Apple Game Center

Apple Game Center allows you to keep a friends list, track your in game achievements, and compare with your friends. Many games support this.

Make sure to checkout the official CAG Game Center Exchange Thread. You can post your game center name and see the names of your favorite CAG'rs.

General iOS FAQ

1. Make sure to check for periodic updates either in iTunes or on your iOS devices. For each release of new firmware, there's usually a bunch of games updated right afterward.

2. Some applications also go on sale by their authors when they reach 1 million download and similar milestones.

3. Apps often have specials the day before, during, and after holidays, regardless if said game/app is related to the holiday. Most notably is the fact that many developers discount their apps for Christmas and because Apple employees, in charge of App Store changes, take a break during the week of Christmas these discounts usually last until the new year.

4. Newly released apps will often have a % or dollar amount off for a limited period of time to gain a large following quicker. While browsing the app store you can go to a particular type or genre and order according to release date. This can make finding new app discounts faster.

5. Apps can be re-downloaded from your iOS device. To do this open the App Store and look for a tab called "Purchased". From here you can re-download any previously purchased apps.

6. I strongly advise not to buy iTunes Gift Cards by 3rd parties unless you know they can be trusted. Retail stores and receiving cards as gifts are the best ways. There are many credit card scams, stolen cards, hacked cards going around, especially on Ebay.

7. If you are the victim of a iTunes Card scam or get your account locked due to one not all hope is lost. Apple has been fairly lenient on these issues. Call Apple directly at 1-800-MY-APPLE or check the iTunes Store support page. Also going to your local Apple Store to discuss it can help. The account locking is an automated process and can be reversed. This can take time so be cautious if you use gift cards from 3rd party sources.

8. If you somehow break your iOS device, you have some options. If you bought the Applecare warranty it should be covered for most items. If your Applecare ran out or you don't have one, try using one of the repair guides on iFixit to repair it yourself. Apple Stores have been known to give discounts if you bring in a iOS device that they will not fix since it's not in warranty. This discount however is very small.

9. Using a screen protector can extend the life of your device. Most stores carry these, but they can be hard to install. The best I have personally used are made by a company called Power Support. They have both clear and anti-glare protectors. They are easier to install because the protector is a firm yet thin piece of plastic. Griffin Technologies and Zagg are also very good.

10. Universal Apps have a small plus sign in the upper left corner next to their price. They can be played natively on both the iPad and iPod/iPhone. iPhone games that are not universal can still be played on the iPad with a lower resolution. Non universal iPad games cannot be played on the iPhone.

Games by Genre as Recommended by Fellow CAGs

Feel free to add games, genres or move titles as needed. This list is to give CAGs a chance to catch up on high-quality games they may have missed and to get new users started on "can't miss" titles to download for their new iDevice.

Green titles are universal (ipad and iphone/ipod touch).
Italic are iPad only.
^ are retina optimized for the iPad.
* are iPhone 5/5th gen iPod Touch optimized.
Some game developers/companies like to offer free versions which are usually demos of the full version and a great way to check out and determine if you will actually like a particular game without paying anything. These demos are noted as such. Some game developers/companies like Zynga, however, like to offer free, AD-Supported, versions of their games which means you get the full game, but it features ads and by buying the paid version you remove those ads. AD-Supported games are noted as such.
My son got Mushroom Wars last night and played for a bit and then told me it was insisting he had to download something to keep playing the campaign. So maybe it isn't really free? I haven't had time to check it out myself yet to see exactly what he is talking about.
I played it a little then it tried to charge me $3.99 for more maps/stages. I ended up deleting it.
Is there a way to access the old thread, was looking for info on what apps people were using to track price drops or to keep lists of apps to track prices for
We use AppZapp and AppShopper Social, in addition to the website www.appshopper.com. TouchArcade also occasionally gives sale and freebie alerts.

Crazy Taxi has dropped in price to $0.99 (originally $4.99). Lowest ever seen prior to this drop was $1.99.
* This game does not support iPad Gen 1, iPhone 3G/3GS and iPod touch Gen 1, 2 and 4 *
Optimized for iPhone 5.

iSlash and iSlash HD are free, this is a neat little game.

123D Creature for iPad is free

Fluxe is free

The House of the Dead: Overkill has dropped from 4.99 to 2.99. Just came out on April 24, sucks for early adopters. *This apparently comes with 2 chapters, the third chapter is unlocked via IAP.

I've been playing Mushroom Wars iPhone version, after 8 levels there is a popup that says "$1.99 to purchase 24 more levels". If you chose "Later" it bounces you back to the map with no option but to replay the first 8 levels. Kinda sucks cause the store advertises "A campaign with 32 levels" but on the other hand it is a free app so if you feel the game is worth 1.99 then it's the same as buying a 1.99 app. Does leave a semi bad taste, but you don't have to let it get under your skin. I've enjoyed the game so far, undecided on paying for the rest.

Meh - I don't like that tactic. It will be gone as soon as I get to the iPad. My son just went and played our PS3 copy instead ;).

I think it'd be alright as long as it's a free app and they made it clear in the description that you only get 8 levels before paying. In this case they don't make it clear in the store description but still, it's free so no loss. I'm just saying it doesn't make me mad, it's still a shitty tactic but whatever.

That's just my experience with the iphone version, have not tried iPad yet but I know it used to be a paid app. I would have to imagine the pay wall didn't exist while it was paid.

