you know you won't have the time to beat it?

i REALLY want to get this RPG but i seem to remember that old thread about not finishing RPGs and it's so true.

besides i have my xbox 360 and half-life 2 on my computer competing for my attention.

Anyone else just KNOW they won't beat it and at least don't want to pay full price?

Yea, I was like that at first but now I'm glad I picked it up. It started off slow for me and I really didn't like it until I got to the Abby about 5 hours into the game. I have about 25 hours on it now and at level 25 and the story is great so far. I just hope whenever I get a 360 I won't forget about this game and will see the end of it before New Years.
YOu can get Dragon Quest 8 for $30 If your local CC take $10 off BB coupon.
whoa, i'm really out of the loop. not a bad price

I picked it up, at full price too. I was really disappointed when I took the round seal off the top and it took some black stuff off of the box, leaving white underneath. Did they not foresee people taking them off? I wound up just throwing away the box because after just a few days it had started to degrade, and most of my games look immaculate when stored the same way. It should not be this hard to keep a game in mint condition.

I picked it up when it first came out, and now I really have to confine myself to only playing on weekends. During the week I found myself playing till way to late at night, like till 2am... then when I have to get up at 6am for work I was a mess all day. So now I limit to weekends. But since Ive been playing the games I have to get too have been piling up, lol...

I keep thinking the same thing, I know with the glory of the 360 staring me in the face it would be hard to go find the 100 hours to play through it.

I have 45 hours put into it right now. Sleep is a resource I no longer have. I am continually late starting work; good thing I don't have to punch a timecard, and I have completely alienated my family. It's been worth it. One of the best RPG's I have played in a very long time.
Only took me 70 hours to finish.
Only?? Holy shit, that's still a long time (and ALOT of random battles).
Only?? Holy shit, that's still a long time (and ALOT of random battles).
Not really. I finished Xenogears in 90 hours the first play through and SO 2 I had around 120 hours after the Cave of Trials. Also, a lot of those hours were spent exploring and doing alchemy.

DQ7 has mad-length. I was worried about VIII, but I'm forcing myself to play. I'm at 17 hours @ lv. 12. (have a bit of "stand-by time" on there)

70 hours! Wow. I finished it last night and was at 84 hours. I haven't enjoyed an RPG this much since Skies of Arcadia back on Dreamcast. Well worth it, even if you don't have a ton of time to play. If you take a long break from the game, you simply press the start button to talk with your group and they'll remind you where you left off - so don't be afraid that you have to sit and play every single day until you finish (although that's what I did).

I consider Dragon Quest 8 to be the most essential game of this generation! Everyone who even thinks they know RPGs has to play the grandaddy of them all. Plus all the extra touches that were thrown in really immerse you into it. Such refinement! A true progression from how it was envissioned in DQI. Zelda could have learned so much!

Orchestrated music, over the top Britishness, sweeping beautiful landscapes (I always have loved Toriyama's environments), and lovable characters.

Best of all no convoluted battle systems, angsty protagonists, or mindless level grinding. You get enough strength from you journey and scouting expeditions from venturing to a new area. Best of all, you can really go anywhere in this game. Once you receive your boat, anyway.

It's like having a loving parent read you a fairy tale. You can either listen through the end or fall asleep in the middle and finish it later. It's all up to you since the party reminds you where you left off when you resume the journey.

Combined with the new Animal Crossing, my time has fallen into some sort of Black Hole to never return.

Currently at 50 hours and loving it absolutely.

Heh - I've been playing it every night too - except I start around 1 am and go to 5 or 6 am (don't have to be at work early - work at home with my own hours!). Still, it was taking too much of my time. I'm about 60 hours in, around level 35, and just got the item that lets you travel to new places (won't spoil the exact method of travel). The last few hours I have been trying to backtrack to previous areas for treasure chests, and just won the Rank B Monster arena (bah - crappy prize). Now I'm about to go out of town (in real life) for 2 weeks but I'm going to force myself to finish it as soon as I get back. I got to about the same point in Tales of Symphonia and never picked it back up again.

I'm curious as to how much more there is, but don't want to spoil it by looking too closely (at the guide or a FAQ). I think there might be a hefty chunk still left because I still haven't seen many of the ingredient items listed in an alchemy FAQ I printed, and I'm pretty thorough about hitting all the searchables and treasure chests in every area. Can anyone who finished it give a rough estimate of how much longer it took after gaining that special travelling ability (without spoiling me or anyone else not as far along)?

All I can say is thank the maker for the "Holy Protection" spell, the 2 faster methods of travel (the first comes much earlier, won't spoil that either but it is optional so make sure you look for it), and the "Heal All" option. Those make up somewhat for the repetitive random battles. Really, though, there have only been a few places where random battling is TOO drawn out. Overall it is a very well designed and balanced game.

edit - I'm not talking about the boat travel the previous poster mentioned - that is the 3rd method - the other two I'm talking about come after that. I believe the one I have now is the final one (can't imagine any other way to travel!).

Dragon Quest 8 is the best RPG I have played in years - Everyone even remotely interested in RPGs owes it to themselves to play it!

