Apple Game Center

Apple Game Center allows you to keep a friends list, track your in game achievements, and compare with your friends. Many games support this.

Make sure to checkout the official CAG Game Center Exchange Thread. You can post your game center name and see the names of your favorite CAG'rs.

General iOS FAQ

1. Make sure to check for periodic updates either in iTunes or on your iOS devices. For each release of new firmware, there's usually a bunch of games updated right afterward.

2. Some applications also go on sale by their authors when they reach 1 million download and similar milestones.

3. Apps often have specials the day before, during, and after holidays, regardless if said game/app is related to the holiday. Most notably is the fact that many developers discount their apps for Christmas and because Apple employees, in charge of App Store changes, take a break during the week of Christmas these discounts usually last until the new year.

4. Newly released apps will often have a % or dollar amount off for a limited period of time to gain a large following quicker. While browsing the app store you can go to a particular type or genre and order according to release date. This can make finding new app discounts faster.

5. Apps can be re-downloaded from your iOS device. To do this open the App Store and look for a tab called "Purchased". From here you can re-download any previously purchased apps.

6. I strongly advise not to buy iTunes Gift Cards by 3rd parties unless you know they can be trusted. Retail stores and receiving cards as gifts are the best ways. There are many credit card scams, stolen cards, hacked cards going around, especially on Ebay.

7. If you are the victim of a iTunes Card scam or get your account locked due to one not all hope is lost. Apple has been fairly lenient on these issues. Call Apple directly at 1-800-MY-APPLE or check the iTunes Store support page. Also going to your local Apple Store to discuss it can help. The account locking is an automated process and can be reversed. This can take time so be cautious if you use gift cards from 3rd party sources.

8. If you somehow break your iOS device, you have some options. If you bought the Applecare warranty it should be covered for most items. If your Applecare ran out or you don't have one, try using one of the repair guides on iFixit to repair it yourself. Apple Stores have been known to give discounts if you bring in a iOS device that they will not fix since it's not in warranty. This discount however is very small.

9. Using a screen protector can extend the life of your device. Most stores carry these, but they can be hard to install. The best I have personally used are made by a company called Power Support. They have both clear and anti-glare protectors. They are easier to install because the protector is a firm yet thin piece of plastic. Griffin Technologies and Zagg are also very good.

10. Universal Apps have a small plus sign in the upper left corner next to their price. They can be played natively on both the iPad and iPod/iPhone. iPhone games that are not universal can still be played on the iPad with a lower resolution. Non universal iPad games cannot be played on the iPhone.

Games by Genre as Recommended by Fellow CAGs

Feel free to add games, genres or move titles as needed. This list is to give CAGs a chance to catch up on high-quality games they may have missed and to get new users started on "can't miss" titles to download for their new iDevice.

Green titles are universal (ipad and iphone/ipod touch).
Italic are iPad only.
^ are retina optimized for the iPad.
* are iPhone 5/5th gen iPod Touch optimized.
Some game developers/companies like to offer free versions which are usually demos of the full version and a great way to check out and determine if you will actually like a particular game without paying anything. These demos are noted as such. Some game developers/companies like Zynga, however, like to offer free, AD-Supported, versions of their games which means you get the full game, but it features ads and by buying the paid version you remove those ads. AD-Supported games are noted as such.

I'm sure cag kinks are still being worked out. If you have additions, edits, etc feel free to pm my and I'll add them to the original first post.

I don't particularly like the idea of just dropping them in that thread. It's too easy for people to redeem them and not say their gone. I don't think a one line request to pm me once in awhile will clog the thread up too much. :)

I think it's hilarious someone is lecturing the dude who watches over this thread. It's like saying to a cop, "Ya know, you were going 3 miles over the speed limit."
Anyone else playing Scurvy Scallywags? Like Dungeon Raid with humor. My level 15 guy died and I didn't have enough to revive, but otherwise pretty fun.

