Apple Game Center

Apple Game Center allows you to keep a friends list, track your in game achievements, and compare with your friends. Many games support this.

Make sure to checkout the official CAG Game Center Exchange Thread. You can post your game center name and see the names of your favorite CAG'rs.

General iOS FAQ

1. Make sure to check for periodic updates either in iTunes or on your iOS devices. For each release of new firmware, there's usually a bunch of games updated right afterward.

2. Some applications also go on sale by their authors when they reach 1 million download and similar milestones.

3. Apps often have specials the day before, during, and after holidays, regardless if said game/app is related to the holiday. Most notably is the fact that many developers discount their apps for Christmas and because Apple employees, in charge of App Store changes, take a break during the week of Christmas these discounts usually last until the new year.

4. Newly released apps will often have a % or dollar amount off for a limited period of time to gain a large following quicker. While browsing the app store you can go to a particular type or genre and order according to release date. This can make finding new app discounts faster.

5. Apps can be re-downloaded from your iOS device. To do this open the App Store and look for a tab called "Purchased". From here you can re-download any previously purchased apps.

6. I strongly advise not to buy iTunes Gift Cards by 3rd parties unless you know they can be trusted. Retail stores and receiving cards as gifts are the best ways. There are many credit card scams, stolen cards, hacked cards going around, especially on Ebay.

7. If you are the victim of a iTunes Card scam or get your account locked due to one not all hope is lost. Apple has been fairly lenient on these issues. Call Apple directly at 1-800-MY-APPLE or check the iTunes Store support page. Also going to your local Apple Store to discuss it can help. The account locking is an automated process and can be reversed. This can take time so be cautious if you use gift cards from 3rd party sources.

8. If you somehow break your iOS device, you have some options. If you bought the Applecare warranty it should be covered for most items. If your Applecare ran out or you don't have one, try using one of the repair guides on iFixit to repair it yourself. Apple Stores have been known to give discounts if you bring in a iOS device that they will not fix since it's not in warranty. This discount however is very small.

9. Using a screen protector can extend the life of your device. Most stores carry these, but they can be hard to install. The best I have personally used are made by a company called Power Support. They have both clear and anti-glare protectors. They are easier to install because the protector is a firm yet thin piece of plastic. Griffin Technologies and Zagg are also very good.

10. Universal Apps have a small plus sign in the upper left corner next to their price. They can be played natively on both the iPad and iPod/iPhone. iPhone games that are not universal can still be played on the iPad with a lower resolution. Non universal iPad games cannot be played on the iPhone.

Games by Genre as Recommended by Fellow CAGs

Feel free to add games, genres or move titles as needed. This list is to give CAGs a chance to catch up on high-quality games they may have missed and to get new users started on "can't miss" titles to download for their new iDevice.

Green titles are universal (ipad and iphone/ipod touch).
Italic are iPad only.
^ are retina optimized for the iPad.
* are iPhone 5/5th gen iPod Touch optimized.
Some game developers/companies like to offer free versions which are usually demos of the full version and a great way to check out and determine if you will actually like a particular game without paying anything. These demos are noted as such. Some game developers/companies like Zynga, however, like to offer free, AD-Supported, versions of their games which means you get the full game, but it features ads and by buying the paid version you remove those ads. AD-Supported games are noted as such.

99 cents each.
How about making a new Mac thread instead of putting it here in the wrong thread?

Reading about OS X deals is a waste of time for people without a Mac (more than 90% of us).
Mac deals show up here sometimes, but they are so incredibly infrequent that the whole thing is pretty much a non-issue. I know it's incredibly difficult trying to skip over an entire post about every other month, but you'll learn to make do. I believe in you.

I think nearly everything is 99 cents for iphone/2.99 for ipad.

Does anyone have opinions on Dark Knight Rises (down to 99 cents) or Wild Blood (also .99)?
Don't know about Wild Blood, but I wasn't too thrilled with DKR. I think once you take away the whiz-bang graphics, you pretty much just have another typical mediocre licensed game. You have an open world to explore, but it's a very dull world. Combat is bland and kinda difficult with the touch controls.

Thanks. I keep falling for these really pretty console-style games when they hit .99 and then always find them too frustrating to control and give up on them quickly. The ones designed for touch control at least work a little better than a console port like GTA3 or Vice City, I can't manage to play those two. It's not worth the frustration, that's not a good gameplay experience to me.