Once you get that last method of travel, there are several places on the map you can now get to that contain some pretty helpful items/treasures. If you go to all of those locations, plus set aside some time for the alchemy pot, you probably have about 10-15 hours to go.

Last RPG I enjoyed this much was also Skies of Arcadia followed by FF7 and this has definately joined them as my favorites. I'm at 47 hours and I thought I at the last boss area...I guess I was wrong.

that game deffinitely took days of my life

I really want this game. I think it'd jump to the top of my backlog immediately... however, I have a very hard time paying more than $20 for a game nowadays... guess I've become a hardcore CAG. :D

I just beat the game for the first time with 145 hours. Now I'm off to the bonus dungeons.

This is the type of game that you MAKE the time for - it's that good.

I'm afraid to get it because I have serverly disliked DQIII and DQVII, has DQVIII changed enough that its now awesome? Kinda like Resident Evil 4.

You're kidding, right? 145 hours? I know there can't possibly be enough to do to extend my game from 60 -> 145 :D. Did you spend hours in the casinos?

I have spent some time in the casinos, but not that much. I don't rush through my games like so many do these days. I talked to everybody and actually took the time to explore and enjoy the DQ8 world. I'm one of the few gamers who appreciates the fact that there is an option to walk around instead of running everywhere you go.

Well, I thought I was being pretty slow and complete (talking to everyone, searching everywhere, etc). I'll see in a few weeks (when I get back home) how many hours I end up with when I'm done. Maybe there is more left than I realize.

Now wait a minute - I went through and got the good ending, made 90% of the available items in the alchemy pot, found 101 mini medals and had a good enough monster team to win rank A - all in 84 hours. I have a few Trials yet to complete, but that's about it. What in God's name can you do for additional 60 hours before tackling the extra dungeon?

damn you guys are hardcore. i could never spend so much time on a game these days. i think i developed ADD. i wish i could go back to the old FF1 times.

I just beat it in 51 hrs, I pretty much just followed the story. I talked to pretty much everyone in the towns, but didn't explore or use the pot much. I'll probably go to that new dungeon soon.

Great Game

I didn't get Dark Cloud 2 for the same reason. On the original Dark Cloud - I travelled up to the 82nd level of that funky last dungeon before I quit. I also just finished the main story of Xenosaga 2 - I'm trying to quit the habit for a bit.

OK, right now I have about 25 hours into Shadow Hearts II. I've hearing nothing but good things about DQ VIII. I really like the old school type of RPG's. As mentioned earlier, I think you can get it at CC for 30 bucks. So, my question is should I finish SH II and how many hours does it usually take to finish? Or should I go and pick up DQ VIII and dive in and forgot about SH II for the time being? Thanks...

I'm at 80+ hours right now and am at the final dungeon. Usually anything after the 30 hour mark bores me, but this has the magic to keep me going. Casinos, alchemy recipes I strive to get the ingredients for, and now am at the point at which I can hunt metal slimes now. I now wish I had placed some points in the Hero's Spear skill.

Finish SHII, that one was a pretty fun romp. DQ8 will consume you once you start it.

i actually bought DQVII and then thought about this, and realized i didnt have the time nor did i WANT to devote 80 hours to a single game, sold it at cost on ebay

I waited to pick it up, but now I'm on winter break and I split the $30 cost with my boyfriend. He's playing it first and he's totally addicted to it, he said it's one of those rare games that you crave to play. Kinda like katamari when you first get it. I haven't had that feeling since Tales of Symphonia. DQVIII looks great though.

I think I might actually sit down to play this one. I have so many unfinished RPG's with whacky-ass action/timing/free-roaming battle systems that a traditional RPG feels fresh to me. This may be the first one I play and beat since Paper Mario for the gamecube.

Well, from what I've heard here, I can't wait to play this game. From what I've read a lot of fans of Skies of Arcadia are loving this game. That's the only RPG I truly loved trying to do more than just go through the story except for Final Fantasy Tactics Advance. I'll definately be picking this up when the price drop comes.

It's a great time to be a cheap ass gamer.

I am still going to get it. I have just put the purchase on hold for now because I won't have any free time next month for another lengthy RPG.

Going to go get this Monday morning at Best Buy. You guys convinced me to try it out. I'll use my Christmas money.

update: i ended up getting this for Xmas. I'll probably put my 360 on hold for a while while I try to get a grip on this game. i really really hope i don't have to put in 80+ hours...

If its a good game and you like it, it shouldnt be that big of a deal to have to spend a lot of time on it. You can just chip away at it on and off for an extended period of time anyway.

I cant play it for very long personally. The music makes the game seem like a leisurely stroll through the woods. And I dont want to stroll through the woods all day.

no time for another rpg now.. I have a backlog across all of my systems to be finished first..

Here's my to do list:

Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance
Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker (yeah.. still didn't finish)
Metroid Prime 2: Echoes

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney
Viewtiful Joe: Double Trouble
Advance Wars: Dual Strike
Mario 64 DS (oldest game, still unbeaten)

PC:

Thief 3: Deadly Shadows
Half-Life 2

I'll be busy until december of '06 :wall:

I wanted it, but now I don't because the main character is a mute.