Whoa. That's an awfully loose definition of "lecturing" isn't it now? I wasn't criticizing, merely suggesting, Mr.CouchAvenger. :p

There are many nooks and alleyways hidden around CAG that a lot of people don't realize exist, I was merely suggesting if he had a bunch of stuff to giveaway, there are some appreciative people over on that thread (even though its a "drop", I've seen plenty of people ask for PMs as well), but hey it's his prerogative.

[Sidenote: after all these years of Bobby Brown floating around in my head, I had no idea "prerogative" had an extra-R, "the more you know" I guess.]

The iPad-only Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition is on sale for $5.99, the first time it has been discounted from its $9.99 launch price.

How big is the download because I have 3.5 gb free, the app store says it's only 1.78 gb, and yet it's telling me I don't have enough free space to download...

Edit-I freed up another 1.5 gb for a total of 5 gb free space and it finally started downloading. If this ends up really taking up that much space it's definitely not a game that I'll be keeping on my ipad permanently.

I believe some stuff requires space to download, and then space to install, effectively requiring an initial free space of twice the app size (though after installing, it would only take up what it says it would). I've seen some apps that will say that in the app description, but not sure if it applies to all apps or just some apps.

Agricola is out as well as a new Fighting Fantasy gamebook from Tin Man. It seems like these days are the only days I'm happy to game on this awful platform

Agricola is listed as $9.99 on the apple website but is $6.99 on itunes. Do you think this is a promotional price?

According to Playdek via reports at BGG, $6.99 is what it SHOULD cost.

I will confess the possibility of it being an opening sale never crossed my mind and I have no idea if they intend to raise it higher, but nothing in the press releases I skimmed suggested $6.99 was an intro.

$10 would be expensive for a Playdek release, even one with as much love and as much complexity as Agricola. Some smaller devs drop higher prices for board game ports. I think Caylus and Le Havre are up there but not Playdek in my experience. Hell, Playdek has sales often enough. You'll be waiting quite a while, probably until their next big release, but Agricola WILL at some point go on sale. Believe that.

So is baldur's gate worth six dollars? Well, plus however much the IAP stuff is to get the complete game? So I guess more like fifteen dollars?

I ran into this with KOTOR. It basically needs double the space of the actual filesize, to expand and install. Once installed, it takes up the amount of space listed. But in order to get it on there, you'll need to free up double. Sucks.

Thanks for the thorough response. It sucks because i have $4.12 in itunes credit. I was pretty amped for Agricola but was not expecting that price point.

FYI you can get around this problem by installing it via iTunes (syncing). It only needs double the space if you download and install on your iOS device. But generally I use this as an opportunity to clear stuff off I am not playing, so I just do that.

Yah, that definitely appears to be the case about needing double space for install. Once it finished downloaded it appears under usage as 1.7 gb. Yeah I could have installed it through my computer but I'm too lazy for that. Besides, Simpsons tapped out was just taking up room anyway...

I used the "Like This" button a lot in the last page or so. Good job, guys.

Kotaku is gushing about Avengers Alliance, a Marvel game that started on Facebook and is now free on iOS. That's a little dangerous description, but seems quite a few people dig it.

If you've got $0.99 and want a bullet-hell shooter, the recently released and 5-star reviewed Danmaku Ultimate 2 is on sale.

I'm playing Scurvy Scallywags enough that I may buy the $0.99 gold doubler, even though I paid for the game. The challenge is such that every level is touch. The gameplay, while match-3, has taken me several hours to actually get -- especially since you have to dodge enemies while getting your attack to a point that you can beat them without losing a heart.

So much hate for Beyond Ynth in the App Store reviews (iPhone version's also free, by the way). Apparently, people are really mad that the new levels are under a $0.99 IAP pack rather than free.

Anyone having problems with their ITunes account. For some reason, ours says it cant link paypal to the account. tried to redeem a gift card and that didn't work either.  Says we have a balance of $5.44 But if we cant link our paypal and a gift card code doesn't work, what are we too do? The account is like frozen and cant even download stuff previously purchased or anything.  Any ideas?

