Apple Game Center

Apple Game Center allows you to keep a friends list, track your in game achievements, and compare with your friends. Many games support this.

Make sure to checkout the official CAG Game Center Exchange Thread. You can post your game center name and see the names of your favorite CAG'rs.

General iOS FAQ

1. Make sure to check for periodic updates either in iTunes or on your iOS devices. For each release of new firmware, there's usually a bunch of games updated right afterward.

2. Some applications also go on sale by their authors when they reach 1 million download and similar milestones.

3. Apps often have specials the day before, during, and after holidays, regardless if said game/app is related to the holiday. Most notably is the fact that many developers discount their apps for Christmas and because Apple employees, in charge of App Store changes, take a break during the week of Christmas these discounts usually last until the new year.

4. Newly released apps will often have a % or dollar amount off for a limited period of time to gain a large following quicker. While browsing the app store you can go to a particular type or genre and order according to release date. This can make finding new app discounts faster.

5. Apps can be re-downloaded from your iOS device. To do this open the App Store and look for a tab called "Purchased". From here you can re-download any previously purchased apps.

6. I strongly advise not to buy iTunes Gift Cards by 3rd parties unless you know they can be trusted. Retail stores and receiving cards as gifts are the best ways. There are many credit card scams, stolen cards, hacked cards going around, especially on Ebay.

7. If you are the victim of a iTunes Card scam or get your account locked due to one not all hope is lost. Apple has been fairly lenient on these issues. Call Apple directly at 1-800-MY-APPLE or check the iTunes Store support page. Also going to your local Apple Store to discuss it can help. The account locking is an automated process and can be reversed. This can take time so be cautious if you use gift cards from 3rd party sources.

8. If you somehow break your iOS device, you have some options. If you bought the Applecare warranty it should be covered for most items. If your Applecare ran out or you don't have one, try using one of the repair guides on iFixit to repair it yourself. Apple Stores have been known to give discounts if you bring in a iOS device that they will not fix since it's not in warranty. This discount however is very small.

9. Using a screen protector can extend the life of your device. Most stores carry these, but they can be hard to install. The best I have personally used are made by a company called Power Support. They have both clear and anti-glare protectors. They are easier to install because the protector is a firm yet thin piece of plastic. Griffin Technologies and Zagg are also very good.

10. Universal Apps have a small plus sign in the upper left corner next to their price. They can be played natively on both the iPad and iPod/iPhone. iPhone games that are not universal can still be played on the iPad with a lower resolution. Non universal iPad games cannot be played on the iPhone.

Games by Genre as Recommended by Fellow CAGs

Feel free to add games, genres or move titles as needed. This list is to give CAGs a chance to catch up on high-quality games they may have missed and to get new users started on "can't miss" titles to download for their new iDevice.

Green titles are universal (ipad and iphone/ipod touch).
Italic are iPad only.
^ are retina optimized for the iPad.
* are iPhone 5/5th gen iPod Touch optimized.
~ (symbol beside the "1" on standard US keyboards) are iPhone 6/6+ optimized. Note that apps that are iPhone 6/6+ optimized are by default iPhone 5/5th gen iPod Touch optimized.
Some game developers/companies like to offer free versions which are usually demos of the full version and a great way to check out and determine if you will actually like a particular game without paying anything. These demos are noted as such. Some game developers/companies like Zynga, however, like to offer free, AD-Supported, versions of their games which means you get the full game, but it features ads and by buying the paid version you remove those ads. AD-Supported games are noted as such.

Have a good weekend!

I'm getting a new iPad for the first time in what feels like a decade so I'm excited to check out some games that will function better than on my Galaxy as well as things available only on iOS.

The big one I'm hoping to get into is Civilization VI. I like turned based games that are fully fleshed out where I don't have to use some virtual joystick. Does Civ VI go on sale often?

Any other recommendations where gameplay just works great on an iPad and is more advanced than most phone games?

Seems like once every few months they put all their DLC on sale. On ios civ6 is a free download and lets you play the first 60 turns I think, after that you need the full game unlock

Either way, yea they put the unlock on sale for 50% or more off pretty frequently

I don't really know what's on iOS but not on Android, myself, but here's a few suggestions.

I like what I've played of Severed. The gameplay is a bit like Infinity Blade if you're familiar with that, but it feels more complete, and the story and presentation are better.

If you like deckbuilding games, Ascension's not bad, but a bunch of the expansions come free when you buy the PC version, and not on mobile.

The mobile versions of Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 are probably the best official versions out there. I don't understand why Sega isn't porting them to other platforms. Sega also has a bunch of other Genesis games for free, as well, though they're ad-supported (I think there's a one-time fee you can pay to get rid of the ads, though).

If you like Monster Hunter and Pokemon-like games, Capcom ported their pokemon-like Monster Hunter spin-off, Monster Hunter Stories, from the 3DS. The resolution and performance are significantly better on iOS.

It's not a complex game by any stretch of the imagination, but I actually quite like 1-Bit Rogue, which is an ultra-simplified take on the roguelike genre. I believe it's free with a purchase that unlocks color graphics.

