are warranties necessary for internal hard drives?

Thinking about picking one up from square trade, $7 for 3-years isn't bad at all. I never upgraded my hard drive before. This would be used for the PS3 btw, a 640 samsung HDD!
 
For $7, it would be silly not to. If it fails one day and ends up being a big hassle, you'd say "man, all this for a lousy $7."
 
Usually with warranties it only covers the product and not the contents. So if something goes wrong with your hard drive and fails and you get it "fix" all you data may be gone. After that even though you may have a fixed hard drive or a new one, i'd be skeptical about using it on important stuff, thus defeating the purpose of having a warranty on it.
 
Most internal hard drives already have 3 or 5 year warranties as it is, so adding a $7 expense to a drive that already is 3 or 5 year warrantied makes no sense.

If you bought the drive retail, it'll have whatever factory warranty the drive will have from date of purchase, be it 3 years or 5 years. If you go to the manufacturer's product page for the drive you purchased, it'll tell you what the drive's warranty is from date of purchase.

Also, if you go to the manufacturer's support page, there will be an entry somewhere on the support pages to verify the warranty from the serial numer of the drive. That verification will most likely be from date of manufacture, so it may not be the full timeframe of (date of purchase + 3 / 5 years), though it'll show you what the warranty is on the drive regardless of the drive being purchased new or used. If your date of purchase + 3 / 5 years is more than what you'd see on the manufacturer's support page for the warranty verification, then your receipt would show you to have a longer warranty.

But buying one from the retailer adds the convenience of exchanging it there should it fail instead of paying to ship it to the manufacturer and having them stick you with a fee or jump through hoops. When my 360 RROD'd, Microsoft refused to fix it even though it was within warranty. That was an instant pain-in-the-ass hassle and a ton of lawns I could have avoided mowing to replace it had I elected to spend the extra few dollars to cover it at the store.

Of course, the flipside is why spend more than you have to when it's just as likely you'll end up not needing it at all.

Comparing a drive replacement in warranty to a Xbox 360 replacement in warranty isn't a valid comparison.

Drive vendors will go through some troubleshooting steps to determine if the drive is dead or not, and if dead, work through the RMA process. It's pretty straightforward and these days, little to no hassle.

I've only heard good things from square trade, but doesn't really matter if this is an internal hard drive or not I figured?

This is my first time putting in an internal hard drive so I wasn't sure how the warranty process worked

I owned 3 home PC's in the past for a good number of 5+ years and the HDD never went bad...

While I've heard Western Digital being the most recommended, but I figured Samsung, Seagate or Hitachi wouldn't be as bad as 2 of these are stored on retail PS3s
