I don't think I can afford to drop $100 on a new game card each time a new game comes out. Can I play any games within the last couple of years that will run on my card?
Any recent games I can play with an FX 5200?

I highly doubt it...I tried quake 4 and unreal tournament 2004 at 1024x768 (or whatever that resolution is) with low everything on a fx5500 and i couldnt even get it to run smoothly playing on LAN. CS is probably the only decent game you can play at a comfortable frame rate. Even the 160 dollar x850xt (top of the line ATI card just this time last year) is performing horribly in Need for Speed Most Wanted multiplayer with mostly everything at low (although it runs somewhat comfortably in single player with everything but AA maxed out)

I have an FX5200XT, and I can run Unreal Tournament 2k4 no problem. Of course I only run it at 800x600. But it runs perfectly fine for me. I have Doom3 but it runs like total ass even with it set to low and an embarrasing 640x480

I'd say you can run most games at least halfway well at 640x480 or 800x600 (which is still better resolution than console games other than 360).

I'm not sure how comparable Intel Integrated 950 chipset is to FX5200. But I can run Dungeon Siege II alright at 1024x768 in medium details on the 950. Of course, because the game runs on the older DS engine.
UT2k4 also relies on cpu performance. Turning down the physics and world details help.
I run UT2k4 fine at 1024x768 on Geforce 4 Ti 4400 and Sempron 2500+ and the UT2k4 settings on normal for everything.
One other thing is that the newer Nvidia drivers tend to suck on older cards. I got the best fps benchmark with 44.03. The 45 and 50 versions made the game crawl.

How does the FX 5200 compare to a Radeon 9800 Pro? Before my 9800 fried, I could run UT2K4, Doom 3, HL2, and just about everything else at medium or higher. It's a little past it's prime, but I highly recommend it if you can find one cheap.

You should be able to play Doom 3 or possibly stuff on the Doom 3 engine. I got Doom 3 to run smooth, although crappy looking, on a g4 ti4600

I can run UT2k4 and Doom 3 just fine on Medium settings with my 9600 Pro... however that compares to Nvidia's stuff.

The 5200 was created as an entry level DX9 card at a time when Vista was expected to ship much earlier. It was never intended for the gaming market and was always targeting those who needed the cheapest possible way to have a real DX9 GPU. Thus, even with the DX9 features, high end model from the previous generation can run rings around it for gaming.
You shouldn't be limited to the 5200, though. More powerful GPUs are moving into the bargain sector now. Fry's/Outpost has recently had 5500 cards for $30 AR and today's newspaper ad shows a 128MB ATI 9550 based board for $30 AR. This GPU has roughly double the 5200's performance. For around $60 you can do better still. Just keep an eye open for the deals.
