You gotta be kidding me. I may have an ulterior motive since I have a journalism degree (most of us are tools, yes) and review games for a newspaper, but this is a ridiculous statement, as are most blanket statements.
"Regular people with journalism degrees" are presumably trained in not only effective, concise writing, but in ethics, balance and style. They are the difference between purposeful communication and the sort of impromtu, off-the-cuff, bias-filled BS that Internet communication is mostly built around.
I'm not saying all reviewers are infallible, or that they are never biased toward a certain system or company.
But if someone is writing for Gamespot or IGN, they've paid their dues and at least taken the sort of training that most people have not.
What I try to do is find a certain reviewer or site that I like and stick to it. Usually, they are dead on. The only review I've ever read that I didn't pretty much agree with was on Godhand for PS2. That game was slandered by the press for no real reason. It was a gem and one of the best of last-gen games.
That said, this whole thread was started because of discrepancies in several reviews, which means that there usually isn't much disagreement.
That means most reviewers, and the public that reads them, share opinions the majority of the time.
I think gamers know (and these reviewers are gamers by definition) what's good and what isn't. Not all games are everyone's cup of tea, but we know what's decent. The reviewers loved God of War - so did we. The reviewers loved Halo 3 - so did most people. I mean, come on. These guys are giving you their opinions for free on a $50-60 purchase in a way that benefits you. Read it or not, but no need to smear them.
Oh, and Assassins Creed is pretty sweet. There's an in-depth review.
Wait, you mean to say that reviews are just regular people with journalism degrees who have their own individual opinions which carry no tangible weight or worth whatsoever other than that bestowed upon them by each individual reading them?
NO

ING WAY.
Reviewers are worthless. Except for the guy who does the voice-overs in the Gametrailers.com video reviews. That guy's cool.
Truth. I hate how storage capacity alone is being used to try and support claims of graphical superiority, when it is completely secondary to the importance of how much of the graphical assets can be stored in RAM at a given instant.
