Apple Game Center

Apple Game Center allows you to keep a friends list, track your in game achievements, and compare with your friends. Many games support this.

General iOS FAQ

1. Make sure to check for periodic updates either in iTunes or on your iOS devices. For each release of new firmware, there's usually a bunch of games updated right afterward.

2. Some applications also go on sale by their authors when they reach 1 million download and similar milestones.

3. Apps often have specials the day before, during, and after holidays, regardless if said game/app is related to the holiday. Most notably is the fact that many developers discount their apps for Christmas and because Apple employees, in charge of App Store changes, take a break during the week of Christmas these discounts usually last until the new year.

4. Newly released apps will often have a % or dollar amount off for a limited period of time to gain a large following quicker. While browsing the app store you can go to a particular type or genre and order according to release date. This can make finding new app discounts faster.

5. Apps can be re-downloaded from your iOS device. To do this open the App Store and look for a tab called "Purchased". From here you can re-download any previously purchased apps.

6. I strongly advise not to buy iTunes Gift Cards by 3rd parties unless you know they can be trusted. Retail stores and receiving cards as gifts are the best ways. There are many credit card scams, stolen cards, hacked cards going around, especially on Ebay.

7. If you are the victim of a iTunes Card scam or get your account locked due to one not all hope is lost. Apple has been fairly lenient on these issues. Call Apple directly at 1-800-MY-APPLE or check the iTunes Store support page. Also going to your local Apple Store to discuss it can help. The account locking is an automated process and can be reversed. This can take time so be cautious if you use gift cards from 3rd party sources.

8. If you somehow break your iOS device, you have some options. If you bought the Applecare warranty it should be covered for most items. If your Applecare ran out or you don't have one, try using one of the repair guides on iFixit to repair it yourself. Apple Stores have been known to give discounts if you bring in a iOS device that they will not fix since it's not in warranty. This discount however is very small.

9. Using a screen protector can extend the life of your device. Most stores carry these, but they can be hard to install. The best I have personally used are made by a company called Power Support. They have both clear and anti-glare protectors. They are easier to install because the protector is a firm yet thin piece of plastic. Griffin Technologies and Zagg are also very good.

10. Universal Apps have a small plus sign in the upper left corner next to their price. They can be played natively on both the iPad and iPod/iPhone. iPhone games that are not universal can still be played on the iPad with a lower resolution. Non universal iPad games cannot be played on the iPhone.

Games by Genre as Recommended by Fellow CAGs

Feel free to add games, genres or move titles as needed. This list is to give CAGs a chance to catch up on high-quality games they may have missed and to get new users started on "can't miss" titles to download for their new iDevice.

Green titles are universal (ipad and iphone/ipod touch).
Italic are iPad only.
^ are retina optimized for the iPad.
* are iPhone 5/5th gen iPod Touch optimized.
~ (symbol beside the "1" on standard US keyboards) are iPhone 6/6+ optimized. Note that apps that are iPhone 6/6+ optimized are by default iPhone 5/5th gen iPod Touch optimized.
Some game developers/companies like to offer free versions which are usually demos of the full version and a great way to check out and determine if you will actually like a particular game without paying anything. These demos are noted as such. Some game developers/companies like Zynga, however, like to offer free, AD-Supported, versions of their games which means you get the full game, but it features ads and by buying the paid version you remove those ads. AD-Supported games are noted as such.

Given that the original game was super boring, repetitive, and tedious, I'm out.

Yes, I'm serious. Yes, I expect to be flamed.

Cmon you cheapasses. Sacrifice yourselves for the betterment of the community, buy this and tell us if it is worth that hefty $15 price point.

I almost bought it because I have poor impulse control. I haven't jailbroken my iPad yet and don't have an MFI controller or else I would have. Otherwise, I'm now fully committed to never using touch controls in FPS iOS games because playing them in such fashion reminds me what poor hand/eye coordination I have.

Dragon Quest 8 is on sale for $15 right now and after I found that I saw the groupon deal mentioned above...use that code for the Dragon Quest 8 and i'm basically getting it for $10 which is doable.

