General iOS FAQ

1. Make sure to check for periodic updates either in iTunes or on your iOS devices. For each release of new firmware, there's usually a bunch of games updated right afterward.

2. Some applications also go on sale by their authors when they reach 1 million download and similar milestones.

3. Apps often have specials the day before, during, and after holidays, regardless if said game/app is related to the holiday. Most notably is the fact that many developers discount their apps for Christmas and because Apple employees, in charge of App Store changes, take a break during the week of Christmas these discounts usually last until the new year.

4. Newly released apps will often have a % or dollar amount off for a limited period of time to gain a large following quicker. While browsing the app store you can go to a particular type or genre and order according to release date. This can make finding new app discounts faster.

5. Apps can be re-downloaded from your iOS device. To do this open the App Store and look for a tab called "Purchased". From here you can re-download any previously purchased apps.

6. I strongly advise not to buy iTunes Gift Cards by 3rd parties unless you know they can be trusted. Retail stores and receiving cards as gifts are the best ways. There are many credit card scams, stolen cards, hacked cards going around, especially on Ebay.

7. If you are the victim of a iTunes Card scam or get your account locked due to one not all hope is lost. Apple has been fairly lenient on these issues. Call Apple directly at 1-800-MY-APPLE or check the iTunes Store support page. Also going to your local Apple Store to discuss it can help. The account locking is an automated process and can be reversed. This can take time so be cautious if you use gift cards from 3rd party sources.

8. If you somehow break your iOS device, you have some options. If you bought the Applecare warranty it should be covered for most items. If your Applecare ran out or you don't have one, try using one of the repair guides on iFixit to repair it yourself. Apple Stores have been known to give discounts if you bring in a iOS device that they will not fix since it's not in warranty. This discount however is very small.

9. Using a screen protector can extend the life of your device. Most stores carry these, but they can be hard to install. The best I have personally used are made by a company called Power Support. They have both clear and anti-glare protectors. They are easier to install because the protector is a firm yet thin piece of plastic. Griffin Technologies and Zagg are also very good.

10. Universal Apps have a small plus sign in the upper left corner next to their price. They can be played natively on both the iPad and iPod/iPhone. iPhone games that are not universal can still be played on the iPad with a lower resolution. Non universal iPad games cannot be played on the iPhone.

Games by Genre as Recommended by Fellow CAGs

Feel free to add games, genres or move titles as needed. This list is to give CAGs a chance to catch up on high-quality games they may have missed and to get new users started on "can't miss" titles to download for their new iDevice.

Green titles are universal (ipad and iphone/ipod touch).
Italic are iPad only.
^ are retina optimized for the iPad.
* are iPhone 5/5th gen iPod Touch optimized.
Some game developers/companies like to offer free versions which are usually demos of the full version and a great way to check out and determine if you will actually like a particular game without paying anything. These demos are noted as such. Some game developers/companies like Zynga, however, like to offer free, AD-Supported, versions of their games which means you get the full game, but it features ads and by buying the paid version you remove those ads. AD-Supported games are noted as such.

Not looking to further the whole debate BUT despite the fact that you will find lots of knockoffs/clones out to make a quick buck (evidenced by all the Flappy Bird knockoffs/clones) there are still great developers creating great games. Yes I understand the horrors of the free to play model (and no the model in theory isn't bad just riddled with bad examples) and with the recent release of RCT4 it looks like the horrors are getting worse. Regardless, though, great games do still exist. You want proof, just check out the OP of this thread (of which I've made many contributions) where you find MANY great apps listed. Also check out the latest posts in this thread and posts on TouchArcade.

Almost two weeks ago a fantastic game by the name of Monument Valley was released. It's $2.99, is not free to play or anything like that and it looks amazing. A very refreshing game in my opinion. Yes I felt it was a little short for what it was but I imagine in time either content added freely via a simple update or via IAPs would solve that. Point is that no less than 24 hours after the game launched was it being advertised in the App Store with a big banner at the top of the home page. So there is great apps but you just have to know where to look.

I'm too lazy at the moment to quote the exact post but I know someone a few pages back mentioned that you should wait to get games on iOS because they all eventually go free. Unfortunately I'd have to say that isn't true. It really depends on the developer. I'll use two of my favorite games as an example. Just look at Carcassonne and Settlers of Catan for iPad. Both extremely well done versions of their physical counterparts but NEVER have either of these apps been free. Yes they've both been on sale before, Settlers of Catan more so than Carcassonne but again neither have ever been free. I could list countless other examples but the two I listed more than make my point.

Most games that go from non-free to free either:

A) have lots of IAPs (in which case, they were probably only $.99 games to begin with)

B) changed pricing models (e.g. went F2P, or perhaps are now basically demos with IAPs to unlock full game)

C) are being used to heighten interest in a recently released/upcoming sequel.

In all the above cases, those are business decisions designed to make money. It's not like (most) games are just going free for no reason.

I'm not saying it isn't a good business decision.  I'm also not saying to NOT spend ANY money.  Some dev's are worth it.  I'm just pointing out with obvious CAG-ness that most games anymore hit free at some point within a couple months of launch.  Whether that is to increase hype, make money, don't care.  It's free and my CAG-bells go crazy when I hear free.  But I'm very wary anymore.

Hearthstone needs to hurry up, that's the next iOS game I'm waiting for.

I also have both games mentioned.  I also bought Neuroshima Hex when it first came out.  That game was CRAZY worth it.  But those kinds of "worth it" games are becoming rarer with the oversaturation of the iMarket.

