging unit.

I'm thinking this is the next xbox as well.
Please tell me that this will be 100% backwards with the 360 and the drive is fast enough to play 360 games.