Now I just need to clean out some apps so I can fit it on my phone, should just give up on even having music on my phone, need the space for games.

Not almost. Last weekend during the 2K sale, the Bioshock pack (with all 3 games) was $10.19.
And all of those games have been on Steam for quite some time. This is the first time Bioshock has been released on this platform and also the first time it has released on a portable platform. It can be questioned, fairly, if it is enjoyable in such a format, but there is no need for them to port this over to iOS and immediately set it's pricing structure around Steam's.

groupon has a $15 itunes for $10 going on, limit one it seems. Might help with the price for bioshock or some of these other games like DQ VIII
Thanks for sharing. I've never used Groupon, but I couldn't pass up this deal. Seems like a legit site.

Those rMinis are back on sale. I am selling my 4th gen here in a few and should be a ~$15 upgrade with my coupons. Can't wait, I love the form factor on the mini.

So, I'm kind of reluctant to throw this out there, for reasons I'll get to in a moment, but here 'tis. Not an app, but Retro Gamer magazine is having a 72 hour flash sale half off a year subscription on your iDevice. Here's the link:

Retro Gamer: The Classic Videogames Magazine

It's $22.99 for a year, IAP. (Yes, that's half off, believe it or not.)

Now, here's my caveats:

1. Generally excellent magazine, but be aware, it is British. As such, you're going to read a lot about computers no one in the US ever saw or cared about and they seem to be obsessed with a game called "Chuckie Egg." I swear that game appears in every issue somehow.

2. This deal seems to apply only if you don't have a current subscription. Not real happy about that, but if someone can figure out a way around it, please let me know.

3. The app for this magazine is one of the most unpleasant I've ever had the misfortune to use. Furthermore, their support is shit. I've been a subscriber for about as long as RG has been an app. However, most of my back issues have been in limbo since about this time last year because of an update that seemed to forget i'd bought anything more than the issues in my most recent subscription renewal period. Normally this wouldn't be a problem, except their updates have a history of erasing everything you've downloaded previously and forcing you to download them again, which is a very clunky and time consuming process. And seeing as how the app doesn't think I've bough a majority of the issues I have, I've been shit outta luck for nearly a year. Of the multiple times I've emailed support, I've only gotten a response once and it was a canned "update is on the way, just be patient" variety. Allegedly that update is the most current one, but if anyone can figure out how to get my back issues back, I'll be super impressed.

4. $22.99 is stil kinda expensive.

I noticed that price for Retro Gamer as well when I was checking my expiration date, assumed it was a mistake.  No idea how to lock it in now, so I guess I/we're outta luck.

The problem you've run into is the exact reason why I make a backup of every issue.

I'd sent in a email to ask that but as with 95% of my other emails! it went unanswered. Over now, so what does it matter anyway?

I did finally get their voucher for my missing back issues. Of course, I'll have to go through the download process again, but at least they show up finally.

By the way, I still have a bunch of OTTTG codes from last month's IGN game of the month.  If anyone is looking for one, PM me.  Not sure if they still work, but you can try one that I have not claimed.

Not that I've seen...yet. It wouldn't be the first time they were late with it. Their mobile division is really slow with updates and such, and they skip a lot of days, etc.

Well, is there a normal free app of the month this September?

has anyone tried the phoenix wright trilogy? I keep hearing mixed things about it
Its the best series in gaming, even though it has little gaming in it. You'll either love it or hate it, not much middle ground and it all comes down to whether or not you can appreciate the characters and story. Each episode builds on the next to push the story further. At first, events appear to be random, but everything is very carefully done to position further character development or advancement of the overall story arc.

Hitman GO! And Wayward Souls is increasing a dollar from 5.99 to 6.99 on Monday, as they promised with each update.

So dive in now while you can! Fun and highly rated rogue dungeon romp that might be as hard as Dark Souls apparently.

Almost bought it when it was $1.99 a couple of weeks ago. But figured my backlog was too large. It hasn't gotten any shorter since, and it's now one longer :\

Edit: ruh-roh:

Awesome, I've wanted to try Hitman Go but didn't think I'd play it enough to warrant a purchase. For free I'm all in, thanks for the heads up!