Thanks for Horn.  I see a bunch of IAP's.  Anything I should sort through or just wait?  Games likely to be backlogged.

Kinda glad I don't have an ipad yet and Hearthstone isn't on iphone.  I played the hell out of it on the PC last week.  This would more than likely swallow my soul right now

Glad it's finally out. Just couldn't ever get into magic on the ipad with the thought of all those iap lingering in the back of my head, never could figure out if I only needed just the premium or what (maybe someone here with some experience can give me some insight). Plus there was always the odd crash and just wierdness. Have a few other card games but haven't gotten in to them just because at first glance they appeared really involved and haven't had the time.  Hearthstone hits a nice balance, extremely easy to pick up and no iaps necessary. Just wish the cards had a bit more depth and strategy to them like magic which seems to hit the best balance of complexity and ease of pick up for a card game for me

of course for free you really can't beat hearthstone

Anyone know if Hearthstone is coming to the iphone? I have an iPad, but would much prefer to play it at work on my phone...

Now that's ^^^^ what I'm talking about!

And yes, iPhone and android versions will be coming out, but there is no estimated release date for those platforms. Industry experts (guys who play video games and guess about this sh*t) think sometime around the holiday shopping season.

I don't even like card games ... And yet Hearthstone is addicting as hell. I think it's the mix of WoW+card game that works for me ... plus Blizzard always wins me over with the high production values.

Ok... a couple of things...

IAPs via Apple are about $5 bucks more than if you buy the same thing on the PC.  Buy it on PC if you have the chance.

Do your tutorials for the extra 10-20 cards.  Get your characters to lvl 10.  Each class plays now like it'll play later.  The card combos are a bit different but the idea is the same.

Don't sweat losing.  The starter decks are great to learn on.  And they do win quite a bit.  The game is good about putting similar people together.

I bought quite a few cards.. made some more... and then got quite a few free packs from Arena's and whatnot.  Until you KNOW what you're looking for it's not worth buying cards.

N00b Hearthstone question: How much mileage can I get playing against the AI instead of human opponents?
You can't complete daily quests again the AI, which is where most of your gold comes from, nor do you get the 10gold/3win bonus for against AI. The only thing AI is useful for is leveling up before level 10 (exp is drastically decreased vs AI post-level 10).

In what country? In the U.S., they're exactly the same.

Yeah they encourage you to play against other people.

If you were to play only against the AI, there are 9 different classes to level. You can get them up to level 10 and they'll reward you with cards as you level up. There's two levels of AI: normal and expert. LIke madcatz said though, the EXP takes a dive against AI once you get that specific class to level 10.

I'd say it's worth trying. It's a fun game and inviting to the casual player. I didn't want to play against people, but the limited reactions you can make towards the other player (Thanks, Well Played, etc) make it more enjoyable for me that I regularly just queue up in Play and Arena modes.

Man, I am just not good at this game. I've lost horribly at the first 3 online games I played, and it's sucked the enjoyment from it. Maybe I just suck at building decks. Last game I played ended with the other player having like 8 cards on the board vs my 1.

Is there an option to play vs friends rather than some random schlepp??  That may mitigate the online factor for those who are hesitant to play against strangers.

Yup, I'm in the EXACT same boat as you. Everything about the game is great up until I actually start playing it. I'm always overplaying my hand, so it gets in the later rounds and I have 10 mana and only 1 or 2 cards to play. And I have no idea how to build a good deck. Or what should even be in a good deck. I'm hoping that when they introduce the story mode (or whatever it's called) it has some tutorial stuff built in, more gradual learning/deckbuilding curve.

This was how I felt at the start of the month. I started playing during the 4th beta test season, so I got a feel for it before the official release. But when that happened, that was another beast altogether. People in my rank had 2 or 3 legendary cards in their decks. No way I could compete with that, and I didn't play again until the ipad version dropped.

Deckbuilding - There are a couple good online resources, where people have actually posted decks that they have used if you're just starting out. Hearthpwn and Icy Veins are the two that come to mind. Look for decks with lots of commons. As someone said earlier, too, you'll want to try and get all your classes to level 10 to get all of their main cards unlocked.

Yes. The friend icon is in the bottom left corner. I haven't tried it yet on the ipad, but on the PC, you can just select a person and start a match. These matches will always be casual matches (I think), not ranked.

See, they say it's not pay to win, but I have to assume that's how these guys are getting their cards.

There were 4 test seasons, which lasted about 2 weeks each, I think. That doesn't count the closed beta period, whose cards also carried over. There have been people playing this game for 4-6 months already when you look at it that way.

Edit: I haven't paid any actual cash (and I won't either) and I'm at rank 18 this go round. It's nothing to brag about, but with the cards I have, I think I'm doing okay. And only losing 1-2 hours of sleep because I'm playing Hearthstone instead.

Yeah me too. I keep getting my ass handed to me. I'm no stranger to deck building games, and I think my decks are pretty solid. But there are a lot of buff cards that others seem to have that apparently I haven't gotten to yet. Fun game but it can be frustrating when you have to lose a bunch of times to grind.

Make sure you get challenges that aren't based on win requirements, then you'll be able to progress even if you're losing.

I was rolling people with my Murloc deck.  It's ridiculous if you can't stop the train once it starts rolling.  It just keeps going.  You could go from none to 8 Murlocs on the field with charge in one turn.  It's nice ;-) (and then have 2-3 more cards drawn in the process giving you more fodder for next turn)