Is he still as active in the story as the other characters or no?
I wanted it, but now I don't because the main character is a mute.

Sorry, but that's a pretty lame excuse not to get this game :D. He's active in that you control him. He does "talk" to the other characters, they just don't show it (or they zoom out, showing him filling in backstory to new people you meet, etc).

So, I picked back up again after not playing for about 3 weeks (out of town). It was in danger of getting forgotten like Tales of Symphonia, which I stopped playing right near the end. On DQ8, I was about 63 hours in and, I think, am very near the end. I couldn't let this one go unfinished, it is just too good. The last 3 days I've pumped up my hours to 72, mostly just spent power-levelling by hunting metal slimes. I wanted to get some of the character skills to 100 before I started the end part. Then I started what I thought was the very end - chasing Sir Leopold using the dark leaf. That led to many a cut scene (Purgatory Island) but now I'm back in the world again free to do what I want.

To those who have finished, is there a point, very soon, where I won't be able to do the monster arena or buy things any more? I'm *THIS* close to winning Rank A in the Arena - I was down to the last monster (that stupid Zombie Gladiator) on my last attempt. There are still a few items I haven't found, though I think I've been everywhere at least a few times. I also have about 8 mini-medals left to find. I'm assuming some of these things can be found in the last areas I haven't gone to yet. I guess I'll just press on and reload if it looks like I've gone too far (there's still a few weopons/armor I'd like to find or create before the final battles).

One warning for those not too far through - save your "Saint's Ashes" for the really big items. I used a couple on smaller things (e.g., Zombie Mail) and now wish I had them back. There just aren't too many to find - one can be had in the casino but I don't have the patience for that.

I said I wasn't sure I was getting it because I HATE cell shaded games. But I did get it and this game kicks major ass. The cell shaded graphics look awesome in this game compared to other ones I have tried. I LOVE THIS GAME. I am into hour #80 and am really close to the final boss. Great game and you will love it if you liked other DQ games.

Spoiler for Monster Arena........

Don't want to ruin it for others just in case but the Golem team kicks ass in the arena. They combine to form a big golem who has 999 hit points and his defense is pretty high also. He does some nice damage sometimes 800-900 with a critical hit. They also heal in between rounds which really helps.

Space to put Blitz's message off the top!
Don't want to ruin it for others just in case but the *** team kicks ass in the arena. ...deleted... They also heal in between rounds which really helps.
I was aware of the combos, but I had stuck with simply the 3 strongest monsters I found. They were all mixed. One is Talos (stone guardian) - that guy is TOUGH. I also have "Pa Troll" who has 999 HP by himself (but with low defense). I will have to go recapture the ones you mentioned above and give them a shot. I had let them go a long time before because, individually, they are pretty weak - at least the ones I found.

An interesting note - in putting together my second team I accidentally found a combo that can be made with different monster types. I have no idea what it does, but it is called "Triple Swords" (edit - verified, this is in a FAQ at Gamefaqs) and I made it by combining the 2 'killing machines' found in the snow area with Dumbking (who is a humanoid - Notso Macho) and can be found near Argonia. I might try them out to see what they can do. I thought you had to combine 3 of the same type of monster for a valid combo.

Just so you know, you can experiment putting the teams together and the name will change if you have a valid combo, - E.g, mine says "MY TEAM NAME, aka, The Blade Runners" (and their special power is "Triple Swords" plus they seem to get an extra turn in combat when called by the Hero).

what really sucks is i got this game around NOV 16..... played it a few days and last time i played it was around DEC 2... i said

I stay up all Xmas eve night playing it ........ BUT didnt

I stay up all New years eve playing it ......... BUT didnt

i havent popped that game back in my PS2 since DEC 2 and only played it around 14 hours.....sadly its a great game but Lack of time really kills it for me.. hell now i got FF 4 stuck in my GBA player on the gamecube what is sucking up all my time... and i have Radita stories coming from gamefly and ATL end of darkness next in line up...

Sadly it seems DQ8 will become one of those games that never gets touched again.

By "stand-by," do you mean you fell asleep for 8 hours while playing? I'm at lvl. 11 w/ under 5 hours.

I understand. When I first started playing Xenogears eons ago, the night I began it, I decided that I wanted to kill a 12 pack of Weidemann's while playing. I woke up around 11AM the next morning, upside-down on my bead, with the controller still in my hand.

This game is fucking fantastic, and thanks to CAG, I picked it up for $30 at GC. I would have gladly paid $50 for it, and the nostalgia is incredible. The sounds, the bridges symbolizing more difficult characters, the overly unnecessary dialogue boxes, the Toriyama feel, drakees, slimes, all that good shit. I must admit that I'm a Final Fantasy nut, and while I expected DQ8 to be good, the demo was icing on the cake (until I played it; Jesus, whomever thought using the FFXI battle engine in a single player game ought to run and play on the autobahn).

Is DW7 as good as this? Are they even comparable?