Never picked this up on PSN, it feels made for the touch screen tho. I really like the art style but I don't think I wanna pay the $2, or on iPad the $4. I'd buy it for 99 cents.

Sky Gamblers: Storm Raiders is 99 cents

Crabitron is now down to 99c. I think it's a clever game, but you pretty much have to sit at a table to play it and I don't do that. They did mention a future one-handed mode (second claw mirroring the first claw), and I'll probably play it more if and when that is out. This dropping to 99 cents is depressing, though. Not because I paid full price, but because stuff really does not sell unless it is 99 cents or free with lots of IAP. I hope X-Com is a success at a premium price, but I'm kind of doubting it.

It's almost 50,000,000,000 downloads time! For such a milestone, there has to be a huge wave of sales/giveaways on the AppStore. I got my eyes glued on the countdown timer. It's no iPad giveaway, but still. $500 in AppStore currency means I won't be paying for an app out of pocket for a while. $10,000 in AppStore currency means that I probably won't be paying for an app for the rest of my life.

Well, you have a window of about .002 of a second to get one of the first 50 app downloads.

True that. The timer is flying right now. But it doesn't hurt to try. Even if I don't win any of the 51 gift cards, I can still look forward to the app sales/giveaways in the aftermath of the milestone.

Where do you see a countdown timer?

EDIT: Never mind, I found it on their website. Why can't they put this in the App Store section of iTunes itself?

It is there. Right next to the App of The Week, which is Asphalt 7. Heck, it even appears in the iTunes home page.

It is odd. I have the countdown right here on iTunes. Do you have iTunes for a different region? Maybe that has something to do with it.

I'll make a blind effort and hope for the best. My music collection could use a $10,000 boost.

Not sure what region you're in. I'm in the US (Ohio). In iTunes, I see where the app of the week is, and next to it is the link to the countdown timer APP, but there isn't any actual countdown. I've attached a screenshot so you can see what I mean. Are you seeing something different?
Ah, I see what you mean! Do you have the latest version of Quicktime on your computer?
Just checked, and yes.

I would imagine it's close to the exact number once you load the page. If you notice, if you leave the page running for several minutes, and then refresh, it'll jump to a slightly different number. So, I'm guessing it's getting the number from somewhere when the page is loaded, and then just increasing at a constant rate after that. I tried looking through the page source for the script, but it was a jumbled mess, and I gave up.

By the way, you don't actually have to download anything to enter. You can fill out a submission form here:
https://www.apple.com/itunes/50-billion-app-countdown/entry-form/
Has to be submitted at the correct time, though (i.e. when 49,999,999,999 apps have been downloaded). You can try 25 times, though.

Has anybody delved into Sid Meiers Ace Patrol yet?

Looks cool and I love Sid Meier games, but im wondering how much IAP destroys it
Gotta love the "Counter for illustrative purposes only." disclaimer. I wonder how close to the real number it even is?
Darn it, I didn't see that disclaimer. Don't I feel like a fool.

I have Ace Patrol.. whatcha looking for? It's ok. I would buy only the British pack so you unlock them. I don't think I've enjoyed the All-nations pack too much. I also bought the Aces to support Sid's attempts to make decent games. The game is ok. It gets very punishing at higher levels. I'm getting way better the more I play.

It's already gotten more play time than Leviathan Warships and I spent half the cost overall.

I REFUSE to buy the .99 addons for health/repairs/whatnot. So no idea.

@ Counter

Yea, the counter is an approximation but occasionally it DOES jump to a somewhat correct number. I didn't notice a big difference in the counter from 4am to 9 am to noon to 3pm. I would have expected it to move faster with the U.S. waking up and throughout the work day.
Has anybody delved into Sid Meiers Ace Patrol yet?

I'm playing it and likes it a lot. The "free" part seems like an extended demo. IAP for campaigns are a bit pricy but still cheaper than to Sid's PC titles. I'm not so sure about IAPs for aces and instant heals, that feels wrong somehow.

War of Eclipse is free. I don't see any details as for how long. The game is usually $1.99 I believe. I've been looking at it for a while. Seemed like an interesting cyber/steam-punk /sci-fi ship battle sort of game.

I'm pretty happy with this find :)

I believe I beat every level of Zentomino. Good times.
Thanks for tip on wrestling game. Haven't heard of that, and I try to play 'em all.

Oh, the dedicated iPad version of Wrestling Revolution (HD) that's free as well, but note the $4.99 IAP for "Pro Upgrade," so it might just be a demo. The regular Universal app says it's designed more for iPhone, oddly. That's not confusing at all, right?
N.O.V.A. 3

and

Gangstar Rio City of Saints

Both free right now.
Totally shocked, really. Not only are these games high profile, but they normally go for $6.99. I would've expected it at 99¢, but free$! I just quickly made space on my iPod for Gangstar Rio, since they ruined the Android version for my tablet, and GR is an optimal experience on iOS devices.

Story of my life. Thank goodness the save file gets backed up to my PC with the app on iOS, so I don't have to worry when deleting apps from my iPod. Thank goodness as well that Google is finally getting with the program and is starting to add Google Cloud backup of save games on Android, so now I can start deleting unused apps there as well for my Android tablets.

Not sure about that... I think that when you delete an app from your device, the next backup made does not include the save data for the deleted app. I don't think it's saving any save files for those apps.

You're right. I just started up some of the games that I deleted and they started from the beginning. That's strange. I reinstalled many games that still had the game saves on them, unless it was that those games had iCloud saves. In this case, I better be careful what I delete.
