Assassin's Creed Reviews Confusion!
This game isn't similar to Thief at all, is it?

Oh, and why did IGN say PS3 has worse fps than the 360, but GS says the PS3 version has better fps..
And then IGN retracted their PS3 framerate statement. I don't know. I think they're both full of shit.

That's what I was about to ask.

Interesting indeed. I can't honestly remember the last time GS gave a higher score than IGN.

Regardless, I'll be picking this up when I get to Canada. (Less than 3 weeks!)

GameTrailers video reviews show off the ridiculously bad AI. It's you and 2 enemies, you kill one with the "secret weapon", and then go into "blend with the crowd" mode, and the one remaining enemy, who was looking right at you during the kill, can't figure out who killed his buddy.

reviewers suck and their scores never accurately reflect the game. ive played games that got shit scores only to be wowed by the game and vice versa games with high scores that sucked. in the end with rentals being so cheap its easier to rent a game so you can get the best view on how good the game is to you. and if you buy it and hate it you can always trade or sell it here.
I don't know, I'm having trouble believing the 5min loading time complaint.

If Zewone see's this he can say if it's true or not since he has the game.
Not true, loading screens never took more than 30 seconds for me. Also, when the game's loading, you still get to control Altair. It never feels like you have to wait for the game to load.

so what the hell are they talking about?! i guess we'll see today if you get the game.
Hilary Goldstein is the weirdo praising Virtua Fighter 5 and calling it deep, yet refuses to divulge any information that would support it's depth.

I hate reviewers like that...
No offense, but a Tekken fan questioning the depth of Virtua Fighter is like an Outrun fan questioning the depth of Forza or Gran Turismo.

I'm guessing the sites got a review copy. They said, "there's some framerate issues, hey Ubi, baby, did you clean this up for the retail version?" and whatever Ubisoft told them, they misinterpreted and turned into a review. For instance: Odin Sphere reviews complained about 30 second load times between screens. Load times were actually 5 seconds. Explanation? Load times were 30 seconds in the review version. I think this is our explanation for "5 minute load times."

ah yea, finally read through the comments. i forgot to mention in my original post that what i meant by the contradictory statements include the framrates between the PS3 and 360 versions. i also forgot to include comments about the load times between reviews.

i don't buy a game soley based on a review either but since i own both systems, i'd expect their reviews to have some sort to consistency for the technical aspects of the game so they can help me on my purchasing decision. i'm not reading their reviews for just the subjective perspective alone. that's a given

I encourage everyone in this thread to buy this game, so it becomes a hit and then is eventually released as a greatest hit (or whatever they call them on 360) so i can get it for $30

With all the AAA titles out this year, i'll wait for a price drop

I tend to trust Gamespot more than IGN because usually they have stricter standards. So this is pretty weird to me...
Game needs a demo.
I agree, but I just watched the game trailers review, and it has some of the worst AI i have seen in a long time.

CVG has hammered the gavel on multi-platform Assassin's Creed (why don't we get a gavel?). So which version does CVG say we should pick up?
Under a microscope the PS3 version does look a bit sharper when the two versions are running side by side.
OK, so even though the two versions are close, that means graphics go to the PS3. Err...it's never that simple, is it?
The Xbox 360 version makes up for this with (arguably) better controls and we're also told it runs two or three frames faster than the PS3 cousin, though no-one's going to notice that.
So which version do we buy?? They both sound so...ultimately similar. How do we choose between two products that are so...equal? Ubisoft...did a good job. Flamewarthower...running out of fuel. Fanboys...becoming wildly apathetic. The world...running our of ellipsis...

Ohh who to trust...

But VF5 is super-hyber-OMFGBBQ deep.

It seems like Assassin's Creed is one of those games that suffers from a myraid of problems, but if you can overlook the problems you'll be in for a awesome experience. Basically, it's love or hate.

I was always going to rent AC, this doesn't change anything.

The reviews also mentioned how the game seems to just be setting itself up for a sequel which I'd believe. Given how much people have talked about this game I bet they decided on a sequel awhile ago, hence why it's getting mixed reviews now. Instead of going balls to the wall to make a good game they prolly figured, eh we can wait and add more to the sequel. Pure speculation of course, but I bet it's not that far from the truth.

As for buying the game, the main reason IGN or any other source even cut it down was because you do the same crap over and over again until you kill everyone. I can be pretty brain dead at times but I dunno if I'd wanna do the same crap for 20 hours or however long this game is.

But if you were really excited about it, the worst review has been a 7/10 and majority have been higher so buy it. If you don't care, the 360 has plenty others to choose from.

Man, this was my most anticipated game of the year until E3 and since then it's been all downhill.

I'll wait on a demo or a huge sale. With Mass Effect coming next week, I can afford to be picky.

+1. Tekken is for jerks

It's pretty kickass. A demo would not do it justice though because the controls take a while to get used to. Like at least 2-3 hours before you finally get the hang of it.
Got it, not very far into it, but I'm really liking it.
Are there really 5 min load times?
Are there really 5 min load times?
Not even close. Longest time I waited was when I assume it was installing to the HDD when I put the game in.