Cave ported a bunch of their Xbox 360 shmups to iOS, and they control pretty decently even with touchscreen controls. They also support XB1/PS4 controllers.

The Ace Attorney games work great on iOS, but Capcom's been pretty lazy about updating them for newer devices—they still run perfectly, but they don't even fill the full screen on my iPad Air 2, which is what, something like 5 years old now? Maybe more? They also haven't gone on sale in ages, which makes me a bit worried about how much longer they'll be supported going forward.

Phantom Detective also runs great on iOS, but I haven't tried it on my iPad, so I'm not sure if it's suffering from the same problems as Ace Attorney.

Transistor and Bastion both work well with the touch controls, and have XB1/PS4 controller support.

I've heard good things about TheoTown, a city builder, but haven't gotten around to trying it myself.

I would recommend avoiding Oceanhorn despite its relative popularity. The dev tried to ape TLoZ so hard that he forgot to design a halfway decent game under the Zelda trappings.

A great legend of Zelda like game is Swordigo.

Looks like the DLC is on sale again right now for 10$ for the full game unlock, at least thats what my notice said

All of Amanita Design’s (Machinarium, Botanicula) iOS catalog is on sale at 99¢ apiece.

Monster Hunter Stories is on sale for $4.99 (UP: $19.99). Definitely worth your time if you like Monster Hunter and monster collecting games.

Many of Asmodee’s digital board games, such as Carcasonne and Ticket to Ride, are on sale.

Several of Squenix’s games are on sale, though as usual they’re still mostly pretty pricey by iOS standards.

Severed is on sale for 99¢ (UP $6.99).

Umiro and QB - A Cube’s Tale are 99¢ each, both down from $2.99. I don’t know anything about these games, but they both look like quite attractive puzzlers, so if anyone has any experience with them, I’d love to hear opinions.

Yeah Monster Hunter for 75% off is pretty crazy. Not a game I’d play on mobile and I’m hoping more stuff drops tomorrow. Had my eye on a couple games for months now that I’m 100% on iOS. Some of them have even been free in the past and missed it.

For what it’s worth, MHS controls great on a touch screen since the battles are turn based and the controls are simple, and it runs way better on mobile than on 3DS. It also has full PS4/XB1 controller compatibility. Or I'm just misremembering that last part apparently, whoops.

ELOH, a gorgeous music-based puzzler, is on sale for $0.99 (down from $2.99)

Solitairica, a solitaire-based RPG, is half off at $1.99 (UP $3.99)

Flower (created by the developers of Journey) is on sale for $0.99 (down from $4.99)

Are you sure this has PS4/XB1 controller support? I’m not able to find this info anywhere.

(Sorry, meant to include your previous reply, I was asking about Monster Hunter Stories on iOS).

Thanks! I got Eloh. For that price I'll give it a shot. Beats being stressed after a string of losses on Clash Royale. :bomb:

I could have sworn I'd tried it out with my DS4, but apparently I was mistaken, sorry. It looks like MHS doesn't have MFi controller support, and I just tried it on my iPad and nothin'. Sorry again for the misinformation, though I will stress that the touch controls work more than adequately for what the game actually has you doing, this isn't an action-heavy game.

Guys my kid wants to unlock Mario run. Does it work for family share or so I have to buy it on her phone? (My phone has App Store credit, hers is tied to credit card)

My brother bought it and my computer's iTunes is authorized for his account, so I have it too. Family share is different though, I think.

This is a bit of an odd request, but you know those ads that pop up in mobile games where they show puzzles where you have to remove barriers in a certain order to achieve a desired result? Usually these barriers are holding back multiple kinds of liquid and the goal is to get the good liquid in the desired space, or to mix the liquids in some fashion. Those ads are always for completely different kinds of (really shitty freemium) games, but the puzzles actually look like they could be designed in a fairly engaging manner, does anyone know whether there are any actual games centered on similar puzzles? Mobile or not.

I don't know the ads that you speak of, but what you write sounds like the have "Where's My Water"

I think you're referring to the games where you pull a pin that holds back water or lava? If I'm correct, I looked it up on Reddit and found that Hero Rescue is the game that really represents that style. People said Pull the Pin is another game but that one is too easy.

Yeah, that’s the sort I mean. Thanks.

Got this when it was on sale and have been playing since. It's good but can be pretty rng reliant (especially for finding the spells/items you want to appear in the shop between rounds). Well worth the $2 sale price. Thanks for the rec ^^

Awesome, this is exactly what I was hoping to find coming into this thread. I fell in love with the demo a few years ago but always missed the sales.

A bunch of Annapurna Interactive games are on sale right now, including Gorogoa for $0.99.

https://appsliced.co/apps?search=annapurna+interactive

  • Florence $0.99
  • Flower $0.99
  • Gorogoa $0.99
  • Donut County $1.99
  • Gone Home $1.99
  • Journey $2.99
  • Telling Lies $2.99
All iOS universal; unfortunately they sell the games separately on Mac. However, Gorogoa's iPad version runs on my M1 MacBook as of right this moment (I believe they can disable that if they choose).