Don't forget about Fast Five the Movie game, also 99¢. Most likely to celebrate the release of the Fast and the Furious 6 movie.

I tried The Amazing Spiderman and The Dark Knight Rises on Android; total nightmare for both. I tried The Dark Knight Rises on my iPod Touch 5G and it's a bit jittery, but still perfectly playable, especially compared to the Android version. I imagine on an iPad 2 or higher, it will fare much better. Haven't tried The Amazing Spiderman on iOS yet, but I'm buying it right now, along with Fast Five. Wild Blood was a surprise to me; it ran pretty good on Android, but on my iPod Touch 5G, it ran perfectly. Probably one of the only Gameloft games I'l recommend for both Android and iOS, along with Asphalt 6 Adrenaline.

Amazing Spidey ran okay on iPad 4, was unplayable on iPod Touch 5. I didn't really enjoy the game, I found the controls awkward like on most games of this type, and probably only spent 15 minutes on it.

Was it unplayable control-wise or performance-wise? I can adapt to different size devices (I have devices that have 4, 5, 7, and 10 inch screens) so it won't be a problem for me if it's control-wise.

Performance. It was stuttering like crazy, I couldn't control the game because of it. I don't think anyone could play it in that state. I don't think it should be sold for a device that can't run it.

Puzzlejuice has gone to 99 cents, I keep reading good things about this but wish I could try it before buying. Yeah, I'm gonna buy it.

Yikes! The iPod Touch 5G's and iPhone 4S's A5 are no pushovers. Didn't think there would be a game that was that unoptimized for that chip.

I don't know. I tried shutting down all my apps and then did a restart of the device. It didn't change anything, so I think it would behave this way for everyone. It was really bad.

Bananas are on sale at my local supermarket. It's the Peacock in Shimo Kitazawa. Only 150 yen a bunch.

Amazing, off-topic deals like this will only appear about every other month (probably immediately after off-topic Mac deals). It may be incredibly difficult for you to skip over them, but hey, I believe in you too.

Man, when is Baldur's Gate going to get a sale ... It was $7 on Steam over the weekend and that's for the full version ... no ipad love

Free Magicka is a good deal, just bought it at $2 like 3 days ago but whatever...i'm sure everyone that deal hunts hits something like this at least once.

If it is like the regular DS games, each game has like 5 cases so those are probably what they are calling episodes so they are letting you play the first 2 cases in the first game.
Not a sale, but KOTOR (iPad only) was just added to the App Store. $9.99, but I'll add it to my wish list and wait for a sale.
I absolutely love this game. Might have to pick it up when I get home tonight.

Just came here to post this myself! haha

I too am going to wait for a sale though. I already paid full price when this came out forever ago and even rebought it on Steam just to have it there.

I will probably be a sucker for under $5 though.

Same here. I have owned it several times, so will wait for a sale. Really excited for the possibilities though, if the company decides to do other iOS ports of games they have redone for mac. Would be nice to get Civ IV on ipad

Oh hell yes. Civ IV I would pay full price for.

I haven't played Knights of Old Republic 1 or 2 yet, but weren't they plagued with bugs on both pc and consoles? So I assume the ipad version is just a simple port from the pc?
I haven't played Knights of Old Republic 1 or 2 yet, but weren't they plagued with bugs on both pc and consoles? So I assume the ipad version is just a simple port from the pc?
I don't remember running into any bugs in KOTOR 1 or 2. I'm sure there were some, but I definitely wouldn't say they were "plagued" with them at all...certainly not that weren't patched.

I agree that they had their fair share of bugs but nothing more than average I would say.

As Bullwinkle said too, I had more issues with the second one than the first one anyway.
Warhammer Quest came out tonight, it's not on sale but it's supposed to be a pretty big deal. I just bought it, $4.99.
I haven't been able to put this down for the last few days. $5 well spent if you like that type of game.

Word, I have 9.5 hours into the game now, my warriors are at level 4 with 6/9 main quests done. I'm going to buy the expansion once I finish. This game made most of my other dungeon games obsolete so I deleted em. Hope they sell a lot of copies so they can make more expansions. They REALLY need to fix that stupid ass "rotate to access inventory" though, they said they will look into it.
KOTOR 2 had some big issues, IIRC. I don't remember anything major for KOTOR 1, though.
Yeah KOTOR 2 was the one that had more bugs. It was made by Obsidian which is known for making ambitious games that end up rushed and buggy.