I have the PS3 version BTW.

You gotta be kidding me. I may have an ulterior motive since I have a journalism degree (most of us are tools, yes) and review games for a newspaper, but this is a ridiculous statement, as are most blanket statements.
"Regular people with journalism degrees" are presumably trained in not only effective, concise writing, but in ethics, balance and style. They are the difference between purposeful communication and the sort of impromtu, off-the-cuff, bias-filled BS that Internet communication is mostly built around.
I'm not saying all reviewers are infallible, or that they are never biased toward a certain system or company.
But if someone is writing for Gamespot or IGN, they've paid their dues and at least taken the sort of training that most people have not.
What I try to do is find a certain reviewer or site that I like and stick to it. Usually, they are dead on. The only review I've ever read that I didn't pretty much agree with was on Godhand for PS2. That game was slandered by the press for no real reason. It was a gem and one of the best of last-gen games.
That said, this whole thread was started because of discrepancies in several reviews, which means that there usually isn't much disagreement.
That means most reviewers, and the public that reads them, share opinions the majority of the time.
I think gamers know (and these reviewers are gamers by definition) what's good and what isn't. Not all games are everyone's cup of tea, but we know what's decent. The reviewers loved God of War - so did we. The reviewers loved Halo 3 - so did most people. I mean, come on. These guys are giving you their opinions for free on a $50-60 purchase in a way that benefits you. Read it or not, but no need to smear them.
Oh, and Assassins Creed is pretty sweet. There's an in-depth review.
Wait, you mean to say that reviews are just regular people with journalism degrees who have their own individual opinions which carry no tangible weight or worth whatsoever other than that bestowed upon them by each individual reading them?

NO fuckING WAY.

Reviewers are worthless. Except for the guy who does the voice-overs in the Gametrailers.com video reviews. That guy's cool.

Truth. I hate how storage capacity alone is being used to try and support claims of graphical superiority, when it is completely secondary to the importance of how much of the graphical assets can be stored in RAM at a given instant.
I don't think this has been posted yet, but the AC reviewer wrote about the controversy in his blog wednesday:

1) The Assassin's Creed framerate. Apparently, other publications have reported that the PS3 version has a slower framerate than the 360 version. I respect that. When we write a review, we can only base it on our experience with the game. We don't have any kind of fancy machine to measure console framerates--I have to base such a statement on my own experience. If other publications say the 360 version ran betterfor them, I believe them--but I also believe myself when I say the PS3 version ran better for me. Actually, both versions have occasional dips in framerate, though in my opinion, they are hardly game-killing, by any stretch.

But I am not going to have some kind of standoff with another publication--there's no reason to. I stand by the statement, because I was there!

However, I have no doubt that other publications are reporting their experiences as well. I can't say whether it's based on hardware or software differences, disc differences, or other factors. But on the machines I used, with the discs I used, it was what it was. If you are worried about the framerates, you should definitely research the issue. I never thought of taking video of the same sections on each platform for a comparison (frankly, I think this is a non issue), but if I have time, I may do that. Remember: Experiences vary. I can only honestly report my own, and all of us on staff takes what we report seriously. I plan on playing a lot more Assassin's Creed on my own 360 and PS3, so I will check into any potential differences I have on the different machines, and with my own copies of the game.

Remember, too, that as far as real professionals are concerned anyway, reviews aren't a pissing contest. What we write is done blindly, without ever seeing a word of anyone else's review. We're not in it to contradict others, only to report our experience, in the hope that that experience will help you decide whether this is a game for you. The three of us on staff who played Assassin's Creed loved it, and I sincerely believe it is a game everyone should play, and most will love.

yea Frisky, i read that when he posted it. Kevin-V explained it pretty well. it seems they had a different experience with the hardware and that can't be easily explained in a review. i've experienced slowdown in some games when reviewers say they didn't experience them.

Yeah, it seems like the slowdown's being overblown a bit and that neither version's going to be perfect. Wouldn't surprise me if that's the case when I get the PS3 version from GameFly.

Yeah, I started it and noticed nowhere near "five minute" load times. The longest load I experienced was at the beginning, and it was 45 seconds to a minute. Nothing worth writing about. Every other loading thing has been 15 seconds or less. Fun game.
They both look pretty good to me, although the horse is clearly faster in the 360 version.
only because whoever was playing the 360 version was making the horse gallop or run faster, on the PS3 version they were just running w/ R1 alone. You can see the gallop button flashing on the 360 version, but not on the PS3 version. No big deal..

anyway side by side it would seem that the PS3 colors look faded, but actually playing it, the colors are fine, very nice. I don't see where one looks better than the other.

Or just wait till CC are giving it away free in a Sunday ad next year with, oh I don't know, big title for next year, errrrr the next Splinter Cell or something.

Put this to the top of my gamefly. Hopefully have it next week. I figure it'll be a good rental play through.