It could be a password issue. Are you trying it only on your phone, or on the PC too? If only on phone, is there a PC where you can try it? If so, I'd suggest shutting down iTunes, restart it, then go to Store - View Account. See if it pops up with a password or other type of authorization message. Managing such things on the phone itself doesn't always seem to work properly.

sad. it's so good! and… holy jeeze what an entitled douche:

do not support these greedy devs!

Not every company can afford to give you free expansion packs. But since a few do - I imagine Rovio was the first - there are those who think every one of them should.

I just downloaded tapatalk. I havent played with it much. Is there a way to reply, or is it read-only? Anybody have tapatalk 2 and know if its much different/better? I just added it to my wish list in case.

I tried Tapatalk but it seems too limited to be of use to me. I'm kinda irritated that Scallywags went free right after I bought it, but at least I only paid 99 cents and have gotten more than my moneys worth. I think it rose from .99 to 1.99 right before going free, those 1.99 buyers got screwed.

So far liking Tapatalk a lot! Makes browsing and replying much faster. Where are all of the Father's Day sales? I would at least think EA would run their $.99 sales for all of their sports games.

For those who play 1000 Heroz, the servers are back up. Make sure to Adventure back a few days to get all the golds.
It won't let me, because it doesn't remember that I have the full version (I got it free when they had a sale, shortly before it went perma-free, so I had the full unlocked version), and I don't want to pay 99 cents to get it back. Oh well, thanks for the update.

Not a deal, but excited to say that XCOM:Enemy Unkown comes out Thursday for $20. It's universal with iCloud support and will eventually have multiplayer as a free update, but most importantly it has no IAP. I already own it on my PC, but I'll gladly double dip to support devs willing to give us a AAA experience on a mobile platform. More details in the article.
http://toucharcade.com/2013/06/17/xcom-enemy-unknown-hits-the-app-store-this-thursday-for-19-99/
Definitely excited for XCOM, and glad there are others that don't think every iOS game should be $0.99, regardless of the content it provides. I really hope this starts a trend of more companies providing full fledged games of AAA quality on iOS. Maybe if sales are good they can try to move over Civ V.

I don't think every game should be .99 on iOS (or any mobile platform), but I do think this is a bit too high. Not that it's not worth it, but there are many people who won't bite simply because of the price, putting it in less people's hands. And since I already have it on both PC and PS3, I just can't justify that much for it. I'll wait for a price drop, though. Curious to know how they do the transition.

And I really hope they do NOT port Civ V. Civ IV would be amazing. Civ V, no thanks. Even with Gods & Kings, it's far inferior to IV. IMO, YMMV, and all that.

That's unfortunate. Have you tried Tweeting @RedLynxGamer and seeing if they can help?

Actually, are you guessedagain on there? That account is top-ranked on the CAG clan in the 10-day leaderboard. If not, that's quite a coincidence.

That's me. Hoping to join you in the CAG all time top 3 before the whole thing is over, but Slainet is making me work for it.

I'm not saying XCOM isn't worth $20, but I don't think I'd pay $20 for it. I'm kind of interested in it though, heard it's a good game.
It's hard to think of iOS games that haven't eventually gone on sale. Only big one I can think of is Minecraft which has stayed at $7 since it came out (correct me if I'm wrong).

I'm patient enough to wait to purchase XCOM for iOS when it hits $10 or less. Like everybody else, I have enough of a backlog to keep me entertained long enough for XCOM to have a sale or price drop.

Already have XCOM on PC and would only imagine myself playing this on my iPad, so I don't think  I'll buy it since the iPad is not something I generally carry around. Awesome game though and worth the $20 if you don't have a good PC (on sale for $12 for PC at Newegg).

I bought Xcom during black friday for $30 on PC. Well worth it at that price. If this is the same exact game but optimized for iPad, then $20 is a great price. We like to think that $60 is the normal price for console and PC games (unless you're a CAG) and that all apps should be $.99. That should not be the case. I'll gladly pay more for quality. Maybe people will pass on this game because it's $20 but when you think about it, Walking Dead is $20-$25 and look how amazing that game is.
