General iOS FAQ

1. Make sure to check for periodic updates either in iTunes or on your iOS devices. For each release of new firmware, there's usually a bunch of games updated right afterward.

2. Some applications also go on sale by their authors when they reach 1 million download and similar milestones.

3. Apps often have specials the day before, during, and after holidays, regardless if said game/app is related to the holiday. Most notably is the fact that many developers discount their apps for Christmas and because Apple employees, in charge of App Store changes, take a break during the week of Christmas these discounts usually last until the new year.

4. Newly released apps will often have a % or dollar amount off for a limited period of time to gain a large following quicker. While browsing the app store you can go to a particular type or genre and order according to release date. This can make finding new app discounts faster.

5. Apps can be re-downloaded from your iOS device. To do this open the App Store and look for a tab called "Purchased". From here you can re-download any previously purchased apps.

6. I strongly advise not to buy iTunes Gift Cards by 3rd parties unless you know they can be trusted. Retail stores and receiving cards as gifts are the best ways. There are many credit card scams, stolen cards, hacked cards going around, especially on Ebay.

7. If you are the victim of a iTunes Card scam or get your account locked due to one not all hope is lost. Apple has been fairly lenient on these issues. Call Apple directly at 1-800-MY-APPLE or check the iTunes Store support page. Also going to your local Apple Store to discuss it can help. The account locking is an automated process and can be reversed. This can take time so be cautious if you use gift cards from 3rd party sources.

8. If you somehow break your iOS device, you have some options. If you bought the Applecare warranty it should be covered for most items. If your Applecare ran out or you don't have one, try using one of the repair guides on iFixit to repair it yourself. Apple Stores have been known to give discounts if you bring in a iOS device that they will not fix since it's not in warranty. This discount however is very small.

9. Using a screen protector can extend the life of your device. Most stores carry these, but they can be hard to install. The best I have personally used are made by a company called Power Support. They have both clear and anti-glare protectors. They are easier to install because the protector is a firm yet thin piece of plastic. Griffin Technologies and Zagg are also very good.

10. Universal Apps have a small plus sign in the upper left corner next to their price. They can be played natively on both the iPad and iPod/iPhone. iPhone games that are not universal can still be played on the iPad with a lower resolution. Non universal iPad games cannot be played on the iPhone.

Games by Genre as Recommended by Fellow CAGs

Feel free to add games, genres or move titles as needed. This list is to give CAGs a chance to catch up on high-quality games they may have missed and to get new users started on "can't miss" titles to download for their new iDevice.

Green titles are universal (ipad and iphone/ipod touch).
Italic are iPad only.
^ are retina optimized for the iPad.
* are iPhone 5/5th gen iPod Touch optimized.
~ (symbol beside the "1" on standard US keyboards) are iPhone 6/6+ optimized. Note that apps that are iPhone 6/6+ optimized are by default iPhone 5/5th gen iPod Touch optimized.
Some game developers/companies like to offer free versions which are usually demos of the full version and a great way to check out and determine if you will actually like a particular game without paying anything. These demos are noted as such. Some game developers/companies like Zynga, however, like to offer free, AD-Supported, versions of their games which means you get the full game, but it features ads and by buying the paid version you remove those ads. AD-Supported games are noted as such.

iMaschine is free right now (beat maker app), normally $5. You need to use the apple store app to get it. From the apple store app, click the stores tab at the bottom. From there scroll down and click the iMaschine logo. It'll send you to the App Store to redeem.

Just to point out, you must use the apple store app. Not the App Store or iTunes apps.

*iMaschine if anyone's confused on what it is

Ahh now I see, unavailable in the ipad version of the apple store app, damn.  Well if anyone can get a spare code Id appreciate it :)

Stupid. I went to look this up, too. Instabuy if it was an iOS port of the DS game. Without the minigames, it's just a book for a buck that I can pass on.
I bought it a while ago. It is soooo awkward because it's obviously a game with the game poorly ripped out. I gave up after a little bit, wanted to play before VLR.

Dragon Quest got released for $2.99 but I'm going to warn you guys it doesn't support cloud saves at the moment. Wish I had known before doing so much grinding on my phone....... wait that doesn't sound right.

If you have a family, would you wait for ios8 to come out before buying new content because of family share? Everything going forward on that date (or released?) has to include family sharing right?

What about version updates?

I think you misunderstand just how family share works. Let's say I am the dad in a typical family. I have a bunch of apps and games on my iPhone/iPad. My significant other has a bunch of apps and games on her iPhone/iPad. Then let's say we have two kids one has an iPhone and the other has an iPad. If once iOS 8 comes out we all join in in a family share setup then suddenly all the apps and games on my devices are available to the family to download and enjoy. The apps and games on the wife's devices are available to the family to download enjoy. The kids then have access to all the apps and games we've both gathered over the years.

I think what you are getting tripped up on is timing when really there is no timing. It doesn't matter if I got an app the day the first iPhone launched. It doesn't matter if I bought an app the day before, day of or the day after iOS 8 comes out. Any apps tied to my account will be available to everyone in a family share if and when I join/create such a family share.

The other key thing, if I understand this all correctly is that everyone in the family share will have access to the apps and games on your account but they won't need your credentials to get them rather they just have to be in the family share with you. However I think if someone in the family share downloads an app that's on YOUR account to THEIR device I believe this counts towards YOU and how many devices you can have YOUR account on.

That would make sense of course otherwise I could imagine there being quite the abuse of all of this. I mean you and a couple friends could go together on a new iTunes account. You add that account to everyone's family share then all you got to do is split the cost of apps and games and then suddenly everyone has them. Sort of like how group buys for the PS3 work or worked? (Not sure haven't followed that scene since the lowered the limits). Even with the limits there are I could still see people here on CAG trying to make something out of this.

CAG 3.0 has been breaking iTunes links since the beginning. Either drop it in a code box or use an Appshopper link.
Thanks for the info. Using a code box gives the same result, however. I'll use an AppShopper link, but the prices will not be reflected on there. I got the info on the price drop from AppZapp and TouchArcade.

Edit- September 19: AppShopper is finally showing the sale price, 2 days after everyone else. They are slipping.

Code box just for copy & paste purposes. I think it's CAG's referral system that borks the links for whatever reason.
Code:
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/fieldrunners-2/id527358348?mt=8
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/fieldrunners-2-hd/id556666026?mt=8

I don't think that's an error.  It even says it's free in the description and has an IAP for $9.99 to unlock all features.

Ah, they pulled the old F2P IAP switcharoo. Nevermind. No deal here, nothing to see.....
It was free a short while prior to the update. Turns out it was an AppStore error. Those who got iPassword for free before the update got the Pro upgrade for free after the update, as well. I was one of them. Thank you, TouchArcade.

Anyone playing Plunder Pirates?  It's free with IAPs and decent fun so far.  I can only assume it's some kind of Clash of Clans rip-off, but I've never played that.  If so, any interest in a CAG guild?

Do you guys know how to backup a save for an app (game) so that it can be deleted off your phone? For example, I just beat Hitman Go and want to delete it off my phone but I see that there are levels "coming soon". I don't want to play through the whole game again once the update gets released but I'd like to free up some memory in the meantime

I used to use i-FunBox. Haven't messed with it in quite a while, however.
